If you eat a well balanced diet every single day you shouldn't need a supplement but I know with my own diet somedays I'm to busy to get everything in that I need so I take a multivitamin everyday. And what nutrients that your body had enough of that day will be gotten rid of when you go to the bathroom.

I think that getting *most* of your nutrients from food sources is the way to go. If your friend doesn't want to eat healthy, then at least he is doing SOMETHING by taking the multivitamin.
I personally can't stomach multivitamins (too much iron) but I do take a calcium + Vitamin D & Magnesium.

I do believe in supplements. I take calcium, vitamin d, and fish oil every day. I am really starting to read up on everything and learn just how to get the right amounts of everything.

I should also add, that even though we may think we have a nice balanced diet and are getting all our nutrients, we may not begetting all we need.

Here's a little story... I eat mostly fruits, veggies, and grains with some meat sprinkled in here and there. I also eat dairy and eggs on a regular basis. Back in November I noticed my big toes were going numb. I brought it up to my doctor and finally just a couple of months ago she figured out that I had a severe B12 deficiency (which is a very serious condition). She suggested I start taking a daily supplement. Here's the thing... B12 comes only from a supplement or animal products. Well, I eat animal products quite frequently (though not as much as most americans), and it takes only a small bit of B12 in your food to store up years worth of B12, and I thought that I was eating great and getting everything I needed. But, because I have another health issue, my body ran through B12 faster than I could take it in. So, be sure you are going to your doctor regularly that they are testing you to make sure you have the appropriate levels of vitamins and minerals... even if you eat a "good" diet!

I agree with Pam but no matter how well you eat a supplement (in my mind) is always a good thing. I eat a good diet but I am sure day to day I am missing something.

If a person is eating a good diet they will get all the nutrients they need from their food. If a person eats a terrible diet, they need the multivitamin to get all their vitamins and minerals. So, sounds like technically he is getting all the vitamins and minerals that he needs, though not from the best source.

I work for a pharmacist who eats terribly. I keep telling him he is not getting the nutrients he needs but he says he takes a multivitamin. I still don't think he is getting all the vitamins and minerals he needs. Am I correct? I assumed that vitamins should be used as supplements not as your main source of vitamins and minerals. Who is correct?
