Hi everyone! I too have been slipping with food and exersize. Well, not so much with the food (I am staying within my calorie range, though on some days I'm on the high end when I try to stay at the low end), but with exersize I am losing my motivation. Over the last week, I have been doing the bare minimums just to get by.

But today I was really proud of myself. I got up before my husband had to go to work and I went out for a walk/jog. emoticon It was soooo cold, but I did it. And I actually feel really good this morning/early afternoon.

Had a great eating day-I added extra veggies to my lean cuisine lunch...out for dinner with the family...scary-got roast chicken, 2 veggies instead of potatoes, vegetable soup instead of cream. I did eat one small cardamon roll with 1/2 a pat of butter, got salad with balsamic vinagrette
I think I did okay

I finally moved on to Stage 2. I was probably doing what I should in this Stage but somehow thought there would be an automatic transition after I ate a certain way for a designated time or lost a certain amount of weight. Good thing I went back and reread the Stage information.

Got to head downstairs now to measure up some things.

I have to say the first 2 weeks I was really motivated. I don't know what happen this week. I wrote my food down, but I just ate mostly what I wanted. I just fell back into my old ways. I gave my self a pep talk, reminded myself why I want to lose this extra weight and not have to carry it around with me all summer. Reading all your messages helps remind me I am not doing this alone. emoticon

I must say that measuring everything is definetly different. I even have my husband doing it for me when needed. I found that the amount of meat was especially an eye opener. Vegetables I really never worried about.

It's funny I just went back and read an older post when I started stage two saying that I liked to measrue my food. I have no idea what I was thinking. I an getting a better Idea of what portions are supposed to look like. I have been looking up nutritional info for restarunts before we go out. We don't go out very often, but we have a couple of friends who have b-days this weekend so Like to night we are going to the olive garden. I checked out their web site and the have some meals that arn't to bad. I think I will ask for a box to come out with my meal so I can put half of it away for left overs right away. I am really bad at picking at my plate after I'm totally stuffed already. So we will see how it goes. What kills me are drinks though. I LOVE wine I know if you are going to have a drink it is your best option, but I can finish a bottle to myeslf, so I'm trying to stay away from it.

Wish me luck!

Amanda

Did okay on my week one of Stage 2 but I didn't have any scales until to day so some of my measuring was by the deck of cards or fist measurements. Stayed within calories nearly every day but was under on fiber and several nutrients until today.

I was sooo bad this week! I totally went over my calories like 4 days... I chose to eat items that I knew were HIGH in calories & fat. I feel that I managed my portions but I just didn't chose the right items... I'm still staying motivated in driniking my water usually 9-10 cups per day!

also when eating out ask if they have a senior's menu or even the child's menu you can order from... much smaller portions

Hey Gang - The measuring thing is only temporary - I promise! The point of the exercise is to get you to learn to visualize exactly what a serving looks like. Here in the US especially, we have blown portion sizes way out of proportion. We ARE the nation of "Biggie Size!" Once you are comfortable with what a cup of your favorite cereal looks like, etc. you don't have to weigh/measure everyday.

As far as eating out - again that can be tricky. I do try to find nutrition info on the restaurant if I know where we are going ahead of time. I then plan what I'm going to order well in advance.

But that is not always possible. This is why learning what portion sizes really look like is an invaluable skill. I try to visualize portions according to one of the first diet books I ever bought (The 3 Hour Diet):

meat/protein should be about the size of a deck of cards. Carbs (side dishes is how I think of those) should be about the size of a Rubik's cube. Veggies should half of your plate, or about the size of 3 DVD cases. Healthy fats (when eating out, this one can be tough, but just make the best choice you can) like olive oil, etc. should be about a bottle cap full.

All you can do is make the best choices possible.

Good luck and GREAT job so far!

I agree with others that measuring can be hard, but I am definately trying to do better at it, I'm better at cereal and dry things but it is harder when I cook at home, such as casseroles and pasta dishes, I am just trying to keep it small.

