Thanks Penny.

I am so glad I have passed through that nighttime in my life. It really helped to have SP and especially you here on this team. I would be so lost without you, my friends.

Today I found an article in Opra's newsletter about what "happy" people do different from other people. It is really interesting and just so easy (yeah, easier said than done).

Yesterday, I visited my friends at their remote farm and it took me back to the "hippy" era. They raise their own food and meats and have created a co-op to share the bounty of their farm and woods with others. He is a fisherman and forager as well as a farmer. As I sat there in the yard on mis-matched lawn chairs I looked down on the trout stream running through the back pasture and then straight up into the wooded rolling hills on either side of their farm.

The gentle wind blew away the cobwebs in my brain and the sun provided me with radiant life sustaining nutrients and energy. I felt re-charged and ready for my life back at home. "So why don't I do this more often?" I asked myself. As I have slowly come back out of my depression I get small doses of joy popping up during the day which appear to be accumulating more as each day passes. So, why don't I do more things that bring me joy in my life? I think the answer lies in the way I viewed my life. I was of the mindset that work was more important, there were too many chores to get done, and even maybe I will get to that tomorrow

Today is the day that I will choose to enjoy! So today I planted some seeds in the soil and in my heart and brain. I will nurture these seeds daily and then one day I will find I will not only have vegetables but joy and a rich life full of happiness.

Lately I have been going through sort of like a "dark night of the soul" episode. I am working through it and I have passed through most of the darkest part of this journey. At the deepest part of this journey I came across a book written by Viktor E. Frankl who was a prisoner in one the Nazi concentration camps. He was a psychiatrist in Vienna when he and his family were arrested and sent by trains to different camps. He remained a prisoner until the German strong hold began to crumble and his camp was liberated by the Red Cross.

Upon his release, Victor sat and wrote his book, "Man's Search For Meaning" in just nine days. In it he writes of his daily experiences and explains his philosophy of life and surviving the worst possible circumstances a person can endure. From his perspective, Life is a quest for meaning in a person's life. He believed and applied this in his practice (Logotherapy): "Forces beyond your control can take away everything you possess except one thing, your freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation. You cannot control what happens to you in life, but you can always control what you will feel and do about what happens to you."

Each of us are unique and each go through their own "dark nights of the soul" and this is not to be trivialized, according to Victor. But as I have been reading this book some of my "pains" and "pangs of discomfort" seem to really pale in comparison to what millions of people endured under the Nazi regime. It has become easier to put my perceived injustices into perspective. I am left searching for meaning in my life and how to rise above my daily life's inconveniences to live a life filled with hope and courage.

It is not light reading, but I would highly recommend it anyone.
His book "Man's Search For Meaning" has over 12 million copies in print worldwide.

I think you are right, Penny.

I have a new book that I use for my daily inspirational reading by Louise Hay and Cheryl Richardson entitled " You Can Create and Exceptional Life. On page #4 is my mantra for this month..."If you are willing to change your thinking, you can change your life." Thought that was fitting for our discussion.

That is really cool, Penny. So appropriate. It is such a simple concept but why does it seem so difficult at times.

I have figured out where my negative attitudes towards myself come from. That is a no-brainer, but it is so difficult to stop repeating the same messages myself.

I appreciate you bringing that up...I will make sure to include that concept in my self care. I love to use affirmations as mantras so guess I will make up a mantra for "loving my self."

Here's another excerpt from Beattie's "The Language of Letting Go" I thought was worth posting. It fits with the importance of self-care: "...when we actually manifest love for ourselves, we give our Higher Power, other people, and the Universe permission to send us the love we want and need."

I don't have the book yet, Penny, but I may have to get it.

I did get a book from Doreen Virtue called "Constant Craving." She used to work in the addictions field and states that our food cravings are messages to us from our emotions. She offers tools to understand what the cravings mean and how to deal with them. I just started it and it really is hitting home for me.

speaking of food...it is Thanksgiving day. Hope everyone has a great day of giving thanks and all the wonderful bounty that goes along with it.

