my dr suggests 1.5 lbs a week if very overweight, otherwise a lb a week is good.

i reached 55 lbs lost so far since joining spark on jan. 25. a total of 65 since christmas.

next goal is 40 lbs by Jan. 25, 2009.

I can do all things in Him who strengthens me.

Thanks for the input guys! I will go in and change my goal to 5 pounds a month. I've already lost 4 this month now. Hopefully, that will keep me from getting so discouraged.

LALAMESS, I also think that your goal is to high. When you set goals so high they are hard to reach and then if you don't raech them you get discouraged. Setting them smaller and reaching them makes you feel much more succeesful.

I wish you all the luck reaching those lofty goals you have set!

Hi LALAMESS,
I don't want to tell you what to do or anything, but don't you think 10 pounds a month is a little high for a goal? I mean, that's more than 2 pounds a week. SP says it's good to lose 1 to 2 pounds a week and you want to lose more than 2 a week..
Just my 2 cents BUT I wish you the best of luck !!!

Hi guys! Loved reading all the weightlosses, makes me feel like a "loser" - not the kind I want to be though. Unfortunately, I'm one of those who's been struggling. I've been up and down in the last 4 months. Good news is that I'm back on and going down. All in all since last May '07, I'm down 36 pounds. I had been down 45, but gained some. I've re-set my ticker and trying to put a 10 pound a month goal on it. Wish me luck and keep the inspiring stories coming!

As of yesterday I am down 37 lbs. I am 3 lbs away from my 40 lbs goal by July 5. So I am well on my way of reaching that goal. After that I want to loose a total of 50 lbs by Aug 7. I'm glad to see so many of us are doing so well on this site. It's a good feeling to put on you favorite jeans that were super tight and have them baggy. Though I will miss them. I'm sure they can be replaced.

Initial Goals:
1. Get back into my previous weight loss jeans.

2. Meet my fiber requirements 5 days a week.

Now that I am finally exercising for the first time in 23 years I have decided to set these weekly exercise goals.

Hi fellow classmates of Jan 20-26! I'm just now finding the time to check in and report my progress! After five months, I have managed to lose 35 pounds! I started as a size 18W and am now wearing Misses size 14 and those clothes are getting loose too! I work out almost every day and I keep track of all that I eat. I've been a little lax about getting on SP for the past month and a half simply do to time constraints, but I'm back and hope to pick up where I left off and continue to lose those pounds. I want to go back to school (work) at the end of the summer and surprise everyone with what I managed to do during the break!

Megan - Look how much you HAVE accomplished!! I can totally relate to things not going as planned (my original goal date was last winter) - BUT you're human. All you can do is move forward and make better choices starting today. You CAN do it!

And please make sure to take the time to revel in what you HAVE accomplished so far. You didn't get unhealthy overnight.

Best of luck reaching your goals!

WOW time flies - I've be down and up and now slowly going down again. I really need to find time to log in and record what goes into my body - my fitness has stayed somewhat strong but i really need to put myself as the priority. i do much better if i take the time to log in and go for the support. its AGAIN an issue of moderation - i found myself spending more time than i had on this intriguing site and then skimping on other things. so yet again i'll try to at least ck in here and do the nutrition thing!

Megan, the good thing is that you are still trying and that you are not indulging like you were before SP. That is an accomplishment! You may not be exactly were you would like to be by now but you will get there! I know you can do it! Sometimes we do got thrown in a tail spin but the main thing is that you don't let it take away the succees you have already made.

Actually, I am not at all where I had planned on being and that has left me a little disappointed! I have had a lot of personal issues to deal with and it has really sent me for a loop. I am still not able to get myself back on track, but I am not indulging like I did in the past. I will get there, but it may take a lot longer than I had hoped!

I am so glad I startted Spark back in January - I just feel better - I have lost some weight, would have been more if I behaved myself more, but honestly I haven't kept up with exercise for this long a period of time in my life ever!! I am down almost 3 sizes and that is fabulous - but more so is that I just have gotten to the point where I enjoy my exercising and feel sluggish if I don't do some. That is something I never thought would be part of my lifestyle!

i was around 230 at new years, and around 225 or so when joining this site. i weighed myself this morning (Even after breakfast) and was at 199.2.

just keeping track of what i was eating, and cutting down on the junk had a big part of doing this. also i believe it was the supplements and vitamins that i am taking that helped me controll my eating.

this site along with another site called bodyspace (part of bodybuilding.com) helped me track both my food logs (on here) and my workout logs (on the bodyspace site).

i'd have to say that without this site, i would have never been where i am today.

