I just laugh when sharon won’t go out cause there’s an inch. She grew up and learned to drive there not here. But I admit As I get older I go Out less in snow. More of meh I hate The cold than anything else.

Don't kid yourself, Sherry. There are times when the DC area has gotten hit worse than us. Thank goodness my daughter learned to drive in the snow up here.

Lol photog - your columbia friends dont drive when there's 3 inches. but they did get almost a foot - we were in disney (looking for and not finding your daughter but didnt look hard, wrong parks wrong days. would like to meet her one time!).
hated trump on apprentice and before.
as to the "developer not in it for the money:", when i worked facilities contracts for a Fort, the attached contracting office was construction. He (boss) had a list of construction contractors: 3 columns, investigated, indicted, jailed. but thank goodness it was not a huge list. but i still think more are more honest than the trump org and pay their subs and workers.
being away during his speeches is the best.
sprawly comments, sorry.

LOL - I remember being forced to write haiku in school, and it drove me crazy!!!!! I hated counting out the syllables, although I did appreciate the simple terse phrasing.

That's how I feel about Trump - I don't want to dwell on him and his actions, so I use very spare phrasing to write about him.

Besides, he doesn't understand big words.

Phebe, on first reading, your last message somehow has a flavor of haiku. It holds up on second reading. I took two seconds to try to name how it works, but it needs more than that. I'll enjoy it along with the mystery.

Between the shutdown and the forecast east coast blizzard (if you have not heard, you will), the Orange Monster may disrupt upcoming travel plans for Thing One (headed to the frozen tundra of Western Mass) and the two of us (headed way south where its warm).

Yup, got it. My sleep sometimes is delayed because of the trump thing. Probably more often than I realize, it's on my mind, disturbing my sanity, causing cussing and near-screaming upon waking. The creature disturbs us, yet it sleeps comfortably. What's wrong with this picture?

I won't even wave. I will breathe a deep sigh of relief that this American nightmare is finally over, and we can begin the work of repairing relations with our allies.

And then I will welcome hugging my pillow once more for a restful night's sleep.

"I still hate what the Republicans did by foisting this monstrous human being (and I use the term lightly) on the American people."

Unable to recall the item in news of the past two days, Trump himself said or was quoted as saying at some time that Americans are gullible. Barnum is best known for the sentiment.

Nu, we weren't understanding each other on the Wollman example. It was nice to have a refurbished skating rink as quickly as it was achieved, but I give no kudos. Had he done it as a gift and left it at that, great. Had he done it as a gift, but done his expected boasting and bragging, the 'gift' is tainted and I'd rather not have it -- not that it was a personal gift to me. I recall only that he was boastful in announcing that the rink would be repaired quickly, not that it was another of his business interests. He doesn't "give." In that 1992-ish interview with Charlie Rose, when Trump announced to the world and for the outside daughter to hear, he hadn't wanted to marry her mother (the second wife), he spoke of charities and that they mismanaged money, so he'd stopped attending the big, annual events (which may have ben once or twice) or donating, not to mention being on the board of a non-profit to add his management expertise. Sure, some non-profits are less financially efficient than others, but...but... Soon after he married the current wife, they did attend a banquet, but I'll venture a guess that either he was displaying her or she nagged to be "in society." As far as I know, it was a one-time thing for them.

The most I'll ever be able to give him is a barely-perceptible wave when he goes away.

HEALTHYPERI, I just had to giggle as to your commentary about Trump making his crazy talk. Did you not know that Mexico is paying for the wall, but by means of the new treaty?

I am completely with you about taking him in small doses. Real glad his "speech" was not longer than ten minutes. I could not have stomached more.

Mark, I saw that, too. It will boil down to what is iron-clad provable.

And I still concur with Cher and others who said where was this wall legislation when there was a Republican-dominated Congress, two years prior? Why the last week in December before the House becomes "Democrat-heavy"?

I still hate what the Republicans did by foisting this monstrous human being (and I use the term lightly) on the American people.

Working my way through Woodward's "Fear" right now. And that will have to be the last of the political books for me. If I continue I will never again sleep at night.

The news item that broke this weekend that the FBI has an open investigation of whether he is being controlled by the Russians is not partisan or trivial. That will prove to be a big thing.

Years ago he said “Mexico will pay for the wall, we’re not paying for it.” Recently he was asked about the quote and he said, “They are paying, I never said monetarily.” Then he went on in all the ways they are paying. He is a crazy maker. For sanity purposes I can only watch him in small doses.

