Did you know that in the original Star Trek TV series, many of the exotic handheld pieces of equipment (McCoy's medical scanners are the best example) really were exotic salt and pepper shakers? You can look it up.

We're toying with a NYC trip this spring upcoming. That new Donna Summer musical has my name written on it. I'm of the age - I worshipped that voice / music.

Canadian Spark Friends. I love my Canadian Spark Friends. A small handful of people I've met out here I would call friends in real life. A dozen-ish of you all of course (take a bow, Nu, Laurie, Gail) but also Mary Ann, Watermellen and over in Britain, Josephine (who never tires of my Josie and the Pussycats references).

Oh now I think I need a cat menorah!!!

This is the menorah I travel with - the top slides off to make Shabbat candlesticks, but we don't usually do that.

But this is our favorite menorah in our boxes - a friend gave it to us as a wedding present:

I love them all, even the one that could be a placemat in a diner along an Interstate. You know, the placemats that ask children, "What's wrong with this picture?"

Two Canadian friends, both former SP denizens, are not Jewish, but appreciate Hanukkah and love cats. I shall save all five menorah pictures to send on to them.

Thank you, Gail and Mark. You've made my heart happy.

I absolutely remember that chicken sandwich scene!

I often order sandwiches "deconstructed" - which of course confuses the wait staff, and I have to explain that I want all the fillings on the side. Especially with a hummus sandwich - I'd rather dip the vegs and the bread and eat it that way. Otherwise everything slides around and falls out. So I just dip.

Boss, our hotel put up their Christmas decorations yesterday - small trees outside, a lit up tree inside, and some odd Santa & Mrs Claus and snow people plush things. So I got out our handy dandy silver menorah, on a blue plate, with the blue candles. On the dresser in our room, right next to the TV. (The window ledge is wide enough for the menorah, but not the plate to catch the drips.)

Oh, and the plate will be used for the yahrzeit candles later in the month - lovely lavender scented candles in glasses from TJ Maxx. My mother liked purple, and I love the scent of lavender. And my dad wouldn't care. So my side of the family would be happy (in whatever sense or form the deceased may take).

On the topic of red and green and Chanukah and such....

We are prepping once again for our annual holiday dinner party for the Company. We are busting at the seams and anticipate nearly 30 souls at our home. Ala our largest Thanksgivings of the past, we'll be in full Beat-to-Quarters and Clear-for-Action mode, as our kitchen once again converts to a banquet hall.

And as for the colors, our tablecloths, linens and whatnot - will be blue and white!!!

Because its our company and we can.

***

PS - No Christmas decorations around the office. None. But the doorposts have mezzuzeem. Again, because we can.

I grew up using the blue box and that's what I have this year. I remember when the candles were multicolor but less vivid than the current box ... the pale citrus colors (no green). We would guess which candle would burn out fastest and which would last longest. There were a few years with all orange candles and that sapped the fun out of lighting because half the fun was deciding on the order of the colors: alternating? sequence of three? all one color? And of course, the color of the shamash decision.

emoticon Wouldn't it be funny to go that restaurant and order one sandwich to divide among the group because we all won't touch parts of that unusual treat. I just want a latke. Someone else can have the chicken. I'd eat the applesauce and sour cream but not with the latke. Where is Jack Nicholson???!!!

In essence, a potato sandwich. Innerestin'. If the restaurant does make a serviceable or better latke, you can order some alone, hold the chicken, hold the bread.

Remember me? I'm the one who will eat the applesauce and sour cream, but not the latke.

I enjoy mixing up the traditional with, well, untraditional. Though red and green mixed candles don't say Chanukah to me.

I asked the guys at our fave bagel place if there was some café or restaurant that served latkes. They recommended a place that serves a sandwich with chicken on a latke with applesauce - apparently between two slices of bread.

Now THAT is weird!

If you mean that you'd like SP to offer click-upon for quoting, well... You can quote by copying and pasting. There's no prohibition.

My supermarket has blue-boxed candles, but they include deep blue, purple, bright red. What I yearn for are the citrus colors. Someone here has got to know of which I speak. Just say so, please, whomever you are.

Sandy's happy place seems to be a secret happy place.

I wish that SP allowed quoting in replies. I was referring to the candles that Phoebe posted from Amazon. The ones in the blue box.

And that was the pun. Kaskeset means scales, as in fish scales. But since they are a musical group, well.... Maybe not a pun so much as a play on words.

Sandy, do you mean you used 'my' candles? Not with blue and purple mixed in? I saw that when searching. And, friend, where is your happy place?

P.S. I found that kaskeset translates as fish scales, but am not sure of the pun. Fish scales/musical scales, i.e., scales/scales? I hope the pun you have in mind is better than the puny pun that occurs to me.

Six13 came out of an Acapella group at SUNY Binghamton known as Kaskeset (if any of you know Hebrew, you might get the pun). One of the members of that group, and a founding member of Six13, was a member of my synagogue. HIs father was my dad's neurologist. I have a number of Kaskeset's songs in my music collection.

We used those candles too, but now we use an oil lamp. We'll be celebrating the first few days of Chanukah in my happy place. Flying out today emoticon

The box looked familiar when I saw it during the search last night, but I'm not talking about white candles. Your new ones are fun, but they don't say Hanukkah to me. None of them do. In the past I've written that I've stayed with "Shabbos" and many other words I grew up with and that still connect me with my ancestors. It's the same for the candles.

Sylph, these are the ones I grew up using:

www.amazon.com/Menora-White-Chanukah

andles-Box/dp/B006CSRWM8?th=1

They come in white, or the multi-colored packs. (And on the back, the three blessings over the candles. Which my father had to read as he chanted every year.)

These are the fun candles I bought this year:

Good, except for the visual of disembodied heads shot in high angle.

Phebe, the candles at 1:20 are not the ones I was talking about. I've never before seen these and, no, not my taste. I just looked at some sites that sell candles, but "mine" are not to be seen. Does anyone remember or still see those that are a collection of citrus colors? They're lightish in color come in colors that make me think of tangerines, lemons, limes, pineapple, etc. They are not strong colors. I used to see them in the nearby supermarket and will take a look again.

For all the centuries with no formal system of transliteration for Chinese -- and the one finally instituted is wacky in many respects and generally ignored by common folk -- we're still in a century when there is none for Hebrew. It's a free-for-all. I tried to please everyone with the title here.

I like Chanukah spelled that way, because it is the closest English approximation to the Hebrew.

The broader question has arisen, how Chanukah properly is spelled in the Queen's English. I'm partial to the letter C, but lately I think I see the letter H more.

The "s" issue came up some time ago, now I remember, but I misremembered that the "s" is what save it.

Works now. Cute.

All you had to do with the URL is remove the "S" in httpS. Then it works. Why SP is not up to speed on that, I have no idea.

emoticon For the effort.

It just worked for me, but here's the rest of it.

Oh, the https shows in the "add a link" box, but SP isn't letting it in here. Try again (it's worked for me a few times) or copy/paste into your address bar.

You need to correct the URL so the link works.
