Wow! I don't know what I'm doing right, but it's working. Made it to 147 (even) this morning and I'm overjoyed. This is the lowest weight I've been at for probably 6 or 7 years!

Hugs to all, Eve

Thanks, Eve, I am happy to have been able to find a happy medium between my caloric limits and the companionship and culinary efforts of my friends. I was absolutely over my limits, but kept the rich foods to a minimum. It helped that Bonnie served some vegetables, fruits and mashed potatoes that didn't have a lot of butter or cream added to them, people could put it on themselves, which satisfied everyone. By the way I just heard of a great "additive" to a baked potato - Salsa!! And I had a very light breakfast, and a small snack in the evening. And I had a great time! For me a small glass of wine is as much as I need, any more makes me sleepy, I'm not much of a drinker but I do enjoy a little on a special occasion.

Luigie, don't beat yourself up, think in terms of just one meal at a time and eat it slowly, getting your fruits and vegies, your grains and some protein and make sure you have all your water. Don't worry about the scale, enjoy your visit and keep the emphasis on friendships and activities. If you help out with the meals, make your addition a healthy salad or soup or a plate of fruit. Most important, enjoy your visit and relax!! That is what the Holidays are all about!

After a very long time, I thought I would check in and update my status, and say Hi to anyone still there who remember's me. I am doing well, have had some setbacks, but not in the weight loss department. My goal has always been my Sparkpeople name, Iwillbe145. I am able to see the goal line now, I weighed in this morning at 152. I still have nearly 10 lbs to go, and I can see by my belly that I will want to continue loosing until I have a waistline again, but I am so happy to have come so far.

Charlotte, I just now read your post (it's after 9 pm shere I live) and I was proud of how you handled yourself on Thanksgiving. Especially when you eat at a friend's house it is more of a temptation to eat because you aren't the one that had to cook it. What a great idea to grab the small plate (and it was probably a blessing to your host too, who wondered what she would do for another BIG plate)! Actually the white wine does not add as many calories as you would think -- you could have indulged with a normal sized glass. But didn't it make you feel soooooo good when you stepped on the scale and saw the 188 instead of 190 (or worse)! Whee! One of life's little triumphs!

Congratulations! And have a happy week-end to all!

Congratulations Charlotte,
Losing 2 pounds at this holiday is truly great.
I am still at my daughter's house in NY so don't know how I did. I have been stuck for a while and am trying to jump start loss, but this time of year I have a hard time.

I made it thru Thanksgiving, and weighed in this morning (Ok I usually weigh in on Mondays, but I just had to check) I am down two pounds!! I have bounced between 190 and 188 for a couple of weeks, I am back to 188, and now having survived Thanksgiving, I INTEND to continue loosing, not going back!

I had a great Thanksgiving, visiting the daughter of a good friend, and she had just enough plates set out for everyone, with two small ones for the youngest girls. One of them took a large plate and filled it up!! So I quickly grabbed the last small plate, and I was able to get a nice taste of everything on it without overfilling it, with more of the fruits and some turkey, less of the potatoes and gravy and marshmallows. I had a half glass of white wine, and when everyone else just HAD to go back again, I was happy and didn't need to go around again. I had a forkful of pie from my friend's plate, and black coffee, it was a lot of fun and I felt very much in control, and the payoff of course was finding out I was down two pounds this morning!! Hooray for me!

Hooray for Sparkpeople for helping me get so far and learn so much! Hooray for all the support and friends that have helped me along the way so far!

Do you have access to a swimming pool (probably heated)? You would be able to walk back and forth and it would not cause the stress on your body that it does when you walk on land.

Just a thought. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for that reminder.
I have been backsliding after getting a cold that has lasted over 2 weeks. At the same time I am having trouble with sciatica, so when I get up enough enthusiasm to try walking, I end up in pain and have to come home. I will remember though that to avoid gaining the weight I lost, I need to cut back on food until I can exercise more. I am thinking of joining a gym which I have not done in many years.

I hope everyone else is doing much better than this!

