I think some people think the gun all by itself will protect them. SO moronic.

And then there are the others who think a zombie apocalypse is possible. Or that the government might come and take over their world, literally. There are some people who really think they need to be prepared for all out war. Look at all the preppers, people who have shelters in their homes or elsewhere, ready for surviving the nuclear holocaust or something.

So they want deadly weapons, to kill the zombies, or to fight off the marauding armies of Russians, or something like that.

Yes, they can. But to what purpose?

Look at the idiot who mistook his daughter for an intruder and shot through the door and killed her.

because they CAN.

maybe missing some manlihood? who the heck knows.

those that say they would have no problem killing someone seem so sure and i have so much doubt. so i dont want them "protecting me". i suspect most would have those guns taken away instead.

I guess that makes sense, Phebe, but I would love to hear why those gun-toting nuts think it's necessary to have a semi-automatic other than for situations like you mentioned.

Just like seat belts are mandatory, we need more safety guards on guns. Things like, oh, banning semi-automatic weapons for personal use. Fewer bullets per clip. Just some basic precautions to guard human life.

Nu, only person I know who has a reason to carry a semi-automatic lives outside Ketchikan, Alaska, and hikes in the woods. She said she needs one in case she encounters a bear that charges at her. I'd give her a pass. Everyone else, no.

And if we're considering regulation, can we have sign-offs by mental health professionals that the individual poses no threat to him/herself or to others on a yearly basis?

Yeah, that will pass.

I have a question for the NRA: What is the "need" for semi-automatic weaponry?

Regulate them like cars and drivers. Licenses. Registrations. Training. Renewals. Inspections. Government involvement in transactions. Paper trails.

Today's gray lady has an opinion piece suggesting just this.

"... Gun enthusiasts often protest: Cars kill about as many people as guns, and we donít ban them! No, but automobiles are actually a model for the public health approach Iím suggesting.

We donít ban cars, but we work hard to regulate them Ė and limit access to them Ė so as to reduce the death toll they cause. This has been spectacularly successful, reducing the death rate per 100 million miles driven by 95 percent since 1921...."
