I am doing this to become more confident and have more energy. I want to prove to myself that I CAN do things I once never thought I would be able to accomplish. To feel good about making healthy, responsible decisions for my body.

Why am I doing this?
- Because I looked at pictures of myself from our holiday and kept getting distracted by my belly tire

- Because I was the same size as my sister who I always thought of as being fat (not nice, but true)

- because I hated that my boyfriend let slip that I bought a coat at the plus size store. (the smallest size they have, and I was just browsing while a friend shopped, but still) I don't want to shop there again.

- Because I had the very beginning of an apron belly

- Because I want to wear a strapless wedding dress and need a smaller belly to strap a corset onto in order to support my boobs

- Because I'm moving back to NZ in 6 months and want to wow my old friends.

- Because I want to be in good shape for when we want kids in a few years time so having them is easier and healthier, and the baby weight is less drastic

- to be generally fit and healthy

-AND MOST OF ALL

I want to feel as good dressed as I do naked.

I love this topic, great one!

My reasons for losing the weight are:

- reduce my risk of Diabetes (my mom was just diagnosed)

-to help with symptoms of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

-to walk my dog without losing my breath

-to reduce aches & pains in my feet & knees

-to increase my lagging self esteem

-to be able to shop in the 'skinny girl' shops

-to get approved for breast reduction surgery that i've wanted for 15 years but you need a BMI of under 26 in Nova Scotia.

-Generally, just to be happier & healthier.

I can't believe I totally missed this thread. Must not have been paying attention.

Why am I doing this? That is a loaded question.

(in no particular order)

~ to drop the weight I packed on during a bad marriage
~ to look oh so hot in a bikini again
~ to play sports like tennis and softball
~ to have a longer life (kind of expected in my family, the women usually live to be at least 90)
~ to set a good example for the little ones in my life (my niece, my gf's nieces and great-niece, and my students)
~ to have an active long life with my soulmate (we are both on this journey of weight loss together)
~ it also won't hurt to get a few looks now and then again (and be able to say.... sorry I am soooo taken)

Hugs ~ Renee

After being a member of SP for a month now, I think that my best motivation has been buddying up with other people and trying to motivate them! So for me, helping others has been my motivation to stay on track. I have to practice what I preach, so I am staying on track!

I'm doing this because I want to look and feel healthier. I want a lifestyle change for the better. I want to be comfortable enough to wear a bikini and not constantly worry about who's looking at me, but instead embrace my body. I'm doing this because with each lb that comes off, more and more people are beginning to notice and it feels good! :) I'm doing it for myself.

I am doing this because I want to feel sexy and have more confidence. There are clothes I think are so cute, but over weight people look horrible in them, I want to be able to wear those clothes and look great not pregnant. I want to do activities and not run out of breath so fast. I don't dance because I'm over weight but it looks so fun, CONFIDENCE. I want to walk into a room full of guys and not want to run and hide instead I want to walk in and think to myself "yeah they want me!"

Why am I doing this?

1. Because I'm tired of looking 5 months pregnant when I'm not.

2. Because I want to reduce my chances of breast cancer (family history).

3. Because I want to look and feel good.

This is my first time on SP and I really like it.

Congratulations, JADENSFITNESS, on overcoming your apprehension of working out in front of your husband. You are doing this for YOU, number one. And it is wonderful that your daughter can grow up seeing that eating healthy & exercise are simply normal parts of life. Congrats on your new you!

I really like your answers, DEZYNERMAMA!!! *Healthy* is a great thing to focus on as opposed to physical proportions... it's something I should start with now to get a head start on setting a good example for my own daughter. Of course, it is easier said than done... It's hard not to focus on size when that's the part of me I hope to change! Of course, this probably just shows that I am still in the very beginning phases of this new lifestyle.

