No, she never was enrolled in my class.

I was just impressed that she knew enough about the Fauvists to recognize art that could fit into that style.

Don't know what classes she was placed in, but such are most schools.

Thank you, Gwyn. And thank you, Gail and Phebe. I do try to paint or draw what's in front of me, but didn't recognize fully that it's what I'm aiming for.

Is there more to the story about the new 8th grader? Was she enrolled in your class? How did she develop?

Gail, that's an amazing mural - just wonderful!!!

Laurie, you really have come a long way!!! You are starting to paint what you SEE, not what you know. For example, the part of the tomato you left white - that's the reflected light - you SEE that, rather than knowing that it's there. So this is a big step in being able to paint realistically - forget what you know about objects, and focus on what you actually SEE. (And I like your kitchen - it has a lovely whimsical quality to it. Perfect for a scene from childhood.)

I have to tell you about an experience with the Fauvists, though - I was hanging some of my students' self-portraits in the front office at school (done in sort of an Andy Warhol pop style - two contrasting colors for the face, a third color for the background) - and a new 8th grade student came through with her counselor, on the way to register for classes. She looked around at the paintings with faces in blue and pink, or red and yellow, or green and orange - and she said, "Wow, is this an exhibit of Fauvist art?" I looked down from the chair I was standing on, smiled, and said, "It does look like the Fauvists, doesn't it? With the unrealistic bright colors and all. But this is actually a project on pop art, more in the style of Andy Warhol." She looked around a bit more and nodded. I looked at her counselor and said, "Please make sure she gets signed up for art class, okay?"

Yeah, we need more people like that!

You're so smart! I don't know that I'd think of shadow-tracking on my own.

The young woman and I had at least half an hour to talk before my friend arrived and discovered much overlap in interests and general life experiences. Not wanting to be too American, I let plenty of time go by before asking about her work. The conversation led to the question. After getting the idea what I'm serious about learning paint, she brought up the gift and started to hand me her card. Feeling protective of her, I exclaimed, "Wait, I'm a stranger in the park." She replied that she could tell I'm a nice person. We enjoyed each other enough that I wouldn't be surprised if we maintain contact and get together now and then.

A few years ago I met an older woman (now 85) while waiting for a bus. We got into conversation during an unusually long wait and then unusually slow ride. Maybe I"ll give the details another time, but, for now, we've stayed in touch and get together once in a while. We live only a few blocks apart.

You never can tell. Some 'friendships' last for the duration of whatever throws people together and others go beyond.

suggestion ... don't wait until next time. Shadows are everywhere so check for the source of light in various environments: inside and outside, and time of day.

It's nice to know there is still that much kindness and generosity in the world. It could be a short play: two strangers are sitting on neighboring park benches in a shady spot and then they start to chat ...

Thank you, Gail, you make me feel good.

The tomatoes were on the table in front of me. The teacher brought a box of them and I broke the three from the vine. You've given me an idea: Next time, I'll look up at the light source to see why the shadows are as they are.

I expect to be getting a good number of tubes of professional-quality watercolors by the end of the week, a hand-me-down from a woman I met at dance performance on Friday. She may have said something about brushes, too. We'd both arrived early and were sitting on neighboring benches in the shade (performance in a park) to wait for our respective friends. After a while we began to talk. It turns out that she's an artist with primary income as a textile designer. I told her about my classes and the upcoming watercolor class in N.C. She offered her supplies, as, between her job and being mother to a four-year old, she expects to have no time to paint for quite a while. Her card is in hand and I'm about to call her to make arrangements. (The person I was waiting for is from Spark.)

Wow! Laurie, your progress is very obvious. You've learned a lot in a short amount of time. I think you have grasped a much better understanding of how to use techniques. Your tomato shadow is a great example because it is based on awareness of light and shade and how to reproduce it rather than trying to paint a precise image of a shadow because your head knows there should be a shadow in the painting. So cool to see your skills developing!

Good going, Gwyn, I don't keep a journal -- at least not for more than one day every 12 years -- but I have no doubt that it's good discipline and practice for those who want to write. It's probably time for you to identify as a writer!

Gail, your Portuguese find is great fun. Imagine coming across something like that in person.

I have a few new things to share. Be back as soon as I plug in the ipod.

--------------------

I'm back.

From this month's drawing class. It wasn't clear from the start, but the teacher is presenting drawing as using color value, only graphite. In the first session, we worked on the bare tree, bottom up, and added layer upon layer to get it dark. Then, the shaded background. Then, erasing to achieve snow on the tree branches. Next, run a tissue over the whole thing lightly. Last, erase dots here and there to suggest falling snowflakes. The assignment for this week is to draw a simple chair in a simple composition and use the color-value technique. So far, the best part of mine is a vase with flowers on a table.

