I have to give the benefit of the doubt, as I did not see the news in its entirety. But it almost seemed to be a veiled remark about how this guy can be doing so well.

A final gift for Trebek?

There was something online in the past couple of days about the 1950s scandals, probably in the AOL lineup of spacekillers. I, too, didn't spot a clear reason for the subject, but suppose James' wild play and success brought the old days to mind.

That's a nice response from Jennings. I wasn't watching TV during his reign, but would have appreciated him. James is from his own planet anyway.

I don't think so. I think if they tried that now (he's eleven completed games, as of last night), there would be rioting in the streets.

Interestingly, the other night, I caught the tail end of a news broadcast about the quiz show scandals of the 1950s. I wondered why they dredged that up now (missed the opening part of the segment).

I realized last night that I was going to miss tonight's show because of the seder. I hope it will be amply covered online.

EDIT: Tweet from Ken Jennings after last night's show:

"This is absolutely insane. I've always wanted to see someone try Jeopardy! wagering this way who had the skills to back it up."

Is there a limit to how much he can win before they start over with three new contestants? There used to be a limit of winning five games, then moving off the show to return for the championships. Not sure what the new "rules" might be?

The teaser was that this season is in the can. Does that mean James is done, or he will continue in the fall?

It was a thrilling game and I love that the two women laughed when Final Jeopardy came along.

Atticus Finch came to mind immediately when I saw the category. Scout and Jem were my runners-up, probably because I referred to her in conversation today.

Wow!!!!! Just wow!!!! Tonight's performance was like none other. The man bet SIXTY THOUSAND DOLLARS for Final Jropardy. He is incredibly lightning quick.

I always knew that you had to accumulate enough in regular Jeopardy to make it a shut-out. But watching him tonight carefully, I realize the methodology. He doesn't dicker with the lower numbers. He's very confident in his ability that he starts with the top numbers first and works his way across that way, successively. Phenomenal.

No, she definitely looked "not there". I picked up on that, too. She probably felt humiliated, and on national television, too. I do not think, under the circumstances, that that is a stretch to assume that.

At one point she looked not-there to me, but I didn't read into it. You may be reading her correctly, Nu, but speculation is often a sport. There's no way to know her psyche, facial expressions, responses to situations or the rest of her humanness.

To my eye she looked shell-shocked (or am I reading into that?). I was wondering if at some point she just gave up. She just didn't look like she wanted to play anymore.

You know, I was thinking about that too, last night. Whether those contestants would be really annoyed that they were on the show with THAT guy and never had a shot, or if they would look at is as though they were there and part of something extraordinary.

People on the show are there to win, but understand that, most often, their opponents start with the same prospects. Spiegy, your comment about steamrolling makes me wonder about players' attitude toward losing a game. If I were on the show, would I prefer to be steamrolled by a master or by a mere mortal such as I? Easy to say, as I only watch from home, but I think I'd like the former. I'd like to be smiling with admiration for the "master" when I'm sent on my way with one or two thousand dollars.

(Shouldn't the consolation prize in such a case be quite a bit greater? After all, the poor, dear losers, set up to be run over by a truck, never had a chance. They're on the show much as film extras fill the battlefields and the Colosseum.)

I also felt bad for her. She really was just totally shut out of the game completely. At least the other man held his own which would’ve been good enough under normal circumstances, but not with James playing.

We just started watching this guy this week and wow - is he amazing. He's so calm and quick and matter of fact with the answers. Plus of course, the way he bets/accumulates his money is a lesson to all future players, right? I felt bad for the woman contestant last night who couldn't get a handle on anything. He just steamrolled over everyone.

He is an interesting man. Not only because he broke his old one day monetary record, but in articles I have been reading about him it seems that everybody else has been playing this game all wrong all along. Being a professional gambler, my guess is he's done a statistical analysis of probability and game theory in general and analyzed in great detail how to maximize his wins. He made a comment in one of the articles that people hesitate to really utilize the Daily Doubles appropriately. His theory is to put all the chips on the table at those times because he said that in the majority of cases the person answers the question correctly. Maybe I'm wrong because I haven't watched every single moment since he started, but he has only lost one time when he put all his chips on the table and got the answer wrong. But it was early in the game, and it was only that one time and he certainly recovered from that momentary loss.

During this evening's game he seemed to know everything on Earth. His broad knowledge of course has been evident from the start, but, somehow, tonight it sizzled for me. I was emotional and almost teary at the end.

Whenever he plays his last game, I hope it will be as notable as his wins. He should either fail by $1 below the winner's score or 'achieve' complete, near-loss. It would be a shame for him to go out without some form of splendor. Yes, I was emotional.

How can you forget? James would be disappointed.

He won, natch. Seven days, now over $400K.

This must be so thrilling for Trebek, and sure to take his mind off of other things. Stupendous way to end a career. And James is great to comply.

Agreed, and what a magnificent ride he will have had.

When he lost everything during yesterday's game, he took it in stride. I'll wager that two things explain it. He's a gambler, one. He knows what losing is about, two.

I can't recall who or what led to the conversation, but someone told me eons ago that, if you're going to gamble, never bet more than you're willing or can afford to lose. Having put nothing in beyond the price of a hotel room (if he drove from LV to LA), he can bet !00% in daily doubles.

And just as I feared, James made an "all or nothing" bet last night, and lost. Lucky it was early enough. But he ended up with less than $30K total for his 22-minutes of effort. I actually calculated the other night, when he made his third appearance: All that money for a little over an hour's worth of "work".

Nu, it's years of grant writing for both my after-school art program as well as the School Improvement Plan (part of the idiotic No Child Left Behind funding). LOTS of saying the mundane in such a way that it sounds as if we're achieving major things! Though with the art program, we pretty much were.

Belongs here (my bad):

Wow! Just wow! The way this guy plays is so thrilling to watch. But I did not get Alex's reference to his being off $4,000+ from the one-day record. I am guessing that was his from the other day.

I cannot believe he went into Final Jeopardy with over $70,000.

fikklefame.com/final-jeopardy-4-9-19

His cheeky bets, I am sure, will cause his demise, but until then....Nice retirement gift for Trebek to have such a thrilling player.

****************************************

EDIT: I stumbled on the reference that Alex made earlier about the previous one-day record. It was set by Roger Craig in 2010. James just leapfrogged over that tonight.

I hope you are paid well.

How does one frame that on a resume?

Good luck to him!!!

And if he's a sports gambler, I hope he has money on UVa tonight for the final college basketball championship tournament thing. (Which is why we aren't watching anything else. Not that I'm watching - my job is to make sure Richard doesn't doze off. LOL!)

We're watching. He maybe on for awhile.

The very first show said that he was a professional sports gambler.

I only caught snippets tonight, but that young man is breaking all kinds of one-day performances, outdoing himself repeatedly.

A joy to behold.

Did you see him two minutes ago? Did you see that? He whizzed through to $50,000+ total for the game. I can hardly wait for his appearance in the Tournament when his turn comes.

Happy to say that I got Final Jeopardy -- the Munchkins -- so I should ace the online test tomorrow. Of course I will.

-----------------

P.S. I just tried to find his age, but didn't. What I did see is that he's a professional sports gambler; somehow I've been hearing him introduced on Jeopardy as a sports broadcaster or announcer. Hm.
