Laurie, ceramics in general dry out skin - but after a single time working in clay, it likely either exfoliated any dryness, or you absorbed a lot of the good minerals in the clay. (I always feel happier after working in clay - I've always felt like I was absorbing calcium and stuff.)

And here I crawl back, tail between my legs and head hanging in shame. The test just ended and I did most poorly, far worse than I have on past tests. Some of the questions, perhaps five or six, were totally out of my playground; I couldn't even come up with a guess in time. I blanked on a few that I know. There are plenty of other misses on my scorecard. I do wish they'd make the test available after the fact.

Oh, I meant to put this in the "Young Mr. Holzhauer" topic. So be it.

Wow! Just wow! The way this guy plays is so thrilling to watch. But I did not get Alex's reference to his being off $4,000+ from the one-day record. I am guessing that was his from the other day.

I cannot believe he went into Final Jeopardy with over $70,000.

His cheeky bets, I am sure, will cause his demise, but until then....Nice retirement gift for Trebek to have such a thrilling player.

I seem to recall that, after washing up that night, my hands felt especially soft. Is that correct?

Yes, a very small dish. Mine held a tiny clay "pebble." Keep in mind that that was only a quick stop one night at the studio so that my friend could check on something she'd been working on. I left the pebble holder and its contents behind, unfired, unwanted.

My guess is that a pebble holder is a small vessel.

I really love working in porcelain. Really soft, so it's like working with creamy butter. Not as soft, but softer than stoneware. Plus it's so white, the glazes really glow!

No, I didn't get that far into the videos, but it sounds worth a revisit. I haven't touched clay since college, but remember the amazing feel. Do you know that I made a pebble holder that day? I'll bet you don't know what a pebble holder is. Neither did I until I invented it.

Brilliant research, Phebe. I watched a couple of the Ford videos that followed the link. These people love their work because they are making art with clay.

For the past couple of months, I've been experiencing a few coincidences and fortuitous events and thoughts daily, so much so that it's almost as eerie as it is enjoyable. The latest touches on this car topic. I woke this morning with the realization that my synthroid dose may have been going to waste for a couple of months because of morning reflux. I decided to email my endocrinologist who happens to be an enthusiast and [small] collector of model cars of beautiful design. He sees them as works of art and we've talked about it during a couple of my appts. Then I logged in here to find Phebe's latest finds. I've copied the posts and links into Word to take to my doctor next time I see him in case his interest extends to reading about car design.

Hmmmm - clay modelling for autos may still be continuing! And there is now an internal armature used - otherwise, one designer says, the clay model would weigh 10 tons!

I don't think the clay models were ever fired, the measurements were taken to set up the machines to make the components. What I found fascinating was that they were solid clay - there wasn't an interior armature. That's why they were so heavy. And probably why they were never fired - it would take forever to dry out internally, and any moisture inside would expand during a firing and break (or blow up) the whole thing. I believe the clay was usually added to a pug mill with some water and remixed to a malleable texture, and used to make another model.

I have seen commercials showing clay prototypes. Never occurred to me it could be upwards of a half ton. Thanks for the info, Phebe.

Wow that scoreboard was amazing!!!

So, an interesting bit of trivia - for years and years, vehicle models or mock ups pre-production were made out of clay. Designers found it was the easiest way to build a 3-D version of the car, life size, prior to setting all the parameters for making the parts out of metal. I saw one car in this phase - probably took half a ton of clay, but it was the easiest way to make all of those curves.

That is something to behold. Interesting that Mr. Grade's living also is sports-related.

Isn't that Karmann-Ghia sweet? I remember when many cars were attractive with curves that made you want to touch. So many were works of art. When the designs became angled-squared-prickly-et al., they lost their appeal. I was told that when computers were enlisted by designers, that was the end -- they're (the computers) are not good with contour and curves. It makes sense.

Here is a still shot of the final numbers. It was a complete rout:

-4-4-19/

Trebek even commented that the champion's score going into the final would have normally been enough (about 18K), but the new guy just dominated the whole game.

It never occurred to me to check youtube when I miss a notable game.

I'm back.

There are several click-upons for it, but each yields this: "Video unavailable

Maybe the opportunity will come up in a day or so. I'll try again.

I figured there was some number in one of the other columns that might have been their personal record for runs, or their batting average, or something along that line.

I know, we usually think of pinch hitter or relief pitcher - but yes, there are also pinch runners.

I think I got five of them or maybe four. The only reason I know the one naming two TV shows is because of hearing the silly first name of the first character many times in the promos. As Athena is my witness, I've never watched either show. The baseball question is beyond my guessing ability.

Here's an example of one of my better days where I got 5 correct. Oh, and when you see the questions they don't tell you the categories. Some are obvious. Some aren't.

Q1. GAMES/SPORT - In a baseball box score, the abbreviation "pr" (or "PR") next to a player's name stands for what?