:)

Wow, it's only been 4 months! Although I have not lost that many pounds, I have accomplished tons of things:
- My overall health has greatly improved. I can now go up a flight of stairs without loosing my breath.
- I have considerably lowered my carbs intake and I am eating a lot more protein. I got smart about substitutes so I am still eating all the things I enjoy.
- I have started jogging to challenge myself. If I can loose that weight, then I can run. I never thought I could, but I am slowly working my way up to running one mile without stopping.
- Now I can feel I can accomplish anything with a Spark Plan.

Hello all... You wonderful team !!!
I have been doing really good. I am getting rid of around 5 pounds a month. It's coming off slowing BUT it's coming off. People are asking me now "How much weight have you lost"? Boy, does that feel good..
I really enjoy exercising everyday and I don't have to force myself to do it. I just make sure I do it by 11:30 am and if I haven't, I stop what I'm doing and go and exercise. I am .6 pounds away from getting rid of 25 pounds since starting SP.
I wish everyone an AWESOME month and lets sweat those pounds away !!
Lots of love,
Dawn

Hi all! The past 4 months have been wonderful for me. Not only have I begun my journey to living healthier, I'm beginning, ever so slowly, to like exercise. I never thought I'd get to that point, and it's still iffy at this point! I've lost about 40 pounds, I'm under 300 for the last time, I've learned a bunch of stuff and learned how to apply my knowledge, and I'm learning how to get through a plateau without giving up! Hopefully by the time we've been here 5 months the plateau will be a thing of the past!

For the past 4 months I've been losing the same 10lbs again and again. It is really easy for me to beat up on myself about not making any real downward scale progress. Reading posts from other slow starters has shown me yet again that I'm not unique!

During these past few months, I've been learning to cook healthier, starting everyday off with a wholesome breakfast (instead a pop tart!), and planning lunches during the work week. I've also started to move more. I need to focus more on each little step instead of only looking at how far I have yet to go!

The new class would be up to you. It all depends on how fresh you want to start--whether a completely blank page, or you can keep some (like the knowledge you've gained from the past 4 months--even if it's mostly what you don't want to do again).

Definitely start with the "fast break" stage again and build up momentum, but everything else can stay or go depending on what you want to do.

Hi everyone
Well-I must admit that I have "fallen off the wagon" so to speak and do not have any positive achievements to report. Congrats to everyone who does though! I need to restart my own goals and get back on track. Not sure if that means that I need to be in a new "class" or not.
Good luck to everyone.

My weight loss/ good health journey has been slow & steady. I've lost 45 pounds & a lot more inches. I've gone from a size 28 to an 18!!!

I've updated a before & after photo on my spark page if anyone is interested... so check it out if you DARE? LOL...

I've been really active with the Louisiana group... & am co-leader with the St. Tammany Group... so I'm participating a lot.

The hardest part for me has been going back to work & not finding time to exercise. *I started a job that had rotating schedules & it really left me drained & with no energy or strength to exercise at all.... Believe it or not I lost 6-1/2 pounds that month!!! *It was mostly muscle tissue... NOT fat!

So I quit that job & have a better job with more reasonable hours... & higher pay.

I'm now resuming my daily exercise but I've noticed that my weight is marinating. *probably building muscle again... but I AM losing inches~!!!

I'm taking baby steps... & still have a LONG way to go...

Thanks for the interst... stop by my groups & look around... the spark is bein spread... & there is hope & inspiration all around!!!

Good luck to all of you!!!

Exercise... drink your water... & eat healthy, & NEVER, NEVER give up!!!

Gentle huggs & blessings... TUNIA

I have a confession, I have fallen off and I am finding it difficult to get back on. I get caught up with school, the baby, life in general. I don't want to make excuses so I am back now and hope to stick with it. Just posting what I have eaten today makes me realize how much I threw away. Encouragement is always appreciated!