Well, team, we've only got three choices when it comes to a person's weight. #1 you can stay the same by maintaining your weight. #2 you can gain weight by eating more food than you use. or #3 you can actually lose weight by eating a little less food than your body can use, and perhaps exercising a bit to keep yourself firm.

And we've got two choices to make right now. You can decide to do something about it, or you can just slide along and let things take care of itself.

I bet I know what that little creature is - she's a FOOD HOG!!

I have seen that cartoon with the scales in the air. Until I discovered SP that was the ONLY way I was going to get to my goal weight!! That or only put one foot on the scale!! LOL!

I went in to see Rosemary, my hairdresser. I hadn't been in since May or June, but my hair had just kind of kept it's shape and I liked it a little longer. It is just kind of like a soft page boy, still doesn't even come down to my collar, but I liked having more hair. I think with the weight loss I can wear it a little longer now. Anyway Rosemary agreed and just evened it up a little around the back. I need to get a new picture of me pretty soon.

I stopped at the senior center afterward, they are having their holiday bazaar today, and I picked up two beautifully knitted caps and a pair of knitted slippers. I was just in time for their lunch, and I had a chicken salad sandwich and a delicious clam chowder soup. When I logged it in I was still within my boundaries, so it is a good day so far. I plan to get outside and work in the yard, hopefully finish up the things I've been putting off, this may be the last really nice weekend and I want to enjoy it!

You have a great weekend too!

Hi Charlotte -- I am not sure just what creature it is, I just have it labeled as "overweight" -- but he (or maybe she?) is cute I thought. I have another one that I like quite well and that of a woman with the scale upside down in the air -- my idea of losing weight. haha

I have kept my hair short/short since I turned about 55 or so I think. Just seems to suit older women better than long hair. And it suits my stature and overall personality, plus I have a small face and a small head. I do have the habit of hacking away at my hair in between haircuts though, like you do. I am sure the hair dresser does not appreciate it when I go, probably looks like I've been chopping away at it. Oh well. What can we do with our bad habits but tolerate them!

Have a great day! Eve

Good Morning, Eve,

Love your new graphic too! What is he, a groundhog or an overweight prairie dog or?? He (she?) sure is cute!

I used to live in Florida a lifetime ago, and the only bearable weather was after September. I guess that's why there are the lucky "snow-birds". I know several people who live here in the warm weather and go south to spend the winter in Arizona.

I'm off to get a haircut, I have put it off all summer and til now, I just whacked away at the bangs, but I like the longer look now and plan to just have her even it out but keep the length. New weight, new hairstyle, new attitude, NEW ME!!

Everybody have a great day no matter your weather!

Your note about the chocolate chips struck a note with me -- I'm a peanut butter fan and I have a container of peanut butter chips that I take a very "small" handful of now and then. It works!

It's funny how different parts of the country write about their weather. Phoenix is like an oven all summer, and now that October is here we are about to start our season of wonderful weather. Right now at 7:20 a.m. it is 60 degrees on my patio and finally nice enough to sit outside for my morning coffee. And I can just SEE my flowers responding to the cooler weather, they seem to shoot up overnight.

I wish the entire team a beautiful and peaceful week end and hope to hear from more of you!

Hi Margo -
Once again, love your graphics. Is that your partridge in a pear tree? He's cute.

I'm a chocoholic as well. I will see if I can get that brand. I keep a package of Nestles semi-sweet chocolate chips in the cupboard. I too get a craving late at night, but I can satisfy it with just a small handful of chips. I sometimes combine them with some walnuts. It helps with the craving, and I can eat one at a time and space them out.

Glad to hear your weather is so nice, we are getting cold nights but still have some lovely days. I think this weekend will be the last nice one before the rain sets in. My bulldogs hate the rain, will do anything not to go out, but they love being toweled off when they get back in.

Have a great weekend!

Oh, I eat the dark chocolate with 70% cocoa in it now, for health reasons :-) I like it maybe once or twice a week right before I go to bed; just let it dissolve on my tongue. I found a brand I like at my grocery store:

www.chocolove.com/strong_dark.htm

It has good fiber, protein, and iron as well as the stuff that's supposed to be good for your heart or whatever.