I was searching for some motivation today and came across this ...

"Today, I will be open to the lessons of my present circumstances. I do not have to label, know or understand what I am learning; I will see clearly in time. For today, trust and gratitude are sufficient."

by Melody Beattie in "The Language of Letting Go"

Hope this can offer some inspiration for you as well.

Thanks for sharing the words of wisdom, Penny. I agree that the funk is necessary for me to pay attention to my life's lessons. I got laid off today from work. And I have been trying to stay positive about all of this stuff. As I write this I remember the strange dream I had the other night. It was so strange that when I awoke I wrote down what images I could remember...there were a lot of doors and window in this apartment. But there was also a huge hole in the floor that someone was trying to fill with doors. i remember waking up and thinking I am being told about doors being opened and windows of opportunity. NOw with being laid off I realize that maybe the dream with the doors & windows was a reminder that there are always doors ready for any of us to pass through. I guess with all of my doors and life right now, I am ready for the circus :) I don't think I will run off and join it however.

Yay, Julia! The funk is not fun, but I do believe it is a necessary part of the process. I am learning that the Universe supplies what we need (even if we don't appreciate it at the time) and brings people into our life to help us learn and grow.

Speaking of coaches, the principal at one of my assigned schools shared this quote with the faculty. “I believe God welcomes the circus into our lives to give us an opportunity to show that there’s another way to live and respond to things.” ~Tony Dungy, former coach of Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts

Very timely for me. Thank you Universe!

Thanks Leslie. I bought the book and am reading a little at a time.

I have been in such a funk lately and today I realized that it is old stuff boiling up from my past. My last child is getting married this Friday and it will be wonderful except his dad and his wife will be there. I have been so freaked out with not knowing why I have been down and feeling sick/out of sorts. Today it finally dawned on me. I am allowing my fear of this man control me and ruin my son's wedding for me.

My co-worker called me tonight and we talked...boy, I got the pep talk of my life. This woman missed her calling and needs to become a life coach. She is so cool. She told me everything I already knew, but with such conviction that I was ready to become my own best cheerleader.

I have come to far and have worked too hard to let this affect my whole life like it has this past week or so. I have been too down to even check in with the team. Sorry. But I am back and ready to re-claim my positive view on life.

So this next week I have taken it off and will hit the consignment stores for something stylish yet casual as it will be held at the Country Club and informal. Decided not to go with Stephanie Plum's, Lula style. I could pull it off but it would be very scary.

Well, got things in perspective again, got my humor back and got a whole week off.

Wish there was something to get over the end of autumn blues I am feeling. I can't afford to move south for the winter so any other suggestions from those up north? How do we stay out of a winter-time funk. Mine is hitting early this year.

I forgot this forum was here. Reminds how much I miss INNERBEWTY...hope she is doing okay.

You are so right Penny...how many times do we stay focused on our own "plan" and we miss the opportunities given to us by the Universe.

I copied and pasted your post, Leslie. Great message.

I found a quote just this morning from a fellow team member. I thought it would be appropriate to share here. It must have been a plan from the Universe, because I had missed this email the first time and am not just getting to my old emails. ...Anyway, I gave it the title BEcoming.

BE happy, be helpful, be humble.
BE calm, be creative, be courageous.
BE willing, be wise, be wonderful.
BE strong, independent and flexible.
BE appreciative, compassionate, and loving.
BE accepting, be forgiving, be kind.
BE awake, BE aware, BE ALIVE!...
BE who you are and celebrate others being who they are; and you will know freedom, and you will know peace, and you will BE the light of the world!

quote by Heather K. O'Hara

(Special thanks to DELGADITA69 for sharing this in her blog "Quote of the Day.")

Here is to our BECOMING the best we can possible BE!

10 Tips For Stepping Into Your Greatness

1. Nobody can dim your light but you.

2. Dialing it down doesn’t really make anyone else feel better. It just makes you feel worse.

3. Confidence and narcissism are not the same thing. Narcissists lack true confidence and overcompensate to make up for the lack.