For those of you talking about hubbies-- I know where you are coming from!
My husband doesn't make fun of my eating or the way I look (thank god! that is just awful!) and in fact has lately been very supportive of me working out... But prior to the past month or so, I was always too embarrassed to work out in front of him, which I think made him think I was doing it less than I really was. That's definitely a hurdle I had to overcome myself before he understood that I really wanted this. Now, I don't care how foolish I look- rather than sit on the couch with him while we watch our nightly shows, I do my stretches and strength training with my band and ball on the floor. He seems to appreciate that I am trying, and after getting over my own worries, I see the results of working out more and it motivates me to keep this habit up :)

He is also guilty of being one of the snacker hubbies! He always buys/ makes these delicious, indulgent desserts and wants me to eat some or they will be a *waste*! I try my hardest to resist temptation, but sometimes I just have to try a little... I wish he was more into this healthy lifestyle so we could do it together~ I really feel I would be more successful if I could rid the house of unhealthy foods, so when temptation struck there wouldn't be goodies around to go to!

Live with intention. Walk to the edge. Listen hard. Practice wellness. Play with abandon. Laugh. Choose with no regret. Appreciate your friends. Continue to learn. Do what you love. Live as if this is all there is.

Great topic, and great self reflection from everyone! Why am I doing this? Because I am tired. I will be 40 this year, and I am tired of being overweight. I am tired of seeing pictures of myself and thinking, "Do I really look like THAT?" Just a bad camera angle, of course. Not me! I am tired of trying to go shopping just to find that none of the close fit right. It's the style, right? Not me! I am tired of excuses.

I have three beautiful daughters. One eye opener was when my 13-year old started saying she was fat. This child is in 8th grade, same height as me, and weighs 84 lbs soaking wet. She wears pants that are a size 00! And she thinks she's fat?!? It was easy to blame society at first. You've all seen the ads, & super thin models. Then I started to realize how many times I had said I was fat. How many times I complained about my jeans not fitting correctly, or a shirt being too short, or the dread of swimsuit shopping. I am doing this because I am tired of setting a bad example for my girls. I no longer talk about fat or thin. We talk about being healthy. Healthy eating. Healthy exercise. Healthy thinking. That is why I am doing this. That is why I will succeed.

Why am I doing this?

-I have been overweight since the third grade. It's always been a source of embarrassment for me. I want to be confident about my body!

-I want to be able to participate in activities with my family and friends without thinking "oh no" when asked to do it.

-I want to be able to hike again up a local mountain that I used to when I was a kid. (I probably could now, but it would not be easy.)

-I do not want to go the way of some of my other family members: staying obese and then dying because of it.

-When one of my students asks me to play a game of one on one B-Ball with them, I want to say: OK, LET"S GO!

Take a look at my blog - www.believingastronomer.com

That's a great question? Why am I doing this?

I'd also like to tie my shoes and breathe at the same time.

I'd like to look fabulous in a wedding dress come October/08.

I'd like to feel good after a day of clothes shopping, instead of feeling disheartened after a day of what turns out to be shoe shopping.

I'd like to be more active and enjoy life instead of obsessing over my weight.

There's probably more, but it's not easy letting even these few reasons out from inside.

I'm really grateful for my sister for introducing this site & for all of your inspiring words. emoticon

It's so inspirational to read everbody's reasons. So here are mine.
To feel confident in a bikini this summer
To feel healthy
To be proud of myself
To be more active
So I can enjoy life to the fullest

The only thing in life you regret are the risks you didn't take.

Why am I doing this?

1. I'm tired of having this weight problem hanging over my head - it's been there for 20 years now, and that's long enough!

2. Because I love my daughter more than anything and want to be a good role model for her. I don't her to grow up with weight ever being an issue - I'd do ANYTHING to spare her the struggles I've had with weight!

3. For the baby I lost in December (miscarriage at 7 weeks) - I want to be in the best shape I can for my next pregnancy so that I'll have a healthy baby!

4. To finally feel proud of myself. I know that if I can do this, I can do anything!

5. So that I don't dread dress-up events - there's nothing worse than wearing a dress and having your thighs rubbing together (chafed thighs are no fun)!!

Hey that's good news ! Its a problem tracking yourself on weight but you could always use the are you healthy tracker. Scroll down spark points to find it I think.

It just measures the things you have done to be healthy today like Hours of sleep, eating fruit and drinking water - not your weight. Then tells you if your healthy today.

That should keep you motivated for the big day when you can really get going again with excercise.

I bet you find that your thinner than you are today when the baby comes - because you WILL be loosing fat you just won't know how much until your done !!