Wow, I can't believe it's been 4 months. I also have been going up and down with my weight. I was so good in the beginning & had so much motivation, then I lost it. I would just give in. I hope this is a wake up call for me. Seeing how well some of you did in the last 4 months makes me feel sad for my failed efforts. I WILL NOT GIVE UP, TODAY IS A NEW DAY!! emoticon I will set a new goal for the 4th of July. Down 10 pounds.

Stay on track and don't give up. When you are hungry, remember why you are doing this. WRITE ALL MEALS DOWN EVERY MEAL, EVERY DAY!!

Hey, thanks for the pedometer! emoticon I am working on making a number of lifestyle changes, including spending less for groceries, etc - and the momentum of really tracking my calories yesterday plus working on the family budget kept me going. I am tired of feeling stuck in a rut. Last night while dh worked late, I went through both my chest freezer and my regular freezer, decided to toss out what was definitely never going to be eaten (instead of pretending I might use it someday), and this morning my agenda is to work on definite menus. I tracked my calories carefully yesterday using the food tracker. I went over by just three calories, so there is hope!! I have a hard time by the end of the day when I am really hungry and spending time alone. Dh and I own our own business and he is often gone until later in the evening. I work a shorter day because I also manage our home and family, which is a job in itself. I actually do better when I go to work, because I brown bag it and I don't every put anything in my lunch that isn't healthy. Try to save any "treats" for dessert in the evening if I want it then. Thanks for the boost of your kind words - I feel more energized and hopeful now; I will continue to track my food. It's hard to ignore the numbers that stare at you in the face emoticon , but I am proud to have finished up only 3 calories over....off to do my Saturday job - making our house a home!

After 18 weeks of being a member here at sparkpeople I am down a total of 53lbs!!!! I have lost 10" off of my waist and 9" off of my hips. I have dropped from a size 24 jeans and am now comfortably into a size 16 jeans.

I am still motivated and still exercising. I continue to eat healthy, getting 6-9 fruits/veggies servings per day. I can't believe how far I've come and don't really feel that I'm dieting. I'm so thankful to sparkpeople and all the wonderful friends I've made here.

That's it. I'm starting over. I am tired of letting my emotions get in the way, and I'm determined to not let them stop me from living a healthy life.

Heck, I lost 30 pounds on weight watchers. Even though I gained it all back plus more, that should not stop me from losing it again.

I am fed up with myself and am disgusted with the way I look... I need a change

Hi I haven't posted in the past 2 weeks, but I did lose 26 lbs since I started! I really enjoy this site, just with the ending of the school year I have been busy. Thanks for the help! I went down 2 sizes also, didn't measure, but i know I lost inches from this fact.
I will definitely keep up the eating habits all summer, hope to lose 5-10 more before returning to school in sept. good luck to all and thanks for the HELP. jean

Yay, 4 months, hard to believe.

I have lost 34 pounds officially since starting..yay for me...and congrats to all who are sticking to it!

I have also lost:
*4 1/2 inches off my hips
*4 inches off my waist
*2 inches off my upper arm
*3 inches off my upper thigh
and even an inch off my neck....go figure!

My plateaus have only lasted two weeks tops, because when I weigh in (Sunday mornings) and the weight is the same as the week before, I change my exercise routine. Works like a charm.

My diet hasn't changed all that much, I just eat far less than before....you know, stop when you get full....who knew diet and exercise would actually work???

Keep at it team, this is a goal you can get to. emoticon

Congrats to everyone who has lost this past 4 mos!

I have lost 13 lbs and am currently stuck at 168. I was starting to worry until I did my whole body measurements and relized that I had lost over 5 inches in the past 4 weeks, without losing a pound!

For those of you who are also stuck and want to track progress this way I measured my bust, waist, where my pants hit my belly, my hips, my thighs, my right calf and my arm.

Keep up the good work everyone!

Hello and thanks for the check up idea. I have lost 6 lbs. and have been struggling. I have a fibromyalgia and it makes it hard to keep even a daily routine up. But SP has been there for me and is my constant driving force not to give up. I'm happy about keeping the 6 lbs off. I have learned so much about eating along the way.

