So have been shopping for a bike for my son who is 6 feet and 23 years.
I bought a green Novara Corsa Hybrid at a yard sale today.
Anyone know anything to look for to tell me the year and value?
I think it's 2000
Grip shifters 18 speed traditional men's frame. I am guessing XL.
Pretty much like new.

Love Ride with GPS. I had each days route plotted out for our self-contained ride two weeks ago. When we got off course would just go to it and ask it where we were. One day a road was closed so just checked alternate routes. Great app if you're riding in unfamiliar area.

Wow sounds great.
Got in a slowish 10 miles today but I did it. Nice morning for riding.
No great and mighty wild life sightings today.
Was surprised riding in the Minneapolis suburbs to scare up a deer. Trust me I am sure I was more surprised than it was.

I also discovered the app I was looking for - Ride with GPS. I can plot my map out before the ride and then the app will give me voice commands for my next turn!! It worked perfectly. Someone on the ride told me that if I put the phone in airplane mode it will use up less batteries.

I enjoyed a great bike ride yesterday - Bike & Beer ride that took us from one craft brewery to another craft brewery and back. The first segment of the bike ride followed my bike commute trip to the train station!! It was a beautiful ride! Great people - lots of fun! Can't wait to get back out on my bike again!!

CarolBiker - thanks for the biking recommendations in Maryland. I am aware of both the North Central Trail and the Annapolis trail - I was hoping for some rides where I could just get on my bike and head out the door. I found some routes on Map My Ride and I am looking forward to giving them a try. This weekend I am riding the Bike & Brew wich is 15 miles. The ride starts at one craft brewery and rides to another craft brewery. I am going for the bike ride - not the beer :)

To times out for 7.5 miles today. I just couldn't get going this afternoon. I think a knotted muscle in my right quad. 2nd time out went much better, but still settled for shorter than average ride.
Trying to keep getting miles in.

Check out Map My Rides and put your location in. That will surely show some rides.

Near Baltimore a great railtrail starts near BWI and goes to Annapolis - I think it is actually 2 trails that combine together. Totally paved. Crosses several roads but it's a great trail. Last couple of miles are on the road down the hill to the bridge going into Annapolis. At end of trail go left and then immediate right. At end go right - wide shoulder (love Maryland). If you bring a license you can get into the Naval Academy - but can't take bike with you. We lock up outside the gate,

Another rail trail starts outside Baltimore (maybe half an hour north off of 83). Hunt Valley turn off. This is crushed stone.

http://www.dnr.state.md.us/greenways/ncr
t_trail.html

Trail extends 20 miles to PA/Maryland border than another 20 miles into PA. We live in PA so will often go down to the Mason Dixon line. Beautiful in Maryland but the 10 miles going into PA are a bit tiring - especially on hot days. 10 miles of 2-4% grade. Not that bad and the downhill is great :)

I am having a hard time getting started with my outdoor cycling this year. I am in a new place so I don't have my set routes yet (which causes a mental block for me). BUT.....tomorrow I will ride the 25 mile loop of the Tour Dem Parks which is a organized bike ride that will go through the Baltimore city parks. The 25 mile loop will go pretty much right past my house. I am looking forward to getting the miles in, getting excited about riding again, and perhaps finding some routes I can ride. Can't wait!!

North Dakota Ontario. Route is through the Turtle mountains. Not real excited about the roads it follows either. They are 2 lane roads and some have almost no shoulder. Not great when there is farm traffic and trucks around. I know there have been some traffic issues even with the candisc where people have sustained injuries being run off by traffic. Not my idea of the thing to do.

My regular route is a bit like yours, a run out, a bit of a loop at the far end, then a run back the same way.
But of course the downhills going are uphills back and vice versa. The wind blows from the opposite direction too.
So the return ride IS a lot different in fact.
It used to take me almost 1 hour. I have got it down to 40 mins now on a good day.
Keep at it - you know it makes sense!

Keep Smiling! It may never happen, and if it DID happen, what are the chances of it happening again??

