Yes, I do think that fasting gets easier after menopause. Anyway, the nith of Av and Yom Kippur are certainly the more important ones!!

And can you believe that we are already starting the moth of ELUL? One more month until Rosh HaShana, and 40 days till Yom Kippur!!

I read a nice thought: The Hebrew letters of ELUL- alef-lamed-vav-lamed start the Hebrew phrase (each letter starts a word in the phrase) "Ani ldodi vdodi li" which can be translated as "I am to my beloved (G-d), and my beloved is to me". NOTE the first word is "ani" (me). If I want to draw close to G-d by repentance, FIRST I need to know MYSELF- my strengths, weaknesses- only with this self-awareness can I hope to correct myself. It is not enough to know my failings, but I also need to know my strengths so that I can tap into them!!

We have friends where the the wife is Saudi Arabian and of course speaks Arabaic. She is teaching her husband, a Jew who became Catholic, who just retired from a local college and had taught biblical Hebrew there. She is teaching him Arabic and yes, the languages are very similar

To answer your question: the Jewish months and their English approximation:

www.myjewishlearning.com/article/mon
th
s-of-the-jewish-year/

When I lived in MN I had a colleague who was Syrian. I asked him to recite the Arabic months. I was shocked to learn they are the same as the Jewish months, pronunciation and all.

So, perhaps, we are more alike than different?

My uncle used to joke that the minor fasts represented the same event: they attacked us, we regrouped, we broke down the walls, we stormed the city, etc. etc. and each of these sub events was a fast day.

But Tisha b'Av and Yom Kippur are two of the fasts that I do. And I do know the significance of both.

For anyone who fasted 17th of Tammuz, hope you had an easy fast. Amazing how on a fast day I don't get the same cravings as a regular day... the force of " it isn't even to be considered" mindset.

thanks. My father grew up in New York -- so as the saying goes, if you are from New York you are Jewish. even if y ou are not Jewish, you are Jewish. so my father was Jewish his whole life. My mother is from Toronto and she grew up in Jewish neighborhoods. In fact, it was not until I moved to Minnesota that I became aware of the fact that there were huge areas where areas of the US that had no Jews living there like northern Minnesota and Norhtern Wisconsin. I still hear people say to me "I never met a Jew before".

yes I saw that movie a long time ago. However, like I said, when growing up in New York and New Jersey, everyone I was surrounded by was either Catholic or Jewish so you shared an identity with lots of people. And I lived in Chicago for a while, witth a similar situation. lots of Jews in Chicago. And in Minnneapolis and St., Paul, I lived in "Jewish" neighborhoods for a while so my Jewish Identitiy was similar to others.

It's complicated. I was never embarrassed or ashamed because I didn't shoulder my Jewish identity until i was in my 30's. Did you ever see the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding? I guess it's something like that, when the little Greek Girl is so different from the dominant WASP little girls that she feels out of place with the dominant culture. But she has strong family love and support and as an adult embraces her ethnic identity. But--if you have family issues and your family is Jewish, the child can grow up to identify the issues with being Jewish and not whatever is causing the problem. I know someone like this.

I was not raised Jewish at all, despite heritage. I decided when I moved to California and was married that if we had children it was important that they be raised Jewish. I needed some spiritual grounding myself. Would not do for the fictional children not to have an example. The only Temple here in Redding, California at the time was Reform, so I went that way. I would not have been able to tolerate the restrictiveness in either practice or viewpoint of either the Orthodox or some Conservatives, so I lucked out. I even think my own congregation can be sticks in the mud, but I have to keep in mind how very small my Temple is and that it needs to survive. I am far more liberal minded than many in my congregation, the same as others. I find it interesting that many raised as Jewish (but not all) drift away and are even embarrassed or ashamed of being Jewish, while those who pursue the faith later in life are more committed. Perhaps that is true of anything.

Spiegy, your story brought tears to my eyes. Somehow, whether mysteriously or clearly, we, Jews, are all connected. Of course, I am also completely connected to the whole human race, but my attachment to things jewish feels very deep and remains mysterious to me.
I have a good basic jewish education, grand-parents were orthodox. I am not practicing, but am inspired by the spirit of the Law and the jewish lore.