Thanks for the kind words Dori.
3 weeks and I am 14lbs down, almost 5 pounds a week without working out just a little slow walking. I am going to start strength training on Monday to kick it into high (well maybe medium) gear.

Thanks again

I agree AMANDARIED, I hate measuring also and I don't believe that this is a habit that is going to stick with me. I don't have a scale so I measure by the idae of a deck of cards or the palm of your hand. The veggies are not as bad or the cereal. I am trying and that is what we all must do if we intend on keeping this weight off.

I HATE MEASURING MY FOOD!!!!!!!!! Ok I got that out, but I really do hate it. I'm trying to at least measure the things I eat often so I know that a real serving looks like, but I don't think that measuring all my food everyday will become habit!

Hi Everybody,
I'm loving stage 2. In fact, I think I was kind of living stage 2 while I was in Stage 1-by accident. That made the switch so much easier, because I was basically already following the plan.
I've lost 16 pounds as of today! Yeah! Want to stay strong through Valentine's!!

HWLLLM,
I also proceed the same way. For packaged food that are more than one serving, I just prepare the whole thing and divide it into servings.... it's much easier and hopefully more accurate.

I have a problem with that too. Unless it's something like baked chicken that would be pretty easy to calculate, I just don't try, but what I do is make two or even three meals out of it. That way, however many calories it had, at least I'm only eating 1/2 or 1/3 as much at a meal as I would have done in the past. Plus, keeping my portion sizes small helps reduce heartburn and reflux.

Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right.

Make every day count and live purposefully, live energetically, live completely.

I thought this part would be easy but with our schedule we eat out on Tuesday and I don't know how to figure on the foods. We are in a small town so we don't have any restaurants that would be on any list with the exception of Pizza Hut and Dairy Queen. Any suggestions or tips?

You're exactly right LKelly! It is all about learning.

One thing I find really helpful is to check online to see if a restaurant has their nutrition info posted before we go out to eat. It takes a little planning, BUT is well worth it because I already know what I am having before we get there. That keeps me from reading through the menu (one of my favorite pasttimes!!) and being tempted.

I just started Stage 2 over the weekend. I was a little scared to take the step up but then just told myself if I wanted to lose more weight and get healthy I'll have to take that next step. Today I went out and bought me a kitchen scale so I could weigh my food and I also started measuring all my food. Although today my daughter and I had a mommy/daughter lunch after her dentist appointment and that caused me to go 400 cals over the 1200-1500 calorie limit. I thought I did very well at the restaraunt (sp?). I didn't eat as much as I use to and I thought that what I ate was healthy but apparently I was wrong because it was just loaded with calories.

Hello, my name is Linda and I have over 100 lbs. to lose. I am a slow starter so I was reluctant about going on the phase 2 but after reading all of your blogs I have decided to start it tomorrow. (about a week late) Hope I have as much success with it as it sounds most of you are having.

I just moved into stage 2 on saturday, I was a little worried I wasn't ready that was why I hadn't started it earlier, I don't know what I was so afraid of though. I actually like measuring things, I was doing a lot of it anyway so it hasn't been to bad yet. I even stayed closer to my calorie range this weekend. I always find it harder on the weekend when the fridge is so accessible.

I started Stage 2 yesterday and found out that I was preety much on when it came to the amounts to measure. I was glad about that. I learned to cook with just eyeballing the amounts so when I measured the food amounts I was closer than I thought. In fact I was able to eat more. I guess this stage won't be as bad as I had first thought.

I just moved to stage 2 the end of last week. I was already measuring most things to make sure my calories were right so that part won't be hard. Staying in my calorie range is going to be hard though. I don't feel I eat too bad but I am always so hungry. I think it is part to do with the weather and being stuck in the house. I am really afraid of not mastering this stage. I have been exercising though so that makes me feel good.

I also always measure everything. I have to, it is part of my obsessive/compulsive nature to know that I am not over serving myself.

I also time my exercise so taht I do not under count how many minutes I am doing.

It isn't that I am being tough on myself, I just want to be sure that I don't let any of it get out of control again. If I eat 3 cookies, I want to be honest about it and make sure it is on my chart. Then I can see exactly why it is taking me longer to get off of a plateau.

