Gwyn, I started a post called something like "Staying in touch after Spark closes" - I was suggesting we all keep in using email, and volunteered to compile all of our emails and send a group email so we could all stay in contact. And maybe send out a weekly check in email as well.

Then Mark suggested using Facebook, where he'd set up a private group for us.

We didn't want to lose touch with each other. Mark set up a google group, but many of us find their site very confusing and hard to use. So we were trying to find a different way to still be in a group.

Do you want to stay in touch? We didn't want to lose you, but we don't know your email address to keep you posted.

Facebook would work well nd give all of us what we want. You all non-members have to get over it, is all. It can be stritly confidential among only us. See other thread.

Hi all. We've had some discussion about Google groups, and some of us are baffled by it, or generally not happy.

BIG thank you to Mark for setting this up for us. But many of us aren't computer whizzes the way he is. I personally am reluctant to use this site, I find it confusing and cumbersome. So I was thinking about possible workarounds.

I wondered if maybe we want to just stick with email. Does anyone prefer that? Did we start an email to the group? I vaguely remember doing that. Or maybe it was another SP team - although that team started a group on My Fitness Pal, and someone said that's easier to use than Google groups.

One problem with both My Fitness Pal and FatSecret is that when someone posts a new message to the group, people don't get a notification of it. So people need to check every day for any new message. Stupid way to do things, in my opinion, but I'm not the person creating websites, just a user.

But that's why I was thinking maybe making sort of an email group would be easier - each of us would get an email with everyone's email address, and if we have a comment or question, we could send it out to everyone.

And I'll even volunteer to do a weekly check in email to everyone if the group wants that. Does anyone prefer that? Does is sound like a workable plan?

Let's discuss this, and if the general consensus is to stay with Google groups, fine, not a problem. If people want to go with a weekly (or weekly-ish) email checkin and a way to contact the whole group via email, then I can put that together.

Okay?

Consider donating blood. Covid-19 kept lots of donors from continuing and, now, July, 2021, many areas of the country are short of supplies. I have yet to explore myself, but a second member of that other team explored Cronometer (with or without hyphens, I know not) and reported this:

"I was reading you can add foods to Cron-o-meter on their website not app. But then it will show up on your app afterwards."

Sounding a little more hopeful.

If it's correct that there is no option for entering one's own things, yes, a big problem. Even things that are listed in SP's "Search" have been bypassed by me. Instead, I entered on my own so that items would be phrased in ways that I'd find. Example, I don't want to scroll a list of 600 Trader Joe items because people in spark most often enter by brand name.

The other consideration for me is being able to enter a recipe that I can then enter in the dialy listings.

I'm looking at My Fitness Pal for tracking - but am open to other possibilities. Yes, I sometimes need to enter products not listed. I also like being able to create groups for recipes I use often. And to copy day to day, since sometimes I'll make some recipe for a week.

I think we've been spoiled here. Sigh.

I've been using My Fitness Pal for the past three days. So far I like it. It makes it easy to copy and enter foods and has a lot of kosher products that SP didn't have.

And as I type this, it looks like the server is having problems.

A friend in another team is exploring another food tracker that people here may want to look in on: Cronometer. I googled and it looks as though the program is well-regarded. Here is the excerpt from my friend's post about it:
-----------------------------------

"I've spent a good portion of the 3 days setting up cronometer nutrition tracker - the basic one, not the paid for upgrade. They don't allow anyone to load nutrition information onto their site and only go by USDA and a couple other verified sites. I tracked all my food on here and on Cronometer today and funnily enough, altho' some of the foods were slightly different re calories etc. by the end of the day I have eaten:

"SparkPeople: 1455 Calories; 87g Protein; 182 Carbs; 43g Fat; Fibre 32g
"Cronometer: 1455 Calories; 88.6g Protein; 198 Carbs; 43.1g Fat; Fibre 33.1g

"Cronometer has more of the foods I eat so I don't need to enter as much as SP, the latter which is mostly my entries, except for some of the fruit/veggies and egg.

"I can live with those differences LOL!"

It's public colleges, I think, at least primarily, that offer classes to grownups for only the registration fee. I've taken a drawing class and a voice class at Borough of Manhattan Community and a theater improv class at John Jay. All I paid was the $80 fee for the semester (and my materials, of coufse, when needed). It's a fabulous deal. . My desire, however, is watercolor at Hunter, but the seats are put on reserve for their art majors. There is no way, no matter how I try to charm the teachers of the class, that I'll get in. But I'll keep trying.