I probably have a BLT once a week, or now that I'm alone, at least every 10 days. I use the light mayo and it's really not that bad, and especially since I buy the Sara Lee bread that is only 45 calories per slice.

I'm with you though, there are a few things that I do not substitute on; butter is one of them. I try to monitor very closely how much of it I consume, but I'd rather cut down than use a substitute. And sometimes the same goes for ice cream. I rarely eat it, but sometimes would rather have the half cup than a whole cup of something else. I have found that the fat free/sugar-free jello is pretty good when your sweet tooth starts to act up. Luckily I am not a chocolate lover so I have no problems there.

Yes, I was thinking I hadn't had bacon for a long time too (it's one food I won't substitute, like butter) but then remembered when the fresh tomatoes come in each summer, time for the BLT's. That was the first time I'd had mayonnaise for a long time, LOL, with the BLT's. Only had 1 or 2 this summer though.

That's great you and your daughter have the same taste in decorating and it will be "fun" where moving rarely is. I loved when we moved here as we downsized and I didn't like the living room furniture so got rid of that and "started over". That was fun and helped make the move fun and easy.

Gee -- I haven't had "real" bacon for years, I console myself with the turkey bacon, and it tastes delicious to me now and I don't have to feel guilty about eating it.

Yes, I'm back home, all in well in my world. I heard from the doctor that he wanted to increase my thyroid medication slightly and I'm now on my new prescription. Also heard about my mammogram, which was a 6-month follow-up. They gave me a clean bill of health, so no worries there either. Thank God!

As the home my daughter was trying to buy fell out of escrow due to some glitch with the HOA, she has been living in an extended-stay hotel. Since then she has found another home and her offer has been accepted on it. Luckily she has sold nearly ALL of her furniture, so when escrow closes on this home there will be a flurry of buying and decorating. I know she will once again call upon "Mom" to see her through some of this. But that's OK as I absolutely LOVE to decorate! I'll be in my glory. And luckily my daughter and I have very similar taste.

So, you're home and back alive and well now, Eve? What did the doctor say, didn't you have an appointment or tests or something?

I went away with my husband last weekend to celebrate his 65th birthday. We had a great time and I let myself eat what I wanted and appear to have only gained a pound or so. I'm pretty much back to where I was and moving on. Friday night I had duck on apricot preserves and I'll not forget that very soon and the bacon at breakfast. . . I don't know why we can't make it that crispy and nice at home :-)

Today is the last day of "The Move" and so things are really looking up. I was going to stay until Tuesday morning, but I'm so tired and things are going so different than planned that I'm going to go home Sunday morning. I'm worn out.

I don't know how I've been doing on my weight, but hope it's not off by more than a pound one way or the other. With all the times that I've gone up and down the stairs it should be OK.

You won't hear from me on Sunday, but by the next day I'll be back home. Bet my dog will be happy to see me!!

Eve,
Glad to hear things have improved there.
I am still tired after my trip home and need to get out and walk. Of course most of my tiredness is probably due to staying up late to watch the Olympics. I can't turn it off!
After eating most dinners out for 2 weeks, I gained 2 lbs. so must get back on track. I did walk every day at the beach or it would have been worse! I just need to be able to wear my pants and skirts more comfortably or I am in trouble again!
Happy Weekend to everyone.

glad to have you join our group of posters, Summer! I am sorry that you didn't have something a little more cheerful to read about as you began to explore what was going on in our group.

Things have settled down a little around here, and are shaping up. My daughter has found temporary housing that she will stay in for about a month, and hopefully at the end of that time she will have found a place to move in to. And being that she now knows what she'll be doing she is in a better mood. And me -- my days are numbered here, so I'm getting into a better mood too! Nothing lasts forever!

Thanks Bonnie -- and all of you who have made comments on this. I really do appreciate all the support you've shown. When you're in another town and something bad like this happens, you feel all alone, then I come to the computer; and I have friends right here on my team! It means more than you can imagine.