There are pros and cons to out and back. You are commited to keep going when you get all the way out.
I checked out the route for bike the border today. Thinking it's too hilly for me. Have to find a new goal to work toward.

I haven't been back on the bike since the other day. It has been hot and the road now is all torn up. Tomorrow is open house. I might go afterwards for a ride. But I a. Not so motivated since I have no circle route to do. Go one direction - turn around and go back..not so encouraging

weighing how much riding I need to manage to be ready to do bike the border. Might be a pipe dream as the most I have managed this spring is 20 miles at a time. Cant quite figure on being ready by June 19th. We shall see.

So 7 miles this morning. Went out on a path where I hit more hills. Still kind of hating hills but I am doing better on them. Maybe if I keep at it I will actually get in shape.
Again lots of hares and one ornery small dog on a leash. Owner pulled him in on my run back but not on my way out. Dogs and bikes are not a great mix.

Saddle sore, but feeling engergzed. Putting on my cool looking mirror sunglasses I hop onto my bike saddle and head out the gate. Construction.. Half the road is missing and the other half is cracked and pot holed. But it is sunny, and I have supper all prepared (lasagna) so I have time to go for a long bike ride. We - my wife and I drive the four miles to the single lane bridge, ah we keep going to the four mile / eight mile viewing spot along the river bank. Do I stop? No even though this is the furthest we have ever gone on this road. We keep going and going to we reach some houses... We come to the house with the huge yellow smiley face hanging on a tree. This is where cell overage ends when leaving town towards the camp.
At this point we turn around. I am not sure what way the wind is blowing. I thought we were facing it but as we return back home it still feels like we are facing it, it is becoming more difficult to make those peddles go round and round.. Are we going up hill? It looks flat and when driving the car I never notice a difference in engine sounds.
I now and then look up to admire the mountain being swallowed by a cloud - just majestic.
I notice the wild roses in bloom as I coast on past splattering the brush along side the road with pink blossoms - not to mention the wild berries that are still in flowering mode.
We are well past the construction zone and I only hear the wind in my ears and the chirping of birds. I must make time to to do this again, but not today as I seem to have sat a little too much on that tiny little seat.

It's not a long weekend here so you must not be from the US.
I got out for about 10 minutes close to sunset.
It's been a way rainy day here.
Tomorrow is supposed to be more of the same.
I want to ride more and more right now.

Today if it is not raining the plan is to rest, do some cycling, keep an eye open for any bears wandering along the road and hopefully see some birds and get a picture of these. Most importantly not to be ran over by any crazy speeding intoxicated car drives.
Long weekend is here... Hurray.. Pay day was yesterday, I am off for three whole days. I usually fill theses days up with activities - but so far I have no plans other than the above mentioned

Falling is not on my list of preferred activities. I tried some mild hills tonight in my subdivision. That's kind of my plan for a few days anyway. Maybe soon I will get some pictures to post. The cock pheasants are pretty well cocky I guess these days.

Bought the new bike yesterday. Specialized light hybrid. Like it much. Rode tonight. Was feeling strong and capable. Tried a large steep hill. Missed the brake and hit the index shifter. Rolled down and crashed. Sick elbow. How every road rash and bruises are preferable to broken bones.
No camera today. Woof.

Oooh you saw some elegant ducks.
We have a dammed creek in our back yard.
On rare occasions you see wood ducks or mergansers.
My son called them elegant ducks when he was small.

And now we are two....

Yesterday I was off and it was sunny after having a week of rain and dark dreary days that reminded me of fall not spring.. Noni and I took a drive to Vancacover with our bikes attached to the bike rack so we could do some cycling around the Sewawall. I think a few other thousand people had the same idea. Yes it was a little crowded but there was lots of room to move about.

Seen some birds also

and some flowers

It was a good day.

Hmm, Looks like this is a one person forum an awful lot.
Great pictures. I should take some riding by the river and post this week. Things are starting to get pretty green and if I don't see anything else I can take pics of the geese and or pheasants. Sometimes I see other more interesting things like deer and cranes and other wading birds but geese, pheasants and cottontail bunnies are most common.
I am in the great state of North Dakota so have been around in Canada some.

