I just joined SparkPeople and saw this discussion, I've had Crohn's for 27 years and just recently had to stop my Humira (I'm devastated!) The injections at home were so convenient and the relief I got was amazing, I highly recommend it for anyone dealing with the symptoms.

Sadly, I am always part of that tiny percent that has the symptoms listed on the label and had to stop because of Liver Toxicity! Has anyone had any experience with the next step after Humira? I'm tempted to re-challenge myself with it because I just can't believe such a great drug is no longer an option!

I was just diagnosed and am still on the initial prednisone steroids, and the weaning isn't going as well as my docs had hoped. They said that they were going to try weaning me off by smaller doses and they upped my Asacol (9 pills a day!) but said if the steroids didn't work they would have to put me on immunosuppressants. Is that Imuran?

I didn't have to ask. I'm 3 weeks into a flare that steroids isn't controlling, so my doctor wants to change me. I'm hoping for the humira. I'm allergic to so much, I'm afraid the mouse proteins in the remicade will get me! Do you stop your Immuran right away, or use it until the biologic kicks in? Guess that doesn't really matter since the Imuran isn't controlling me now anyway.

Thanks so much for the quick response. Yep, did the loading dose. Just took my second dose this past Thursday. I have started a food diary. ANYTHING to feel better. I have read so much about other's success with humira. Maybe that's why I feel a bit frustrated...I want that success!!! :) Thanks again! Hope you are feeling well!

Humira takes awhile to build up enough. Did you do the loading dose? Alot of people have success with the drug but you definitely need to give it time (a few months probably) since you have been hospitalized twice I am assuming you are quite inflamed. I would definitely start a food diary too. I am sorry you are struggling now! Feel free to friend me if you want to talk :)

Hi all,
I was diagnosed with crohns 12 years ago. I rarely had a flare-up in those 12 years. Now, my crohns has decided to make it's ugly head known in my (almost) everyday life. I was in the hospital twice in the last couple of months. Was feeling better the week & a half/two weeks before my first dose (4 injections) of humira. A week after my first dose my stomach began hurting...a lot! It has not stopped. Took my second dose 4 days ago. Still pain. Just wondering how long before the humira started working for you all. I guess I was sort of hoping for a miracle drug to take care of the inflammation. I've decided to keep a food diary to see if I can make any ties. With the exception of normal "crohns" foods not to eat, i.e., popcorn, lettuce, etc. I haven't really limited myself since the diagnosis so wonder if it would make a difference now.
Thanks for any insight you all might have.
Thanks so much!

I took Remicade for years and then started having reactions and they moved me to Humira. What a difference!!! I almost had to change back due to cost but it worked out thank God!! So glad you are having a good experience with it!

Humira has done wonders for my Crohn's symptoms. I am so glad I started using it.

Linda - I had a doctor who told me no as well. I have trouble swallowing pills and I wouldn't take them all the time. I switched doctors many times until I found one that actually listened to me (and no - I don't mean until I found a doctor who gave me what I wanted). A lot of doctors can't put themselves in your shoes. I explained to my now, wonderful doctor, that I have to live with this for the rest of my life and I want to do something that is EASY and effective FOR ME. I'm glad I pushed. Good luck!

I take Imuran, 3 tabs a day. I ask my doctor last year to change me to the Humira but he said as long as I'm doing okay, he's not going to change it. I still hope I can get him to. I take so many meds every day and I just don't want to take them! Thanks for the input, I'm for sure going to ask again!

tryed remicade and had a severe allergic reaction - so humira was my next option. I've been on it for about 2 months now and I'm feeling better than ever as far as the disease goes. I even took a huge risk and had some salad yesterday and it didn't bother me at all. Only downside - I'm pretty tired and I think it's the meds.

Anywat - just wanted to share my experience for those who may be thinking about going on it. Ask your doctor about it! I did - and it's a little 10 second shot every two weeks. Beats swallowing 6 pills 2x a day!
