It was funny; I went to get the plate and had a perfect ice frisbee, very colorful with the orange and green of the carrots and spinach. I will have to try that for a "healthy" drinks bucket, to keep the drinks cool, or a centerpiece sort of thing for a party.

They say "it's the thought that counts" so I'd say you did the right thing with the bunny rabbits! It does make you wonder what and how they manage to find anything to eat.

Unlike ourselves, inside, nice and warm, and stuffing outselves! lol

The weekend before Christmas we had a couple feet of snow and Christmas Eve my husband noted that we had rabbit tracks in the backyard. I felt bad so shoveled the grass :-) and made a 2-3 foot hole down to it and grated a couple carrots and put the carrots and a large handful of fresh spinach on a plate and out in the backyard, in the cleared space.

Well, rabbits don't eat carrots, they eat carrot tops! and apparently they don't eat spinach either (Peter Rabbit ate baby "lettuce"). The plate is still there and still as full :-)

We've had rain and higher temps since and the snow is gone. Guess I should bring in the plate?

We're having rain/drizzle all day and it's pretty cool again. I did have an opportunity to stop a couple days ago at the store and get steaks we cooked on the grill but by the time they were ready, it was too cool and damp out, the sun was down :-( Daylight savings time ends Sunday the 1st so things will get even colder and darker. Hurry up March and Spring!

It's getting cool enough here that I'm going to make my dinner in the crock pot instead of letting my husband cook it outside :-) We did have burgers from the grill last night but I was running around in a teeshirt and was cold! I have a touch of heat on this morning.

I really liked the convention, would go to another one near me. It was very comfortable being with all these people with a common online site background, wasn't hard to start up conversations or feel you had to explain much, etc.

The convention was well run, very active in terms of things happening. It mostly took place in one large auditorium and I had been afraid that just sitting and listening to "speeches" all day would get boring but there was lots of diversions and the talks were all active and different, one from the other. There were good videos and snacks to sample :-) and the Spark Store area was large and almost like a real store (racks of hanging teeshirts, etc.) and there was a giant-sized huddle wall and wheel to spin and a couple pages of activities to perform to get points here. I loved the large, color Goodies cards, familiar/regular Goodies like on here, I gave my "apple" goodie to Becky Hand the Dietitian and there were other situations where it was fun to try and match card to person you were giving it to, just like on here.

The last section of the day was SparkGuy talking about the book and going into detail about what it is about. That was very exciting as it's a whole different, bigger world than on here. Here is just a starting point for "The Spark" and learning what "spark" means, etc. really broadened one's horizon and appreciation of the site.

I've been "camping" most of the week in the Cincinnati area for the Spark Convention and it's been raining the entire time. Haven't been able to cook out even one time! I'm taking all my good meals back home with me (but not the snacks and fruits, etc. :-)

That sounds very nice, Scotty! We have a screened in patio, but waiting for it to get a little cooler before trying to sit out there...I am so looking forward to fall temps!

It wasn't dinner on the deck for me; however I did enjoy breakfast on the patio this morning. The temp was about 75 to 78 and I made my company and myself a delicious "breakfast sandwich" of 100% whole wheat toast, a slice of ham, hard fried egg and a slice of American cheese. Served with sliced avocado and a small glass of raspberry-goji juice. Add coffee and sit back and enjoy!! Plus, I'm losing weight...so you can't beat that.

This summer sure went fast! We have 80's still but in the mornings I have to put on a sweatshirt or something first and change into teeshirt around 11:00.

One of these nights we're going to test out our RV and see what we need to go to Cincinnati and the Spark Convention for a week. We're staying in East Forks State Park, www.dnr.state.oh.us/parks/eastfork/t
ab
id/732/Default.aspx
an Army Corps of Engineers park so full of all kinds of activities. But we'll just go to an RV place we like near son/daughter-in-law for a night or two, they borrowed our RV, were using it for an extra bedroom for guests last month.

Tonight we're going to just cook burgers out on the grill, the evenings are wonderfully cool and clear this week.

We had a great 4th; our daughter-in-law and the grandkids were visiting up north, her cousin or something so we had #1 and #2 son out and a good friend and the five of us went through burgers and hot dogs, corn on the cob and spinach salad.

We can see 8-10 local firework shows and the doctor across the canal waited until 10:00 to start his and it was exciting as some tipped over at the the end and set a small fire on a hillside and one shot back toward his house but otherwise was very impressive and the highlight.

