Great bargains Gail. Sounds yummy too. We don't have any co-ops near us but do have the farmers markets to get fresh veggies but not all are organic but some are. I got some of the 1st corn of the season from Zellwood and we enjoyed that with some zucchini and summer squash that I cooked in a bit of olive oil. Yummy-even Abbie liked the veggies!

Good afternoon

I went to the Co op yesterday to get some organic kale and I hit pay dirt. They had reduced lots of veggies including kale, two sacks of Roma tomatoes, an eggplant, a head of Romaine lettuce, and 4 large beautiful red peppers. I also picked up a few fresh organic basil leafs. All these organic veggies were just over $10. That was a real bargain.

Well, today I got busy. I made home made tomato sauce, oven roasted eggplant and oven roasted red peppers in olive oil. I also made a chicken casserole, a version of one I saw on PBSs Jacques Pepin. Everything came out great. Quite good since the chicken, eggplant and peppers were first attempts for me. Won't need to cook for a few days.

TLL that was quite a bargain on the toothpaste. I try to stock up when I have good dollar values on my coupons.
I am still aching today so after my walk decided to be kind to myself and take it easy. Planning to make pork chops with dressing for dinner and fresh corn on the cob and some zucchini, squash and onion

Today I got all of my cleaning in, taking a break from work and will make it a Sparkpeople day!

My housemate agreed to have leftover food from yesterday...pasta salad and Cincinnati chili...a luxury in this house. I didn't feel like cooking today either.

However, I do need to sort through my coupon binder and probably will late tonight. Alot of them expire today.

This past week I went to Dollar Tree and bought 7 tubes of toothpaste for $2.00 with coupons. I am not sure if I want to save them for my own personal use or in toiletry crafts. Either way the toothpaste will come in handy.

I hope you have a good day! There isn't very much vitamin D around here today. I am dreaming of sunny days filled with yard sales soon!

Ah, Gail, I do love my gardening-it is my escape from thinking about "life" in general and DH's health issues! I have many who would love to have me "plan and do" their landscaping but these days I am lucky to get my own done and then work on the park's gardens too.
I ordered some metal "birds" for the park so hoping they are nice. Will do pics if I am pleased when they arrive.
I had to take an anti-inflammatory last night-I was miserable and not able to sleep so....that helped and I was able to finish the back garden today. It took 2 more hours of digging out the old mulch and hauling off 8 more 5 gallon buckets and I pruned my butterfly tree. The back looks nice now.
I easily got in 10K today. Treated myself to a nice shower and relaxed when I finished about 2 this afternoon.

Good Morning:

As you all know I'm in love with everything Italian. Well, yesterday I started to read Wikipedia in Italian. It's not as complete as the English version as far as I have seen. The entries are completely independent of each other, not a translation. Maybe I've lived under a rock most of my life, but after reading several bios of famous opera singers I was disillusioned to learn that most of the males and many of the females had "indiscretions". Perhaps it's just to be expected with extended separations as they tour and don't see their spouses for long stretches. None-the-less I'm a hopeless romantic and had hoped for something more.

OK, I'll get off my soap box. Back to reality and day to day stuff.

Enjoy the weekend everyone.

Pat: Hey, darlin', when you're all done you are welcome to come to my place and do my landscaping. LOL Take is easy on yourself. With all the stress you're having with Bill's health you must expect it will have an effect on you. Sending you lots of support.

I continue to work on my back garden-I can remember when I would have whipped this out in a day or 2 and now it is taking me days! My back will only allow me to bend over for so long and this is on a slight hill so makes it even worse. I am a little over half done now and had to make another run to get more of the mulch and now starting to bring home some pea gravel to fill in areas where the new edging left bare areas. I am still shooting to be done by Sat.

Gail, I love the peppers in a crockpot after a good 4 hours of cooking. My freezer is filled with stuff my housemates get then never use as they rely on me to do the cooking.

Have a good one!

TLL: You know, you can make stuffed peppers and freeze them. I stuff mine with ground beef and rice, and have a tomato base sauce.

Pat: Sorry Bill didn't learn anything definitive, but at least it's not bad news.

Sandy: Let us know what happens with the FT job.

Nice and sunny here today. It's supposed to rain, but I hope it holds off till tonight. The neighbor boy is supposed to mow late this afternoon.

Sending you all good wishes for a happy day.

Poor DH went thru the test and nothing showed up-now the dr wants us to call immediately when he has another attack and he will order a test ASAP and hopefully then it will show something-waiting 10 days wasn't the best idea. He is actually feeling pretty good today-go figure!

Gail - Happy Birthday emoticon

Vali - I am sure that you are happy you had your Mom there to help you. How are you feeling?

Pat - How is DH doing?

