What about calisthetics (spell?)?
I know they are good for people who dont get in a lot of movement without risking injury or doing much to raise your heart rate...

i bet you could find a clever way to do it..
like hold your arms above your head for the first commercial break of each show... or her legs... twist from side to side at a slow pace with your elbows at shoulder level for the next commercial break...

i'm sure you could think of ways to make it fun or more useful to her, like when she folds her laundry not to put her arms down for as long as she can and have the unfolded clothes on one side and the folded on the other so she gets that twisting motion in.

i know our county has calisthetics shows on in the mornings on their government access channel, and the local senior center sponsors them on our public access channel...

If there were no rain, there could be no rainbows!

I'd like to be thin... but I like food better!

Thank you. You definitely made my heart smile.

I have gone to appts with her in the past, when I was her primary care giver, but now she is in another state, so I'm not able to be with her. I do talk to her online just abut every night, though. I have been giving her challenges dealing with water, soda, candy, journalling her thoughts (depression), etc. Exercise is the main area I have trouble with. I get stuck trying to think of small things she can handle, and making them seem like they are not exercise. I have to kind of trick her into it. ex: On nice days, I'll tell her to go sit on her swing and just enjoy the weather. She loves her swing, and she'll think of the swing, not the walking. *smiles*

Carla - How sweet of you to help your Mom get healthy! It sounds like you are an inspiration to her.

In light of her health problems, especially the bypass, I'd be very careful starting out. Does she feel comfortable enough to have you go to a doctor's appointment with her? That would be the best case scenerio. I'm sure her Doc will be THRILLED to hear that she has decided to take control of her health and would gladly recommend a plan.

In the meantime, you can issue her some healthy challenges that are non-excercise related - maybe start out slow with "drink 8 glasses of water a day," or if she's a soda drinker, "cut out 1 soda a day this week," etc.

Best of luck!

Ok, so I need help here. My mom is in really bad shape health-wise. Extremely overweight, lots of medical conditions (including over 15 years with diabetes, diabetic neoropathy, depression, just had a triple bypass last year, plus numerous other health conditions. At this point, I am about the only one she listens to (sometimes lol). She has trouble walking due to the weight, spurs, and a lifetime of just sitting around for everything. To be plain, she is extremely lazy. We've spent the past year trying to get her to see some things, and she finally is starting to realize them. And now that we have her depression to an acceptable level, she is wanting to change her health and lifestyle. I would like suggestions. I have been trying to give her a daily and a weekly challenge to complete. She seems to accept them, for one because they come from me, and for two because I try to keep them fun and keep her guessing. It doesn't become monotonous that way, and she doesn't really view it as exercise or whatever. If you need to ask anything for clarification, please do. Any suggestions would be so appreciated!!