We didn't seem to have any bugs but people all up and down the canal were out with their citronella candles and the next door neighbor had a fire in their firepit so I'm sure the bugs knew they were unwanted; there was only one bat flying around so must not have been very good pickin's.

We've had a couple cookouts, father's day being the last one. Looks like the abnormal rain has gone so there's just the usual chance in the afternoons of thunder showers; makes it interesting, especially if you're out on the boat and have to race it in, lol.

I'm excited; I just contacted a "personal chef" in my area and asked would he come teach me to clean/cook the pan fish/crappy I can catch from my dock. LOL. I would love to be able to go out and catch my own dinner. It's too bad my husband doesn't like fish but maybe he can teach me recipes that my husband would like.

Hey, Sexy! Is that a new picture of you? Looking good. I took a new one of ME too, but I don't know if I dare post it on here -- although it is less risque than a swim suit. What do you think? Shall I download it?

I'll write to you on your personal mail for more details. But I didn't get arrested -- so I must not have been too rowdy!

Doesn't that just FRY you when the doctor's scales are always higher? The important thing though is the progress, and I'm sure even those numbers were lower than last time you were in. And all your other numbers are in the good zone! emoticon

You are doing great!! Even the doctor said so, doesn't that make you just know it has been worth it? Good for you, Eve! (Ok, now what is the story on your Friday night? Was it all you expected, did you have a good time? Did your friends compliment you on how good you looked? Or did you get drunk and disorderly and the cops had to haul you in!! emoticon )

Maybe you just don't want to talk about it - C'mon, you can tell me, I won't say anything!! emoticon

Maggie, you are doing great. I hate it when a doctor cannot even pay you a compliment on your progress when you are doing well and staying on track. Keep on Sparking, and enjoy the lovely time to get out and do some walking along the water while the weather is nice! emoticon

After a very long time, I thought I would check in and update my status, and say Hi to anyone still there who remember's me. I am doing well, have had some setbacks, but not in the weight loss department. My goal has always been my Sparkpeople name, Iwillbe145. I am able to see the goal line now, I weighed in this morning at 152. I still have nearly 10 lbs to go, and I can see by my belly that I will want to continue loosing until I have a waistline again, but I am so happy to have come so far.

It always amazes me that regardless of how well a person's weight seems to be going -- it's always going to be a bit higher at the doctor's office. I stepped on the scale, fully dressed, with shoes on, just before I left the house. 146.6

Get to the doctor's office, first thing is to step on the scale, maybe 30 minutes has gone by = 148.0
Now explain that one??!! But that is soooo much better than 162 or whatever when I began seeing him the very beginning of 2008!

Yes, the discussion was very good. He said my cholesterol was 166 and bad cholesterol 76 -- both of which were just fine! He's happy and me too!

Stress test results showed no blockage whatsoever, and the treadmill portion was A-OK -- I'll live another year at least. haha

Have a nice cook-out -- watch out for the red meat.

I'm probably having my first "real" dinner on the deck tonight, a friend is coming over (I hope) and we'll do steaks on the grill and baked potatoes (in the oven, not on the grill :-) and corn on the cob, etc. We got over 90 yesterday and today is supposed to be even bigger and badder and possible thunder storms again too.

Hope your stress test discussion went okay, Eve. I did the doctor Friday and didn't really like the numbers but at least they weren't any worse than they have been.

It will probably be one of the last fun times we can count on here, summer is just around the corner and Tuesday the temp went up to 107 already -- hope that is not a sign of a really hot summer. Otherwise, I'm going to be BEGGING some of you folks in cooler climates to let me come and visit you!!!!!

Heading to the doctor now to discuss the results of my stress test.

Hugs, Eve

You are such an amazing leader, and terrific about sharing the details. You have all the coping skills, just share them with the team, tell everyone how you survived this event and had a good time. (And what your challenges are as well) I know you to be so positive, and that helps people so much. I get frustrated with the "I messed up and now what do I do?" folks, when there is all the help and skills and information they need here on SP! emoticon

I'm sure you'll do fine!

Remember to take "sample size portions" of everything, and concentrate on the social aspect, getting to know and talk with everyone! Let him know before he buys the steak to make yours a smaller cut, maybe a 6 oz, and then he won't be expecting you to finish a huge piece of meat. You already know the drill, go for the veggies and fruits and lay off the sauces or have them on the side. "Share" your dessert with him or just take a bite of his. Take your positive attitude with you and you will have a wonderful time!!