BLOGGER Jonathan Davis

Jonathan Davis is head of the Raphael Recanati International School and vice president for External Relations at the Interdisciplinary Center

Full Circle: Lone Soldier/Student Then and Now
Never Forgotten

As we edge toward another Yom Hazikaron, and we remember and honor our fallen heroes, memories of my days as a lone soldier during the 70s come flooding back.

I fondly remember Captain Nehemiah Tamary, Commander of Sayeret Tzanchanim (Paratroopers Brigade), who in 1971 heard that his lone soldier, Jonathan Davis, had nowhere to live. He immediately took me under his wing and to the Ministry of Absorption in Jerusalem, where he demanded from one of the senior people on duty to find me housing. This is how I came to live in a room in a building on Stern Street in Kiryat Hayovel. Years later, that same Nehemiah Tamary, now a general promoted to head of the IDFs Central Command, was killed in a helicopter crash outside of Jerusalem.
In remembering him and his kindness, another memory comes to mind that of myself, a tired, weary soldier, coming back from the Yom Kippur War after two months of not being to that same little home that Captain Tamary had secured for me. It was an eight-story building with no elevator, with three of the floors below ground.

To paint you a picture of my living arrangements, the stairways were usually very dark and I often had to use a flashlight to make my way. This was because my neighbors were poor immigrants and many of them used to take the lightbulbs out from the hallways and into their own apartments when theirs burned out. There were even fuses missing. The building was in disarray and very badly kept, with garbage that had been thrown out of kitchen windows strewn around the grounds at the front of the building.

I did not know my neighbors at all. I was a young, lone soldier who had immigrated to Israel from California. Even aside from the fact that I was in the army most of the time, I felt a huge cultural and mental distance between those people and myself. There seemed to be nothing in the world to connect us. They were all much older, from a completely different culture (the Aliyah department traditionally sent immigrants from the FSU and especially from Georgia to there) and they spoke little to no Hebrew.

Back to this memory: I was just returning from the Yom Kippur War and as I walked up the path to my building, I noticed that my mailbox was painted red. It was the only one among all the mailboxes marked in red. Even the few letters in my mailbox were glued together by that red paint.

Of course, I was stunned, even a little angry, and I immediately turned to an elderly gentleman who usually sat at the entrance of the building sipping tea with nana (mint) leaves. He seemed to be some kind of senior leader who took care of the buildings affairs, and he wore a beautifully knit skullcap. I told him that I very rarely had anything to say concerning anything to do with the building and that I could not, for the life of me, fathom what these residents had against me personally so as to so visibly single out my mailbox.

He said that there was no reason to be upset or offended, and that my return alive and healthy may well have been because of them and their actions. He said that they knew that I was away fighting for the State of Israel and the Jewish people and so they painted my mailbox red so that the Angel of Death would skip over my threshold just like in the Passover story when our ancestors painted their doorposts red so that the Angel of Death would skip over the Jews.

It was at that moment that I realized that the blood flowing in the veins of these new immigrants, whose mentality I could not understand, was the same Jewish blood that flowed through mine. The simple fact was that we were all Jews in our Jewish homeland. In that one moment my whole attitude began to change and I actually began to establish unlikely friendships with some of those neighbors. I understood their love of their fellow Jew, their love of the Land of Israel and their love of the IDF.

This was my lesson in not judging others based on superficial things.

This is my Israel.

So I guess you have it as a "hidden team" now? I couldn't see it on your SparkPage from a "public" view... but then again, I have some teams hidden like that too. Odd that the place for hiding a team from public view is in a different location than the place to re-order the teams as seen on your SparkPage. But... that's SP for ya!

Hello all:

After spending 15 minutes re-ording my teams and not seeing SparkJews show up, I freaked out and left the group and rejoined it again.

Problem solved, and the team is now proudly on my SparkPage.

Just...in today's environment...it's a bit easy to get spooked about being "disappeared."

Whatever shall we forum about? I've been awake for several hours, after feeling a bug or spider scamper across my arm around 3 am. It is too hot upstairs...so dormancy is ending ... time to hose the wall and bed etc with peppermint lavender lemongrass etc that bugs generally don't like.

Thanks, guys! I was lucky enough to get to go to Honduras over the summer to do a free spay/neuter clinic. I had a HUGE smile under that mask. I had a blast!

Welcome back, Eddy! Nice to see your (presumably) smiling face again (albeit under the surgical mask).

Jump on the boards whenever you're ready. It's been pretty active lately.
