I used to turn to food for stress relief and also as a reward - getting away from both those and now approach food as nourishment. I've never been a journal-er, but do faithfully track all my food as well as exercise and try to stay on top of it that way.

I often used food for comfort before joining Spark about 8 years ago, but since then, I have learned to manage it in other ways. Keeping a hand written food journal really helps to keep me accountable, knowing I have to write down everything I eat really makes me stop and think about why I want to eat something.

I always make sure I carve out some "me time" every day. Usually that time is spent is reading. Unless I have somewhere I need to be in the morning, I use the half hour that I have to wait before eating after taking my thyroid and stomach meds to read before I start my day. If I can't read in the morning, I take the time to do it at night.

I also keep a hand written journal that I write in daily that is a great help in dealing with stress. I don't always write a lot in it, or things that would be interesting to other people, but by writing every day, it keeps me in the habit.

Living with cancer can be a huge source of stress, especially if it's not a curable kind. I know it sounds like a cliche, but I truly find it helps me by dealing with it by taking life one day at a time. I never know what tomorrow will bring, but I try to live in the moment, and even if every day is not good, find something good in each day.

How I deal with it depends on the day...and the stressor. emoticon

My favorite way is to give myself a tech-free day at home on the weekend. I use that time for meditation, deep breathing exercise (which I will do at a moment's notice when the stress is induced - like in the office), and crash with an NCIS marathon, movie, or good book.

Food used to be my go-to for comfort, and still is occasionally. Spark People has helped with articles on how to handle stress without going to food. Now I exercise, hop onto SP to interact with my teammates, or use any of their suggestions.

I used to use food for comfort, but now I exercise instead. Music therapy also works well for me. Since I love music, it can change my mood.

Keep smiling!!

One of the things that helps me a lot is to journal three pages daily in the morning.

How do you deal with stress in your life? Do you participate in anything that helps you slow down, yoga, meditation, other? Has food ever been a source of comfort, during those tough times? How do you avoid stress eating? How does Spark People help with such issues?