I still do this even 8 months later! We just use the measuring cups as serving spoons now and DH automatically grabs the scale for me when setting the table =o)

What I love about measuring everything at home is that I am usually spot on eye-balling portions when I eat out.

Stage 2 is not that bad at all. I am still measuring using cups and the servings provided on the nutrition from the food containers because I am comfortable doing that and it works for me so far. Tracking food definitely helps. Before I was either under-estimating/eating or over-estimating ending up by eating way too many calories!!

Wasn't sure how i would do in stage two but has proved not to be as scary as i thought. The kitchen scales is a good idea as portion control is one big thing i need to improve on. I am already using smaller plates and trying to stop way before i feel full, slower eating, etc. Finally got my scales in and they were not cheap but are very accurate and I can put the display where i can view it. Also wide enough for me to stand on. Siltec(goes to 1000lb) is the brand, can get them at Amazon or livingXL.com. and this site also had a cheaper talking scale.

So far Stage two has been easier than stage one. I had weighed and measured my food in stage one because I can't tell volume by eyeing it. The extra bit of calories helps me stay on track and though I haven't lost any weight on stage two yet (started it last Thurday) I haven't had any sugar lows recently.

If it is to be, it's up to me.

Started Stage 2 this morning and that was after I let the e-mail set in my in box for several days. I was a bit scared to move on since I was doing good in Stage 1. I set my goal to start today and would not let myself talk me out of it. I hope I can do as well on this stage as I have done in stage 1 if not better. I have been watching the amounts closely but now is the time that will really tell if I have been eating the correct amount. My wiegh in is supposed to be tomorrow but I think I will move it to today so that I can get a good since of how I am coming on this stage.

OMG, you guys, I'm so excited!!! This is the funniest thing coming from me. Here I was all nervous about going onto stage 2, having to weigh and measure all this stuff. Afterall, I've never been one of "those" kind of "dieters." I've never checked a portion size in my life, probably because I knew I was all messed up. Well, today, I went out and bought a kitchen scale. It's the neatest thing! As I making dinner, and fixing my plate, I'm weighing everything I put on my plate. I wasn't checking as I go to see if I was over in calories, or whatnot. Well, when I was full, I said, "Self, don't clean your plate, you don't need it." So I went and weighed everything that I DIDN'T eat, and subtracted that from what I'd started with. Nervously, I logged back onto the computer after dinner, and plugged all my stuff into the WONDERFUL nutrition tracker, and OMG - I did such a great job! I ate an honest to God NORMALLY portioned meal, and I feel full and satisfied! I'm simply amazed. This Stage 2 is starting out great! A bonus in all of this - - my forever thin husband who eats more salt than anyone I've ever seen has decided that maybe healthy eating is not an all bad idea and he actually enjoyed a "healthy" dinner tonight! Woo Hoo! Life is good as a Spark! emoticon

And COACH D: I've found several nice digital scales at both Target and WalMart that have a 400 lb capacity and they're in the $25 to $35 range. Hope it helps!

So the beginning of Stage 2 came and I missed it? I have been working more that I was ready for. I do track my nutrition every day and my exercising. I also was a walker but the strength training was never a strong suite. I have incorporated it however, but need to change up (have been doing the same three exercises for 2 weeks!) The last three months I have been traveling so much for work that keeping up with all of this has not been easy. I have made an attempt to track my intake. Some days better than others. I love the website have told anyone I know about it.

I probably don't post as much as I should. I read a lot of the post to see what everyone else is doing. I'm not very consistent with it however. I do log on every day, so I do that at least. Joining Spark has made me more aware of what I do as far as eating, exercising.

The super bowl blew me out. I gain 3 pounds I think that day and have spent this week getting back to where I was before that Sunday. So I lost a week basically of what I was doing.

I have to leave tomorrow for Vegas for a trade show and I know that is going to be a challenge as far as eating and alcohol consumption go. However, I was in Michigan two weeks ago and did very good. Did not gain any weight and paid attention to what I ate. The hardest thing when traveling is the exercise part. Never enough time it seems.

