hmmm, just that age-appropriate thing? I do think that Stacey London (What not to Wear) is right, women over 30 should not wear Daisy Dukes .. just isn't right ... lol

Okay, so I go to this Yacht Club last night and there's an 80's rocknRoll cover band playing and they have a following of a few GenXers (women). They looked pretty good as in they were in shape dressed nice and actually; HOTT looking. But one of the women who CLEARLY knows she's a size "2" and was wearing hot pink short shorts (as in I could see the bottom of her butt cheeks) and a halter top and yes, her girls were FREE RANGE (well, she looked like an "A" cup so not much hanging out) and though I applaud her for her "I don't a crap what anyone thinks" attitude about her get-up, I was TOTALLY embarrassed for her.

I'm somewhat of a shallow type person and am vain myself but this lady made me look CONSREVATIVE! Was she pretty? Yes. Was she bothering anyone or being obnoxious and/or annoying? No. Why did I care? I dunno, I was just shocked and that's not wasy to do to me.

If someone refers to High School as 'the good old days' then they sure are doing something wrong with their REAL life as an adult. I consider the world which I lived in at that time so small compared to my life now. To think that you peaked at that time in your life is a bit sad. There's so much more out there if you live and experience LIFE. emoticon

I went a club last night and I saw some beautiful men and women and they were definitely generation Xers or boomers.

I LOVE folks our age who look physically beautiful. They take care of themselves and the best part is is that $MONEY$ can't buy you that kind of health!

Gosh, I am "only" 47 but I feel younger now than I ever have in my life. After having started having children at 17 and always have to do the right thing and be responsible, I am just now starting to enjoy life.

Age IS a number, it's a number that some folks use as an anchor to tell what to do when it hits a certain combination.

A family member said that when she turns 25 she'll stop partying and get a real job and find someone to marry,.......and so she did. She also torted that at 30 it's time to have children and start to settle down,.....she did that, too. She's 32 and fortunately has retained her beautiful looks (classic tall blonde at 6' 3") but her persoanlity has been forcefully changed. It's just weird, to know that she made an effort to change when she reached a number rather than letting it happen naturally.

Love this topic! I'm 19 with 30 years experience! You do the math! That's what I tell people, oh, and it's true.

I don't dress really trendy, I never have. I go for comfort, but not frumpy. I wear clothes that fit, but I abhor elastic waist pants .. unless I'm sleeping in them! lol

I think age is a number the same way weight is a number on the scale .. I don't use it to define myself. Unfortunately my dh turned 50 2 years ago and decided he was old .. it's so frustrating!

"I'm okay with my number (48) but I am NOT ready to look like I'm heading to the retirement home for the old.
Are any of YOU ready to be old like that?"

I think that you can look good at any age, and a lot of what you're talking about (i.e. the sad, elastic waist pants woman) is really style. My mom has a 82 year old friend, who
exercises every day
maintains a healthy weight
stays involved and active
dresses stylishly
Although she would never be mistaken as "young", she always looks her best. I want to be like that when I grow up!

Having said all that, I used to be in the "fat club" too. Charter member. Now that I've lost weight, my skin is loose and no amount of exercise will "tone" it back up again. You cannot lose over 100 lbs when U R over 40, and have everything magically look tight! Overall, I still look better though, maybe even younger (from a distance, LOL). I never want to go back to the fat club again!

She just turned 40 and her life is over???? omygosh.. I would want to shake her too. Good for you Joe for restraining yourself somewhat My good old days didn't start until I hit 40. Little more pain in the workout room and the body is less forgiving but I'm getting over that.

I JUST met a woman the other day who was talking about her old high school days and mentioned that how those days were over and she's glad she's lived a good life,.........she graduated in 1988!!!!!!!

I just wanted to shake her until her elastic band pants and musty old doogy sweater would fall off and tell her to wake the "F" up!!!!
emoticon

When retorted that I was an '80 grad she got offended because she thought I was making fun of her and that I was younger than her. I had to whip my,..........driver's license and SHOW it to her!

Maybe it was the faded pink fleece elastic pants that sent me into a frenzy!

40 does not mean you have to look old. My high school students usually guess my age at around 30. I think you should do what makes you happy!

ohmygosh.. this topic hits so close to home. My husband and I were somewhat discussing it the other day.
First, people at work are telling me, you're over 40, you need to quit playing softball and volleyball. Excuse me, if I quit playing them, then I will ACT old like YOU... well you know it was going through my mind.

Anyway, we were in Cancun (oh it was horrible emoticon ) and discussing the fact that we have 20 something friends that we play volleyball with, who of course only associated with us in that regard, unless they want to plan an impromptu party at our house (wow, we seem to have the larger house), and then the friends our age... who don't do anything. They don't play sports, they don't workout.. we are in such a quandry with this. I am 47 years old and I will wear my hair long, dress from the junior section if I feel like it and dammit, if I want to play sports, I'll play sports.

Just because I'ver over 40 does not mean I have to act frumpy, dumpy and old and gain weight. NOT going to happen.

I love your topic. Actually some think I'm 29-31 lol. Lots of water, lots of rest and a bright smile and a positive outlook on life.

Now my fitness is an added plus.....

No we don't have to look old or act old.
I bowl I roller skate, I bike and ck this out
I sub teach sometimes and i beat 90 percent of the sixth grade class I taught in a sprint. I beat over 75 percent of the 12 graders I subbed for isn't that awesome. I'm not that great of a runner. The youth need to be prompted to do additional exercise outside of those few minutes of gym. If they are not playing varsity sports, they are more than likely out of shape.

And,

when they get our age they won't look as good as us.

I love your post. emoticon Let's graduate to better heath together have a great day!

