My friend in Indiana lost her phone and computer to lightening a few days ago. What a mess.

Good to get some gardening in.

Sorry to have been away from the team for a week +. I lost my internet in a big lightening storm; my router got fried. Anyway I got the new router and am FINALLY reconnected. In the meantime, I enjoyed gardening and working on projects at home. And I started my new pen and ink drawing class, very fun.

I want to go through the old Mckenzie Pass highway. I graduated from high school from South Eugene High. I know it will be a lot of driving that day but going from the high desert through the mountians and into Willamette Valley I think would be worth the time.

Sounds like an ambitious trip, Jane! On the basic itinerary -- do you have something to do in Eugene? If not, Chemult and the turn off to Crater Lake are a straight shot from Bend down Highway 97 (Chemult is about 70 miles south on Hwy 97; Eugene would add 260 additional miles for the round trip).

You probably know many of the destinations. I love the Columbia gorge, and always stop at waterfalls (Multnomah, Horsetail, etc). I like to visit Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood (have a hot cocoa in the bar, or lunch in the restaurant). I love Crater Lake, and like getting out at the viewpoints. It is can be very cold at both Crater Lake and Mt Hood, so bring a jacket.

Here is the basic plan. Leave Portland and go up the Columbia Gorge to the Dalles and return to Hood River for the night. From Hood River go to Bend taking time to check out Mt. Hood. Bend through Sisters to Eugene and on to Chemult. Chemult to Roseburg after seeing Crater Lake. Roseburg to Coos Bay. Coos Bay to Florence. Florence to Astoria. Astoria to Portland with a stop for a family Reunion just outside Portand. We plan to leave July 6th and get back to Portland July 13th.

Is that enough of a whirlwind trip? My friend has not really seen Oregon except to drive through on the way to Washington. A few places we will spend extra time in and others breeze through. Sites along those paths would be good information.

Jane

Jane your Oregon trip sounds wonderful. I have not been to Bend yet but love the western side of Oregon.

Sacramento for last weekend and the California poppies were everywhere. It is a city filled with beautiful trees and the Spring weather is perfect.

Good morning! Tomorrow starts spring break. But I'm still gonna be busy. Thursday I'll be leaving for Georgia to pick up my DD and grandkids and bringing them back home. Not looking forward to the long drive, but I've got a hotel waiting for me half way each way. It'll be a little more chaotic but that's family for you.

Jane I would love to meet you when you are here with your friend! If you want to get together, I can send you a SparkMail with my phone # and e-mail contact information.

The old scenic MacKenzie highway should be reopened by July; they closed it when the wildfires were really bad. Now that it is spring they are removing snow and downed trees.

I am going to be in Bend the second week of July. A friend and I will be seeing the sights of Oregon. She has driven through Oregon from California to Washington before but did not really see the variety of the state. I am not real knowledgeable about a lot of it but knowledgeable enough to know what I want to see, like the McKenzie Pass.

I leave very early tomorrow morning for Spain and Portugal. Very excited! It is a package tour, but we will have free time also to explore. I probably won't be back on the internet until I am home again. My goal is to eat healthy and stay active while I am traveling -- but I DO want to enjoy the local specialties. I'm most familiar with paella and sangria, but of course there is lots more to sample! Luckily my traveling companion likes to share meals, and enjoys walking

I got several errands done today. I got the tube for the pictures I am sending to my son and picked up the pictures. I did not pay to have the pictures taken out of the frames because I gave two of the frames to her but kept one for a picture I have here. Finally found a split "jack" for my telephone line. And finally paid some bills.

It's snowing again. I am taking my neighbor and his wife out to dinner; he kindly brought his snow blower over during the big storm and cleared my driveway twice. I wish I weren't going out tonight; I don't much like to drive in the snow at night. Oh well that's winter here in Central Oregon. I'm REALLY looking forward to being in Portugal and Spain next week!

Thank you all for your encouragement.