I do love this site! The articles are great, the exercise demos and videos are a bonus. I WILL DO MORE OF THEM!

I am a very competitive person and I think if I get hooked up with someone that will challenge me it will make me work harder. ANY TAKERS? emoticon

I am also surprised at all the support Sparks and the members provides. I began with the food guide pyramid web-site, tracking just about everything -That's a nice site to see how you're doing in the tracking of veggie's, nutrition dept...However, nothing compares to "human touch", support from others who are going through the same thing as I am and have similar goals. - I'm not quite understanding the Stage two thing just yet. I've been playing around with the site since joining two weeks ago...and continue to stumble upon some pretty cool things, this is even so much better than I've ever expected! -I don't believe in diets but I do believe in lifestyle changes, and Sparks kind of takes the "ouch" out of the changing part!

Hello.
When I joined, I did not realize what an incredible motivator this journey was going to be. I have used the WW online tracker in the past, so the nutrition and fitness habit came back quickly. But having all the reading resources and a network of people who are there to support all of us is wonderful. I am still stumbling through some of the features, but have recommended Spark pretty much to everyone I meet and those who take the challenge are saying the same thing.

This week my goal is to start posting more. I don't know what it is, but I write a reply but have a tendency to over analyze and cancel before posting.

Sagentus is a great motivator and your encouragement is helping me get outside my comfort zone and participate. Thank you for your leadership.

If its to be, it is up to ME!

Although it's a drag to be in the same boat LisaK1012, I'm with ya!!!

I have been really good about tracking nutrition, exercise and goals - have been within limits every day, and still I have no good news to report (from the scale that it)!

Congrats to everyone else... I guess I will have to wait another week for things to change for me... I am soooo tired of the 130s...

I have loved being able to come in and log my meals and exercise for the past two weeks or so. But I must admit that I have not been doing the strength excercises, just building up my own cardio by walking longer and different paths.

Also, I was seeing a weight loss for my first two weeks (before I joined this site), then I put a new battery in my scale (my first week here) and 1) I haven't lost any weight and 2) everytime I step on it for the first time it says I weight 280 lbs (I'm 198 actually). So I'm unsure what is the cause of that. I'm about to buy a new scale and try to stay positive by pointing out to myself how I have been able to double my cardio every day and feel much better already.

I need to work on finding new recipes to eat. I am a picky eater and don't have a lot of time to slave in the kitchen - so this will be difficult for me, but I get bored with my fave low fat options eventually and will need to add to my healthy eating options.

Trust the process!

I also love the nutrition tracker, but I also keep a journal so I will have something to show the Dr. when I go back at the end of the month.
Now I just need to find an inexpensive scale that goes up high enough for me(400+).

I've been recording what I eat, measuring portions and trying to stay within calorie limits from the beginning.--What was I supposed to be doing? So far, stage 2 is the same as stage 1. Maybe the team leader can give me some advice.

Popcorn - Try the Curves popcorn. Pretty good.

I'm finding that I haven't been eating enough food. I didn't realize how little food I was eating in a day. I've also been eating low or nonfat foods for so many years, that I didn't know you needed fat in your diet. Now I'm eating more cottage cheese. Love it with blueberries.

I'm also tracking my calcium. I need that for my osteoporosis.

I've lost 3 lbs so far.

I have bought a scale and definitely eat smaller portion sizes. When we go out I never finish the portions they give you (I either take it home or my husband and I share an entree--I noticed at some restaurants they charge extra). We came from Japan (lived there for 3 years) where the portion sizes are much smaller so we were overwhelmed with the amount of food they serve you.

I need to explore the nutrition tracker again I didn't know you could track other things with it. I love popcorn too (I like it popped the old fashioned way but I don't use hardly any oil). I have learned not to asked for buttered popcorn at the movies and always get the smallest bag (the last time I asked for butter it made me sick so my tastes are definitely changing!)