He doesn’t care about now good people not getting pay checks. He only cares about his own pocket book. Having a president that truly doesn’t care even a little about people who are not rich and famous is the saddest thing our country can experience.

Yes, the rink is nicely populated as ever, but I give no credit to Trump. If he didn't see profit following the initial cash outlay, he wouldn't have done anything.

The episode also bring Maimonides to mind. Trump broke most, if not all, the Reb's rules of charity.

Even then. Nothing changes. It was all about Trump.

I certainly recall that he stepped in to repair Wollman Skating Rink (for those who don't know, it's at the southern end of The Park and one of two ice rinks there). The city had long been known and remains known for hideous repair records regardless of what is being repaired of -- over schedule and heartbreaking numbers over budget (it may be unfair, for example, to say without knowing the whys, but I do wonder why the Municipal Building was under scaffolding for a great many years.

It's not that Trump stepped in to fix up a much-used rink because he was a great believer in philanthropy and public service; that is well known. He did it primarily to twit then-mayor Ed Koch. The pair had shared animosity for ages. The second reason is that his company, Trump Organization, has been operator of the rink ever since. I just found this 2015 article in Forbes Magazine: The contract runs for another year and a half. Trump has profited.

Ya know, I used to think he was terrific. He fixed the skating rink in Central Park, which other contractors could not repair in years of working on it. He did it in six months. At the time I did not know about all the rest of his "stuff". In his office, prominently displayed, accidentally captured in a news piece on him, was a citation in Hebrew from some Jewish group. That seemed to be another plus.

Now, sadly, I know better.

One of this week's "The New Yorker Radio Hour" features is about how "The Apprentice" game show made Trump a national name. He'd been known for years before, but maybe more on the local, NY scene. Interesting, infuriating listening.

Someone much smarter than me, with whom I have broken bread for three decades, thinks it all ends slightly differently:

1. One of the continuing resolution passes and is signed into law, once Trump signals to McConnell that he'll sign because he's (allegedly) getting the wall by dictatorial decree.

2. Government reopens.

3. The courts stop wall consgtruction, and the Orange Emperor stands disrobed.

We'll see.

Meanwhile, there are jerks destroying the national parks intentionally, chopping down protected tress in Joshua Tree National Park to create "roads" so they can go camping. They came equipped with bolt cutters to open the locked gates. The level some people sink to in their selfishness is just stupefying sometimes. I hope they catch them, and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.

Not unless Mueller finishes earlier.

I see everything you see, exactly the same way, with the exception of the government reopening. Nonsequitur of following the lawsuits. For that, the Dems will have to be more creative, so Trump can "save face" with his base. Which is pretty much what he told Schumer.

I predict this end game:

1. The declaration of a national emergency and the attempt to redirect Army Corps of Engineers funds to wall construction;

2. Lawsuits.

3. Courts stop wall construction.

4. Government reopens.

5. Trump tells his base that he did everything he could. Some stupid Democrat judge...

Meanwhile, people have been distracted from Mueller for another 60 days or so.

Even Fox News reports that McAllen, Texas does not believe a border wall is necessary there. And this from a town that engages in regular legal traffic from folks who live in Reynosa, Mexico who cross the border daily to do work (legally) on the Texas side.

Trump will always do what he thinks makes him look good or gain popularity - nothing more, nothing less.

Part of the concern with flying is that the usual federal inspectors who check aircraft are not working. Not sure if the air traffic controllers are slowing down. And then there's TSA, working but not paid.

Yeah, not the best time to be flying.

Mark, where in the south will you be? I'll be in Parkland, FL - just north of Ft Lauderdale. Weekend of Jan 24 to 29. (Making it a long weekend for this wedding. I want to go on a trip into the Everglades since I'll be right next door!)

Thanks, Sandy. The fault was partially mine: I went to remove the "s" in the httpS, because SP cannot handle it, but on the iPad there is no backspace once you paste the URL. Probably why it came back with a 404 message.

As to the article, it's incredibly sad. She'll get another position, for, as she says, she was "holding out" for "something meaningful". The folks in public housing (not quite sure I fully understand the connection) do not have that luxury.

To borrow Trump's favorite expression: "Sad. So sad."

He's leaning more and more towards declaring a national emergency, so he can save face. He has to know that it will be challenged in the courts. But why should he care? He'll keep his precious base.

Thing One flies back to school in 9 days.

Her parents fly south a few days after that.

I have zero expectation of a resolution before either trip.

I'm getting concerned about flying in two weeks. What's up with air traffic controllers? And there are many places where the TSA people are calling in sick because they aren't being paid, but still have to work.