Alison, my friends who moved to Bend last summer have posted pictures of the snow in Bend. I am sure they will be on the slopes as soon as the weather changes. They also reported that Eugene is getting a lot of snow and has set a record.

Good to hear from you Tiffa. Thank you for your encouragement.

Stay safe and dry everyone.

Jane, congratulations on being clear from the bladder cancer!! WOO HOO! And I am glad the typhoon bypassed your location.

I am happy that my street was finally plowed. Jane, the city plows the major thoroughfares and through streets. I live on a cul-de-sac with about 32 homes. The city hires independent contractors to plow the little side streets, but it took them four days to get here. You are right to be concerned about ambulances; in the last major storm one of my friends was desperate waiting for an ambulance for her husband. It took them 4 hours to get to her.

We need the snow in the mountains. But I am ready for it to STOP here!

I saw the urologist today and my bladder is clear! I will go back to her in three months to make sure it stays that way. I had been to the Cancer Center before I saw the urologist and was told that if the bladder was clear then no more treatments. I will go to the Cancer Center on March 11th to confirm everything but it is just a formality at this time. Hallelujah!

I want to thank those of you on this team who have been so supportive of me over the last several months. I have really appreciated your prayers and encouragement.

Shell, glad someone was able to shovel your snow.

Alison, I do understand the city not plowing the side streets. I am sure they would get an ambulance to everyone in an emergency. I am sure Oregon needs the snow for the melt off during the summer. My friends who moved there to ski are delighted.

Wupit, which means butterfly in Cantonese, is now northwest of Guam and heading into more ocean. It became a super typhoon before it was away from us but we only had tropical storm winds below 90 mph. It was also far enough away from the Northern Marianas that Rota, Tinian and Saipan did not receive any damaging winds of which I am very thankful. Hopefully it will dissipate before it reaches any other land or island.

Stay warm and dry everyone.

Jane

We are expecting a big snow storm tonight, and I feel lucky that I will get a break from shoveling too! The young man in the rental home down the road told me he was laid off and would shovel my driveway for a very reasonable rate. I'm thrilled.

Jane I will be mostly staying home too, but for a different reason!! (City doesn't plow our little side roads until a few days after the storm, and if it is deep enough I get high-centered)

I actually was able to skip out on shoveling this week, as a guy came by with a shovel hoping to earn a bit of money and I actually had cash on hand (something I rarely do.) Of course, my weight has crept up with less activity - at least at school, I have long halls to tromp through with my students!

If the power goes off or the internet goes down I will be okay as my house is very secure and I have closed and locked the shutters. The storm is to go south of us and then up the western side so even Rota is threatened and that island got hit with a storm before Saipan and Tinian.

I hope you are counting shoveling snow as exercise as it is hard physical work.

I am off the low potassium diet of which I am very thankful. I have been put back on lasix so will need to increase the potassium for that. I went to get bananas yesterday and the store was out. Bummer

Shelley your project sounds like more fun than mine! I have to re-hook up my computer (the surge protector got fried) and then do my taxes. Iíll. Reward myself with some time to finish a painting.

Shoveling snow is hard work. I think I shoveled almost daily in the past couple of weeks.

I'm off from school this week, so I can be a little more regular in Sparking. I haven't been doing "exercise" as regularly - mainly because I never know when I'm going to need that energy to SHOVEL.
I was actually able to sleep in till 7:30 this morning! Not that Rosie, my cat, didn't TRY to get me up, tickling my face with her whiskers as she'd head-butt me. Anyway, I'm Sparking before I get to work on assorted projects mainly having to do with my ceramic animals.

Alison, I had jury duty while I was still teaching. I had to call in and if called, call the school secretary for a substitute teacher, write a lesson plan and deliver it to school before going to court to wait... I finally got excused because my back gave out on me after actually sitting on a court case. I spent most of Easter break on my back and having a friend taking me to the chiropractor. It was horrific.