4. When you step into your greatness, you attract more people than you repel.

5. The confident know they will always land butter side up. Those people take more risks, fall down more often, and wind up shining the brightest.

6. All you have to do is your best. Stepping into your greatness doesn’t mean achieving some unattainable benchmark. When you do your best, you let your light shine.

7. Being confident means managing your fear. When your fears out-power your confidence, you dim your light. Stepping into your greatness requires facing your fears head on and making the choice not to let them rule your decisions any longer.

8. Within your vulnerability lies your strength. Stepping into your greatness doesn’t mean tooting your own horn. Sometimes your greatest strength lies in your flaws, frailties, and foibles.

9. It’s okay to brag. Yes, your vulnerabilities can be your strengths, but it’s also okay to shout your triumphs from the rooftops. Imagine if we all gave ourselves permission to say “I rocked it today!” What if we started every conversation by asking “What’s awesome in your life?” Wouldn’t life be grand?

10. You can’t claim credit for your greatness. Within this wisdom lies your humility. We are all vessels for the Divine to shine through us when we get our egos out of the way. Why would you want to dim your light when it’s merely Divine light shining through you?

(from www.OwningPink.com, Dr. Lissa Rankin's blog entry, "How to Step into Your Greatness" dated October 6, 2011)

I love that! I get so caught up in my head trying to sort something emotional out into an intellectual form I can deal with that I can lose the lesson and lose the value of just Being. I need to focus on letting go of the need to understand and just appreciate Now!

This was in my inbox this morning when I checked email... It sort of affirmed, out of the blue, that I AM exhausted sometimes when I don't see reasons for it, and I think it is because I am working hard to learn more about myself and my motivations, and then there's that little grad school thing on top of that... I need to lighten up on myself and recognize the impact of all the brain activity! I tend to look at physical action as the only valid reason for exhaustion. Now I understand why I come home from a client's office so utterly wiped out!

Good points, you guys! Sometimes I feel like my journey has taken me far, far away from others, and even reading other Spark threads feels like a visit to remote and foreign lands... This team is definitely a safe and positive place to be! I know my food issues are not related to food and my weight cannot be fixed (??) with a diet. Strangely, that gives me hope and a strong feeling of acceptance that I've never had before!

Penny, I dealt with fear with a Honda Shadow (600)... Ended up admitting that while I'll keep the endorsement on my license until I die, I am also much happier mooching rides and being a passenger who is free to gawk! LOL

I just came across this quote that seems to fit somewhat with the conversation...

"Human beings, vegetables, or cosmic dust --we all dance to a mysterious tune, intoned in the distance by an invisible piper." Albert Einstein

This cosmic tune must just be heard in a unique form for each of us beings. So however we are hearing the tune or what it sounds like for each individual is not right or wrong, it just is. Maybe we need to learn to appreciate the different perceptions of this cosmic tune and be thankful we are not all alike.

Just a thought...

LUCYSUNFLOWER, I understand the pain. Being on SP for a few months now I realized that everyone is not always on the same page. Everyone has different insights. That's what makes this forum so cool. Everyone heals in their own time. That's how I look at it. But what a positive for you to be supportive. You are helping yourself by helping others.

I love that quote, Leslie. It sums up what I have been focusing on the past few years. (It also fits with the dilemma you posted on the other thread.) I have been learning to live my life unafraid. I used to be afraid of dying, now I am afraid of not living. Hence, the Harley. LOL.

"We choose how actively we take part in the cosmic dance of life. We can become wallflowers, mere spectators to life, if we get trapped in the patterns and habits of the past. Or we can choose to dance by being present and open to the energies, the opportunities and the guidance available to us each moment."

I love that one, INNERBEWTY. That sums up the reasons I flinch inside when I see someone post on Spark that they are using self-hatred to lose weight. That breaks my heart and seems like a failure waiting to happen.

