Where do you live?

There is a list of teachers across the country on mecda's site: mecda.org.

Amanda, I agree. I will be taking Fahtiem's workshop at ChicagoRaks. One of the reasons is that class size is LIMITED!

I've been in worshops where 100 of us are crammed into a ball room. No personal attention whatsoever.

I've had classes and workshops that were emotionally draining and gut-wrenching (like the testing days with Suhaila) and all you can do is just cry your head off, but I've also left some classes and workshops with a feeling of "What did I just spend my money on here?"

It's frustrating. I feel for you. It's especially frustrating when everybody else seems to have gotten a lot out of the class and you're the only one (or it seems that way) who didn't.

Angel, sometimes workshops are so big that you can't really HOPE for individual correction. I hate that. The best you can do in situations like that is try to get the overview of what is being taught, or if you know all the movements, how the instructor is interpreting the music.

But having buyer's remorse after an unfulfilling workshop SUCKS!!! I just had an experience sort of like that and I'm still mad, hurt, annoyed, and frustrated over it.

From a teacher's perspective:

I'd have a brief talk with them and say, "Here's where I want to be with my dancing. And, I know that you have been supportive by pushing me. But, this isn't realy working for me right now. I'd like to see a new approach. What do YOU think?"

Just so you both know where the other is coming from.

In today's economy, I think of every student as a gift. I learn just as much from them as they do from me.

I really don't think my teachers are bad just tough and I'm very competetive, hard on myself ,and sensetive. I was dissapointed that the teacher at the seminar didn't critique me at all and I didn't know if I was doing the movements right. The resaon I leave class crying is because I choose to, I expect perfection, my teachers know that and push me.

I've only had one teacher but have attended three different classes (levels and groups of women). That one teacher seems to have quite different attitudes in each class - the one I am in now doesn't gel well so the teacher seems more standoffish and can come off critical (two or three of us are pretty competitive, and one girl is overbearing just by walking in the room), but the class one level below is all about fun so the teacher is more fun-pushy with her corrections. The difference? My class "Arms up, so and so!" vs the other class "Oh now so and so don't get lazy on us!"

I could see how someone who isn't competitive in my current class would take things wrong just by the vibe, but you shouldn't leave every class in tears. But belly dance is supposed to be fun for YOU - if the teacher doesn't gel with your personality, find someone who does! Or maybe try another class where the vibe is more friendly?

I'm not a very skilled dancer, either, but I dance because it makes me happy.
Very few workshop instructors correct people simply because there are usually too many people and too little time.
If you're leaving your classes crying most of the time, then I think you're not getting as much out of them as you could be getting. Go and interview a few other teachers and spend your money where you'll feel more confident.

I agree with DENI47!

I would hope you leave your classes grinning from ear to ear and feeling exhilarated. All of my instructors (and classmates) so far have been overwhelmingly positive and supportive and inspiring my love of this dance.

Go a bit easier on yourself too. Try to become more skillful one move at a time - it's less overwhelming that way. Enjoy moving to the music, even if it's not "perfect" form!

You should not be leaving a class crying.

Can you find a teacher that is more encouraging? Not all instructors mesh with all students. I took classes with a couple before deciding on the one I liked.

Do these teachers upset everyone? My instructor was very easy going - until she realized that I loved dancing and was busting my --- to get better. Then she started being much more critical in order to make me a better dancer.

I have been dancing for about 4 years now. I'm not a very skilled dancer because I always take a hiatus durring the summer and have to re-learn eveything in the fall.I have 2 teachers and I have learned alot from them but they are both very critical of my movements, they really aren't hateful but the majority of the time I leave class crying.
This weekend I went to a seminar that was taught by a lady that had just came back for Cairo and studied under several famous insructors. I really expected to learn alot of new moves but she didn't teach anything I haven't seen before and she didn't critique anyone. I was very dissapointed. Now I am at the point that I feel if I don't leave class crying, I didn't get my moneys worth!
