Consider donating blood. Covid-19 kept lots of donors from continuing and, now, July, 2021, many areas of the country are short of supplies. Contact the blood bank in your area or a nearby hospital/medical center. If you're in the NYC/NJ area, we have the long-established New York Blood Center, phone 800-688-0900.

Coronary arteries. The arteries that feed the heart. No offense, there ain't no such animal as an "arterial artery".

The references to Nu I won't even get into now. Way too exhausted.

Dvora, at what time do you usually have breakfast? And your exercise time, again, if you stick to some time schedule?

Since Ecoage has already gotten back to the original topic, I'll tell you what I do (if anyone cares anymore). I don't eat first. I find it makes me nauseous. I drink tons during the workout and eat breakfast (or something at least) before or after my shower depending on how hungry I am. This has worked really well for me, and I get through my workouts (even when I was doing Insanity) just fine without any fuel.

Thankfully, yes. I had a stent placed after an angioplasty indicated a 90% blocked of the Right Arterial (and finding out I only had two arterial arteries, where most people have three). 16 years later, I am 110 pound slighter and focusing on better daily habits.

It came to me after I asked you to identify the abbreviation. It explains why you think of the date as a birthday of sorts. It also sounds as though you've been alright since?

I had a stent placed in June, 1998, and another a year and a half later. In both cases it was angina.

His launch date? That's a horse of a different color. You wrote:

"However, i was born one day before Yuri Gagarin..."

Why would anyone think you weren't referring to his birth date? Everyone, I want a show of hands.

The puzzle, however, has been solved. You are an April 11 babe, unless we have to calculate the time difference 'twixt EDT and whichever USSR time zone. Is that next up your sleeve? You think I'm a rocket scientist when I hardly qualify as arithmetician.

Yes, I saw that earlier, but I was asking about your exact day and month. I missed something? I must look up Yuri's dob? Alright, I'm up for a treasure hunt. (I don't 'do' signs or have one -- another of my happy exemptions.)

Stop the presses. You say you're a few days shy of 53 and born a day before Yuri. He was born March 9 and died March 27. Where are the few days of which you speak? My poor head.

There was a time I thought a do-over would be wonderful. Most people think so. I came to the conclusion years ago, however, that there are no do-overs with a different ending. If I'd known "then what I know now," I'd be someone else. We'd do the do-over to the same effect, so be careful what you wish for. No one wants a second round of anything that brings wistful wishes for do-overs.

My birthday is the 29th of April. No year: I'm exempt from a year and, anyway, can't count that high. Or should I say "low" in relation to the year of the crime? What matters most, though, is that I accept gifts with a gracious smile and "Thank you so much."

Mark, will you reveal your date now or loose it upon us at the moment? And I know you're smiling when you breathe "NUMD97" and "stupidity" and "indiscretion" on the same page.

I'm glad I was in HS during the "hippie" years - I even convinced a few friends, our teachers, and the principal that the few of us should go to an anti-war and anti-bomb rally (at the park between WA state and BC, Canada) - and that it was a learning experience. We actually wrote up our thoughts and got credit in our civics class.

1970-76 were great years to be an iconoclast!

I'm counting on a time-space continuum fracture. I want a high school and college redo, without the tremendous shyness and self-confidence problems that wrecked those years. Do-over, please.

Yes, that was '54 not 54. That little mark before the number 5 was not a spec of dirt on your monitor. It is a shorthand way of indicating the year (the year being 1954 and should not be confused with 2054, since that would indicate some kind of fracture in the time/space continuum.)

And your photos make you look WAY younger than 53! At least 10 years younger, if not more! I figured we were different generations - you're actually older than my youngest brother!!!

It's not only non-Jews not getting Jewish humor. I was in Israel in the summer of 1970 and went to see Goodbye, Columbus in the theater. The audience was mostly quiet throughout the movie until it came to the wedding scene. Then they broke out hysterically laughing. If you've ever seen the movie, you would understand. Israelis were not used to such lavish and ungapotchka weddings.

Just how young do you think I am? I drove myself to the premiere of Star Wars. I waited in line for gas, and could only buy it on even numbered days one summer.

Try going to a Woody Allen movie in Minneapolis - NO ONE LAUGHS!!!! I couldn't figure it out, I was the only one laughing!

Of course, I encountered the same phenomenon when at a Lenny Bruce documentary in Seattle.

I had the opportunity to visit the Mid-West sometime in the 1990s or early 2000s. I forgot the context, but it was explained that Seinfeld was just not all that popular a show there. It certain did not have the rabid following it garnered on the coasts.