Dead link, Sandy. But I probably read it when it was posted. I had read that people who had housing assistance would be affected.

Meanwhile, I just read that the White House water bill went unpaid (can you imagine?).

I feel so bad for all the people and services affected by this juggernaut.

Meanwhile, I have no idea where this "partial" wall is in McAllen, which I know well. Technically, McAllen is not directly on the border (about six miles away), but Hidalgo is, and faces Reynosa, Mexico. Nice of the president to go visit.

I worry that this shutdown will go on as he promised for more weeks and months. He has nothing to lose by continuing on this path, and everything to gain, as he shores up momentum.

I submit it's more than 800,000 losers. Nobody accounts for those people whose livelihood is dependent on the government being open, who don't directly work for the government. The businesses in and around DC and the various national parks. We have friends whose daughter gives architectural tours around DC. Haven't spoken with them recently, but I'll bet her business is affected. Are contractors included in that 800,000? This article from USA Today gives a personal insight into how people are affected by the shutdown.

Spiegy, I see your point, but in fairness to the Dems they were not privvy in advance to the president's remarks and that was clearly by design. The playing field was not a level one and a ten minute "speech" does not give one enough time to prepare to answer anything said.

I don't think Trump "won" that round. He clearly sniffed his way through and his discomfort not being able to feed off an adoring crowd was palpable.

No winners. Only 800,000 losers being held hostage by a man who is losing his grip on the reins of his presidency each and every day. May it end soon.

Not a Trump fan at all - full stop - but I was supremely unimpressed by Schumer and Pelosi's rebuttal afterwards. I thought they did themselves a disservice by doing it. They both were stiff as hell and added nothing new so I think it just made them look bad. I think a well-written op ed piece would have been better. Or just a better statement at a different time, with more liveliness. As awkward and weird as Trump is when he's trying to be "dignified" and presidential, I think he won the optics game. And the optics seem to be what counts now, not substance. I think he IS still winning and it's horrifying.

Given the state of the times, I declare that there are no rules to the Trump drinking game, and we just drink!

I love how Cher even got into the game: She asked the president via Twitter, how is it that he had two full years with a cooperating Congress, he did not think to have his wall built then when there would not be any opposition?

This is precisely what I do not understand as well. What are we missing?

I got home too late to see these game rules. But in plenty of time to watch the show. Oy! I wish I could have gone to the "Bringing New LIfe to Old Jewelry" class with you, Laurie.

emoticon kinda, sorta a prune?!?! Where is the shovel emoticon?

And Mark, I've found two teams "special for you" because I know how much you want to add new groups to your page. I put "liberal democrats" in the search bar on the hunt for a team page. There are three listed, yup, three.

The biggest group is Liberal Atheist Hippies with 1310 members but it doesn't seem like a perfect match for you. They would probably be fun except it is an inactive group with the most recent post last November and most activity from 2016-2017.

Liberal Atheist Hippies
There are over 70 teams for Christians alone, so we've created a nontheist oasis for the hippie progressives who reject right-wing ideology and who think that religion is bunk.

Proud Americans Keeping Hope Alive
Proud Americans: Liberals, Independents, Progressives, Democrats. All who supported Barack Obama's presidency are welcome here! It's up to us to keep HOPE alive. Our day is coming again!
Members: 830

Proud Blue Liberals
Just a friendly little group from the other side of the political tracks. No mudslinging or nastiness. All are welcome.

I searched teams for "democrats". Got one hit and I already listed it with the group of three.

The Vietnam War: A perspective. Where should the talks be held? Who should be invited? What should the shape of the table be? Somehow the boys dying meanwhile did not factor into the equation:

Oh, yes, indeed. The seating and table-shape planning stage went on for a few months, didn't it?

Now that the weasel Giuliani is cutting Mueller's access to Trump, things on the investigation front will heat up. It amuses me that Trump seems not to recognize what I see in Giuliani: early signs of dementia. Since becoming Trump's personal lawyer, he has said one bizarre, loony thing after another. Wait, to be accurate, I'm surprised that no one has told Trump that Weasel is losing it; Trump wouldn't get it on his own. It could be that Giuliani's bizarreness serves Trump?

Now they are saying that Trump walking out of the meeting with the Dems was a "publicity stunt".

And sadly those 800,000 government workers will be the ones paying for all this.

Reminds me of the Paris peace talks convened to end the Vietnam War. What was the discussion? The shape of the talks table. Rectangular implied there would be a perceived "head" of the table. Boys were dying, and they were talking about the construct of the table. They finally settled on round, so there would not be a "head of the table."

Incredibly tragic.

