Congratulations to Daughter and Proud Parents and Sibling.

Great interview article. Yes to your mentoring and yes, a job interview is that two-way street, hence, the clue being "inter-." I love that old line, BBJ "caught up with..."

Mark Eisner recently realized that after 21 years leading his environmental consulting firm Advanced Land and Water LLC, he had put his employees in a vulnerable position.

He had no exit strategy, leaving his growing team subject to his age and future health.

"They also were limited in what they could learn, by what I could teach them either directly or through client service opportunities," Eisner, founder of Advanced Land and Water, said.

The 57-year-old Baltimore County native recently found a solution to his problem when engineering, planning and landscape architecture firm Barton & Loguidice acquired his Eldersburg company. He wasn't necessarily looking to sell, but said he found a fit in the Pennsylvania company.

Eisner was able to retain all nine of his employees, and said Barton & Loguidice provided a strong "cultural fit."

The acquisition closed on Feb. 22, and now Eisner as assumed the role of vice president at Barton & Loguidice's environmental practice area, and branch manager of the Baltimore-area office.

The Baltimore Business Journal caught up with Eisner to talk more about the acquisition, his new role, his advice for young people in the industry and ó as an avid Orioles fan ó what he thinks of the team this season.

You have been approached by many potential buyers over the years. Why did Barton & Loguidice catch your attention? What was different was when Barton & Loguidice approached me and demonstrated a strong awareness of who and what we were. At that point, I couldnít help but seriously consider the opportunity. It wasnít enough for a company to just be interested in my experience and client list. I have always been committed to staff retention and professional growth opportunities for the staff above all else. Barton & Loguidice expressed a desire to retain Advanced Land and Water staff right from the outset.

What will your role be in the new company? In Baltimore I manage and direct Advanced Land and Water, drawing on my 33 years of hydrogeologic and environmental consulting. I design and execute projects, manage and mentor staff and assure that client requirements are met expertly and cost-effectively. Many of our projects relate to water resources management, evaluation and protection.

Barton & Loguidice is a market leader in engineering, environmental and facilities-related work within the New York geographic range of its historic professional practice. I intend to help broaden that footprint into the mid-Atlantic region.

You said you mentor staff, does that advice extend outside the office? I participate actively in mentoring programs sponsored by professional societies and trade groups, and am actively involved in professional mentorship of college-aged and junior level professionals in this industry. I regularly present on the doís and doníts of applying, interviewing and securing oneís first professional position as an environmental scientist. While I never received this type of mentorship, I feel itís important for professional and vocational satisfaction and success in this industry.

What advice do you have for a young person in your industry? Realize that a job interview is a two-way street, and that the interviewer expects you to want to learn as much about the firm and position as they want to learn about you. Prepare for the interview by learning about the company, position and industry as much as possible, and show your preparation through astute questions. Never ask about compensation or fringe benefits; use the ďDo you have any questions?Ē as an opportunity to demonstrate superlative knowledge, insight and drive.

How are you feeling about the Orioles's this season after last year's record losing season? Iíve become accustomed to heartbreak and needing to have patience. The present team is fun to watch. They are scrappy and manufacture runs. However, I expect 2019 to conclude somewhere around 55 wins and 107 losses. Rebuilding is a slow process.

So, as for the Orioles, ask me what my hopes are for the 2024 or 2025 season. By the time those years come, I expect that no present Orioles still will be on the team. That is the nature of rebuilding.

Mark Eisner

Title: Vice president

Company: Advanced Land and Water LLC

Age: 57

Fun fact: Mark is a lifelong Orioles fan and attended all three of the team's world championship winning games in 1966, 1970 and 1983. He saw the O's play on the road in Philadelphia during the '83 Word Series because he did not win tickets to see them play in Baltimore's old Memorial Stadium. The next year he became a season ticket holder to ensure he would never miss a home World Series game again. "Here it is 2019, and we have not been to the World Series once in that 35-year period," he said. "That joke still is on me!"

You often copy articles into a post, but not this time! Same thing here - can't access without turning off adblock, which I don't do.