If the granddaughter with an attitude isn't bad enough, now the deal fell through on the house my daughter was buying, and she has 2 or 3 days to try and find another place to move to. That is why I do not say too much to her, she has more than enough to think about right now besides a daughter and a Gram who don't get along.

Soon all this will be over and I'll be back in my own quiet, peaceful home. My little Scottie will be so happy to have "Mommy" home and life will be back to normal. At least on the surface.

May God take care of all of you,
Hugs, Eve

Greetings to everyone from North Carolina. I have been here two weeks visiting my family in the area where I grew up and a week at the shore. Eve, I think the heat has been a little like yours, and rain is desperately needed. At the same time it seems to have rained almost every day in New Haven, CT where I live. Wish it could be shared! I know it will all too soon be cold again and we will all wish we could be in Arizona for the winter.

Eve, I know how hard it is for you in your family situation right now, but we can hope the children change with time. I don't think we ever stop suffering with our children and grandchildren no matter how old we get. I understand now why my mom used to introduce me - at age 50- as her baby!
Hope you get to rest and relax very soon.

Unfortunately I doubt if Renee saw the problem with her daughter until it was too late. Her and my son-in-law got a divorce when the children were very young and I think my daughter did too much to try and compensate them for the loss. Then it was out of hand, one was on drugs, the other so spoiled rotten that who knows how she will turn out. It's very hard to change after-the-fact.

I've also never been one to do things according to my age -- like going to Disneyland and riding on all the fun rides! But, now -- at nearly 70 I realize that I'm getting a little old to help someone pack and move. Every bone in my body aches! But next week at this time I will already be home and my "recuperation" time will begin. Ah! Home Sweet Home! What sweet words.

We all enjoy some things in our lives more than others, and like all things you must learn to take the good with the bad. I'll live through it; but I do thank you for the kind words.

Hugs to you all, Eve

It's true we can only concentrate on one thing at a time and when others need us, hard to take much time for ourselves. I guess we have to practice carving a little time out, just like when we're young mothers?

Gee, Eve, sorry you get to be a "guest" in such an unpleasant atmosphere. Your daughter doesn't even go through the motions of correcting your granddaughter? We had that problem with my father-in-law and my stepson when he was a teen; he was physically rough housing too much for an 80 year old guy to take and my husband didn't get the clues because he was so use to his father being able to take care of himself! It was nice for my father-in-law that I was there as I was "outside" the family somewhat and yet influential so could tell DH to tell son, Dave, to behave.

Summer it is always more important to think of yourself before someone else. First of all, you know so much better how you are feeling. If you are hungry. If you are tired. If you need a drink. If you need to get away and take a walk by yourself. There is no one who can minister to you as well as you can. And yet we fail to listen to these distress calls from our own bodies, we fail to see the signs or heed the calls.

Better bring yourself up with a real sharp start, my friend! If you don't do it, who will? And who can do as good a job as you?

We're interested! We want you healthy, so slow down just a bit, OK?

Since last October I think I have lived in my vehicle. First it was Dad's illness and subsequent death...then a sister needing help, and then well, you get the picture.

I have always heard women do not tend to take care of themselves when taking care of others..well, I pfft this most of the time. But in the past month or so, I have realized it is so true of me. Seems, when the family members MS kicked in I made sure she got the help and the proper nutrition but I forgot my own. That is my current battle. I suppose I have done well to even know its a battle..LOL I do think belonging to the SP site is what has kept me from returning to all of my old habits. Still, I have to concentrate on me as much as I do someone else.... Darn it I put the blinders on. But, I continue to try.

Well, doggone, Margo, you're just moving right along, aren't you? I noticed you're having a ball changing out the pictures on your posts too! Cute!

While I'm here in Vegas at my daughter's I really, really, really miss my bathroom scale. Yes -- she has one, but I don't know if it weighs exactly the same as mine! And I don't want to just add or take away a pound either. I'll try to be good, but it's not the easiest thing here! First of all we have a severe personality clash between me, my daughter and my grand-daughter! Whew! Sparks flew yesterday. I will not sit idly and listen to a smart-mouthed teen bad-mouth me. My temper was very short. And that's all I have to say on the subject. More peaceful today as she is in school. Happy about that.....