Phebe, you don't need no stinkin' million spark points. You've got a million personality, goodness, talent and respectability points from the universe.

I'm game for sharing emails, but maybe Livestrong will turn out to be an option. I hope so. Otherwise, wouwldn't facebook or similar be more compact than emails? Then we'd still have the option of dropping in whenever convenient.

Sandy, I accessed SparkAmerica from Bellingham, WA - about 90 miles north of Seattle. I saw places like Akron, Chicago, Bloomington - decidedly midwest (or what I call the vowel states). And nothing west of Iowa.

And retirement is the time you get to do all the things you always wanted to do. Best part is that there isn't anyone to tell you no, you can't do that. (Well, just yourself.) Travel. Volunteer. Take up making beer or wine. Learn how to build a race car. Take classes at your nearby college or university (often free for people of a certain age). Whatever you dreamed of doing but never did.

Laurie, I know, I've been a total point collector - I was thinking today how much extra time I will have when I'm no longer mining for points! On the other hand, I was really hoping to hit one million points, just because it's a nice round number. And I'll never in my life have one million anythings.

Everyone else - do we want to just share emails and stay in touch that way? We could create an email list and when someone thinks of something or wants to ask a question or share an idea, just send an email to the group? Then we could hit "reply all" and keep in touch that way?

"Dance as if no one is watching."

A Computer Science major, recent graduate, is burdened with half my DNA.

He who deftly cracked the Maryland vaccine signup database (sshh) and got his parents shots in time to come to graduation, surely can crack the Sparky nutritional database.

Details to follow.

And we shall find other options. Other teams are already regrouping using Google doc groupings whatever that is.

And people are already sharing email addresses with me. I already got a first response to that from someone I hadn’t talk to outside of the box before. We will adapt. We’re a pretty good species that way.

I really hope that you folks can figure out a way to transfer the nutritional database. The only thing I can think of are snapshots. And that’s going to be awfully cumbersome. Snapshots for everything that’s on the list and then opening each one up and then just taking screenshots. It’s going to be very labor-intensive because all of us probably have literally in the thousands of items there.

Teammates, if you've entered status statements on your SP pages and would like to keep them, try going to your own feed, copy all and paste somewhere else. I don't know how well my attempt will hold up, but I pasted in as a Word document. It will difficult to edit out the junk because there is so much junk from the SP codes, but its my content that I realized still speaks to me.

In my method, I had to copy page by page and paste into Word page by page.

I'll stop there. Most of you are far more adept with tech than I.

Any establishment in Manhattan that's called "Pennsy" would have to be at MSG or within two blocks, don't you think? I know the place you mean, Sandy, but had never been there.

Sorry, Marky, but you don't have qualifications for work as a professional tormenter. Irritator or annoyer, maybe, but not tormenter. And I'm not surprised about your cooking interest. In fact, I think I recall your love of grilling.Your spriouting, green thumb is a happy thing. Not that I have much experience with planting, but, years ago, when a friend had a weekend place two or three hours outside the city, I'd plant at the beginning of the season and, next visit, crowed when I saw my vegetables' beginnings. It was exciting to see things grow.

It's funny that you called it Pennsy, Laurie. One of my favorite places to go for lunch, was the Pennsy next to Madison Square Garden. I moved to PA once they allowed us to work from home during the pandemic, fully knowing that they might pull that back once things opened up. I would have retired this past November had it not been for WFH. So I got a few more months out of the deal.

Can I just get a job tormenting people psychologically? Seems a natural skill set.

Yes, photography, cooking (believe it or not, if it POSSIBLY can be cooked outside, I'll give it a whirl and most people like it), volunteering with SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) so maybe people half my age who have a hankering for going into business as a professional service provider may derive benefit from my missteps?

I also am developing a green thumb. This year we have flourishing parsley, spearmint, thyme, rosemary, dill, oregano, sage, chives, green onions and basil.

Sandy, I thought you'd retired, hence, the move to Pennsy.

Photography, Mark, and the other things that interest you. For starters. Your decision, of course, and I know someone else, a public-school teacher who didn't retire as soon as eligible for full pension, because she didn't know what she'd do with herself. You'll know when it's what you want.

