You should go to the health food store and pick up some adzuki beans. They are an overweight persons best friend. It draws water from the body and it is packed with protein. I would suggest you try Mung beans as well.

Oh by the way Miranna- I will never complain about not meeting my caloric intake again! I did great on meeting my protein requirements but I was kind of a piggy today! I was over by like 225 calories!!! I guess I was too relaxed from going to the spa! LOL

Thank you for the great advice Tomie and Kim!

I actually had a great day today! I won a $100 gift certificate to a day spa a few weeks ago and today I used it! I got a firm and tone body wrap, eye wax and a facial! I definitely recommend facials to anybody! Wow! What a fabulous experience. She also did an upper body massage! I fell asleep! She did the facial/massage for over an hour! What a dream come true! Well, my skin is alot better than what I thought it was going to be according to the professional! I feel so good! Wow! I especially feel good because it was all free for me! I have money leftover for another facial next month! My skin is so silky!

Anyway, I found this awesome recipe in the recipe section for oatmeal, raisin, peanut butter and brown sugar. It was very filling and rich! Oddly enough I think it will satisfy chocolate cravings as well and left me stuffed until I overdid it on the rice in my stir fry at lunch! LOL.

Kim-The secret to using tofu is you need to buy the extra firm kind. In organic cooking there is a fabulous- I guess you could describe it as a very healthy butter called Ghee. Basically you can take any kind of butter (not margarine) and you cook it and the fat will rise to the surface. You scrape the bad oils off the top and then put it in a crock to cool and it will harden-No refrigeration needed. You can use the ghee or olive oil and fry up the tofu! Delicious! You can then add the tofu to a stir fry. This reminds me- Last night I made oriental meatballs with veggie stir fry-The Smiths supermarket had a sale on coleslaw .79 cents a bag! So I bought a bunch because I can use that for my stir fries. When I cooked up the coleslaw it reminded me of Spring Roll filling so I am going to use ground turkey and the coleslaw mix to make Spring Rolls!

I never used to eat breakfast. I eat it everyday now. I had to work up to it slowly. If I don't eat within an hour of being up I fell shakey and sick. Once you have your body used to it this will be an easy goal. Just remind yourself that the food going in is going to start your metabolism for the day and it makes it easier to do. good luck and let us know if you need any help with anything else.

That is great that you got your cal and protien! WOO HOO! If you eat more Asian food, have you tried adding Tofu? I personally have not been able to master cooking with Tofu but I know some people that LOVE it. I'll see if I can wrestle up some recepies for ya! Also, great job eating a banana before workouts! I had a swimming boot-camp class at 530am so I would never eat breakfast because I had to leave my house at 5 but the instructor insisted I eat at least a banana before coming to class and it improved my workout a WHOLE lot. Bananas are great!!
Have another great day!

Thank you for the great advice Kim and Miranna!

I am always hungry after my workouts! When I wake up I just dont have an appetite for breakfast but I try to get a banana down. Today I did good on my calorie and protein intake - Partly because I am a stress eater and today was a high stress day for me! I love your idea about eating nuts and cottage cheese Kim! I think that I am going to go to my local health food shop and buy some organic raw almonds! Yum! I may also buy some pistacchios! My family tends to eat more vegetarian, Asian food -than anything else- so I will definitely have to look at some recipes. You know, I never understood when the experts talked about overweight people "starving" themselves. Well, I do now! I mean realistically a whopper has enough fat and calories by itself to last you for two days and it has horrible nutritional value! I see all the wonderful food that you can eat and I stand amazed that I have to struggle to get up to 1220 calories! I didn't have that problem today though!

Janel,

Great job in being aware of this and taking action. I struggle with protein also; I am such a carb girl. There is a few things that are not meat related that I use to push my protein up and I can say it has made a big difference.

Two of the best things I like is Kashi Instant Hot Vanilla cereal. It has 9 g of protein in it for breakfast, plus flax seed which has Omega 3.

The second thing I use is the Wal-mart brand of Slim fast shakes. I drink those after a hard workout and the sugar is not that bad and has 10-12 g of protein.

I also drink 1 c of 1% chocolate milk; it is high in protein and satisfies the chocolate craving. I eat nuts (like KimQ) suggested. I stick with almond or walnuts as they are the healthier choice than peanuts or cashews.

Yogurt is a great source of protein and I will have one or even two a day. I personally like Dannon Light & Fit. It is 60 calories, 4 to 7 grams of sugar and a great protein resource. Some of the other like yoplait can have up to 24 g of sugar.

As for getting your calories in, it is important to get a minimum of 1200 calories in a day. If you don't already, have 3 meals and 3 snacks a day.

Example:

Breakfast: Kashi or Oatmeal and a fruit or egg whites, fruit and a piece of whole wheat toast

Mid morning snack: Handful of almonds or walnuts

Lunch: Salad with Chicken or Fish, veggie and add in a yogurt

Mid Afternoon snack: Piece of fruit and 1 oz of cheese or slim-fast drink.

Dinner: A meat, vegetable x 2, rice or beans

After dinner snack: Yogurt or cottage cheese with pineapple, or peanut butter with apple.

It will feel like you are continually eating, and you really are, but it is healthy food instead of the burger and fries, shakes, chips and cookies.

I have learned it is a good idea to eat a carb & protein about 30 min before working out and also protein within 30 min after ending the workout. Our body needs fuel to burn the fat.

If you are hungry at the end of a work out, your body is signalling it needs more fuel. Some people think that the body will than feed off the fat, but in all reality it goes into a starvation mode till we feed it. (Came from the Medical Journal of Medicine)

On other thing, go into the spark recipes and go under vegetarian. There are a good deal of recipes that are high in protein.

Hope this helps and tell us how you change things up to help yourself. Good luck -

Janel -
I struggle with my protien level as well and I eat meat and chicken. I do drink myoplex light protien shakes in the morning - I use a 1/4 pack with a cup of skim milk. Also, what about trying nuts? They have TONS of protien...yes there is fat, but it is the 'good' fat. Do you like cottage cheese? One of the individual packs has 10g of protien in it....its trial and error to get the right combination of cal/fat/carb/protien but you'll get it!!

Hi Miranna, Kimmie and the rest of you gorgeous gals!

I want to thank you guys for suggesting that we really keep track of our food intake. Even though the tracker figured out about how many calories I should be eating daily to reach my weight loss goals I am having a couple of problems I notice;

1. I can't eat 1220 calories per day. I am worried because I dont want my body to go into starvation mode.

2. My protein level is horrible! I am not much of a meat eater. I am allergic to pork and I can't eat too much chicken because it makes me feel sick too. Do you know of any recipes or any yummy shakes that I can make to up my intake of protein? I lift weights two times per week but I am going to start weight lifting three times per week. I think that increasing my protein will be good for the muscle building. What do you think? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Janel