Hi team!!

I've had an interesting 4 months- I've lost 16 lbs, but I haven't really lost any inches. Not really sure what that's about, but I'm happy that the numbers are dropping :D

Hope you all are doing well! Sounds like you guys are truckin' right along :D Good luck everyone!!!

Wow, it sounds like you've been through a lot in a few months. And it sounds like your doing a good job in trying to lose weight.

Something I would suggest is lowering your "burned calories goal" (you can find a place to do this on your "start" page left column, will have to scroll down to see it...it also is the "my fitness" exercise settings). I couldn't exercise as much as SP started me out on, so I lowered it for me. With all of your current difficulties, it probably would be helpful for you too. This will help lower your calories consumed, which will help you lose weight (NOTE: this isn't a way for people that workout a lot to lose weight, you do need plenty of calories consumed so that you can burn them off, otherwise your body will go into starvation mode--always keep the calories burned goal close to what you actually do burn).

You might also want to try having a pedometer. See how many steps you take a day, and then work on increasing it. A study said that it's just as effective to walk 10,000 steps a day (everyday) as it is to workout 3 days a week. It seems that the group that worked out 3 times a week for 30 minutes only walked about 5,000 steps on the days not working out.

Other than that, just watch what you eat and make the best choices possible. Try to stay in your ranges. If your ranges are too low, lower the amount of weight you want to lose per week (under your goal weight set-up). Eating healthy will help you a lot, especially when you're having trouble exercising.

I have not posted on the board before, so I hope that this works. At the time I joined SP, I was recovering from a major abdominal surgery the prior September and had finally gotten the doctor's OK to do some gentle exercising. I began with some yoga and my Nordic Track machine, but found that it still made the incision site and interior abdomen sore, so had to cut back to less exercise until my February visit to the doc. The incision site, etc, finally felt "healed" in March. I then discovered that I was to have more surgery (ear surgery that involved drilling through part of my skull) at the end of April. I ended up doing little exercise as it was mud season and COLD here. Post surgery, I was not allowed to exercise for a couple of weeks. I finally got back on my bicycle last weekend and rode with my children; then did some walking with my husband. I have only lost 5 pounds since January emoticon I began tracking my diet more carefully last week - I am on allergy meds that leave me hungry and I don't want to gain any weight! I am hoping to get more inspired to exercise and need to do more in tracking my calories, but I feel pretty overwhelmed with work, life, and so on right now. Any ideas for how to get out of my slump?

I have to say that even though I have only lost about 10 pounds since I've started, I have learned so much through SparkPeople! I have always had a problem with nutrition, and now I'm eating healthier than I ever have in my life!! I know that as soon as I incorporate fitness back into my schedule, the weight will start falling off because now I have the tools to change my life. Hi everyone. I haven't done so hot lately. Did really well starting out, but have since slacked a bit. Still have the will to do it so I'm not giving up. Our MN weather didn't help much either. I prefer to exercise outdoors, but this year if it wasn't raining and cold, it was windy and cold. For some reason, I've developed sinus problems in my older age. If I spend alot of time outside when it's really windy, I end up with a really bad sinus headache. I've had quite a few of those this year, plus a cold that wouldn't go away. So now the weather has turned nice and I'm back to getting in my exercise. So hopefully I can start showing the progress that so many of you have seen.

Becky

Good idea CYNDIDAVISUSA, no point in hitting a brick wall. I'm sure you will be able to keep it under control and you can always compensate for it the rest of the days of this week. It's the weekly average that counts.

I didn't actually commit til sometime in February...since then I have lost 35 pounds. I have had company from out of town for the last two weeks and "entertaining" people, especially those who insist on eating things I don't normally have in the house, is really difficult.

I haven't gained any back, but my schedule is all screwed up for at least the next couple days...so I have decided not to stress over it and to do the best I can.

I have had a lot of up's and downs in the last few months. For the most part I can't keep a routine schedule and it is very frusterating. However for my positives I have climbed a mountain with a 50 lb rucksack, I improved my run time and my indurance has increased with my biking. We are going to be training for a 338 kil. bike ride which my husband just completed. We are going to do it together next year.