From Geneen Roth's book "Appetites":

"No one else has what we lost because no one took what we lost to begin with."

I didn't get a happy, healthy childhood. There are passions I have deeply buried (for music) that I cannot really act on now because of my mother (long story). I really believe I have let go of the disappointment of not getting early childhood training in music, but I have still felt like it was stolen from me. I think part of this journey of mine is learning to be authentically me, whoever I am today, and completely release my history. My history got me here, and it is from here that I need to really let go and live.

Today's SP reflection:

[begin]
Taking two steps forward
Slow and steady has not always been an inspiring concept. It's not as sexy as speed and sharp turns of direction. But it may be just the thing to keep you from running out of gas, while still moving you forward. Abe is telling us that the most important thing is to keep walking forward, no matter how slowly. Sometimes slowness can be frustrating. You might become impatient; you might get discouraged with a setback. But a setback doesn't have to set you back. Simply using it as a learning opportunity can leapfrog you ahead again. From now on, try paying attention more to your direction and less to your speed. Be patient, focus on a little bit at a time, and soon enough, you'll be further than you ever thought. Besides, it's a good bet that by always looking forward, Abe rarely looked back in regret.
[end]

"I am a slow walker, but I never walk backwards."
- Abraham Lincoln, U.S. President

I love that quote, INNERBEWTY! I've signed up online for a free journal and am going to start using it regularly. So far, two posts done. I doubt if I'll ever look back and re-read what I've written on any given day, but the value for me will be in doing a data dump to get the noise out of my head!

Okay, I'm going to google online journals and start looking for a place to dump my thinking... besides here, I mean!

It's weird to have that situation with the knuckle-dragger of a manager behind me physically and to have actually done something effective about him, but in a way I think it left an empty place. I wasn't obsessing over what he did to me, but just mentally and emotionally working through it took up space. Now I've nuked him (which still makes me smile, I should add) and there's a hole. I know something will come along and fill it, but I guess I'd better be selective about what that is! LOL

And as a positive note, the pumpkin ice cream is gone and I am NOT buying more!!

No wonder I couldn't find that quote! LOL Thanks for including information from other books that I don't have... :)

Are online journals secure?? I am SO weird about recording all my thoughts in print - this posting is the most I've done, other than Spark blogs. I think writing things out is immensely helpful - but it always feels like a huge risk to me. Risk of what, you might ask? I dunno! I do not have a family in which it is remotely safe to share inner thoughts, so I've just kept them inside since birth! (I'm probably about to blow a gasket but can't tell...)

I have to apologize for the confusion. I'm referring to an older book Geneen wrote, "feeding the hungry heart"

It seems like You are off to a good start! sounds like you figured it out in your post. that is key! acknowledging it! it's going to take time, does not happen overnight. The cool thing is now you are being mindful.

You ever watch shows on tv, there is always a scene something goes bad to a character and the first thing they go for is a pint of ice cream. and sit in front of the tv to eat the whole thing. I think we all have this nonphysical hunger. some go for 1 pint of ice cream and others go for 3 servings of an entire meal (like myself).

It is difficult. when all isn't going to well, the first thing I want to do is overeat. I still do it today. If you have the cure, please let me know.

I do hope you survive this situation in your life right now. I can relate in many ways. I'm rooting for you and crossing my fingers.
emoticon

btw, my journals are all online, I type faster than I write.

INNERBEWTY, I really need to learn to differentiate between physical hunger and nonphysical hunger. I think after the Jerk got fired I had a huge runoff of emotions and thoughts that had nowhere to go. I write too slow to be good at journaling, but I have to blog on personal growth for one of my current classes. I sort of put some of the thought-overflow there, but the rest went into trying to satisfy nonphysical hunger... emoticon

It is interesting to me how different parts of the book catch our attention. The quote you posted was something I'd missed when I read it in the book! I'm glad you posted it.

