I had been at the Twin Towers on Monday evening, then took the train home from NYC at 3 AM on Tuesday morning. I arrived home about 8:00 AM, took a quick shower, dressed and was walking into our office when a coworker called me to the conference room. They were watching the events on TV...that's how I found out about the attack. Watching in disbelief, that this building in which I had been less than 12 hours before was now gone.

As I stayed glued to coverage, I was so moved by hearing the Canadian government officials singing "God Bless America," and the British breaking out in that song. I felt that despite who had done this, we were not alone.

I was at work. My husband was in Florida for a TDY (temporary duty assignment). They locked down the base, all phone lines, no cellphone or anything for the first day. I couldn't reach him. That afternoon I had to stop at the store to get something, and my debit card was declined. I called the bank & they said our account was locked because my husband's card was reported stolen. I was in full panic mode. You have to understand, his job in the Air Force was Intelligence and one of his specialties was deception, another Operations Security . . . !! I was just sure that he had never actually gone to Florida, that he must be overseas somewhere & had been kidnapped! When we were finally able to contact each other, what relief I felt! Turns out he'd used his card at a gas station & it got stuck in the card reader somehow! Anyway, he really was in Florida.

I think for everyone in the United States, our fantasy of being "untouchable" was shattered that day. We had lived in a cocoon of percieved safety, and suddenly had to face that fact that we really aren't safe at all, and that a lot of things are completely out of our control. Personally, remembering the horrific events of that day keep me mindful of how fragile life is, and how quickly our world can be turned upside down.

I also remember the unity that existed for a few weeks after 9/11. Wasn't that wonderful? If only we could live that way all the time, not just when something disastrous like that happens. Our country would be stronger for it.

I had broken my foot two days before & was not getting arouns well. My DIL called & while I was on the phone I saw the 2nd plane hit. She thought it was a replay of the 1st one but I told her it was another one. She panicked because my son was working in the World Trade Bldg in Norfolk VA and we both thought planes would be on the way to take out the worlds largest Naval base.
I couldnt sit down even tho on crutches...just had to keep busy so I baked brownies. My sailor DH couldnt come home for two days due to high alerts.

I still cry every time I think of those firemen, kneeling for the priest to say the last prayer before going in. They KNEW they weren't coming out, but they went in anyway.

I was on my way to work. I thought the radio was playing a drama - in very poor taste. When I got to work, everyone was standing in the college lobby, watching the news on TV. No one could go to their classes - teachers or students,

I was at work and heard it on the radio. I called out to my cubemates, switched off the radio and turned on the TV in time to see the second plane hit.

We didn't get a lot of work done that day.

I was at home getting dressed when my grown son called to tell me to turn on the TV. I think it changed everyone's lives overnight in the USA. I know I felt depressed and in shock for several months afterwards.

Where were you when you heard about the tragic events of 9/11? What are your feelings on the situation, how has it affected how you view safety and homeland security? Take a moment to think of those who lost there lives.