Watercolor tomatoes done last week at the Salmagundi Club painting class. I'm not sure that they look all that much like tomatoes, but the teacher said I did a good job. Good, for a newcomer, so that's good.

Do you know that I'm taking a puppetry class this month? This is the backdrop for my show-in-progress. It's about an incident in my childhood, hence, a kitchen that looks as though it was painted by a child's hand -- or my adult Fauve hand. The truth is that I'd forgotten the refrigerator and sink, hence, they are in the middle of the room. By the time I recalled that stoves are standard equipment, it was too late.

That's right again. But, now, back to me.

I painted tomatoes with my watercolors in the Salmagundi Club class this morning. I don't see that they particularly look like tomatoes, but the teacher and others who are far more experienced than I said I did a good job.

In this evening's drawing class (all about graphite and color value), I (we all) did a three-value drawing of a bare tree with snow.

I'll take pics of both and post them. I'm an art fool, all over the place.

Sounds like great fun taking a watercolor class!!

For now, I may try taking a coloring book to color next time I'm sitting on my rear end during the chemo process. To use the loo, I have to un-hitch up my IV stand from the AC power and it automatically switches to DC battery backup. Then I take "Matilda" with me to the loo ("Waltzing Matilda...", as I call the IV stand with it's roller feet that don't necessarily go in a straight line. It's a bit like a 5 wheeled grocery cart, with all 5 wheels determined to go their own way.). I might take Matilda on some longer labs around the center, not just to the loo. Wish they had an exercise bike I could set on and pedal while Matilda was holding my bags for me... So anyway, coloring, yea...

She girds herself with strength, And strengthens her arms.

Yeah, well who knows that the future holds.

The Sparky Sisterhood does not seem exactly in line to write the $2M check for the company to facilitate said retirement, and until that happens its all hypothetical anyway. Besides, Susan is intent on being an active, involved, hands-on grandmother when that day comes. May it not be too soon.

I receive e-mail updates and FB updates on Peace Corps Liberia. A typical day includes a volunteer updating their blog, checking email, and working on the computer with students.

Yeah, I lived in a mud hut, had an outhouse out back, and used kerosene lamps. Even Liberia is getting reliable electricity and wifi, apparently!!!

Mark, Peace Corps has what I believe they call Rapid Response Volunteers - some positions aren't the full two years, but might be just six months. Wouldn't you like to teach math or science or geology in a developing country somewhere in the world???? Worth thinking about, anyway. (And usually older volunteers are placed in more developed settings, with electricity versus just the mud brick hut I lived in. Married couples are always placed together.)

Laurie, your class sounds wonderful, and I'm excited for you!!!!! I want to hear all about it after you do your stint there!

I'm slightly familiar with SCORE and think it's a good fit for you. The other areas are great. I think I've know that you have an interest in photography and certainly that you're a sailor. What sorts of things do you think you'd like to teach?

For some years, the colleges of City University of New York have offered free auditing of academic classes (e.g., not studio art, alas) when regular student enrollment isn't at capacity. It's a fabulous opportunity which I have yet to look into. What I'm doing with classes now limits my time, but I would take English courses that I never took and classes in disciplines that I mostly avoided, sciences included.

Intriguing to me: SCORE (Service Corps for Retired Executives), photography, teaching, sailing
Susan may answer for herself as she threatens to become more active here, but photography, classes, cooking anyway.

So cool Laurie!

Susan and I recently had what doubtlessly was the first of what will be many discussions about potential hobbies and such, in retirement. No, we are not retired. Yes, it now seems potentially close enough to at least think about.

Update on taking class at John C. Campbell Folk School, Brasstown, NC

Class title: "Beautiful Watercolor Landscapes & Still Lifes." Sept. 23-29, 2018
Instructor: Ken Hobson

“Immerse yourself in nature as we focus on painting the elements of a landscape: trees, mountains, dramatic skies, birds and more. References will be provided, or bring your own. Weather permitting, we'll spend a morning painting outdoors. Some studio time will be spent painting still-life arrangements, including loose, colorful florals. Expect many demos and one-on-one guidance from the instructor in a fun, encouraging, content-rich class for intermediate watercolorists.”

It's that word "intermediate" that concerned me. The school gave me the teacher’s phone number. After hearing my experience and goals and that I’m taking whatever classes I can now, he thinks I'll do well. He reiterated that he does demos for students and gives them the attention they need. He sounded nice. I'm excited and nervous about the entire undertaking, but believe that it will be excellent. I’ll take my few pieces from TCC classes; he said he’d be glad to see them and give a critique and suggestions for what I might have done differently, et al.