Thank you..
Yesterday I walked Dalhouise in the morning around the pond for a hour.

Came home ate lunch and drove to Surrey/ Cloverdale area to bicycle 11 miles around the area waiting for our friends to get off work.

They invited us to join them for supper at the fish and chips restaurant. I thought the area was flat.. Boy I was wrong.. Up hill we peddled and down hill we flew over and over.

Luck was on our side... It didn't rain. We had slight winds and sunny conditions with overcast moments. We rode all around the place exploring dead end streets and nooks and crannies...
In the morning I loaded my GPS - I planned to geocache as we cycled. When I arrived and turned my device on - it did not. I changed the batteries - still nothing - it is dead. I have been having issues with it - having to keep hitting the reset button.. Now even that does not work.
So NO geocaching done today.. That almost changed my mood - but on top the hill looking over towards the route I was about to go I see a spot I exspect to see birds - I didn't see what I thought I would but I was hopeful and once I began riding that was enough happiness

Today I feel like I accomplished something .. Checking the bank account early I found to my delight that the income tax refund was in.. Hurray... So I was able to pay off the visa and put some money in our RRSP s for next year tax breaks and some into our savings... Then I went and did some banking for my mother at the bank and while I was there I put some money into one of my account to pay for my life insurance policy that is due in April. Next it was a stop at Service Canada to print out the application for my wife's permanent resident card that is due this year and then over to Walmart to get pictures for this application. Did a stop at the drug store to get a copy of Mom's prescriptions tax report receipt and then a drive to the accountants office so that Mom can get her taxes done. Earlier in the day I collectd all her receipts and papers. Now it is out of my hands - hers is more complicated than mine and so I did not want to make mistakes.
I walked Dalhouise to the post office where I mailed a couple of postcards and bought some stamps and postcards already stamped so that I can mail more. (Hint)

The rain has startd here.. It was nice while it lasted - sunny weather..
Last night out of character for Noni and I - we met with camp staff to eat out tougher. We met at an Indian restaurant. I have been wanting to check it out for a few years but Noni has always refused as she said she was not too fawn about this style of food.. Well finally we went. She ate her portions.. I ate my fill. I thonk I will take my mom here at some point in the not to far future. The price is average - it cost me fifty dollars for the two of us.. However I am not minding it so much as I did enjoy eating goat curry stew... Rice, Nana bread, lamb k bob, and chicken k bob, and noni had chicken curry. With that I washed it all down with chai tea made with milk.
Talking and listening to the camp younger staff... It was good .. I think we are going to start the year off on a good right foot.. We have a temporary new office girl too and hopefully this will help us start well together - as the office staff and I some times have these little major conflicts. It was a good time of fellowship - and I was able to make them laugh a coule of times by being just me.. I am a strange one at times - I am old enough to be their fathers.. Noni their mothers.

My body is still sore a day after the scrubbing of the kitchen. I cleaned everything including the ceilings, walls and all table surfaces and shelving.
The hardest part now is knowing I have to go back in and reclean it all before I actually start cooking and serving.
Dalhouise is away at the groomers.. I took him out for an early morning walk and then dropped him off. He was so sad and tried to dart out the door escaping from the hug of the groomer when I approached the door. Poor little guy.. He knows..
Now I am home and the house is so empty without him.. I miss him .. Crazy eh!

After dropping Dalhouse off I walked downtown Squamish to the secondhand flea market. I went in and asked if they had any postcards.. The man behind the counter said maybe and pulled out a bundle over four inches high. What I could see - the date of some postage stamps are 1926
I ask how much.. He was not sure.. We browsed through them and he said I could have them all for 25 dollars - I said I have a twenty .. He said OK and I walked out with a bundle of older postcards..
Not sure yet haven't done due dillgence ... But one quick view on Google is that one set is worth 15 dollars alone. And I have several.. So I may have lucked out big time... Regardless I am happy with my growing collection.