Apparently, many of the gags were New Yorker insider humor that Middle America either did not get or just did not find all that terribly humorous.

I enjoyed Seinfeld to a point, but only a fraction as much as Susan did.

For the difference between NY-hatred and antisemitism I refer you to the first episode of The West Wing when Josh and Toby are meeting with some Christian right people who Josh supposedly insulted:

MARY MARSH
You people... that New York sense of humor, it always --

CALDWELL
Mary, there's absolutely no need ~~

MARY MARSH
Please, Reverend, they think it's smart -- smart talk -- but nobody else does.

JOSH
I'm actually from Connecticut.

TOBY
Yeah, but she meant Jewish„

A stunned silence. Everyone stares at Toby„

TOBY
When she said 'You people and your New York sense of humor,' she was talking about me and you, Josh.

Down here in the South, people recognize New York accents and form biases against their purveyors. Those with thick accents often fulfill many of the negative stereotypes, with remarkable consistency. The distinction between NY-hatred and antisemitism can be mighty slender. I reserve my passionate NY-hatred (and it is passionate) for ball-fields.

Photog, Brooklyn-Battery, but to the best of my recollection, really just The Tunnel. I'll be generous and skip your second sentence. Knave.

Perhaps you thought I am a midwesterner because of my accent? I've been asked by New Yorkers if I'm from the midwest, Maine and the south. When I'm "out there," people know exactly where I'm from.

Mark, you wicked fellow. I saw "Lon Gisland" in connection with your love of maps (we discovered that mutual interest, but I recall that yours covers road and all other maps) and thought "Who?" You had me googling, expecting to find the name of a prodigious cartographer. Had you spelled Lawn Guyland, I'd have gotten it.

I collected road maps as a kid. I also memorized them. It was fun to beat my Lon Gisland cousins at my knowledge of their geography.

I humbly stand corrected. Very rare that a Brooklynite can best a Queens man. So is it the Battery Tunnel or the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel?

My dear man, I was bred, born and reared in Bensonhurst. It is in southern Breukelen. Perhaps you've heard of it? Only Queensers refer to the 59th Street Bridge as "Queensborough. The cheeses stand alone and you show yourself to be one of 'em. Knave.

"Malcolm Wilson." Leave the Tappan Zee alone. Alright, it's to be demolished and replaced, but leave the name alone. It's history.

How about the Malcolm Wilson bridge? What did he ever do to deserve a bridge named after him? And being a native New Yorker, I can tell you we used 59th Street and Queensborough interchangeably. I'm not going to let any misplaced Midwesterner emoticon tell me otherwise

But I digress.

Who calls it the "Robert F. Kennedy Bridge?" It's the "Triboro," as the 59th Street Bridge will always be referred to thusly, not as the "Edward I. Koch." And don't tell me it is or ever was the "Queensborough." And it's the Midtown Tunnel, not the "Queens-Midtown Tunnel."

Turf war, anyone?

Well, maybe the new names for the bridges will take effect a couple of generations hence. Pity.

Respectfully, while we do not have woods a plenty in the city, you can still be creative. One of the teams I shoot practices on Randall's Island where there are generally no available facilities. The field they were on was under the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge (formerly the Triboro Bridge) so we substituted woods for the bridge support wall. Had the park service happened by, we would have been in trouble, but as they say, if you've got to go, you've got to go.

That's right. There's a difference. One of the things I appreciate about this group is the absence of potty humor. I have faith that it doesn't even lurk under the surface.

That's funny about your not having had a two-door in two decades. The reason is another of the myriad clues into a person's life.

I had my stop-at-the-roadside moment in 1979 as I drove I-80 from my "home" in Cheyenne to Laramie. I think I've told you this, but if not:

Feeling the need, I pulled off at an exit leading in to a state park to use the facilities. Being a gorgeous, summer day, loads of people were going to the park for a day of fishing or whatever. The one-lane, lead-in road was backed up almost to the highway. The restrooms, 200 or 300 yards down, too far to leave the car in the road. To my left, though was a rise with lots of bushes. In desperation I stepped up, squatted and, for no reason, turned my head to the left. Right there was the interstate and no bushes between us. Red face notwithstanding, I was most happy that it was a fast-moving highway.

I can't say that in mixed company? Mishpacha company?

"Best of all, they are maintained." Maintenance, is an unnecessary extravagance.