I hear you guys! It weas nothing for me to down a 16oz. steak with all the trimmings!

But, since I am eating healthier, the smaller portion really is just fine.

I had trouble getting to the minimum in the beginning too, which kind of blew my mind! Make sure you do eat the minimum each day though, so you don't slow your metabolism.

Since I've started I've been paying much more attention to portion size.

We're having steak tonight, and normally I could eat almost a whole steak, tonight it's getting cut to a 1/4 of that.

It's funny that combined with exercise and eating all the whole grains fruits and veggies, it's hard to get the calories I need. Who would of thought I'd have trouble even reaching 1200 calories somedays.

I have really started watching my portion sizes. Last night my boyfriend made steak on the grill (in the middle of a blizzard- he's a diehard) and I was amazed when I cut my steak to the size of a deck of cards how small it was compared to what I would normally eat!! It is something I'll be sure to pay attention to more closely!

KWB170 - Don't you love how "real life" just hits when you have better plans?! Hang in there! Stage 2 is the next Spark Stage. You will be getting an email about it this week (based on the actual date you started SP). The Fast Break stage (the first 2 weeks) really helps you get around the site and gets you used to using the tools available. Stage 2 is where the real work starts, BUT it's a very gradual and slow process. In week 1, you will focus on measuring your food so that you can get a feel for what a REAL portion size is.

And yes, friends - I LOVE the Orville Redenbacher 94% fat free brand. It's the best nutrition-wise (read lowest in calories and fat) that I have been able to find in my area. Luckily Costco sells it in big boxes! emoticon

Morning!
I am a WW so this stage is pretty easy as I'm already weighing and measuring everything. It is a good step though, because knowing your portion sizes is so important.
I love the nutrition tracker, except that darn potassium and magnesium. I have yet to eat my RDA of those two. Sure hope my multi vitamin is getting it in!

Orville Reddenbauker (is that how you spell it?) 94% fat free is pretty good, and they have the small portion size bags. For cereal I've been using a small glass bowl from IKEA, Like the toddler bowl, a cup of cereal fills it up so you feel like you're getting a big portion.

I absolutely love popcorn - movie theatre popcorn with "layered butter" - good thing I rarely go to the movies - I have yet to find a microwave popcorn that I really like, so I don't generally make it at home, which is a good thing, but I agree about the salt thing - I'd take salty over sweet any day -

emoticon Yup - that's me. I admit I am a "popcorn-a-holic!" But instead of consuming an ENTIRE bag of SmartFood (how's that for an oxymoron?!?!) every night like I used to, I now eat a small bag of low-fat microwave popcorn - and I of course, always build it into my calories!

If you put a chocolate covered cheesecake or a bag of salty snacks in front of me, I'd mow you down to get to the salty stuff first!

Lvestrand, a friend of mine who really LOVES popcorn tried Weight Watchers. She said the reason she liked Weight Watchers was because popcorn had a low point count. So instead of eating from all the major food groups, she would save up her points so that she could eat popcorn all night. She eventually became frustrated with not losing weight and gave up on it.

Love the nutrition tracker. I was previously on weight watchers and did the points thing but it was not an accurate picture of what I was eating. Many people on WW try to get as much "junk" in as they can and still stay within their points. I was still eating a ton of carbs but was in my points range still. This gives me the real picture of where my calories are coming from!

I'm starting to notice commercials. I especially get a kick out of the cereal commercials that say, "Make it a part of your balanced daily breakfast," (or something like that) and then they show a big bowl of cereal, a glass of orange juice, NO glass of milk, and two pieces of toast. And it leaves me wondering: are the makers trying to convince me that I'm suppose to put a full serving of milk (1 cup) in with 2/3 cup of cereal or are they trying to convince me to blow off the serving suggestion and just eat all the cereal I want so I can buy more cereal? And what's the toast for? Isn't cereal considered to be a grain? Do I put the toast in with the cereal?

That's a great idea to use smaller plates, I have started to use my lunchen plates instead of dinner plates so I don't see so much empty space and feel like I'm being cheated! I just started Stage 2 today and am excited about it! I also have not done well with my fitness goals, but finally got to the gym on Saturday and have plans to go tonight after work!