Going to work.. I havent said that in awhile. But tomorrow morning I must wake up and get ready to go to work. Over the winter the kitchen has grown a covering of mould to keep warm I guess. So before the fire inspector comes in, before the maintence man can come in and repair broken pipes, before the fridge maintence company comes in to do a cleaning -- I must come in and remove the mould..
Wonderful...
Today I went and bought a safety mask because I am going to wash the kitchen with bleach..
I have a solid day of scrubbing to do.. I am going to be so tired tomorrow night...

Made time ths day to take the car into the service center for its spring semi annual maintence and winter tires removal.. Shopping for the supplies to cook Mac and cheese for fifty people at church Sunday and to go for a two and half hour bike ride and a visit with Mom. I guess it was a successful day... I even BBQ supper for Noni and I. I did some birding while riding our bikes and came across this unknown duck.. It looks like a Mallard hybrid cross with either a Green wing Teal or Wigeon..

supper BBQ

almost got stopped

spring is here

must not forget winter

come on

Dalhouise next week goes to the groomers

So I bought the bike rack but so far it remains inside my car. But that is ok because I did go for a hour walk with the Dalhouise and then this afternoon went biking riding with my wife for two hours. Man there is a lot of up hills compared to the down hills.
In the sun it was very warm - but the shaded areas sure were cooler.. Should I wear my jacket or not... One moment I was too hot then I was chilled to the core. For awhile I took off my outer heavy jacket and tried to pedal to keep warm but that wind.
Oh that wind howled in my ears... Litteraly howling so loud .. and cold on my chest and stomach.. So back on went my jacket - and it felt so warm and cozy.

I was surprised when my wife got dressed and was ready to go walking with me this morning.
Normally I walk alone with Dalhouise around ten.
Well today the three of us went hiking together. Cool at first but soon we boh were unzipping as we warmed up walking in bright sunshine.

The scenery was pretty amazing.
Bird sightings were alittle scarce but still rewarding..

No snow here ....

Today the family - Noni and Dalhouise and I went shopping in Vancouver, eating at our now not favorite restaurant and then hiking with a mission to locate a geocache. Lighthouse Park - a beautiful place but our hearts were going thump thump, thump .. Up up up the trail went, then we took this other path that was not a main trail but the GPS said to go that way.. It was up and over bare rock where both Noni and Dalhouise slipped.. Then we had to go down this slippery steep path that almost didn't seem even like a trail.. Eventually we came upon a large trail .. We walked on giving up the idea of finding a cache as the distance now was indicating further away, and we were not going to turn back I that route we just came from. Just hiked on enjoying the sun and wilderness until we came to the shoreline of the coast.
I have been here before so I knew where we had to go to get back to the car ... Off we go.
Once we arrived at the paring lot I give Noni the keys and tell her to rest with Dalhouise as I wanted to go look for this cache one more time. I move at a fast pace back to the General location of cache where we had became disoriented ... I stop to catch my breath... And the GPS begins to settle down - I am about ten feet from it. I look high and low and zap there it is.

It was a good day

It's nice to have a job you truly enjoy and nice that you and your wife work well together. I used to work as a volunteer parent for an alternative school program. I loved how the kids would run up to we adults and without hesitation throw their arms around us in greeting.

I lived in NW Washington State during childhood. We visited Canada fairly often and had friends across the border. Mom and her friends sometimes shopped in Abbotsford. We lived about 10 miles south of the Sumas border crossing. A treat for us included the occasional visit to Stanley Park, the old PNE (esp the roller coaster when I was a teenager), and sometimes Chinatown for great food. I moved east of the mountains in the late 60's. It took years to adjust to the lack of green landscape and never have cared for the long winters, but I love pine forests now and don't miss the rain and bogs (or slugs!) anymore. My husband and I live near a lake in the Idaho mountains. With years of effort by local sportsman groups and Dept. of Fish & Wildlife, the Kokanee are back in our lake. With them the eagles are returning. Here's one I got a snapshot of from our house yesterday morning

Who am I? What do I do?