Circa 1965, my Dad taught me something. Pull of on the shoulder, in an area where beyond the shoulder exists woods. Open the right side passenger front door. And the rear door. Face the car, standing between the open doors. Proceed.

Of course, you ladies do not possess such biological advantages. And you New York ladies do not possess woods. No, Central Park does not count. We do not have the Waldorf Astoria, but woods aplenty. And my two-door car ownership years are on 20-year hiatus.

Now aren't you sorry the group is not all women?

Some protein is smart.

All major hotel, fancy or just familiar, chain names, in urban or populous areas have bathrooms off the lobby. Best of all, they are maintained. If you're running along the service road of an Interstate, as we all do, mais oui, the chain motels have restrooms off the lobby. I've stopped at the Plaza, the Waldorf-Astoria and other familiar names many times when when I'm out and about in the course of ordinary days and get stuck.

Bathrooms as we age... hmmm.... someone on this thread has a working knowledge of the location of every public potty in the Mid-Atlantic region. Yes, aging sucks. And aging while drinking lots of water, sucks more.

If I remember correctly, we lose 4 to 8 cups of water during an hour workout. So drink up!

I know a lot of people don't drink water when out running, because of the problems with finding bathrooms. (This gets worse as you age, let me tell you. So I just planned my walks in urban areas so I'd always have a bathroom nearby.)

Now what I do, not that it's scientific or anything, is have a cup of coffee (a large one) and a banana. I also drink lots of water during the workout. My workout begins about an hour after waking up (coffee, bathroom, drive to gym, etc.). Six cups over an hour long workout is not uncommon. I have no idea whether that is good, bad or indifferent. (No attacking the coffee).

I do my strength training in bed (stretches and various leg lifts, crunches, etc - thing that you need to be lying down to accomplish) and then continue ST in the shower - wall pushups, various squats, calf raises, balance. Yeah, I know, but I get it done every day this way - and I actually have 3 workouts I rotate through, depending on the day of the week.

Then I have breakfast, which for me is usually fruit, toast, tea with milk. I don't do a big bkfst.

When I worked, I'd take a 20-40 minute walk around school to get a little cardio in - so that was definitely after bkfst. I'd have a thermos of tea with milk, so I'd drink some more when I got back to my classroom. And I'd usually have another walk after school, having a snack of fruit and low-fat cheese before the walk.

Now that we're travelling, most of my walking is throughout the day - again, after bkfst.

BUT - when I was working at a YMCA in Seattle (internship), I'd stagger to the bus and go to the Y, get in 30-60 minutes of swimming, shower, and then have bkfst. I was younger. Less knowledgeable about health and nutriition. And not on asthma meds that interfere with metabolism.

So - the long answer is that yes, you should eat something light. Then work out. Then maybe eat another something light.

You are not going to like my answer. I'm not a big breakfast eater. I generally have a banana or other fruit and a cup of coffee or two. I never work out in the morning. I have a snack around 10 (usually a fiber one bar). I try to drink a big glass of water during the late morning.

I'm not someone you wanted to hear from, but I recall two SP articles that may help you shake things up. The first is what to eat before, the second, what to eat after. There's also an article about drinking water while working out somewhere; it may be a useful adjunct.

When I'm being good and working out in the morning, I don't eat.

If I do, I have to go to the bathroom too much and I actually never eat when I just get up, unless it is a piece of fruit.

I like to follow up a morning workout with avocado, yogurt/cottage cheese, hard boiled egg. When I was eating bread, I used to just smash the avocado and egg together, mix it in some cottage cheese and pile it on a piece of bread. Now I don't eat bread, so if and when I can get my lazy butt up in the mornings again, I'll probably follow up with avocado and hard boiled egg.

Protein!

Ugh. Such a serious question! :)

I eat something that takes almost no time to prepare or eat and is light and rather bland. My usual "go to" is a spoon of natural peanut butter. Mine is Teddy unsalted but a trainer suggested salted (unless like me you need to avoid extra salt).

Here's a Sparky article that addresses your question:

If I get out of bed and do sit ups, I don't eat. If I'm working out at home within the first hour of waking up I don't eat. But when I work with my trainer and hour and a half after waking up, I eat half to a whole zone bar. I find that I need a little something or I get nauseous.

Hello. You may remember me. I used to lurk here, sometimes.

I have a question, really aimed at the subset of you who (1) seek to lose weight and not just maintain; and (2) work out in the early AM before work.

Here it is: do you eat first? If so, what do you eat and what do you not eat? Oh, and while we are at it, how do you know what you are doing is optimal?

Many thanks!