And I want a complete report!! LOL!

Hi Charlotte -- well, I'm his "date" so I don't have to bring a single thing except myself. He is buying me a filet or NY strip steak and he is furnishing the wine and is also making a tropical fruit salad. He likes to cook. Sounds like a carefree evening.

I'll let you know all the yummy things we have to eat. I know my weight will go up, but it's after my doctor appt. so my weight will be at it's lowest for that, and I can lose whatever I gain fairly quickly.

I'm looking forward to Friday night -- have just been invited by friends who live on the golf course. Each Friday they have a Steak Fry (grilled of course) and the host provides the wine, everyone brings their own favorite steak, and brings something decided upon by the host. Lucky me -- a single guy who lives there invited me! (I hope this isn't parallel to "meeting the folks?" but I think it will be a lot of fun. Not "on the deck" but it will be "on the patio" and overlooking the golf course. Temperature is supposed to get to 89 (dry) and by 5:00 will have reached it's peak and be on the way down. Sounds good to me emoticon especially since I reached 145 this morning!

Our "eat on the deck" weather is soon coming to an end. It will be too hot!!! Sounds crazy unless you have experienced the 'dry heat' we have in Arizona.
But while chatting with my sister on the phone a few minutes ago, I found it was delightful to sit on the covered patio as it is a lovely 80 degrees right now.

I believe I'll go out and cut back some of the really long stems of the bougainvillea, they are gorgeous, but hanging into my neighbor's yard (and they may not like them).

I think it's time! Going to have my husband cook a little pork tenderloin on the grill and we'll eat it outside on the deck; will be one of our first 70-degree days here in Maryland and then back to the rain for a couple-three days.

Team, with Easter right around the corner it's time for all of us to start entertaining thoughts of BBQ and other fun things that get us outside. Being out in the fresh air is good for us, and even when we do not think of it as "exercise" we tend to get a little more than usual as we walk around looking at how the flowers are doing, or pulling a weed here and there. It's just a GOOD time of the year for most of us. Of course for us folks in Arizona it is also the time of year we yearn for cooler places - so we take off for the mountains, or for the snow birds among us, perhaps back to whatever cooler state we were orignally from. I'm from Minnesota, but as I'm alone, don't think I'll be heading back there.

Time to clear out our winter time mode of thinking and doing a clean sweep. That means getting in shape for the spring and summer type of clothing. We expose more of ourselves, so we'd all like to be a little bit slimmer version, right? There is still time to get in a little extra time at the gym and look good for "shorts season."

Happy Easter to you all!

I know the folks in the colder climates are feeling (right about now) like spring is never going to get here. While here in Arizona we are looking at our plants in full bloom and everything looking gorgeous. But, you all know that pretty soon I'm going to be grumbling about how hot out it is, and that's when you folks will be telling about your wonderful days on the patio or deck, grilling and enjoying your yards -- while the only enjoyment we will get by then will be looking out our windows while we are cooling off with our air conditioners.

My husband's having trouble with his back so changes chairs every hour or two and yesterday wandered out to sit on the deck! It was upper 50's/low 60's and I wandered out before I drove off for my evening activity and stood looking over the edge, down onto the "hill" portion of my yard and was surprised as I saw beautiful yellow flowers like forthysia only I don't have any forthysia so realized it must be the jasmine I have planted there! However, it's kind of a mess, all entangled in a large clumb of heavy grass. But there's hope for Spring around here. I've had my husband cook on the grill once or twice on really warm days (which we've had exactly one or two of :-) It's coming!

Charlotte, I am not at my goal weight. I am only 5'2 and have a small frame, so I have a long way to go. I have listed my goal at 135 only to make it seem somewhat reachable to me. I'd actually like to get back to 125 and even that is a lot more than I used to weigh on an average. But considering my age and other factors in, even if I only attain the 135 it will make me feel and look a lot healthier.

I know you will attain your goal this time, Charlotte because you have the initiative and have what it takes, mainly determination. I know this is an important goal to you, and we can be strong and persistent when something is important to us. And one of the rules I learned when I first joined SP, if your friends don't support your goals and efforts then it's time to get some new friends. Your life and health is definitely worth it.

You're worth it, baby! Go for it. Be that new person and be happy with yourself.

