You are doing a good job so far. I would not fear the exercise, it will not slow down the weight loss, in fact it should help boost it up. And as you go you will start to firm up. As far as starting walking can be a good way to get started, you really do not need to invest much money. Just be sure to have a decent pair of walking shoes and some comfortable clothes in layers so you can take some off if you start to get hot. And the weight training is excellent too. If you have a high speed connection you can check out some of the Spark People Videos, some will be beyond a beginner, but I think you should find some that are very helpful. And perhaps first of all, have you checked with your doctor. If you have not exercised for a long time I would want clearance from him first to be sure that you don't have any specific medical conditions. emoticon

I think weight training is an excellent way to start. Just that little bit will encourage your metabolism to work a little harder than it's working now... and it's probably just me being delusional, but I like to think that by gaining as much muscle as possible I'm going to be less likely to be one of those people who loses a ton of weight but still has fat arms and legs, or too much extra skin... even if I am being delusional I still use it as motivation.

I think adding exercise will only help you lose weight faster and help keep in off. I don't weight train with anything heavy because I tend to bulk up a bit. Not usual for women. I just read a SP article about this topic but I don't remember which one it was.

Hello Nik.... and others from SP team! I think that each body is unique in how it reacts to ANYTHING. Sometimes when I think my weight loss is going slow, I do notice far more energy when I am also exercising while watching my nutrition. So, I would encourage you to start out by walking a bit each day and then, gradually add other exercises to your work-outs. I love the exercise ideas that they give on Spark Page "Exercise a Day" - do you read those? Congrats on your weight loss thus far, that is awesome! nancy

Hi great weight loss. You will hit plateaus whether you exercise or not. Plateaus are not the results of exercising they are the result of the body deciding that this is the time to regroup. In other words the body has to adjust to the new weight and make sure that you are not starving it. So it goes into a mode where it distributes the weight loss more evenly and tries to maintain it.

Exercising produces muscles which weigh heavier than fat. So yes, exercising might not move the scale that much but it will change your measurements. If you haven't already, you should take your measurements in as many places as possible, not just bust, waist etc. but under the bust, thighs, calfs, etc. that is where you will notice that even though the scale is not moving, your body will become more toned and you will loose inches as a result.

Hope this helped somewhat.

Lucky You! I wish I had lost that much with out exercising! I wwalk a lot and do strenght exercises and have lost 18#. I am stuck of the plateau myself right now. I would go to the fitness section of SP and just take a look aroung for some exercises that would tone. I only use 3# weights so I don't think I am going to gain from that. Just go take a look around, you might find something that will fit your porpose.

Congratulations on deciding to start exercising. Perhaps you'll lose faster now.

Exercising doesn't cause plateaus. They happen for a variety of reasons. Just be sure to adjust your caloric intake to match your increased activity. A sedentary person needs fewer calories than an active one.

Ok, So I have a confession to make. Since I have started spark I have only done any type of organized exercise um maybe four times. Four times in 2 and a half months. Now, here's the thing. I've still lost 23 pounds, I've been losing an average of 3 pounds a week and I'm terrified that if I were to start working out, that would stop. I know myself and I know this would be devestating!! Maybe even to the point that I quit. But, now I want to start doing some toning with weight training and stuff. Any suggestions on how to do the training with out hitting the plateau?