Now that you've brought up retirement, I'll mention that I've begun to give some thought to volunteering again. I stopped the last program I was with well before pandemic. Now I'm trying to figure out what I'd like to do next.

Splurge and spend SP points. Buy everyone a nice present. Treat yourself to catered meals and a yacht. I've been hoarding mine for years! I used to routinely take actions to collect SP points. Until I felt somewhat addicted and stopped cold turkey. I continue to show up as having a Spark Streak and get awards for my streak whenever I do anything here. Yup, it's a numbers shell game for the sake of marketing $$$. I'm pretty sure Sparkyland was sold with inflated membership numbers based on zombie members and undead teams.

This is textbook what-not-to-do. Bad management. Bad communication. Bad taste! Just plain bad. Do you want to trust the guys who can't figure out how to run this place efficiently to run a new place efficiently???

SparkAmerica lists 12 cities in Pennsylvania (3 cities) and Ohio (6 cities) plus Illinois, Michigan, and Louisiana. Curious how Baton Rouge made it to the list!

When the moving van arrives, I'll be ready to travel with the group. I will go down with the ship. emoticon emoticon

You all know me well enough to know that I'm not usually the upbeat type. But we can do this. If you want to get philosophical, as a people we've done this before through the centuries. Anyone want to get philosophical?

Congrats on your retirement! You've earned it so enjoy!

Here we think about retirement a lot. "But what would you do? I am asked frequently. I have no answer for it, so I have not done it yet.

And with Nu, Laurie ECO and others less accessible to torment online, I will even have more time and no wise way to spend it. So I keep disquieting my new bosses...

Phebe, saw Philadelphia and Pittsburgh in the list. I wonder if they show you regions based on your location?

I've had enough of moving. I've moved twice in the past eight months. I swore this was the last move, but for you guys, I'll make one exception.

Too much happening this week. We were called back to the office effective next Wednesday, so I've decided to retire. I really though I had until the end of the summer, so not sure I was mentally prepared for it. Funny, despite all my bluster about retiring this year, not sure I know what to do with myself going forward. At least I have the summer to spend by the pool. I started swimming laps for the first time in 30 years. The last time we belonged to a pool, was probably when I was in the best shape of my adult life. The facility we joined is absolutely beautiful and I have yet to have had t share the lap lane with anyone else. The main pool as a splash area for my grandkids and a very kool climbing thing with a slide a water splashing out from all over, including one of those splash bucket things.

The wheel was an imperfect body counter, for I would steadfastly avoid it like a mantra. I'm sure tracking also was counted.

We've found some decent recipes here too, but generally printed them out as we went along.

The nutrition data that each of us has entered turns out to be a treasure trove, right? I've asked specifically and, no there is no way to preserve and pack up our diligent work in that realm.

People who would like to preserve their daily tracker input are similarly out of luck. I'm just glad that I don't have that interest, but I feel for those who would find them useful or interesting later on.

Teammates, please do get to work now copying or pdf'ing or whatever your blogs, "Secrets of Success" and other things that you do want to keep. After copying/pasting my old blogs into Word, I deleted them from SP. The same with the ancient "Secrets of Success" that I'd entered in SP. Why? I asked SP staff about the "SP owns anything you write on the website" and whether rights will revert to the writers (us). SP will retain rights, but has no plans of doing anything with the works. Deletion probably means nothing, but who knows?

Now I'm wondering whether I'd want to keep any of the SPmail sitting in the in- and sent boxes, but there's far too much to look through. Many of the things were exchanges with SP members who have long since decamped.

MARK, you've got to be right about t he wheel being a body-counter. It's in line with the membership numbers despite not subtracting all those who stopped using the site through the decades.

I always understood that the wheel was a counter, so SP could show its advertisers the traffic data.

I derived tremendous benefit from being here for a decade, and never clicked on an ad or paid for any upsold anything. Too many like me caused the demise.

I would pay for the capability to efficiently export my nutritional database. I bet I am not alone.

In my early SP days, I clicked for points. After a while, I realized that I had no idea what they wre supposed to do and that they meant nothing to me. The bonus was that the occasional email from SP congratulating me for signing in daily stopped coming. Now, the joke is that, only a few weeks ago, I started clicking here and there for points, while still knowing of no reason for them. All my beautiful points, melting, melting.

Dunno.