Eve,

WHEN I reach my goal weight, and this time I am sure I will, my goal for a year will be to just maintain it. I have lost weight only to re-gain it too many times. I have never yet maintained, but this will be the time I WILL achieve that goal! After a year, with the consultation of my doctor I intend to reassess to see if 145 is my best weight or if I need to loose another 10 or 15 pounds. I know I will be miserable and make everyone around me miserable if I am so thin I hurt, I have been there too. I want to find and keep the weight that is best for my health. I know it is a lifetime commitment, and I will succeed from now on. And SP has been such a help in keeping me on track. People like yourself who have gotten there are the most inspiring to me, so even when you are at your goal weight you help the rest of us to keep the vision in our sights. Thank you!

You are too kind, Charlotte! Read my last blog "Are We Ever Satisfied?" It says it all. I realize I am luckier than some with my weight, so just know that we all have someone that you look at with envy and drool over. But it does make you stop and think that even if we reach that goal, are we satisfied? Or do we change to another, harder goal?

Thanks for the nice compliment, Charlotte! I'm glad you are back to posting as I've missed hearing from you.

I've been away a few days myself, on a cruise to the Mexican Riviera. Can you believe that I had 338 emails on one address and another 40+ on another? Wow! I still haven't gotten them completely cleared up. Catching up is hell, isn't it? Good news is that I only gained one pound during the cruise.

And speaking of "dining on the deck" I did eat outside the night before I left for vacation. It has been super weather in Phoenix lately. Usually we have been hitting a high of 80 to 82 during the day.

We had great weather yesterday too, my husband and I ended up at Baltimore's Inner Harbor for a bit of a walk/sit in the warm looking at the water, etc. We got other chores done too with our RV and dropping some books off to a charity in downtown Baltimore (thus getting our car trunk emptied finally). It rained in the night but today is not too shabby, 50's but very windy. I think the cold is slowly coming back so we'll be back in the 40's where we belong for this time of year.

Hi Maggie, Eve ~
I've been absent most of Jan and Feb has been no better, just too much chaos going on. But in spite of it all I'm still managing to take off a few pounds, I'm down another two this week. I am back to logging in, and I got some real exercise (shoveling snow!!) today - Don't think I will be dining on the deck anytime soon, it's still covered in snow. I will be so glad to see spring this year!
Eve, you have some new pictures, you look great!
Good luck and keep on Sparking !!

We had a good share of the warm weather front that went through a couple days ago and I had my husband cook on the outdoor grill last night :-) It was a little too cool yet for eating out there, the river still has ice on it but it was fun anticipating Spring. I don't know what I've been doing, but it seems to be the right thing. I had company Sunday evening and made turkey drumsticks, mashed potatoes and stir fry veggies. For dessert we shared a Creme Brulee (my favorite dessert - and one I limit myself to indulging in maybe 3 or 4 times per year) -- all this and when I weighed in this morning I had lost a pound putting me at 147.8. It seems there is always a yo-yo between a pound or two, but at least it a two steps forward and one back, because slow but sure I am winning at getting down to lower numbers on that darn scale!

Dinner on the deck? It made me think that "maybe" I will eat my Thanksgiving feast on the patio this year as I will be alone. My dog, Amber, loves it when I spend time outside so she can run around keeping track of HER domain. Of course if there is any serious eating going on she stays pretty close at hand, just in case I'm feeling generous and want to hand down a little tidbit.

Are you all going traditional this year? Or will you be like me and deviate a bit. I've decided on roast pork, but my go-with's will be quite traditional, much like I would be having with turkey and whatever you're eating, I know it will be quite delicious! Even the leftovers!

Enjoy, only 3 days to go! Eve

Our weather has cooled this past weekend, substantially. We had our 40th high school reunion and my friend from Phoenix, I had no trouble talking into wearing slacks instead of a dress, LOL. She was cold all weekend and even my friend from Atlanta was. I drove her to the airport this morning and there was ice on the windows of the car I had to scrape!

I think I'm going to make DH go out and cook burgers on the grill though :-) Don't think we'll eat out there. I did have the balcony door open much of the night as he wouldn't let me turn the AC on (I have to have cool air to breathe) since it was going to be freezing. I had to get up and close the door around 4:00 a.m. because I was a bit too cool and was afraid I was messing up the heat for the rest of the house with my girlfriend sleeping downstairs.

I am going to try it when I get back home, Charlotte. And of course I'll let you know what I think, and also if I revise it in any way. I'm great at making little changes to recipes so it pleases my palate, but then, that's what cooking is all about.