I have been working about 26 hrs. a week plus my business. I have had 1 day off the pass 2 weeks. I have 3 days off this week only because I have a dentist apt this Thursday. I apply for a Full-time position at work but, I think another gal might get it. They have been training me for Jewelry as I said before. I work tomorrow at 6am. I do cash office first then work on the pants after that. Our big, big boss is coming in this week so I want everything to look really good.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Val it sounds like the move went really well for you and I bet by the time Mom heads home that everything is pretty much put away and you won't have any boxes to trip over. She must be a real Dynamo! How great that the move is now behind you and awesome that you are happy in the new apt. I am sure you will love the a/c during the summer.
I was up before 7 so I could walk and then home to get Bill up as I left he and Abbie sleeping. He couldn't eat so really all he had to do was get up and get dressed so tried to make it so he didn't think about that. I actually ate my yogurt before I got him up. He couldn't even take his meds before we went so I took them along and he took them after we stopped for a bite as he was starved by the time we left the hospital. We left home about 8:45 and got to the hospital about 9:15 and they promptly got him registered and he was taken in immediately. Then it was a LONG wait for me. They did the sonogram 1st and evidently did not see any stones because then they did the other test. It has a long name that I can't pronounce let alone spell. They inject him with a dye and then it takes time for that to enter his system and then they take pics of his abdomen over the next 2 hours. Finally about noon I asked about him and they took me back where he was and I got to sit with him till the test was finished. He was so glad to get out of there-he needed a potty break!!! I am hoping the dr will have the results by tomorrow afternoon but they told us it could be as late as Wed.
Bill wanted breakfast so we went to Denny's as wasn't sure where else he could get it as it was already after 1. On the way home from there, I stopped at Rural King and picked up the big container of Preen that was on sale for $19.99. I used that to help prevent the weeds in the park gardens.
While we were gone, a friend had brought me 3 wheelbarrow loads of river rock so I have spread that. Wish I had all my rock done but.....in time it will be done. They had bought a truck load and didn't need it all so he was generous to share it with me. They had put in the concrete curbing like we have and then used the rock on their hillside.
Bill and Abbie are sleeping like babies now!!!

Val: I'm super happy for you. It's great that you are getting help from your mom and friend. As for the decluttering, you go girl. I give myself small goals and then if I get more done, so much the better. For example, I recall the time I just did one section of a closet. When it was done I was able to to the rest.

Pat: Let us know how things go for Bill.

My mom has told me that if you put stale bread in the freezer it will "freshen it up." I've never tried it, but it might be worth your effort to give that a try. (I honestly do not know how long the bread is supposed to stay in the freezer to accomplish the freshening.)

Gail, I'm really glad that you had such a nice birthday celebration. It's nice to have such a wonderful family that cares enough to make your birthday special for you.

Well my move is almost complete. We got the last of the stuff from the old apartment to the new one today, with the exception of 2 of the chairs that go with my dining room table and a stew pot that's sitting on the floor in the kitchen. I'm pretty sure that's all that's left over there now.

Tomorrow a friend of mine is going to go over to the old apartment with me to fill up the holes in the wall that were left by the cable company and by hanging pictures. I can fill the holes that I can reach myself, but there are a bunch of them at the level of the ceiling and I don't feel at all comfortable standing on a ladder to fill those holes because my MS has left me with very poor balance and stability. So Caroline is going to help me fill in the holes before she goes to work, and then I'm going to hang out while Molly Maids does a thorough move out cleaning for me. I just don't have it in me to do the cleaning to a level that would satisfy my apartment complex.

Then Mom and I will come back here to the new apartment and work on putting away the last bit of stuff that's still sitting in boxes to be put away. It's only a very small number of boxes that are left to be unpacked, which is amazing when I think about the stack of boxes that used to be sitting in the middle of the living room floor. There are still boxes on shelves in the 2 bedrooms and the closets that I need to go through and either find place for the stuff that's in them or throw it away, but considering all of the stuff I had when we started this process it's pretty amazing that we have made it this far.

On Tuesday Mom will leave to go back home and I will go back to work. I'm absolutely loving my new apartment. I've still got way too much stuff and I've still got work to do going through boxes of stuff and giving things away or tossing them in the garbage, but I'm finally at a point where I'm happily moved into my new place and can enjoy it without having to worry about tripping on boxes in the living room.

There was much rejoicing!

I agree that the spraying of Pam should make a big difference and help with the sticking to the crockpot.
You can take stale bread and process it in your blender and then freeze it to use in all kinds of recipes later.
Well, we have survived another bike week. Our city hosts an annual bike weekend the last weekend of April. This was the 20th year. It is noisy and lots of motorcycles around town (about 100,000 or more) but it is only for 3 days and brings in lots of $$ to our area so we all just try to stay off the roads and let it all transpire. They have lots of entertainment for those who want to go downtown which is completely closed to vehicle traffic-well, the motorcycles get in to some of the area but not all. The street is lined with vendors for the 3 days.
Tomorrow is the big test day for DH so please say a prayer that we will find out what is causing him so much abdominal pain.