Someone had suggested it, and since it allowed for groups, I thought to post here since it was mentioned that the other alternatives did not allow for groups.

I am starting to see that perhaps two months is not going to be enough time to figure all this out, but it’s all we have.

Sandy, I didn't notice Pennsylvania on my list of options - it all was the vowel states - Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, and Ohio. Or at least mostly only those states.

I'm totally confused by the google docs thing - my inbox was full of questions from other people who joined and have no idea how to use this new site, and apparently don't know how to send an email to just one person. Frustrating!

Settling in at one of those strictly social settings certainly is possible, but I think it makes sense to see if something similar to SP, such as Livestrong, would feel comfortable and productive. That is, once each of us learns to nagivate -- edited to insert "[sic]" -- the system.

Hm, nagravate?

Another resource for setting up is groups.io

Yahoo closed shop for support groups. We moved our group and we copied all of our archived messages going back for many, many years. It is not the same. It looks "kind of the same". It functions in the same way. But it is not as active. We lost hundreds of members. We are harder to locate if you don't know where to find us! The old neighborhood no longer exists!

Note: If you read this post earlier, look again. I've done some editing in the last two or three paragraphs.
*********************************

Again, MyFitnessPal, is an option. I've never looked into it, but way back, it was said to be easier to use the SP's tracker. It was used on smartphone and, I don't know, may be online as well.

Also mentioned earlier, Livestrong.com is a reasonable alternative to SP Tons of articles, exercises, trackers and the rest. All free and there is a "gold membership" option which provides some extras. The food tracker, MyPlate, seems to be smartphone only, with links to obtain the program for iphone and android. Tomorrow, after SP's news is really official and public, I'll ask at Livestrong about the possibility of starting our group as part of the "community" groups. That is, if they still have affinity groups and not only community message boards. Will also confirm the trackers -- whether phone only or also on the website.

In the meantime, why not look at their website, as dense as SP's seems to newcomers:

livestrong.com

(They had "teams" 10-11 years ago when I signed up but, so far, I've found no evidence either way. What a surprise, however, to find that I'm still on the roster and able to log in with my old info all these years later.)

No way does any of this mean that I'll be at the rudder of anything. I've never been thus here and that's the way it stays.

But I like the riff-raff.

I sincerely appreciate everyone who has shared an opinion here in this forum. Our discussions have been a product of this place, and they have been important.

We have been a resource to more individuals than we will ever know. The support and encouragement have been very real. I'm proud to have been a longstanding member of this team.

Personally, I'm not a fan of using FB. In my experience, it has never been a place for comfortable chatting with long ongoing conversations. I'm more of an antisocial-media type.

We can easily recreate the social experience here on Facebook. It is why Facebook exists. You have to be willing to have an account there; interest groups (even private ones to keep out the riff-raff) are easy to create.

I know how and can set it up if there is interest, and then turn over the keys to a more benevolent and trustworthy administrator or two. Just let me know.

As for recreating the nutritional databases, elsewhere, that seems like potentially a lot of work. I have no magic bullet answers.

Well, well, well. It had to happen. Money makes the world go around. I never ever see an ad here, and too many people know how to achieve that. And I have spread the knowledge of how like a Pied Piper.

Yes, I will save my blogs I guess. No, I do not plan to join the new platform and here is why. I have learned here to control by portions and thus, my weight. If I control my portions, my weight is controlled. It's easy enough to find or build a spreadsheet is the mechanics of tracking are beneficial.

I have made some friends here. Several of you are, and know who you are. Anyone who wants my email and does not have it, just ask.

Alas, it was fun. Like all good things...

I checked out the SparkAmerica thing, and you need to sign up some affiliation with a business in the region you list as your city - but they are all in the midwest. I faked it with a pizza business in Akron, Ohio, just so I could look around.

There isn't a fitness tracker nor nutritional tracker, as far as I can tell.

So I'll be heading to My Fitness Pal for that - I need my numbers just to be sure I'm on track.

Can we take this group to Facebook for a private group, or something like that?

One more thing: Watermellen is creating some kind of Google doc to continue SP groups outside of SP. I would suggest that our faithful leader, Sylph, create something similar so SP Jews can live on outside of SP.