Thanks for posting so much -- you are a jewel!

Yes, I did submit it, I haven't heard back yet. They did suggest that it might be too similar to some other Harvest Stew type recipes, but this one is so savory and hearty that it has a unique flavor. You are right the sweet potato and apples give it a kind of sweetness, but with the garlic and spices and salsa (I use mild salsa), it's just a rich, hearty taste. It's the kind of thing you can throw in whatever you have in the fridge. I think you could put in celery and turnips and acorn squash, and I want to try it with some pumpkin in it. I also add a couple of tablespoons of "Tiger Sauce" and Picapeppa Sauce" but I don't know if they are available everywhere. If you can find them they would be by the Worcestershire sauce and A-1 sauce.

If you do brave it and try my recipe, I would love to hear back, be honest, don't spare my feelings, it may not be for everyone. But I just now heated it up and had another dose of it for dinner, and I just love it.

The weather has turned chilly and rainy, fall is here now. We had a beautiful summer, but it had to end sometime.

I gotta run, have to feed the bulldogs and I want to get everything done before the debate tonight. I think this one may be a real eye opener!

I'd like the recipe -- although it's hard for me to visualize sweet potatoes and apples in a vegetable "stew" but I'm willing to give it a try.
Have you thought to submit it to the place that giving us recipes each day?

My Harvest Stew!
I just discovered my wonderful delicious veggie stew recipe that I submitted is listed at the bottom of our page of topics, as "RECIPE".

I kind of invented it, then liked it so much I wrote it up. I had it again tonight, the third time In probably two weeks that I've made it. It is sooo good and not hard to do, just cut up some vegies and stew them til they are soft. I love the flavor that the sweet potato and the apple give it. Anyway if you want to give it a try, I originally had chicken in it, but I think it really holds it's own as a purely vegetarian dish, one you can modify with whatever you like in it. Please let me know if you give it a try!!

Hi
I grew up in Delaware, Pa and NJ. I still go "home" for HS reunions to Wilmington. It is a beautiful area to live!
I see you came to California to fly your kites, did you ever get to the Washington or Oregon coasts? I have gone out with friends to Ocean Shores in Washington to the kite fests. Anymore they are so crowded you can hardly find a place to park, but I loved watching the amazing stunt kites. What do you fly? And where do you go? When I lived out there we used to spend summer vacation at Avalon, NJ. Great memories. Our beaches here are not as warm.

Thanks for writing!

Hi All!
I'm in Washington state, in a small town in a rural county, and less than an hour to some great cities (and shopping). It is a wonderful place to retire. I found a nice affordable little cottage almost big enough for me and my two english bulldogs. I was a Navy (Submarine) wife, and lived in a lot of different states, and I have loved Washington so much since moving here, I always say that if the weather is bad here, it is usually worse everywhere else. Today it is 68 degrees, partly cloudy and dry. I have a small yard with the most beautiful soil, it is like cocoa powder to dig in and anything grows here, the biggest problem is, ANYTHING grows here, even if you don't want it to!! LOL.
Visit my home page and drop me a line. Do you like to volunteer, or paint or knit or have dogs? I'd love to hear from you!

I was on a quest to take off some pounds when I first heard about SP. I had already lost some, but I know I would have soon lost momentum if not for finding this wonderful site. I have lost 25 lbs so far, not all of it on sp, but I continue to take it off, and to make new friends as I go. Last weekend I went on a 5k hike with some sparkpeople, came in DEAD LAST, and had a fantastic time. I have never done one of those before and it was an uplifting experience. I would love to do it again.

Tell me what you do to stay active. What has SP meant to you!
Thanks for listening

Hey Papa! I'll have you know there have been days on end when I was the ONLY one to huddle. Now everyone knows it's darn hard to huddle alone too, so I think it's wonderful if we're getting a few more people to join in on that.

I like to do it first thing in the morning, but this morning I was out in the back yard while it was still what us people in Arizona consider "cool" which means anything under 90 degrees. It was so nice I didn't even have to turn on the a/c until about 11:00 a.m. Plus.....I've gone two nights in a row now where I didn't have to have it on at night.

I swear fall must be right around the corner.
Hugs! Eve

I can't imagine living in an area that has hurricanes and things like that, which is one reason that I live where I do. The weather isn't the best in the summer, but other than heat and no humidity, we never have any of the catastrophes suffered by some of the other states.

