I have battled depression for years and yes, I do find that working on my hobbies does help me.

I love to quilt, but seldom find time to work on anything much (especially during the school year). So, I tend to knit and lately, crochet. I love the feel of the yarns flowing through my fingers and seeing that the project grows and grows. It really helps to relax me after a day where it seems like I couldn't accomplish anything. It's meditative and soothing.

Plus, on a cold day, I can snuggle under something I have made and it feels like a hug. I love homemade things.

I am not normally depressed and usually when I am I emerge myself in work. But as a hobby or to relax I do knit. I did the jewellery thing but mostly just bracelets. I ended up giving all my supplies to my daughter. But the main thing I do is read.

Does anyone else use their hobbies/talents to help elevate the depression?

Sometimes I find that if I just get myself to actually turn off my tv in the motel and make myself open up my bead box, turn on my Native music and zone...the depression most of the time will lessen in degrees of emotional pain that I seem to feel. It gets harder at times because it does seem so severe that sometimes I really have to force myself to get to the creative spirit inside of me that seems trapped. But once I do, I really start to feel better. Any thoughts??