TLL: Thanks so much for the good birthday wishes. I had a grand time.

Regarding your question: If you spray the crock pot with Pam or some other non-stick spray, it won't stick, and if it does, it will be easy to get off.

Left over bread can be used when you make meat balls and meat loaf. Also, there are Italian soup recipes that call for stale bread. Hope this helps.

Gail, Happy Birthday!

Hey team. I want to use up 2 loaves of stale bread and make crockpot french toast. However, I am out of crockpot liners. The bread sticks to the sides and is hard to scrub off even if I let it soak in baking soda or dish detergent.

Do you know of any recipes I could borrow to use up stale bread? emoticon

Last night my daughter and son-in-law took me out for a birthday dinner. Wow! What a treat.! I had a lobster dinner and ordered a prosecco. Prosecco is an Italian sparkling wine from the Veneto region of Italy. I've been reading these Italian mysteries and came across it in one of the series. Anyway, everything at the celebration was great: the company, the food and the drinks.

Hugs for all,

Gail

Val sure hope you get better soon-this has been hanging on way too long. So happy Mom is there to help you with the move. Enjoy the new apt. Hope the kitchen is adequate.

Gail you seem to get some great bargains on your veggies up there-I am surprised since they aren't in season there now.

DH isn't feeling very good so hoping we don't end up in the ER. I would rather not have to deal with this like that but we will do what we have to.
Took Abbie to the groomer today and did more yardwork. I did get in about 4 mi today so not a bad day for walking.

Val: So glad your mom is there to help you. Hope you shed the bug soon.

Have had a very good past few days. Last night I visited with a friend I haven't seen in about 5 years. We had a great time and she laughed so much. It did my heart good. She has had a very tough life but she's hanging in there and is finally beginning to do things for herself.

Last evening I stopped at the co-op and got about 7 lbs of reduced organic roma tomatoes. I make my own pasta sauce and try to get these when I can. Only 79 cents/lb. They were beautiful. Today I made sauce. I broke a part of my foley food mill and called my neighbor to see if she had one I could borrow. She did not have one but she showed up a couples of hours later with a birthday gift for me. Yes, it was a foley food mill, a big one! I was so moved.

Going to try to make an anchovy sauce to put over pasta. Never had it but it's worth a try. Have any of you ever had it?

Sending hugs to all,

Gail

I've been eating crap this week while my mom and I have been moving all of my stuff to my new apartment. She'll be here until Monday and my eating will probably stink until then, but after that I'm going to try to start cooking good stuff for myself again. My new kitchen is pretty small, but I think it's going to be more than adequate and allow me to get back to healthy eating again. Hopefully I'll get well soon, too. I've been fighting whatever this is for a couple of months but I've finally been feeling better the last couple of days. Thank God for my mom and her help, but I'm really hoping to be able to participate in my own move more now that I'm feeling a little better.

There was much rejoicing!

Good going TLL. I missed out getting a $10 off a $50 gas card this weekend-just didn't need much at the store so wasn't able to spend $50 to get the deal. I am trying to use up what I have on hand instead of buying more!

DH saw his gastro doc today-the biopsies were fine so nothing to worry about there. However since he still is having abdominal pain, dr suspects it might be his gallbladder which is what we were thinking so Mon he is going for more testing. Actually hoping it is that as he is getting tired of all the tests!

Had a great time with my Aunt. I have been working a lot . They ask me to work some extra hours as they were down a couple of people. I have yet to work a full shift in jewelry as things keep happening. But, I did get to put out the jewelry this morning then I had to go do cash office as the other person didn't make it in. I am to close tomorrow with anther person in jewelry so I know how to close it down.

It has been really warm here. It has been in the high 80's which is not normal for us.

Pat - sorry your meds are not working.

Gail glad you got your new rug.

Vali - I am sorry are not feeling good.

Nan - It is always good to here about you.

Gail how nice to have a present you get to enjoy every single day and know that it was a gift from your children-may it bring you many happy years of enjoyment.

Val sorry that you have been ill for so long. It is such a blessing that your mom is able to come and help you get moved. I pray you have decent weather for your move.

Nan hope your weather improves soon.

We have been blessed with a spring this year and I am thoroughly enjoying it. We are just 79 today and low humidity and we are to be in the low 80's and down into the 60's at night for the next week. Perfect weather as far as I am concerned. I was able to walk this afternoon after church which I don't normally do because it gets too hot - hoping we can hold onto this weather for a few more weeks. We know when it gets hot it will stay that way for the next 5-6 months.