I would be like you, afraid to order the tuna "rare" although when I lived in Japan I ate shahimi which is raw fish. It was a natural food of the area, and I have never been squimish about trying native foods but when it comes to tuna, that is such a 'solid' fish that I stay away from it, same as halibut. I go for the lighter, flakier ones like mahi mahi, trout or even catfish. I find monk fish delightful too, have you tried it? I used to eat salmon, and loved it; but now my stomach has decided it's a bit to rich for my system. I can eat a little but not an entire meal of it.

Today I went out to breakfast (late) then shopping for a new coffee maker -- tramped around three different stores and finally, due to price and the selection, will go back to Walmart and buy it there. Linens & Things is going out of business in some of the locations around me and offered a 20% discount on everything, but their price for the coffee maker of my choice was still $59.99, while Walmart had the same exact one for $34.99. Duh! It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out which one I'm going to buy! Besides, if anything goes wrong, it's easy to return products from Walmart. The good thing is I walked hundreds of steps by going to all these different stores!

We're having rain and wind from Hurricane Hanna tomorrow but really downgraded; my husband was fearing 60 mph winds this morning and brought in all the chairs from the deck and turned over the table, tied up the bimini on the boat, etc. But the weather reports now just say heavy rain and 25 mph winds. It's supposed to start around 1-3 tonight but be over by tomorrow night and Sunday's supposed to be really nice and lots cooler. This heat in the 90's has been killing me, especially the humidity. I felt like I was drenched while shopping IN the store, nevermind walking to/from and loading/unloading groceries. I took a nap with DH today because I was so beat but a friend came over in the middle of that and we all went out to dinner.

I had Tuna in a restaurant for the first time ever but ordered it "medium" afraid of just seared. This was blackened too and pretty good if a little dry. I'd read about cooking tuna and know it needs to be rare but was a little afraid. The waiter, whom we always have, said it's not fishy though and that's how he has it. Don't know if I'll be brave enough next time or go back to my usual salmon or some of the other fish they have (this is a really good seafood restaurant 5 minutes down the road from us).

Too much rain to eat out recently, plus I've been doing some cooking in the crock pot. I think tonight we'll do burgers on the grill, something simple.

I've gotten back into cooking recently, just ordered some interesting cookbooks, including two copies of one to give a good, male friend a copy of one.

The friend doesn't do any cooking; I don't know if he's afraid or what, but he buys Sam's Club huge frozen lasagnes and things like that and then hacks them up into individual meals for his freezer.

It's an NPR show cookbook and he listens faithfully to NPR and this book might be his speed as it's "discussion" and humor, etc. rather than strait cooking. He might enjoy reading it.

He's in the habit of bringing meats over here and having me cook it for the three of us but usually they're too much food or he doesn't have the "concept" right even.

Earlier this summer he decided to buy a huge amount of ribs so was bringing them over but wanted to marinade/barbecue them and I guess only had ideas from what he'd seen on TV and thought you had to have two different kinds of "barbecue sauce" to do each task. He bought a barbecue sauce with the word "marinade" in it and one with just the words "barbecue" and he bought like 3 of each as he didn't know you could just stick the ribs in a large plastic baggie and squeeze the sauce all around (only half of one bottle :-) and let it sit for a few hours; he thought that it took the whole weekend too, that you marinaded for 48 hours, LOL. I still have sauce he bought and brought over in June I think!

I just read the other day that if you spray the area you are sitting in with Listerine that all the bugs will stay away. It's worth a try! They say even the kind you get in the Dollar Store works for this, just put a little in a spray bottle and spray the deck, chairs, etc. where you're sitting and you will have a peaceful evening.

We had a great 4th outside. We're on the water and lots of neighbors are wealthier and go up to Pennsylvania and buy "real" fireworks and put on great displays. We have a doctor across the way that does every year. Because of how we're situated, we have a 180 degree view and usually there are 8-10 displays going on at once that we can see; a couple "near"/our neighbors and others in the next canal/street over and some further away.

Some people go out in their boats and there are displays in other water communities that can be seen from boats on the water. There was a large one like that last night but it is far enough away on land that all one can hear is the booming as they set off the rockets. But a couple people still had a few fireworks left for last night. We sat on our bedroom/upper balcony and watched for them, until the mosquitoes drove me inside, LOL. I have enough little bites on my ankles/feet to drive me mad in the middle of the night with the odd itch or two.