Q2. GEOGRAPHY - A town in southern Zambia, an island in the center of Victoria Falls, a number of rapids in the Congo River between Matadi and Kinshasa, and a mountain range on the northeast border of Lake Malawi in southern Tanzania are all named after what Scottish physician and missionary?

Q3. POP MUSIC - Name any of the three bands of which David Crosby, Stephen Stills, or Graham Nash were members of most immediately prior to their eponymous debut release as a trio in 1969.

Q4. WORLD HIST - A pivotal 1916 insurrection in Dublin, where well over 1,000 Irish nationalists took up arms against British rule, and which led to the proclamation of an Irish Republic (and eventually, an independent Irish state), began on what holiday—after which the event is commonly named?

Q5. ART - Parian, Pentelic, and Carrara (Luna) are different types of what specific artistic material? Famous works created in this material (and which include this material in their name) are named after Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin.

Q6. TELEVISION - Trista Rehn, Ali Fedotowsky, Andi Dorfman, and Becca Kufrin are all women who have appeared on what two reality television series? Note, two answers are required.

That clarifies it. I couldn't guess whether your opponent recognized your name or thought it is other than a Jewish name.

Cheating is the worst. I suppose forfeiting would be irritating to the others.

Might we try a game here one day? It sounds interesting and challenging.

Maybe definitive answers about E.C. and you will come from scholarly research some day. It's too bad that your own efforts coincided with his Nobel Prize. People who receive such recognition are bombarded from all angles, which doesn't help those who are making contact for respectable reasons.

Was try not avoid going into too much detail in order to get to the gist of my story. You give the higher points to the question that you think your opponent will have the toughest time answering. And conversely, the lowest points to what should be the easiest. So, it's very easy to answer more questions correctly and still lose because of poorly applied defense. Even though there are people in my league way smarter, I'm holding my own on good defense. You can only join the league via recommendation and forfeiting a match or cheating is heavily frowned upon.

We are 90% certain he is a relative, I just have not been able to draw a direct line as of yet. We reached out to him years ago, but were victims of poor timing as it was just around when he won the Nobel Prize. He was reclusive as it was and that didn't help. But his ancestry and the fact that Elias is a common name in my family tree, makes us think it's most likely.

Your game is confusing for me, just as the recent, super-duper Jeopardy team battle was. I watched it as I would watch any ordinary game.

Would you mind leading a demo of how Learned League works? Does assigning a high score mean that you think the opponent will or will not get the answer? Since you bring up the Purim question and your opponent knowing your name, do you have a connection to Elias C?

Speaking of Jeopardy, I play in a trivia league called Learned League. There are a number of former Jeopardy champions who play. What makes it more challenging is not only do you need to know the answers, you play defense against your opponent assigning points to each of 6 questions, 3-2-2-1-1-0 on how well you think they would know the answer. All you know about your opponent is their last name, gender, school and location. The other day, I got a question about Purim and my opponent assigned me the highest score, going by my last name. I won the day.

Are you saying that my posts that don't appear to me, hence, I think they never took, are visible to you? That I'm on your screen in double vision?

It's been a couple of months since SP articles appear to me with no click-upons for saving -- none of that row of three or four functions across the top of the screen.

I'm melting; all my beautiful wickedness, melting.

I see all the comings and goings of our silliness, to let you know.

Something is wrong with my SP connection. I replied to Mark's last note earlier, but mine isn't here. It happened in this thread earlier in the day. Will check with SP techies.
-------

The souvenir use rings a bell. I also recall that large pieces were going to be displayed or used somehow in various public ways? Like any number of people, I'd have liked a bit for myself, but at least I had acorns from beneath the tree.

Am I correct in recalling that one or two of the tree's 'adult children' were 20 or 40 feet away and farther back from the road?

True that. Much of the wood was made into souvenirs, the sale of which benefited natural resources programs.

Yes, but, if its time had come, I'm glad that nature and not human disregard took it.

The demise of the Wye Oak was nothing short of a regional arboreal tragedy.

It is said that you, Mark, are quite fetching in aqua.

Speaking of which, did you know the Wye Oak? It comes to mind because the band Wye Oak will be performing here. Having heard about the tree some time before, I took a detour in the late 90s while driving back up from Norfolk. I picked up some acorns from the ground and kept them for some years. For all I know, they're still around here somewhere. That was a tree. When I stumbled upon the item of its demise some years later, I was sad.

You, Mark, are looking pretty cute.

The injustice comes in comparing the pics a friend took the other day with the earlier one. You've aged with no mercy from the planets, Mark. Time is a town without pity.

Phebe, it's only about half an hour. You won't be on the show until after your Italian-village stint winds up.

No, not signing up. I have enough going on without adding something new.

Will anyone be signing up? I just did and was surprised by the new requirement of a photo. Having pictures taken is not one of my favorite things, but since I do less well in the online test than I do shouting answers at the TV screen, I won't have to think about it.
