I'm defiantly a nodder, sometimes a motivator in the morning, I like to say "good morning" but mostly nod because I usually have my ipod pretty loud and instead of saying "good morning" I am probably shouting it very loudly. lol
this was fun

I'm a waver. I usually don't have enough energy to say anything motivational to anyone! And I'm usually in my own world with my tunes.

your responses made me smile. I think a happy runner is a combo runner - you just do whatever moves you at the moment.
And as for the cat calls - if they are tactful it's flattering and you should be proud of yourself for looking good. You go girl!

enjoy your run!!

Hm...I think I'm an 8th type - the daydreamer. It's like 7 but not focused on the run and may be smiling at random thoughts or something on the mp3 player.

I only nod and smile at people if they meet my eyes, or if they do it first. Otherwise I'm happy to ignore them and keep on with my dreaming.

Ah, Yes, I remember when I USED to get cat calls....{{sigh}}

Wait, I got one last night!!!!!!!!! tee hee hee (I was leaving the rec center, & this guy was walking behind me about 20 feet or so--was NOT someone at the rec center, & he was all "DA**, LOOK at you with your FINE self!" & I was all "(thinking--I'm ignoring you)" But I guess it was a compliment!!!!)

This is great. For me, it depends on the mood and the vibe I'm getting from the other people on the trail. Usually I'm the Smiler, combined with a brief nod. However, I also tend to be the Zoner. (I'm especially the Zoner when cat-calling is involved. Ignoring is my secret weapon to unwanted attention.)

I think my favorite moment with a Motivator was when I ran past a woman who was jogging with her 3 dogs and she shouted to me, "It's easier with the Iditarod here!"

Hhahahhahahaha--I just wrote about this in a blog--that I've realized I'm in the club called "Look, There's A Fellow Runner, Wave To Them!"

I am just so delighted to be in this club, I am the smiler/waver, but also since I am gasping for air, I could not say anything! Ha!!!!

(I hope no one got mad at you about this post--it IS funny. People are SO FULL of themselves sometimes...GRRRR)

Peace--Anne

I love this!

Ok, I would be the motivator....combined with the smiler.

As far as how to handle the runner that is approaching because you can't read him/her...maybe you can act like the Zoner and if they smile, nod or say anything you can then do the same....

I am a waver - but usually I am waving at cars and neighbors - not other runners. Cute post!

I posted this with another team and got really great responses so I wanted to bring it to another team to share.

(this is just some light hearted banter on my part, I hope no one takes offense to it at all)

I've revamped my training program and plan on running 5 miles on Saturdays. This weekend was my second run outside and i've noticed that there is a runners etiqutte that i am just not in tune with yet.
I've noticed that there are 7 types of runners

1) The Nodder; as they jog by you they will give a slight nod of the head in greeting.

2) The smiler; usually the faster runners - just a quick smile is flashed.

3) The waver; Without breaking stride or changing the swing of their arms, they give a quick wave as they pass you buy. This runner can also be combined w/ the smiler.

4) The motivator; This runner will have a quick one liner - like we're almost there! Great job!

5) The happy runner: This runner, also combined with the smiler, will have a general comment - "beautiful day for a run, isnt it?"

6) The group runners: these runners are typically in their own world and are in a conversation with each other and sometimes dont even notice you.

7) The zone runner: This runner looks very serious, and sometimes mean. Sometimes they look straight ahead focusing on their goal. Sometimes they look at you expressionless and then look away resuming the focused look.

here's the problem i'm having - i pass by the nodder, the smiler and the waver and i get in the habit of greeting people with a smile or a wave. (I think i'm more of a waver though) and then i come across the zone runner and i wave and they ignore me and then i feel kind of weird like i've just stepped into their space. LOL how can i read a runner before they get to me? should i say hello to all and go with the flow for the ones that ignore me.

LOL what are the rules of the road? What type are you?

I am in control and I can succeed.
