That's really sad about the 19 year-old but I am sure it is not uncommon. I think that was nice for Nancy Shapiro (assuming she was Jewish, but with a name like Shapiro--how could she not be?). Lots of Jews, however, don't care about how their remains are dealt with, and it doesn't make them any less Jewish. (My mother, for instance, has willed her body to science). The right thing was done for Nancy, however. Her faith was respected.

What I don't want is to die alone. It doesn't matter to me if I am unconscious. I know if things proceed in the order of nature, my parents will pass before I do and i have no children, siblings, or spouse so I am afraid of that. I am not afraid of death in it's appropriate time frame, just early death and dying alone.

With the help of the cemetery database, I now know a bit more about my dad's father who passed away when my dad was a young boy. No one of my dad's generation knew the name of my dad's grandfather who had remained in Europe. And we finally have confirmation that my dad's family (maternal and paternal) are from Vilna.

I am aware. A cousin was very active with Jewish genealogy. After 62 years she was able to trace the movements of my mother's younger brother during the Holocaust. When the Bad Arolsen archives opened, she offered people help with tracking down their long-lost relatives. She was one of 75 genealogists and archivists invited by the Germans to visit the site.

Sadly, my uncle died literally days before the liberation. He had just turned 33 years old. Now we had concrete proof of all his movements. But my mother never believed to the contrary that her two brothers survived, even though both were seen right before the war's end. At best, we now have one official yahrzeit.

JewishGen.org is a huge database of information for searching Jewish genealogy. They accept new data towards more complete records. The Family Finder (JGFF) is a compilation of surnames and towns. The Communities Database contains information about 6,000 Jewish communities in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. The Holocaust Database has more than 2.75 million entries regarding Holocaust victims and survivors, from many sources. And there are many more databases including a Worldwide Burial Registry with more than three million entries from cemeteries and burial records worldwide, from 7,500 cemeteries in 128 countries.

I haven't taken the time to figure out how to utilize the resources yet. Some are fairly intuitive but others require actually reading instructions. Request permission for more complete access. It's a partially free website but a few lists are fully accessed after a donation.

Very sad. But I do appreciate the effort.

Tangential to this, the local Costco was built on the grounds of what appears to be an old Jewish cemetery, apparently long since abandoned. There is a plaque in the parking lot noting its history, and that the 100-plus bodies were moved to another location. Apparently, there were no next of kin.

I was saddened thinking of all those unclaimed bodies and knowing each has a story. Many no longer have a name or like the 19 year old, only a first name for identification. I am glad to come across one of the the rare news story about good people doing a good thing.

Wow, how sad, but also how wonderful that the people at that funeral home care enough to take care of such situations.

This article caught my attention and I thought I'd share. It is sad (about unclaimed dead bodies) but it is also a confirmation about the goodness of humanity.