That will be 2 things to look forward to !

Good Luck xxxx emoticon

P.S. I just found If you scroll down to the bottom of this page and click pregnancy there is a site that is made for you I think.

I'm in shock, i just talked to my doctor and she said that my hgc levels are high and then i realized my ''friend'' is a few days late, meaning my doctor thinks I'm pregnant AGAIN, so i may have another obstacle in my path of weight loss. Does anyone know if its safe to lose weight if i am pregnant?

I just got a really good tip from one of my other groups and thought I would share it with everyone. As one of your rewards for reaching your goals along the way, you can put a little bit of money aside (like $5 or so, whatever you can/want) to help buy your new wardrobe when you reach your ultimate goal! I thought that was a really good idea.
Also, thank you ABBIE47 for your words of encouragement! We ARE going to do this!!!

Reasons I'm trying to lose 30 lbs.
1. I want to be healthy for myself and my family
2. I want my children to develop healthy eating habits.
3. I want to look great for my husband.
4. I want to pull out my old size 10's and have them fit!

jadensfitness - I know you said you're looking for a buddy to motivate you that's around your age. I'm not sure how old you are, but I have young children too. My name is Kelly, I'm 28, and I have a 3-yr old daughter and 18-mo old twin sons. I'm refusing to carry around this extra weight from my twin pregnancy anymore. I'd love to find a buddy to keep my accountable because I've been on message boards before and feel that I kind of fall of the wagon because I let myself get lost in the shuffle.

I wouldn't say i have an unsupportive hubby but I don't have a supportive one either, and yup he buys the junk food I enjoy having..the other day he bought 2 individual butterscotch cheeses cakes. The one for me is still in the fridge and i'm looking at it as a challenge. Expiry date is 23rd and I will throw it out if it's still
there. I honestly feel they feel threatened that we are doing something that will improve us in so many ways and with that they lose the control they think they have over us. I am doing alot of positive thinking and keep telling myself I CAN AND I WILL DO THIS!! To prove it to myself that i CAN AND WILL.
so...keep telling yourself that you are going to prove him wrong and LET'S DO IT!!

Great topic!
I never had a problem with weight until I got pregnant over 4 years ago. I totally used it as an excuse and got out of control. Now that I'm a bit older so many things have changed and I realize oops.
Why do I want to do this?
-to be able to look in the mirror and not feel disgusting
-to have my husband all over me like when we first met
-to be able to keep up with my son
-to wear jeans again instead of sweats all the time
-to wear cute summer dresses again
-to be able to keep up with my son
-to socialize without hiding in a corner
-to get out on the dance floor and have fun again
-to be able to keep up with my son
yah that's a big one:)
-to feel good all around
-to prove to myself that I can do it!

It's good to know that I am not the only one dealing with an unsupportive spouse. I am sorry that you have to deal with it though because I know how it feels. He is somewhat better than he used to be. Almost 2 years ago he would oink at me if he saw me eating anything, and tell our children that they really need to watch what they eat and make sure that they do not eat too much and get fat like their mommy (keep in mind our kids were only 3 and 5 at that time). Beginning of last year we split up for 4 months and I lost 20 pounds within a one month time frame but I have been on a plateau since. We've been back together almost a year and he was being really supportive at first. I guess because he saw the results, but the longer I am stuck at 200, the more unsupportive he becomes. I guess old habits die hard. I am not doing this for him though, I am doing it for myself. I want to be healthy and live a healthy lifestyle and set a good, healthy example for my children. I told him to keep his negative comments to himself because negativity comes from within and he is not bringing going to bring me down with him. I am going to prove him wrong!

My husband is like that too in his own way, but he will buy junk food that i love and then tell me if i don't eat it its going to go bad and then it was a waist of money, he has since gotten better since i blew up at him but he still isn't as supportive as he should be. just point it out that is he thinks you cant do it to keep it to himself because you are atlest trying and it doesn't help if hes going to be a jerk about something you want to do.

