I lost weight on Tamoxifen, but it was tough. You need to be very determined. Strength training was the key for me.

Keep smiling!!

I am glad I am not the only one who put on weight and feels permanently tired with Tamoxifen....I hate the way I look and feel, and try to do something about it...I can't lose much weight and I have horrid patches on my legs from bad circulation...my Oncologist won't risk stopping the Tamoxifen as the cancer I had was extremely vrulent... I am just happy that I made it this far...
Hugs to you all, this is a good thread!

Good luck always,

I was so glad to see this post. I have been taking tamoxifen for 2 years, and have put on 20 pounds. My doctor yesterday told me I needed to get it under control, put didn't really have any ideas. I feel like I knew how to maintain weight before, but just seem to keep gaining.

I have had so many issues since I have been taking Tamoxifen.
Fatigue, depression, weight gain, and just recently I had to have a D&C due to bleeding in my uterus.
The most frustrating for me is the fatigue. I have to PUSH myself to do anything. I haven't been on the board in a few months, and I know this is where I can get my encouragement and motivation.

When a drug is taken to suppress estrogen in your body, the whole metabolic system changes - your body is functioning differently and for many women that includes weight gain. At the same time, after cancer treatment exercise levels often drop and that again contributes to weight gain. Add stress to the mix and no wonder you've had a 40 pound gain. Before my cancer diagnosis, I had lost 70 pounds with sparkpeople. In the next two years I regained 30 and these pounds are much harder to take off than they were before. I've gone down 15, but these last 15 are really stubborn and resistant to going anywhere but on my hips.I intend to keep plugging away until I'm satisfied with how I feel.

I asked my oncologist yesterday about tamoxifen and weight gain. He said there is no link, but that most women who go through breast cancer treatment gain weight and nobody really knows why (he suspects stress). I told him I had gained 40 pounds since I finished chemo and he said it wasn't unusual.

Tamoxifin and me just did not mix! I had to stop taking it; working with my oncologist and a nutritionist to stay cancer free. I feel healthier then I have in years.

Same for me. I was in menopause for 21 months, then had three of the worst periods of my life over five weeks, and now I'm back to being in some kind of menopause. I've gained 40 pounds since I finished chemo.

I gained 40 pounds after treatment and I'm on Tamoxifen. I started gaining weight at a startling rate right after I started taking it.

I was wondering the same thing. I have been on tamoxifen for 4 years not and I am losing weight but it is really slow. Wondering if this is the cause of it.

I gained 20 pounds during my last round of treatment. My oncologist said it's because of the lower levels of estrogen. I've been pushed into menopause. I am recovering from surgeries so it's been a challenge for me to exercise. I've been on Tamoxifen since October, but thankfully have not gained any more weight!

For what it's worth, I chose not to go on Tamoxifin, I felt it made little sense in my case, and I have not only put on almost 30 pounds since my treatment, fall of 2012, I really struggle to lose. I was 39 when I was diagnosed, and have since been pre/post/peri/post?/perimenopausal since. There are still days I feel like I'm not sure if I'm going through puberty or menopause. I can't help wondering if that isn't adding to the weight loss struggle.

I had wondered if the tamoxifen was causing my weight to not move too, but I went off of it for other reasons for awhile and found that it didn't matter. I've heard about different side affects while taking it turned out that none of my issues were from the drug.

I had a whole grab bag of side effects with Tamoxifin, including weight gain. I was then placed on aromatase inhibitors with basically the same results. I regained 25 pounds that I had previously lost and thus far have only managed to re-lose 10 of them.

I hit my goal weight in the middle of my chemo, so I didn't start Tamoxifen until later. I haven't had trouble maintaining.

I definitely struggled to lose weight while taking Tamoxifen, it was not easy. I had to be very diligent in both watching what I ate and working out. I worked out in the AM and also joined a Totally Pink Exercise class in the evenings. As with all things in life with diligence it can be done!!!!!! Good luck~