I too like the nutrition tracker. I've added in sodium, iron and calcium. I addition to using measuring cups I have started using my daughters "toddler" dishes. You know the little bowls/plates their food goes in? Anyway a cup of cereal looks overflowing in a bowl so I feel like I'm getting a huge portion. Same thing with eating on a smaller plate...the right amount of food takes up the whole plate as where a regular dinner plate has ample room for me to "LOAD UP".

I used weight watchers a couple years ago and its very similar. I like this better though. For me, I need to see and record what I am eating, drinking, and how many calories my workouts burn to actually feel like I am making any progress. I have done pretty good guest-imating calories and staying within the guidelines. If I don't eat enough I feel really tired, so I always make sure I eat near the top end of the calorie range if not slightly over. I do have 2 little kiddos I chase around all day, so I am more active then some.

You're doing GREAT!

The tracker is pretty cool, and I especially like the feature where you can track other nutrients. I watch my fiber (I struggle to get it high enough) and my sodium (I struggle to keep it low enough!) and have started tracking calcium, too.

I love the tracker, but not for the calorie portion, because I had used a different site for that about 6 months ago (for my daughter) so I had an idea of what we were eating. I started monitoring the little things, like sodium and iron (I tend to be iron deficient)... I was also measuring, with cups and spoons- so I think this first phase of stage 2 won't be too bad. I did go out yesterday and by a kitchen scale though. I know I need a better idea of weight on meats. Especially since when I buy a pound of chicken and then cut off all the fat and stuff, it's nice to know how much I am really using. So, well see how that goes...

I have used weight watchers in the past, so I know how to measure! I'm glad I am getting back to it. When you measure you can really see how much you should be eating! I know I overeat in helpings a lot!

I love the nutrition tracker. I was eating way too much food before I started using it. When I started tracking my food and saw the amount of food for my calories, I realized that I had just eaten whatever with no thought about how much. I am trying to think about every thing that I eat and make better choices.

thanks sagentus! I now know that i can occasionally (once every 2/3 months) have a mcChicken burger at mcD''s w/out too much guilt because it has 360 calories instead of the 500 i thought it was because of the deep fried patty... but i will DEFINITELY stay away from the fries!!!! which has way more calories than the burger itself!!! yikes!

but i dont eat at most of the restaurants on the resource page. when i do eat out, i go for Chinese or Vietnamese food, so i'l just have to improvise and pick and choose the ingredients that i end up eating

emoticon Ladies!

And after measuring everything this week, you will learn what real portion sizes look like so that it will not be as difficult when you're out and about (or just serving up dinner at home!).

Syl, there is a great index of links to nutrition info for restaurants here: www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutriti

Hopefully that will help you out a bit.

yes i do love the nutrition tracker! it's awesome! and the only challenges that i have is finding the calorie/nutritional numbers for eating out. I usually improvise and just add what i've eaten on my plate and guestimate how much the portion was.... but i'm afraid i'll under estimate and end up over eating.... the only good thing is that i don't eat out that much anymore and saving more money :D

I've lost a pound by staying within the calorie count and exercising moderately!! so i'm making progress!!!

I started measuring my food according to the serving sizes listed on the package. It was a real eye opener. I had a cup of cereal this morning. Judging by what was in my cereal bowl, I must have been eating triple the normal serving size. Sort of explains how I got to this point. I'm going to measure everything from now on.

Many of you are now moving into Stage Two of your Spark Diet. Stage Two is where you really start to build those healthy lifestyle habits!

During the Fast Break, you learned how to use the nutrition tracker. Don't you love that thing?! How shocking was seeing your actual food intake? I know it really was a slap in the face for me!

This week, you'll be striving to stay in your calorie range and watching your portion sizes. Be sure to actually follow the actions sparked in this stage. Get out those measuring cups! It really works!

Let the team know how you are doing with this stage. Any challenges? Let's do this TOGETHER!
