I have one picky eater, but the other (and his weight shows it) will eat ANYTHING left in the open. He's sneaky, though. Never takes it while we are looking.

My name is Jeanne (pronounced Jean ee); I live in eastern Washington State.

I started feeding Taste of the Wild when my oldest dog was just a pup, when we got his sister in December we started feeding it to her too. Neither have had any problems with it. We are currently feeding the Wetlands Formula dry dog food. It has a 5 star rating at

Everyone has their own special food anyway, so each dog gets fed in his own crate. The miniature pinscher is on diet food, the Rott is on prescription urinary tract food, and Riley could have "regular" food, but I have him on lamb and rice since he has allergies and I think that helps him a little in that regard. They each go in their crates while we are at work, so we pop in each guy's specific meal for the day. If Riley's is left over when we get home and everyone has free rein of the house, it gets locked away (that Min Pin is crafty!) until his next meal.

So Julie, how do you keep your other dogs from eating the food of the one who doesn't eat?

When I had Charlie he was the finicky eater and I would have to watch so that Abby did not steal all his food. Now with Kenzie it is the reverse, I have to watch over Abby so that Kenzie does not steal her food. She will eat but it takes her forever before she starts and finishes.
Sometimes I have to start her on it by handfeeding her a few pieces. Kenzie will gobble it all up in a flash and stand guard next to Abby while she eats and cleans up after her. So fuuny cause I used to call Abby the vacuum cleaner and now it is Kenzie.

My guy doesn't seem fussy, but he'll go a day without eating anything even though his food is available to him in his bowl. Our other dogs get fed morning and night and INHALE their food. Riley could take it or leave it half the time. Sometimes he eats right away and sometimes he doesn't touch it til the same time the next day. Maybe the potty process would be more reliable if he ate more regularly! ;)

So, I have ONE that won't eat and one that eats everything...he is fat, the other too thin. Not sure how to combat that one without standing guard 24/7 over the food.

Both of my Shih Tzu's have been picky eaters. Sugar would only eat chicken that I boiled for her. Sadie will eat chicken with rice and green beans and sometimes she will eat dry dog food. They are such sweeties, except when it comes to their eating habits. Wish they would just eat dry dog food.

Jeanne, how big is that bag for $65 and how long does it last? I guess you have to compare the cost of both. The brown rice and veggies I use are not that much but beef and chicken can add up. It is great getting the dog food for free. They should still give you a discount for being an employee all these years.
I really cannot see myself stopping the cooking for them, I would feel too guilty. But I would still like to find something they like for emergencies or for when they get babysat when we go away.

Michela, since they are your babies, it is an act of love to keeping them healthy. I will soon stop working at the Veterinary College here (where I get really good dog food) and I'll have more time, so I may have to cook to keep them happy, as the food I get now (for free as an employee) will be $65 per bag when I retire. Still, price of beef keeps going up and up.

I home cook for my two furbabies, protein, either beef, chicken, and mix in some liver, brown rice and veggie mixture with a can of no sodium diced tomatoes and I add a supplement everyday. It is alot of work I make a big batch every other weekend and freeze in portions.
I would wean them into a good quality dog food again if I found one that they would love. It will be hard to do after the homecooked meals.

I think tzus often have sensitive issues. Mine do, too.

One strange think I noticed on my blonde Tzu is that if he gets injured (like a scratch or something), the fur around it grows in very dark brown. Anyone else seen this?

My guy has allergies, too, that he usually has trouble with in the spring and summer. He also has occasional seizures, but I have no idea if those are linked to allergies or not. We switched him to a lamb and rice dogfood (science diet) in the hopes that it would make a difference. It seems like it helped initially when we switched him a few years ago, but not sure it makes a difference now.

Our other two dogs have special needs diets -- the Min Pin is on lowfat and the Rottweiler is on a prescription urinary tract food. I think they would all do well on a natural diet like you are trying, but we just can't afford to spend more on food for the dogs than the family! LOL! Let us know how your dog does!

My two Shih Tzus eat much of what we eat, and/or Purina dog chow. No problems.

I am curious as what others feed their Shih-Tzu's, My Cami has severe allergies, and tired of the shots and steroids not helping. Trying a new diet of home-cooking with no wheat and gluten products. Has only been 3 days, and have to wean off commercial food. It has been a challenge with food anyway she is so picky, will not eat dry food whatsoever. Vet told me I could feed her this way just watch forbidden foods and the amounts so I can help her lose weight. Any helpful ideas?