I love cooking out on the deck although Richmond,Va weather can be very hot and humid. On those days, I limit deck time to coffee on the am. Like today it is almost 100....comfort index is 102! When I cook I grill the fresh veggies in a little olive oil,,Love to grill chicken..yum...About the ribs,I think they tend to be high in fat, calories and salt but you also have to calculate the sauce you use..that can add a few hundred cal..... emoticon

The idea of dining on the deck certainly has its appeal; in the part of Arizona where I live it's just too darned hot (maybe misters would help) to go out there except in the very early morning. It would be a lovely place to eat in the evening, and your house wouldn't get hot from cooking, but I doubt if most could even stand to be out there for the BBQ time.

Watch those ribs, Margo. They will sabatoge your diet every time. I had just half of a half rack the other day at lunch (was sharing those with a friend) and even from that innocent little taste the weight shot up over a pound. They say it takes 3500 calories to lose a pound, and that seems to be true, but let me tell you, sometimes I think about 300 is enough to make you gain one! Anybody else had that same thing happen to them? Ya! It's unreal.

I'm so glad summer is here and we can usually grill and cook out; it is so much easier and tastier and I'm less likely to fix packaged stuff or eat things I shouldn't. I bought some squash and might wander out today to get a veggie holder for my grill and see if I can't grill them well with a little marinade or olive oil or something. I had a meal at a restaurant down in Florida where they grilled them and they were the best I've ever tasted.

Too, my garden is doing well; I have green beans I want to have today or tomorrow. I think we're supposed to get thunder showers tomorrow afternoon though (but a friend is bringing over ribs then too and we have a whole menu idea going between the two of us, corn on the cob, etc.) so I hope it doesn't rain.

Today's weather was so scrumptuous! I woke feeling better and don't know if it's the better weather (not humid like yesterday) or because my cold's almost gone or what but all my various symptoms are responding; better sleep, asthma lots better, knees don't hurt as much, etc. and I lost half a pound since the last time I weighed myself.

My DH and I went out to dinner to our favorite local place for the first time in over a week when we got this darn cold and we had a very good time (and I got in my weekly fish, DH doesn't like fish). I got FIVE books from Amazon (for my trip next week) so I can explore those and see what I can read now and what I have to wait until my trip to read, LOL. An embarrassment of riches. Live is good!

Margo, your description of your deck dining sounds fantabulous! It reminded me of happier days gone by when I still lived in Sedona, AZ (the AZ part was added for those of you not familiar). We had a home situated on the top of a mountain, and our front deck ran 45-feet across the front of our living/dining room. Huge home! It was a delight to dine out there or just enjoy a cocktail and watch the shadows as evening progressing playing their magic across the mountain-tops. Add to all that the splendor of the Sedona red rocks and it was indeed a magic time of the day. Relaxing, good cheer, which we oft-times shared with friends and neighbors. In the winter months you looked at all that from the omfort of the living room which was entirely glass on that side of the room, a roaring fire going behind you as you gazed out at the cloud formations hanging onto the tips of the mountains. The snow seldom came up close and personal, but it was there for your viewing pleasure dusting the tops of each and everyone of the mountains surrounding us.

We live in a tiny townhouse on the water and redid our whole outdoor space last summer. Tonight was our first real outdoor grilling/eat on the deck. It's so peaceful (we live right next to Aberdeen Proving Ground, so with the exception of occasional air raid drills and house-shaking explosions, LOL no one is allowed "near" the area so it's less populated "that way"). On the other side of us is the Gunpowder Falls State Park:

www.stateparks.com/gunpowder.html

and that's got protected wildlife so we have lots of great blue herons, comorants, the purple martins are back, ducks, Canada geese, etc. I have a little pier I can fish off of for panfish (if I knew how to clean them, so I just throw them back) and fishermen come down our canals and there's boats coming and going, always a bit of interesting activity to watch. We have wonderful neighbors on both sides (but they have dogs and we have cats :-) so being so close to neighbors isn't a problem; we talk over barbecuing/dinner. The one neighbor's son mows our lawn and does any heavier chores my husband and I can't do. It's a wonderful, "dreamy" (my husband's favorite word to describe it) retirement so far!

But tonight Scott had to drive from his business partners' house in Northern Virginia back up I-95 to us here north of Baltimore and it took him over 3 hours because of the traffic. He walked in the door at 7:00 and I handed him a couple burgers to grill and he's all better now, LOL.
