emoticon We have been composting for many years, use cloth bags for groceries, recycle every Saturday and I do not buy "new" clothing..........I have been a fervent consignment shop buyer and "donor" for most of my life. The only thing I do buy new of course is intimates and shoes and then wear them out! I like the idea of taking the newspapers to the shelter--will have to check that out (right now we are collecting newpaper stacks for a local independent film maker who is using them for set decoration-will suggest the shelter to him when they wrap this up!) Thanks for all the great ideas!

Like Caro, I usually have several bags in my car, but forget to take them in! I am getting better.... I recycle plastic bags by giving them to the local consignment and thrift stores. Newspapers and plastic soda bottles go to orphan angels, a home for homeless cats and kittens, and they use or recycle them. Clothing goes to the consignment store if it's still in like new condition, and to the thrift store if it's still good, but not new. I don't buy books except at the library book sale or yard sales, read them and donate them back to the library to sell again. We use a room heater to heat the room we are in the most, and that keeps the furnace from running very often. Laundry is done only in full loads, line dried if possible. Detergent bottles go to recycling. I get about 27 to 30 mpg with my vehicle, so it's not a big gas hog, and usually get more than that on the open road. I do try....

I keep bags in my purse and in my car - but frequently forget to take them into the store...

We recycle aluminum cans, plastic jugs, and newspapers - no place to recycle glass.

We reuse plastic bags for trash, recycle clothing and household items by donating to a ministry thrift store, send books to the library.

We separate our vegetable scraps and peels for compost in the garden. Because we live in the country, we can burn some of our trash. We also "recycle" dead trees in our fireplace. When we get an ice storm with no electricity for 10 days, we can cook our meals and heat our living room enough to survive.

I keep 4 cloth bags in my purse/tote to use when I shop. It's incredible how much they hold.
My husband and I recycle everything we can. Our town insists upon it anyway, so, we put out 2 sidewalk containers of bottles and cans and at least 2 paper bags worth of newspaper and other paper/cardboard. I like glass, so, I use a lot of glass containers for storage and give some to a friend that does crafts with them. Our old clothes go to a ministry for the homeless.
There is 1 turbine I see near the boarder of NH in Salisbury, MA.
We are in the process of replacing all our old drafty windows in the house one at a time; our oil bill has already been cut in half after my dad passed. He was elderly and needed to be warm. We have AC in the bedroom, only.
We own 1 car that's good on gas and I live close enouph to work that I can walk.
I own several refilable water containers and, again, we recycle everything so we do buy plastic bottles so I can carry them in my purse when I go for my workouts.

Do you carry your own bag to the grocery store? YES, I DO CARRY MY OWN BAGS AND GIVE THEM AS GIFTS, TOO, IF I FIND PRETTY ONES. I LOVE THE BAGS THAT HANNAFORD'S MARKET SELL.
Do you recycle, re-sell or donate items you no longer use? YES, I DO DONATE ITEMS OR RECYCLE IF THEY AREN'T USABLE.
Does your home have any special features such as solar panels, wind energy, other? NO. I RENT AN APARTMENT IN A HOME BUILT IN THE 1700s. I DO MY BEST TO INSULATE. HOME RULE IS I DO NOT USE HEAT BEFORE NOV. 1. IN SUMMER, THE A/C IS ON TO COOL AND THEN IT IS TURNED OFF FOR AWHILE, JUST NOT LONG ENOUGH FOR IT TO BE ON HIGH WHEN TURNED BACK ON.
Have you seen wind turbines in your state or in the car as you traveled through the country? YES. I AM SEEING MORE OF THEM IN RI AS I TRAVEL.
Is your car a hybrid type or gas efficient, even electric? NO. I WANTED TO BUY ONE BUT IT IS OUT OF MY PRICE RANGE.
Do you avoid plastic water bottles and use your own fillable one? I DO USE ONE AT HOME BUT WHEN WORKING ON THE HOPE BUS, WE DO NOT HAVE RUNNING WATER SO I DO USE BOTTLED WATER.