Does anyone else have a partner/significant other that is not supportive? My husband and I have been married for 7 years, so he has been with me through thick and thin (literally). Last night he saw one of my motivational pictures I have been collecting and placing around where I can see them throughout the day to keep me on track and he made the comment that I am never going to look like that and he has come to terms with having a heavy wife because he does not believe that I can/will actually lose the weight.

Why am I doing this?

1. main reason~ I stepped on the scale and have been at my highest point of 185lbs (higher than when I was 9 mos pregnant) consistently for a few weeks...ENOUGH! I want to lose weight!

2. I am not healthy right now...I want to be healthy

3. I want to promote a healthy lifestyle for my son

4. I want to live longer

5. I dont want to get diabetes (like just about everbody else in my family)

6. I was spending too much eating out to lunch everyday with my mom...and gaining too much...it wasnt good for either pf us financially or physically...and I am now getting her into the Y with me on lunch breaks

7. I want to look HOT when I go on my 30th bday Mediterranean cruise with my best girlfriend next summer (shes a whopping 95 lb tiny little thing!) We are both turning 30 next year and I dont want to look my age...I want to get IDed again!

I could go on all day about my reasons...but those are the main ones for now :)

Pick out that bikini, girl, because you are on your way. What happened yesterday is in the past. Today is a fresh, new day and you are primed for this challenge. You WILL get the weight off and KEEP the weight off...THIS TIME! Stay encouraged and give that sweet little girl lots of kisses from your new Spark Buddies.

God bless,
Marilyn

First off, let me just admit something up front... This is my second time on SP too! I guess there are a lot of us out there... :oP The first time around, Sparkpeople really helped me get myself organized and into a routine of working out and eating more healthily- I lost all of the weight I had hoped and looked better during the time I used this program than EVER before. But then I moved in with my boyfriend (now he's my hubby) and lost track of what I had been doing... and long story short, ended up losing my motivation. I am back now, hoping to change again- I had a daughter just under a year ago and have been working on my own to lose that weight, but I know this program will help once again to focus me and keep me motivated! I am also looking for a buddy around the same age to help keep me on track... any takers?

Now, for my response...
Why am I doing this?

I am doing this to feel confident and revitalized.

I am doing this because I want (need!) to have the energy to play and run around with my daughter this summer.

I am doing this to be sexy in a bikini again!

I am doing this to change the way I feel about exercising- it's not a chore, it's a healthy habit and a necessity. And when I actually force myself to do it, I am happy I did.

And, lastly... I am doing this to be proud of myself again.

Arianasmommy,
You are not a mean wife! At least not based on what you just shared with us. You are trying to accomplish something of value to you. You are attempting to do something that is extremely difficult under the best of circumstances. You have to be a little selfish right now. And, yes, those around you will not understand and they will be crabby about it. But, enduring that for a little while is a small price to pay to get the results that you want...need!

Hang in there... don't bring home the McDonalds (take your healthy meal to work with you)...and throw away anything leftover by the family that does not fit in with your plan.

You can do this! You deserve it! You really do!

Try to get your husband on board, by explaining why this is so important to you. His support would be great, but you are moving ahead,...anyway!

God bless,
Marilyn

This is my second time on this site too.... The first time i lost more then i was expecting to tolose and then i moved in with my husband(who is the household cook)and he stgarted to make more fatty foods and i had the time to sit down and eat it also didnt help i worked at mcdonalds and got free food or 50% off food, well anyways just working at mcdonalds and having my huisband cook made me gain about 20lbs back then i found out i was pregnant with my now 8 month old daughter and i went fron 140lbs to over 260lbs, then after she was born i was down to 180lbs when she was about 2 months old and then once again gained alot of weight. i was 237lbs and now im 230lbs i feel helpless this time, im stressed, i cant find time to work out between chasing 3 kids and doing everything for my husband and his parents(we pay his mom to cook and clean the house now and shes to busy to do what we pay her for so i have to do it alot of the time)but other than that my husband and his parents LOVE to bring home the junk that i love the most(his mom is diabetic) and its making me gain weight since he guilts me into eating the food becaqsue it will go bad if i dont, last night i did a good thing and poured a full thing of dish soap on the junk lol but i ended up breaking down and eating something from mcdonalds so yesterday wasnt a good day, but i hope that im stronger today and my husband got the point of im not alowing him to enable me anymore and he wont be eating something if i cant(im a mean wife but i have to be fair)

Marilyn,
Yes, sugar is in everything - it's a conspiracy I tell ya! :) Sound like we are in the same boat with the stuff.
Thanks so much for the encouragement!