I think having created this website and maintained it for close to 20 years or more in a free format is beyond admirable. Yes, with all the glitches, yes, with all the infighting, yes, with all the things that go wrong, we certainly have gotten our money's worth. At least that's the way I feel. I checked My Fitness Pal and it looks like five years after I joined SP I set up that account as well. They're very similar. So you're not really losing anything by switching over to something like that format. It has blogs, it has fitness trackers, it has nutrition trackers, pretty much the same layout. But after being entrenched here and especially on SP Jews, I have not really touched it in eight years or so. Now I will.

This so sad. This is the only team I've been on for a few years. I'm one of the few people in the world not on facebook so I will really miss all of you.

The only thing I use on this site is the fitness tracker -- but I must admit I'm not very consistent with exercising.

I found out a little while ago like you -- not from SP, but rather from the rank and file in the "Team Leaders==Business" team. A co-member of another team posted this link, which seems the same as Sandy's except for the two, final digits.

This isnt Goodbye, SparkFriends Its a New Beginning
www.sparkpeople.com/resource/wellness_arti
cles.asp?id=2659

This is the proposed new group, also posted by the co-member:
SparkAmericaportal.spark360.com/Account/SA
Email/.

Not the same as Eco's link, so who knows what's going on around here.

What I gather is that SP's new program will/is being marketed to the corporate and organizational world;, no more "just folks."

SP did suggest converting blogs any of us may have written on the site to PDF. I copied mine into Word. I printed my SparkPage years ago and have it somewhere; I never really updated it after the first go-round, so I'll let it be. I wonder which among my saved SP article and recipes I'd really want -- I saved things unread only for the purpose of reading "some day,." same as so many bookmarks from other sources. I suppose there are no urgent recipes in the bunch.

For those who use the food tracker, there are others. My Fitness Pal, which I've never looked at, was said to be easier to use than SP's. Livestrong.com also has a tracker. There probably are others to be found. Livestrong will also have an exercise tracker.

Addition: Just took a quick look at the Vionic, et al., link. Oooh, SP's been busy. A month or two ago I was invited by SP, along with other users, to take part in a focus group with Chris and try out the new program. As thanks for taking part in the trial, we'd be able to continue using it and the coach component, I guess, as guests. There was a follow-up email saying that the session was coming up, but, so far, no further word. I wonder if they've decided to skip the focus group trial. It seems that they moved ahead more quickly than they'd let on.

LAURIE, NYC

Consider donating blood. Covid-19 kept lots of donors from continuing and, now, July, 2021, many areas of the country are short of supplies. Contact the blood bank in your area or a nearby hospital/medical center. If you're in the NYC/NJ area, we have the long-established New York Blood Center, phone 800-688-0900.

Who got a "fair warning"? This should be plastered all over this website. There should be an announcement. There should be an annoying pop-up on all the pages.

I found out from a team member on a different team and shared it. This message should NOT be coming from the membership.

This message should NOT be on the Nutrition pages! Very disappointed in this lack of communication with those of us who should matter to management! Not surprised but disappointed.

Well at least I meet the target demographic, since I live in PA, but I didn't see a SparkLancaster emoticon

Cue: “So Long Farewell”.

At least they gave us fair warning not like AOL did when they dissolved the AOL Jewish community. It literally was there one day and the next day it was gone. They had absolutely no understanding of the communities that they had created.

100% guessing ... BUT I'm guessing SparkGuy sold the whole package including all things with "Spark" and the logo. The new corporate leadership team is the same across the board on several new organizations. (Anyone interested in primary care services in PA?) SparkGuy is not at the top of the list of corporate management. This America thing looks like a new model with a few familiar features. And America is limited to America, with an emphasis on Pennsylvania and Ohio.

I just took a look at the replacement, Spark360, and I don't understand why they need my SSN and birthday to sign up. Not sure I fully understand what this new platform is.

I seem to remember setting up ages ago “My Fitness Pal”.

I am going to take everything off and put it in my possession which is what I ultimately planned on doing anyway. I want the control of my content, not anybody else.

So what does this mean? Is Spark America a replacement? Can we migrate all our data there or do we have to go looking for a new app for food and exercise tracking?

Wow!!!!

Time to start moving all the blogs and all the main page info offline. I’ve been using that to keep track of my own health.

Very sad to see it all go. Thanks for the heads up.

A member of one of my teams shared this article and I'm sharing it on my teams.

The brief version: On August 17, 2021, we will be closing down SparkPeople along with its features and mobile apps.