"nonphysical hunger can take the form of a vague disturbance, [feeling that there has to be more to life... Lifting yourself up and continuing forward

Does it ever feel like trouble follows you around and won't cut you any slack? Sometimes it feels like you can't buy a break and everything you try just makes things worse. Who could blame you for feeling sorry for yourself or not forgive a little self-destructive behavior? Bad idea. The new, healthy way to spend down times is to lift yourself up and operate at a higher level. Remember that what happens to you is not who you are. It's history. It's past. Your true self takes that history and decides how to make the best possible future out of it. You have the power to keep your attitude and values from driving into the ditch along with the events in your life. From defeat, you can still emerge victorious.

"binges speak the voice of survival. They are protective mechanisms. -Feeding the Hungry Heart, Geneen Roth

I remember a time when all hell broke lose in my mind. I was angry, frustrated, felt hopeless, felt I was losing control, depressed... you name it. I called a local restaurant and ordered 5 items on their menu for them to deliver to my home. I went on an all out binge. I ate everything in front of me. This is also around the time I had my first panic attack ever.

"To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion, to be worthy, not respectable and wealthy, not rich; to listen to stars and birds, babes and sages with open heart; to study hard, to think quietly, act frankly, talk gently, await occasions, hurry never; in a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the common --this is my symphony.

"obsession is a way of organizing our lives so that we never have to deal with the hard part... we compulsive eaters wouldn't have an obsession with food if we believed life was tolerable without it."

Geneen Roth, Women Food and God, page 40

I remember a time when I was obsessed with food. Every thought was about eating, or a craving, or my next meal, or the fast food commercial on television. It was never thoughts about exercise, getting active, being healthy, etc.

Keep in mind that the scale measures everything, not just fat. Your real goal is to lose fat, so the scale isn't telling you everything you need to know. Your weight might be up due to water, but that doesn't mean your body isn't working to burn fat, it just takes longer to see that kind of progress reflected on the scale. As long as you're building your healthy habits, you're successful.

I wonder how long it takes fat cells to shrink.

I've been reading up what I can on fidgeting. Strange interest, I know. But I used to fidget all the time when I was a much skinnier, slimmer child. I guess the technical term for it nowadays is NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis):

I've been a little churned up inside over what I should do regarding the legal issues from my former place of employment and then I read this in my Notes from the Universe today:

"When in doubt, Leslie, give, let them have it, surrender, make peace.

When there's no doubt, Leslie, give, let them have it, surrender, make peace.

Did I make life too easy?

The Universe"

Because it is a public agency and the people on the water system are ultimately paying for the bad management, I think I need to speak up, but after reading this something inside let go and I do not think I need to speak up through my own attorney and in a way that creates more contention and negativity. Still working on it in my mind, but this clarified something! Just had to share it...

Found these words on SP, I'm a huge fan of finding more ways to become more active:

Even moderate activity, if done daily, can make a difference. Research shows cholesterol improvements are related to the amount of activity and not to the intensity of the exercise. Even if you lose little weight, exercise can help you improve your cholesterol levels. Heart-healthy changes can occur inside your body before any benefits are seen on the outside.

A 2005 study published in the British Journal of Nutrition showed that Brits burn more than 50,000 calories a year--nearly 15 pounds of fat--just by cleaning their homes.

Wow, I just got this from Cheryl Richardson's newsletter and had to share it! It was timely and I needed to hear it.

"Sweetheart,

Don't worry, you'll be okay
Slowing down is good
Wisdom simmers and steeps and grows with time
Stop pushing yourself

You are enough just as you are
There is no need to perform
Just relax
Let life unfold

You have what it takes to handle anything
Anything
Good things come from patience, not pushing
Let space and time reveal something miraculous

Trust life
Accept where you are
Right now
Stop the judgment and internal lectures

Just be here
Don't run or think or eat or scheme
Return to yourself in this moment
Where life is perfect and peaceful and safe

Love,
Cheryl"
(copied from Cheryl Richardson's Week 45 newsletter dated November 8, 2010)

I think I'm going to print that out and put it in several key places around the house!