Seansaunt,
To be honest, this is my second time around on SP too! We can get each other in gear and keep it off this time! I lost 30 and put it ALL back on!
Advice on beggies and fruits - try A LOT to find what you like - disguise them at first with low fat sauces, dressings, cheese, yogurt, spices... you may learn to love them eventually just plain like I do.

Welcome and thanks for jumping right in there!

I can see you running around those national parks.

I try to sneak my veggies into my brown rice and wheat pasta dishes. You might try that. Also, the Weight Watchers, Lean Cuisine, etc. meals are good, quick and easy!

You'll be at goal weight before you know it!

God bless,
Marilyn

Hi everyone. Hope you don't mind my jumping in here.

I hate to say it, but this isn't my first time on SP. I lost 30 pounds the first time, and have put 14 of it back on. But I'm done with that. I'm going to do it this time. Hopefully with some help from my new found friends.

Why am I doing this? I'm doing this so that I can tie my shoes and breathe at the same time.

I'm doing this so that I can go out with my husband and take pictures in national parks without needing to stop for so many breaks.

I'm doing this so that I can fit into a smaller size.

I have found it's not the amount of food I eat, it's what I choose to eat that's the problem.

I'm NOT a big fruit or veggie eater, so any suggestions y'all have on that count would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, I'm Dawn!

Hey girl,
You WILL keep it off. And, your statement "Eat to live, not live to eat" definately needs to be on a T-shirt of mine. I am also addicted to sugar and the only way that I know to deal with it is avoidance. I would say abstinance, but sugar is in stuff that we don't even realize. So, it is probably impossible to totally abstain, but I avoid it like the plague. I used to eat one of the large Hershey's with almonds (are they 1/2 or 1 pound bars), a can of cashews (I like the sweet and salty thing), then wash it all down with a Mr. Pibb (aaaahhhh!). Now, this wasn't a meal. It was just a snack (usually at bedtime). I didn't see anything wrong with this. I work hard. I take care of the kids and the house. Don't I deserve a treat? Well, yes I do. But eating like that was hurting me, not helping me...that's not a treat. I am still trying to find appropriate non-food substitutes that don't break the bank. Nothing gives me that 'feeling' though, which is real sign of addiction.

Hang strong!

God Bless,
Marilyn

hmmmm....
Why am I doing this?
...I want to be able to move my body the way I used to, without straining or getting out of breath.
...I want to look and feel good in my clothes and swimsuit.
...I want to decrease my blood pressure.
...I want to eat to live, not live to eat.

I never had a weight problem until my thirties. My twenties were filled with eating disorders - and being under weight. Now they are catching up with me...I have lost the same 25 pounds 3 times now. I am addicted to sugar and the only way I can keep it off is to stop using the stuff. I turn 40 this year and want to keep it off this time!

I am a Biggest Loser fan. Tonight is the finale. I'll be in front of the TV- for sure. One thing that made a big impression on me were the "Why am I doing this?" statements that they had on their t-shirts in the beginning. I want us to share with each other the "Why am I doing this?" statements that we would (and can) proudly display on t-shirts and in our minds and hearts and in the words that we say to others and ourselves.

Okay, I'll start:

Why am I doing this?... to be filled with confidence and satisfaction with myself

Why am I doing this?...to fall into my husband's eyes the way that I fall into his arms

Why am I doing this?...to be healthy and strong- the way God intended me to be

I could go on forever. I've been overweight most of my adult life. It has limited me socially, physically and professionally. I want to be normal weighted, which doesn't mean that I will ever be skinny. I want to be comfortable in my body. I know that I will always have to watch what I eat and exercise. I'll never be able to go back to the way things were... eating with reckless abandon. It truly is a lifestyle change. ( I used to think that was just something advertisers and doctors said to make dieting seem more palatable, but it's not.)

I wish all of you the best on your journey. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Okay, stop reading and reply.

Why are you doing this?...
