I take a psyllium fiber twice a day which has helped tremendously with the fecal incontinence. I too had a fistulotomy which added to my lack of sphincter control and the fistulas came back worse than ever - no more surgical options.

When my docs thought I had IBS-D, and I was going to the bathroom all the time, they recommended citrucel too. Apparently it's different from a lot of the other ones like metamucil. It doesn't cause gas and it bulks up things. I didn't try it because my diagnosis changed right after that, but it might work!

As all the others say, it's a part of what we have, the gross questions come with it.

I told my doctor about this problem, and he told me to take a tablet of Cetrucel. I gave him a strange look and pointed out I try to avoid fiber. He said it worked for other patients and it didn't bother them. Funny enough right after that visit it stopped, so I never tried it. But if it comes back I will.

CAPTHAMMERFAN: I had a fistula the came from an abscess about 3 years ago, and I had a fistulotomy and it healed wonderfully, with no problems since. They can't do that with recto-vaginal? I was just wondering since I was recently diagnosed and don't have much information on these things yet.

TREESA57: have you tried pelvic floor physical therapy? I went to a center for incontinence because even though I wasn't incontinent, I had pelvic spasms and felt like I had to pee constantly. They used a combination of exercises and this kind of electric thing and within five sessions I had no spasms. It is supposed to work really well for incontinence as well, and the exercises strengthen your sphincter muscles, and my insurance covered it. You might check that out.

emoticon TOO MUCH INFORMATION ALERT emoticon
In addition to the incontinence of which you speak, I also have a "rectal-vaginal fistula" which means no amount of muscle control can stop the drainage. I use rolled up toilet paper to stop it as it seeps out and wear a pad constantly.

This is our life. We just adjust and live with what we've been dealt.
emoticon Gross as it is.

Good luck to you.

I try to sleep in diapers, but sometimes I get diaper rash from sweating. That's not very conducive to a social life, either! I keep one of those heavy pads on my bed. Do you take the Imodium tablets or liquid? My doctor tells me that the tabs are one of the best things available to control the incontinence. Don't worry about "gross" questions, we have a gross disease! I hope somebody has an answer for you. I was in remission for over a year and having a flare now, so it's back to the testing and inconvenience again, and my meds are being changed to the biologics. May God bless us all!

Gross question but I really need an answer. Does any one have any suggestions for the pesky problem of bowel leakage while sleeping? My body relaxes so much that I am to the point of making myself learn how to sleep sitting on the toilet. I have taken immodium until I want to puke and it doesnt help at all.I have switched my bigger meal to lunch time and a smaller meal at dinner which is helping some but I would like to have a social life so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
