It's a blessing to be tax-exempt, IMHO. I think Orange Doofus or maybe even my own state (gasp!) may be working to change this, but currently I am unaware of any changes to my status. I should probably keep more tabs on that. But it only causes me increased anxiety. I know a few people who would probably let me know about a serious change because it would affect my relationship to them.

Yes - I told them $1,000 a week as long as they promised to defeat her. Least I can do.

Who would have thought that we Democrats would be anything but united against Trump? Yet, here we are. A pane of shattered glass.

I'm still staring at my paystub. Big chunks out for federal taxes, state taxes, medical insurance and whatnot - and the biggest chunk of all - my biweekly contribution to the Minnesota GOP so they run someone solid against Omar!

Thing is, for retirees living on pensions and Social Security, they didn't change what was taken out for taxes. But on the 1040 form, they took away the extra exemption for being over age 65 - so that has totally screwed up taxes for us. It's a mess.

So His Orange Majesty and his minions purposefully deceived the electorate to achieve a tax break for ultra-wealthy golfing buddies, GOP donors and to get an uptick in popularity polls? You don't say!

I'm glad to hear you say tax hit. the refund amount is irrelevant and people dont get that. its the total amount you are liable for that matters. the new law made the amount they take out each pay period go down so stupid people thought they were making more - nope they were just taking more home. and that $15-40 bucks a pay didnt change anything in most peoples lives. but it meant since they were taking it home, it wasnt getting paid to the government and now they have to pay that up. and .... and...the total liability went up. so double whammy. those that are complaining their refund went down dont understand - thats good - the object is to know you owe say $15,100 to the govt for the year and pay $15,100 during payroll - no more no less. when they pay $20,000 and think its great they got a big refund, they dont see that they loaned the gove $4,900 at no interest. so its the total liability - or hit - that counts. so last year they owed $15,100 and over paid. this year they owed say $18,000 and paid $13,000. but its the 18000 figure they should be mad at, not the loss of the 4,900 refund. sorry. you all get this but it annoyes me.

This happened to my sister as well.

The only thing that tax reform did was line the pockets of the top 1% donors to the GOP. For everyone else it was a shell game or worse.

Of course you're not sitting by the phone, so to speak, Phebe. This especially is the last thing to obsess about. The application is in and now to forget about it until there's a reason to think about it. But it's just such an amusing proposition that I'm anticipating. It's fine -- I'm not giving up anything for it.

Mark will always be boss. Mark, what about a second career? I see you in this role:

Mark, I know you were paying taxes and such - did you just never see them itemized and then deducted before? Or did you pay these things, and then whatever was left that month was your salary? It really is most confusing!

Laurie, I'm excited about the possibility - but I'm also not allowing myself to get convinced that I'll get one of the four positions. Because I might not. And I hate being disappointed. So I'm trying to not be too excited. The possibility is amazing, however, if it comes through!

For those who didn't read about this, AirBnB and a community are hiring four people to live in a small town in southern Italy, to be trained in a variety of traditional Italian skills (pasta making!) and then teach those skills to visitors. It would mean a paid trip to live/work in southern Italy for the summer. So I put in an application - and now I wait.

Latest weirdness: first paycheck as an employee. Taxes out Payroll deductions. 401K. I never saw any of this stuff. Wow does it all add to a big hit - and that's before I donate to whomever runs against Rep. Omar in Minnesota.

Mark, I'd expect it to feel weird. If you had signed the papers and moved on, it might be less eerie than it is staying on.

Phebe, they will contact you. If my guesses at some things you included in the application are correct, they'd be fools not to include you in the next round. And aren't they hiring four people for the gig? Shoot, I'm kicking myself for not paying attentionto the deadline? Wouldn't it have been something?

Week two of bizarre land ends today. Most major clients are on board with the transition.

A couple of unexpected wrinkles have developed - but its gone well overall. Staff seems qualifiedly happy. And it does not matter if I am happy. I get to go home at the end of the day and just not think about it.

It's still weird.

No doubt oodles of people applied, but that doesn't mean you won't be a shoo-in. I read so little about it that I wasn't at all clear on what it's about.

Just found it at another source. Such an odd project, but fun-sounding. Four people will take part! I'm kicking myself for not applying.

Wonderful news, I hope... Mazel Tov!

My sister used to work for a company that did groundwater testing and such, but I think it was more of a subsidiary of one of the major oil companies guilty of such contamination... she now works elsewhere in Georgia, plotting utility lines...or some such.

She girds herself with strength, And strengthens her arms.

He was born in Romania, or what is now Romania. Who knows what it was called in 1910 or 1920 or something like that. He didn't have the "th" sound, nor apparently the "er" or "ir" sound. They came out like "oy" all the time.

Phebe, you're tossing a new wrench into my accent, et al., scholarship. What language(s) did your grands speak? Did those languages have a "th" sound? When someone can't pronounce "th" because it's been unknown to them, their vowels also seem to be thrown off.

There is the possibility, of course, that I'm wrong in thinking that the toity-toid evolved from the terty-terd, which, when vocalized properly, clearly is an Irish accent. Back to the drawing board for me.

Mark, if we're in Morocco (or even Malta) by then, we can meet up! (I told Richard he needs to be able to walk a full mile nonstop before I'll feel like he's ready to travel again, so it might be a while.)

Laurie, my grandfather who came over from Romania always said "toity toid street" - and he sang "happy boysday." I always thought the NYC accents that had that sort of pronunciation came more from the immigrants of Eastern European origin than anything else. But I've also never studied it - just my impression from having grown up with all of the grandparent generation coming from Eastern Europe.

Yes, Regional Accents for $800, Ecoalex.

Seriously, about the stereotypical, Boston area accent that Mark typed a few boxes back: Is what I was told decades ago true? That the accent is based in the Irish accent brought over long ago?

Several years ago I figured out/then confirmed that two variations on one of the stereotypical NY (Brooklyn) accents -- 'toidy toid and toid' and 'terty terd and terd; (the spelling is slightly misleading -- sorry) -- is a remnant of an Irish accent that landed here. I do a pretty good verbal imitation of the latter.

Not snobbery. Just an observation. New Yorkers usually act like they have been there before. Boston Red Sox fans, not so overly much.

Mark, you know my husband. He's used one of the standing desks for a few years and really likes it.

I am really intrigued by the standing up desk. I recently heard somebody quip that sitting is the new smoking. Something to avoid at least in excess.

You might want to requisition a new desk in case you decide to make a quick getaway.

I don't understand such things, so that kind of move would initially frighten me (not being in total control!). However you seem to be a business savvy person and know what's what!

A few of you know, but about ten days ago now my wife and I signed papers to sell my business (the one I started over 20 years ago out of the basement, with nothing but a laptop) to a substantially larger firm. They acquired the assets, the risks, employed all of our people generously and, well, after 20+ years I'm back to being an Indian rather than a Chief.

My company and office has become a branch office. I'm its manager.

Ostensibly I have a 5-year employment contract, renewable at mutual agreement of the parties. That said, I can walk away and retire at any time. Completely. If I want. At age 57 (or 62 at the end of the 5-year, or anywhere in between).

And who saw that coming, ever? Certainly not me. Right now its weirder and weird. But now you know. Time to work harder on my belly...