We work at a children's camp. Spring and fall we have school groups come to learn team work and bonding or year end field trip. Summer is straight fun summer camp activities. I am in charge of managing the kitchen the owner just wants to come and eat and pay the bills everything else is left to me. I plan the menu - order supplies - keep a record of stock - cook all soups, sauces, entrees and also prepare and cook all special need menu items such as vegitarian, gluten free, egg and dairy free special needs..
My wife does all the baking and prepares food for a 30 - 40 item salad bar every lunch. I also help her with prep for this too
We make 90% of all our food from scratch.
We have home made bread every day - home made soup every lunch.
Ths sounds like a lot? It is... But we do it for six months with a few days off here and there. I am good at multi taskng but I do become grumpy as I tire out. However it is very satisfing to me to see happy faces eat my food.
We cook roast beef, Turkey, chicken, ham dishes.. Tacos, Mac and cheese ( not Kraft dinner but the real thing) we have a BBQ meal, grilled cheese with tomato soup, chicken fingers ( processed) you get the idea.
I make soup from the stock of the beef or chicken turkey meals and gravy all fresh.
If you are serving beef gotta have some Yorkshire pudding.. Yes I do that too and this is for children ...
I love my job other wise I would not be doing it ... But I get so tired by the end of next fall.

So today is / was the first day of March.. It came in cold like 4 c and rose to 8 c and it was overcast. I will declare it coming in like a lion so it will end like a lamb...
Living where I do - on the west coast of main land BC this month will usher in Spring - we are always a month ahead of the eastern provinces.. I think...
Today after church and a short visit with Mom I came home and napped for two hours.. I must had been real tired.

While self-supported touring in Cape Cod I was introduced to the odd, new-to-me, seafaring bird, the cormorant and enjoyed watching them bobbing & swimming under the water for their dinner or drying out in the sunshine up on the lightposts.

My husband would have loved that day as well. We kid around and say one day when we retire I will ride my bike across the US - he will be the sag and stop at all the birding spots along the way!

Yesterday I finally went to the George Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Delta BC. It was a fabulous day birding. The drive getting to it was not the most pleasant but all was forgotten in the joy of seeing so many birds, including three lifers.
I went hoping to see the Sandhill Crane, ( I did) but I also saw the Great Horned Owl and the Black crowned Heron.. Just amazing. My listed bird seen for the day ---- Trumpter Swans, American Coots, American Widgeons, Northern Pintails, Rock Doves, Euraisan Doves, Robins, Starlings, Canada Geese, Mallard Ducks, Spotted Towhees, Song Sparrows, Fox Sparrows, Black capped Chickadees, Red wing Blackbirds, Great Blue Heron, Northern Shovelers, Wood Ducks, Hooded Mergansers , Common Mergansers, Buffleheads, Golden crown Kinglets, Anna Hummingbirds, Cooper Hawk, Bald Eagles, and Greater and Lesser Scaups.
I think that includes my list of the day - like I said it was a fabulous day.

I love watching big birds arcing through the sky. Not enough of a fan to know what type of bird they are though. I've heard from others that we have quite a few varieties around here including hawks, falcons & eagles.

Can you believe it ? I seen the Great Grey Owl.
I loss sleep over the anticipation of getting up early to go hiking to find this bird.
My friend finally responded to the FB message I left him earlier in the day.. He phoned me and gave clear concise directions of where people are seeing this Owl. Read my blog for more information on the situation...
I am so pleased this is two new life birds for me in two days.
Yesterday it was the Horned Grebe and now today the Great Gray Owl

What will be next.....

I have been enjoying the birds that come to my feeder faithfully every day. It would be nice to see more variety, but that is not probably going to happen. Thirty days give or take.. That is all that remains of my Condo living. April first we go on vacation to Mexico for a week. Then even a few days earlier than we first thought - we move to the summer cabin and begin working for the next six months.
Well at least this means I hope to get some riding in during my afternoon breaks
