I have used a staff for hiking for many years. In 08 I broke my ankle. When I went into see the Dr I was using the staff. The Dr took the cast off and told me it was healed but would hurt the rest of my life, but since I wasn't afraid to use my staff in public if wouldn't hurt as often. I seldom use the staff around the house, but use it when walking outside and when I'm going to be on my feet for long periods of time.

A man that made canes and staffs said the worse thing that ever happened to the back was when cans and staffs went out of style The cane takes up to 40% of your weight off your hips and legs and the staff that's 60% of your weight off you lower back, hips and legs.

Another benefit is when a guy was getting a little to close for comfort, I told him it was a womping stick and did he want me to show him how it was used. There are places that teach seniors and people unsteady on their feet to use the staff and cane to defend themselves and he didn't want to find out if I had been trained. I have

I can identify with that about the healing, L - when I had the surgery on my foot, it was weeks before I could put that foot on the ground at all, and months before I could walk without a cane. Now, though there are some bad days, I am walking pretty well and usually pain-free. I'm grateful for every step.

Thanx for the tip about the 'net and finding the basic words. I will go search out some YouTube Polish lessons. At least I should be able to say "Merry Christmas," lol...

I got out of the hospital just before THanksgiving. I am still recuperating at home, but am getting stronger every day. I will always have the problems I went into the ambulance with, but I am blessed to have access to great medical care.

DD and I just stay at home, nobody to really be with anymore.

Our friend Monica is a flight attendant and she is German, so knows Europe very well. Her hubby, who is my best friend's son, was in the FBI and was an Alaskan State Trooper for years. They live near us now and are working on their Juneau-born sailboat to do a world sailing for about 3-5 years. We are hanging out with them(they are DD age), so maybe over the holidays after they return from Germany and Japan

Kasey, I am glad you are doing better and traveling. INternet can give you some basic words to use ,, streets, foods, bathroom..

Thanx for that, Patty! It really will be an adventure for me, and the friends I'm going to see are really nice people. I've met some of their family members as well when they've visited here, so with only ten days I imagine I'll have enough to keep me busy and English speakers around, lol.

I've been experimenting with YouTube "how to" videos to see if I can learn some of the basics. And I've heard there's an app I can download to the phone that will translate for me. I might try that if only for the fun of it. ;-)

A winter wedding! That sounds lovely! And what a great start to the New Year for them.

Wishing you all the best. And when you get a chance, if you're up for it, it would be great to see some of the wedding pix.

Sorry out of touch last few months. Spending a lot of time caretaking for my hubby who had a stroke in April. Also doing lots of decluttering. Still so much to do.

For Christmas I am fortunate to have all 4 of my kids visiting plus my daughter-in-law, future son-in-law and granddaughter. So it will be a houseful.
Will be fun, but I have much to do preparation wise. Both cleaning and making the house Christmassy.

Then January 4, my daughter gets married. That will be busy and happy occasion. Praying its not too snowy that weekend!

Kasy, my second daughter was living in Poland for 4 years and loved it. Although she picked up some Polish while living there, she didn't have too much trouble not knowing Polish. Everyone wanted to learn English. She was in Warsaw so can't speak for the rural countryside. Based on her experience, you should enjoy. She found the people very nice and friendly. (She is now living at home with me while she gets herself established back here in the States).

Happy December and holidays to all!

I don't generally do much at Christmas - the last couple of years I've just had quiet celebrations here with friends, at their place.

This year I'm going to Poland for ten days to stay with friends who used to live in this apartment complex. I've never gone to a country that wasn't English-speaking. I'm a little anxious about it, but at the same time, it's an adventure...

Here we are, doing the one-month countdown.

Yes, I know it's only 25 days until Christmas, but New Year's Day has a lot more meaning for me in my (ha ha) old age.

Since there is no Thanksgiving in the UK they don't really have any kind of "marker" for when to start doing Christmas stuff. I think they've been showing Christmas movies for two months (I've ignored 'em), playing Christmas music in the stores (blech), and of course decorations and merchandise and all that have been on display since I think the beginning of October.

Well. Be that as it may, I am getting ready for the clean slate of a new year, even if it is a month away.

What about you? Plans? Visits? Hosting people over the holidays? ;-)