I feel that my strength and indurance is improving but I can not seem to budge on my weight. It is a little frusterating but I know if I keep it up the weight will eventually fall off

Try resetting your goal (based on your current weight) and try setting a workout goal (I know my "default" workout goal was too high for me, so I lowered it under the my fitness page setup--where you chose what days to workout). That might reset your goal calories to a level that will be more effective. Or, if you able, try upping how much you want to lose a week (you might not lose that much, but it might help you lose some).

That's great to hear that so many of you are doing so well. Me, not so much, well...I'm eating healthy, with-in my calorie range given by SP, and I'm exercising like a champ, but my weight doesn't want to go anywhere. In fact the last couple of days I've been gaining. It's really discouraging. part of me never wants to be on a "diet" again, and the other part of me want to stick to it since my goal date is now less then 5 weeks away. I know I'm not going to get the results I want by then, but it would've been nice to be at least HALF way. At this rate I'm not going anywhere.

It's a journey and not a race. To those that lost congrats and to those that didn't congrats too for staying in SP, so much harder to do when you don't get quick results. The will and desire to do it is what counts. We're here for you.

So I got a butt-kicking. I went to the gym today and feel sore but great! Sore because I got so many kicks in the butt! :) The good news is that I haven't gained anything over the past two months off the wagon. Time to get back at it. I made an agreement with my wife, and I can't feel bad if I have better/quicker results than she does; that's part of life. I'll stick around to get kicked a few more times, but I definitely appreciate it folks!!!

I have lost over 40 pounds and I have found that I have energy to spare! I love the euphoric feeling after a workout, and it feels pretty darned good to make the right choices nutritionally! I had no idea that just a few simple changes combined with a large amount of positive attitude would change me so much! Thanks to all of you for your support, and congratulations to all those who have made positive changes in their lives!!!

Well 4 months have come and gone and it has been a ride! I was at 19 lb lost and looking forward to 1 more lb for the 20 lost then life went crazy...and so did I. LOL. Mid-April a lot changed around here. Our nephew moved in. We hit a financial "pit" b/c our well, AC,2 cars, tires, etc. broke down. It has been just one thing after another. I hit a wall, got frustrated, stop tracking, gained a couple and have hit a plateau. I gain and lose the same 2-4 lbs and I can't regain momentum. I wish I had a better success story like others. Congrats to those that have kept their "engine" going.

It's better to allow yourself a little than to not allow it and then overindulge on it. You just have to plan out what your going to have and how much you will allow and then stick to it. Remember, this is a new lifestyle, not a diet--it's going to have to last for the long run. So take a little time to enjoy, just don't go overboard.

JENNALYNN0505, your plateau is probably stress related. The main things is to try and follow your Spark plan a little more closely by getting the right foods in and exercising (which helps relieve stress emoticon ). Also, continue to drink plenty of water (that may be more than 8 for some people, as well--something I learned on SP). And make sure that you get plenty of sleep--always make sure that you spend enough time recharging your body. Hope that helps and good luck on the bar exam.

I have lost 10 pounds since joining SP, 20 pounds since my highest weight in summer of 2007. I've also hit a plateau, but I know why. It's been a crazy month of finishing law school, seeing friends move away, and starting to study for the bar exam. My life has been shaken up the past couple of months and I've yet to get back on track to start losing again. I have a few good days of working out and eating right and then a few bad days-which is why I haven't gained any weight back. I keep losing and gaining the same 2 pounds and stay right in between 163 and 165. I'm down at least one size in clothes, but sometimes can get away with two sizes smaller than what I was wearing last summer. And one of the weirdest things-my feet have shrunk! I've lost weight like this before in recent years, and even been down about 10 more pounds than I am now and never noticed that side effect before!

Sadly I've fallen off the wagon. I seem to have lost all motivation to go to the gym (that I'm paying for until next january) or eat right. Back to my old self. I don't know how to get up and get going again. This is the first time i've logged into SparkPeople in probably a month or two. The doctor says I need to lose weight or I won't be able to get some surgery that I so need, but I just can't seem to get motivated. I need someone here that is willing to kick me in the butt, I guess. Maybe the best way is just to start again...