I love reading old posts where one lists how much one weighed at a particular time and one can see what one was thinking/doing a month ago, etc. It's like a journal almost. However, rereading this, I don't see where I put any weighs in the post itself, probably thinking my ticker would speak for itself. So, I'll put the 243 in here and come back the middle of September, just before my doctor's visit and see where I'm at. 240 will be my 10% so I'll be excited to get there and assume I will by then.

Thanks, we, the people of Arizona, never expect any really nice weather until October, although September will have a few decent days scattered in. We have to just kind of adjust our schedules, altho there are the die-hard golfers that you see out on the course regardless of what the temp is. Personally I don't know how they do it, I couldn't. My exercise routine goes indoors when those triple digits hit. Yesterday it rained during the night and the morning was a lovel 70, although humid for AZ but still tolerable due to the lower temps.

Our season is definitely winter.....when everyone else is shivering and maybe shoveling snow, we are in our outdoor pools, enjoying life with nothing warmer than a sweater on. Last winter I didn't even get my leather jacket out of the closet!

Time for me to get some work done, although I love chatting on these various teams, time is passing me by. Have a wonderful day!

Hugs, Eve

Thanks for the reminder Eve. I will dust off the CD player and dance. I am sure I need a change in activity.
I have been hearing about the terribly hot weather you are having, and I am so sorry. I hope it will cool down before too long.

Hi Luigi

We're about the same age, but I'm 20 pounds heavier than you, and of course being 70 has a lot to do with struggling with losing. The older you are the harder it is. The closer you are to your goal the harder it is. Why all of that is true is probably that as you age your metabolism slows down, and even though we go for our walks, our body is used to that and it doesn't have to work as hard to do it. We need to give it a jolt every so often and switch to a new activity. Put on some fast music and do a little jitterbug for 20 minutes or so. Bet that will rev up the system and use up some calories!

Be thankful you can take outdoor walks. Here in AZ our temperatures are running 100 to 115+ degrees so it is now out of the question to do outdoor walking. Wish I was a better swimmer, I'd take up lap swimming for the summer months.

Hang in there! Eve emoticon

Finally we are having beautiful New England mornings!
I have increased my morning walks from 30 to 60 minutes but seem to be stuck weight wise. I lost 5 pounds in 2 months and now nothing. But I lost 2 inches around my waist, so that gives me encouragement. I am hoping to wear my clothes more comfortably by September rather than wearing one or two things all the time!
Has anyone else had this problem of trying to lose that last 10 pounds? I think being 70 makes it many times harder.

Our famous Mid-Atlantic humidity appears to have moved in. August is our worst month though, I think. I'm working inside to redo my understair storage space and hall closet so I can convert my hall closet into an extra pantry for my little kitchen space. I have 3 months worth of cereal and popcorn coming from Amazon early next week and it would be nice to have somewhere to put it by then, LOL.

Hi gals -- boy this hot weather is doing a number on all of us, isn't it? It used to be that it would be about 70 if I got up really early, like 5:00 a.m. I have noticed now that even at that hour it is 80! I have started doing my routines of walking or bike riding in the gym, just can't take the heat.

And around here July & August are the very worst months. Our monsoon season, so besides being 115 or more, it also get's humidity!

Hi Margo ....I was doing terrific on my morning walk routine until the weather got really hot out here. With temperatures in the high 80's and low 90's by 6 Am I have totally lost my walking routine. I'll get back to it when the desert heat cools down in September.
My routine was to get up, get dressed, grab my water and et out of the house. Turning on the computer was a reward when I returned home from the walk. That worked for me !!

I figured out this morning that I'm losing about a pound every 6 days (or, at least, lost my last pound at that rate :-) so I'm looking to be in the next 10 down on August 6th. I'll see if my prediction powers work.

I'm working now on getting consistent walking each morning. I have trouble just doing it. I get working on the computer and having a good time here at SP and have to push myself out of the chair. I don't like the "negative" encouragement I give myself either, "It's only for half an hour. . ."