Speaking of dressing/not dressing like a 20 yr old, I am a 'gamer'; not a video gamer (I get motion sickness rather easily playing those types of games) I play Dungeons & Dragons, Magic:The Gathering and lots of awesome German Board Games. So in the past when I'd walk into a game shop (2004) I'd be dressed like a 40 year-old Dad should be dressed ya know; ugly and practical clothing like stretchy pants and NewBalance black shoes EEE wides, shirt tucked in, pants hiked up, belly sticking out, male patterned baldness with longer hair on the sides and hardly any at the top, that "I'm old so get off my lawn you kids" kinda look.

I got no respect when I'd walk in to a gaming store. I couldn't find anyone to game with and so I'd go home after an hour or so and sulk....because people MY age shouldn't be PLAYING games anymore, we need be WATCHING football games and ESPN SportsCenter, NORMAL old man stuff!

These days, I wear size 32 jeans (not baggy though), VANS black suede sneakers, size "M" black t-shirt and they range from having the X-Men on them to scantily clad fantasy warrior women.....I get lots of compliments on those and I now wear a ball cap (even though I shave my head twice a week I still like my ball cap).

I am a GOOD gamer and now (as a result of blending into the environment) I get lots of props from my peers (the young dudes). My moustche and gote' are grey but that doesn't seem to be a factor and I don't get treated like a "Creeper". I was "Oh" such a creeper looking middle-aged man before (check out my creeper pics on my page).

48 years old!? You betcha! I say it loud and proud and I REALLY love to hear some of the guys say, "Dude, my Dad is like 41 and he's WAY older looking than you."

Oh, that N-E-V-E-R gets old to hear!

I think that the problem with your friends is less the age and more a question of lack of style.

While I do not dress like an old man, I have common sense enough to know that I am not 20 anymore. I think that this does the trick: Common-sense+ style.

BTW, I took a look on your pic. You were properly dressed. Not too young.

Do they really still sell those hair nets? Who knew! LOL

Absolutely not. I refuse to dress like a frumpy old woman. I won't cut my hair short. I don't dress like a teenager, but I do wear form fitting clothes and high heels. I am proud of the person I am today, and I want it to show on the outside. I want to show that I am successful and that I take care of myself. I am not going to just give up because I am getting older.

I'm actually at an age when I lie about my age I make it older tthan I am so people are like WOW she looks great for fifty when I'm actually 48...it really would have been a benefit to register in the triathalon as a 50 year old...I would have won my age group as it was I was second out of four in my 45-48 age group...that's me skating along at the fiftieth percentile! As long as I'm better than half! JK

I refuse to be defined by an age or number. I'm no longer ashamed of my age (yes, I used to lie about my age or just not tell people), but I will never act or dress the way people are "supposed to". By the same token, I wouldn't dress like I'm trying to look "young" that always comes off weird, I've seen women do that! But, I still shop in the Jr department, as much as the Women's(if not more) I will never cut my hair short, because women of a certain age shouldn't have long hair. When my legs get back into shape, you better believe I will be wearing my mini skirts again! I'm not tall & mini shirts & shorts look better on me. I believe Bette Davis was well into her 60's & wore a mini skirt!
I thought about letting my greys show thru & not color my hair, but the mousy blonde color bothered me more than the grey, if I could have colored around the grey, I would have, I just have a few streaks & think they look cool, after all, I'm a Rockies fan & have 2 grown boys, I've deserved those greys. But, no way am I going to allow wrinkles to take over my face!
As for health? I can't stand people who say "Oh, I'm getting old" or "I'm too old to do _____" Those words are forbidden from ever coming out of my mouth!

That's so funny Joe! I work in a school and I had someone make a remark to somone else identifying me as the woman who dresses too young for my age...She wears old lady clothes made of polyester and rayon. Given the choise with my ripe old age of 48 I'll stick with the Gap and Banana Republic and have people think I look young for my age! No way right on!

This past winter I had the occassion to be at an event where it was possible that I would run into old friends (old as in they had been friends of mine back in the 80's).

I was running an event and had my name announced on the speakers as being an event personal. I KNEW this draw some attention from people I hadn't seen in a while as in before I Lost weight (I was a life-time member of the Fat Boys Club until 2007).

Sure enough, not too long after my name was announced, I saw an older married couple that looked familiar to me. I'm 48 and the couple in question, if it were the folks I thought they were, are in their mid 40's or at least just a year younger than me.

Yup, it was them. My mouth dropped before they saw me (actually, they didn't see me). They were, in a word; OLD! He had a cane (okay, I'm NOT a doctor and anyone could have a cane at any age) but his plaid shirt and dark green chinos with VISIBLE white socks and black steel mill shoes and unkept old grey hair said very loudly to me "I'm OLD so leave me alone you young whipper-snappers!" and she had grey hair with a hairnet (I didn't think sold those anymore) and rolled up visible stockings like the Studda-bubbas use to wear in my old neighborhood (full of eastern european immigrants).

If you look at my pic with my suspenders and tie, that's what I was wearing when they I saw them.

I was stunned. They walked right by me and I couldn't say a word. I heard them ask another person working with me if they knew where I was but they were too distracted to be able to point me out so I heard her say, "He's here somewhere."

emoticon

Are we suppose to accept/embrace our advancing age? Like THIS!?!

No F'ing WAY! I can't. I WAS on that path, again, look at my phots for the old 'creeper' guy, that's me from 2006 and before.

I was totally ready to be old at 44, not now, my spark friends, NOT NOW!!!!

I'm okay with my number (48) but I am NOT ready to look like I'm heading to the retirement home for the old.

Are any of YOU ready to be old like that?