Hoping to get a load of rock tomorrow to put where I hauled the mulch from. I haven't heard from the young man who was to unload it so if he doesn't come, I will be doing it. Wish me luck!

Good Afternoon:

My daughter stopped by this morning and brought the area rug she and my son got me for my birthday. It arrived in record time.

The rug is gorgeous and fits in perfectly. It really enhances the room. I'm so happy I'm moved to tears. Now I can look at my beautiful rug while I listen to exquisite music. How great is that?

G.

Val: I'm thinking of you and sending lots of positive energy. Hope you pull out of your depression very soon.

Lucky you, getting spring weather. We've been having it, too...until this morning. When I was driving to work this afternoon it was 45 degrees...and there was a mixture of rain and snow on my windshield! Tonight it's pretty cold and it's supposed to be cold with a mixture of rain and snow for several more days...just in time for Mom and me to start my move...

Tomorrow we're going to have lunch with my friend Caroline and then get started on measuring things to see where I'll want to put them, and then of course packing. I've gotten very little of the packing done so I'm kind of embarrassed about the fact that I need my mom to help me. emoticon My excuse is that I was so incredibly sick for 3 weeks, I've got my depression thing going on, and I've been a little bit sick again for the last week and a half or two weeks. Some of that may be nervous, but it's what's been going on. I'm so tired of feeling lousy all the time. I'd much rather feel good enough to have gotten most of my stuff packed before Mom got here, but oh well. That's not what ended up happening.

So anyway, I'm probably not going to be online much for the next week or so, but don't worry...I'll be back once I'm all moved in to my fabulous new apartment. emoticon

There was much rejoicing!

I am so happy we are getting to enjoy some spring weather this year. It was almost cold this morning when I walked. I got the plants I bought earlier this week planted today. I am almost done with the park planting for this season.
Beautiful weather here-we are actually getting a spring this year. Hope it lingers for a few more weeks.

Pat. Sorry to hear your meds aren't working. Hopefully you'll get on the right stuff soon". How frustrating it must hav been for you to spend so much time at the doctor's office.

Beautiful day here today. For a while I sat on my font porch in the semi sunshine and read. Lovely.

Enjoy the weekend everyone.

Had the visit with our family physician this morning. Had 1045 appointment and didn't get out till nearly one. We had a good chat about every thing my triglycerides are going up even on medication with me exercising and eating better so doctor is changing my medicine. DH has to see two specialist-an orthopedic surgeon that operated on his shoulder and a dermatologist

Val: Produce and meat in poor areas I can be either nonexistent or of poor quality. Where I live the people are middle class but they are educated and so the demands are high. We have goods on the high quality end of the totem pole. That said, even if the produce looks good, if it's not organic it is filled with chemicals. Here are some that should, whenever possible, be organic:

Strawberries
Apples
Nectarines
Peaches
Celery
Grapes
Cherries
Spinach
Tomatoes
Sweet bell peppers
Cherry tomatoes
Cucumbers

Gail, what I mean when I say that I want to get lucky in the produce section is that I just want to find some decent stuff that's worth buying. So much of what I see in the stores is just garbage, or at least what I would consider sub par. I've read a lot of the things you seem to have seen about pesticide laden produce and so I try to get organic whenever I can, too. There's more of it around these days, or at least more of it obviously available now because people are demanding it more and more. I don't care nearly as much about my produce being pretty as I do about it being edible, as in non-poisonous...

There was much rejoicing!

Boy, did I have a surprise at the local supermarket today. They had beautiful organic tomatoes on sale for $1.19/lb.

I'm going to try to do mostly organic. I figure I'll eat less because it's so costly.

Sandy: So glad you will be getting together with your aunt. Happy that you are on good terms with her.

We got showers overnight but another sunny beautiful day here. We had 14 at breakfast this morning-I am amazed every week that our number hasn't dwindled down more. Some folks are staying down here longer this year. Afterward breakfast we went to check on a pair of shoes that Vickie had ordered-sorry to say they didn't fit so she still has no dress shoes.
I finished cleaning house when we got home as we had company arriving at 1. We haven't played cards for several weeks so was good to play again. Gals won 2 out of 3 games.

Good Morning:

Val and TLL: I'm not quite sure I understand it when you say you may get lucky at the produce section. Do you mean that you hope the things you like will be on sale? I go to Aldi's for most of my produce and they always have things on sale. Now that they have organic produce those sales are particularly good. I read a Yahoo feature that identified produce that was laden with pesticides and others that were not. I'd love to get organic produce all the time but it's an arm, a leg and a pint of blood. Let me know if you want the list and I'll send it to you.

It's finally getting to the time of year when we might start seeing some decent produce in the grocery again. I can't wait...