It is the only one listed on SP if you search for "Republicans".

Citing Soros (and another person agreed) as the source of the border problems, to my mind, is a veiled anti-Semitic comment. I dare anyone to tell me otherwise. No other explanation for it, sadly.

I skipped the festivities for "Bringing New LIfe to Old Jewelry" class and got settled in at home to turn the TV on at 9:18, commentaries and responses already in full swing. Having seen only a clip of up to 2 minutes, I'll now find the full video. What's a day without crazed screaming? Mine, that is.

One of his juvenile speech habits is using "very." Another apparent habit is repetition of phrases -- "It's a big thing. A very big thing" -- which is a sign of neurological impairment. I believe this is correct.

We agree about the "tell" and commented on it in real times. He sure seems awkward giving a speech in a quiet room without the backdrop of a crowd chanting "lock her up" or "Yay Putin" or whatever they chant.

I just checked. I DID recall it correctly: NPR said that there were a total of SIX terrorists who attempted to cross from the southern border. Sarah Sanders, shout out to you: NOT 4,000. Glad we have organizations thst report the facts accurately (what a concept!):

Trump refused to give an advance copy of his speech, so that the TV stations, and other organizations live streaming the speech, could fact check in advance. Anyone surprised?

And how many times in his barely ten minute speech did you hear him deeply inhale? It seemed to be his "tell" when he was about to tell more lies.

Man has no skills for this. This was pointed out by the commentators: Why this is the first address from the Oval Office. It is clearly not his element. He only did it because he had no choice. He boxed himself in quite well. And he is desperately looking for a way out.

I was wondering how long it would be before someone would start this thread or a variant thereof.

I took a trip over to the "Conservatives / Republicans" team yesterday, that Eco found a while back. They solved the border crisis already. They know who is behind it. Ready? George Soros. The level, nadir actually, of ignorance is not to be believed.

All this keeps reminding me of Sandra Bullock's movie, "Our Brand Is Chaos." Trump could be using that playbook. He knows if he does not get his wall / barrier / fence in some form, he is finished.

Let's see if he plays "Let's Make A Deal" and resigns as some think he will, in the upcoming days.

Oh, and one smart Democrat knows exactly what is immediately needed on our southern border (exactly what I realized years ago): Computer upgrade to track expired visas of people still living here. THAT, is the EASIEST way to stay in the US. And, according to NPR tonight, the number of terrorists caught on the Texas border last year was six (or perhaps they said eight, but no more than that). So much for 4,000, Sarah. And on the northern border with Canada about four times that.

Tonight the fireworks should be innerestin'. And the Democrat rebuttal.

Warm up the television now.

This is Sparkpeople. Water of course. Here goes.

President Trump speaks to the country tonight about the border crisis. And since that crisis doesn’t exist—it’s a fiction invented by Trump and spread by conservative media—the speech is certain to consist solely of overt propaganda and lies.

Take a Drink if Trump - Uses the following buzzwords: Danger, Threat, Caravan, Gangs

Uses the following adjectives - Amazing, Tremendous, Incredible, Best, Beautiful, Out of Control, Weak, Terrible

Blames Democrats for anything. Doesn’t matter if it’s the government shutdown, weak borders, Russian collusion or rigged elections.

Take two if he calls out Nancy Pelosi or Chuck Schumer by name.

Ad-libs. Trump supporters love his ability to speak off-script. And since Trump doesn’t write (or likely read) any of his own speeches, he loves adding a little flair of his own at the end of sentences. Usually he’ll just repeat the last few words, but occasionally Trump will add a “very bad” or “can’t have it” to let you know the speech is HIS.

Take Two Drinks if Trump - Uses the following buzzwords: MS-13, Bad Hombres, Fake News, Low Energy

Inappropriately praises the wall - Trump’s already described the proposed border wall as “beautiful” and “artistically designed.” But odds are he’s cooked up some extra catchy new phrases to play up its aesthetics. Sleek and sturdy? Tall and titanic? Robust and racially pure? .

Mentions Any Cabinet Member(s) by Name - Trump’s a cretin, sure, but he’s hardly the mastermind of his own despotic immigration policy. Stephen Miller and Kirstjen Nielsen are best bets here.

Take three if he mentions someone he already fired, like Steve Bannon, John Kelly or James Mattis.

Finish Your Drink if Trump - Has a Dental or hair malfunction. Not likely, but we can’t rule it out. Surely his handlers will have extra Fixodent and hair spray on standby.

Illegally Declares a National Emergency to Deal With Nonexistent Border Security Problems. We are in the end times. Drink up