Jane, I hope the dietary change helps with your potassium. My friend who had chemo found that her potassium levels were WAY off (but maybe that was due to the stomach issues she was having from her cancer).

I had fun on my vacation; I did easy skiing on the meadow trails, and snow shoed with my friends. I'm on call for jury duty for the next two week; we have to call in each night to see if they need us. It is a little frustrating to not be able to plan any activities during the day.

Shell, I am sure the problem I had was due to what has been going on with me for a couple of months. I have had several bouts of the flu, an urinary track infection and then chemotherapy mixed in. Between those three and the meds to "fix" things my potassium got out of whack somehow.

I will not the medication and ask about it if things get bad again.

Thank you,

Jane

Jane, a friend of mine has had problems with high potassium and has been on a relatively new med to help control it - so new in fact that the company has used her for advertisements and has sent her hither and yon all expenses paid! For instance, she recently went to California - and her son lives there, so she gets to visit him for free! Potassium is one of those things that are very touchy - too much or too little can kill ya!

Iím leaving for a ski/snowshoe vacation in Washingtonís Methow Valley. With my bad knees, Iíll be mostly snow shoeing, with some easy Nordic skiing. We should be getting fresh snow. Unlike the polar vortex in the central US, it is unseasonably warm and low snowpack here in the Northwast.

Jane, glad you are feeling better. Shelley, thanks for the Peru advice

Hey, all! Kaliswalker, I have indeed been to Peru numerous times (this coming summer will make my 14th trip). I taught myself Spanish, using a textbook my Puerto Rican stepmother gave me, writing letters in Spanish to the missionary church in Iquitos that my church supported, visiting bilingual churches and even Spanish speaking churches in my own city. I have a bilingual Bible, and being familiar with it in my first language made it easier to pick things up in the second. Learning the Spanish version of the songs that I knew from church also helped Bring a dictionary with you, but don't be afraid to use what you have. The people are very pleased that you at least try. And I have had a lot of young folks want to practice their English on me!

February is a good time of year to go to Machu Picchu. I recommend getting the pills for altitude - Cuzco is really up there. In Lima, you may enjoy Parque de las Leyendas, a huge zoo that features flora and fauna from the 3 regions - coast, mountain, and jungle. I am partial to the jungle!
Are you going with a group? It's not a good idea for a "gringa" to be going it alone - Lima is a high-crime area, like any huge city. My friends and family never let me go solo. And I have never had any problems.

I went to Southeast Asia in November 2018 for 3 1/2 weeks and had a fabulous time. I visited Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. The scenery was beautiful particularly in Laos and I saw lots of Temples and Buddhas including Angkor Wat. The food was amazing too. I stayed away from deep fried stuff and I came back home and lost over 3 lbs! Unfortunately while flying home I caught a cold and came home sick. At least while I was travelling I was fine so I am thankful for that. I may have picked up a bug somehow. However it was an amazing trip and worth the long haul to get there and back.

Hello fellow travelers!
I am new to the team but looove to travel, even vicariously through your travels!
In 2018 we went to South America for two weeks...two days in Santiago, Chile, three days in the wine region of Mendoza for the best Malbec on earth (one server told me they save the best for themselves and send the rest to us) and seven days in Buenos Aires, Argentina ...it was fabulous...we bused over the Andes from Santiago to Mendoza and that was breathtaking.
We had amazing and inexpensive food, wine and lodging everywhere and our rudimentary Spanish was enough to get us by.
In November we went to Madrid for a week (had been there for ten days in 2017, for the second time) as my husband found a discounted for miles flight and it was coolish but lovely.
We are happily retired and my dear man plays the credit card game to accumulate points and we have been able to take one or two nice trips every year for the last ten years or so...trying to do it while we can as we are 66 and 69.
This year we are flying to Milan April 9th and spending two weeks exploring northern Italy and heading over to Croatia and Slovenia on our own...our preferred way to travel.
Happy travels!
Elizabeth

Hello lovelies,

I went to Puero Vallarta, Mexico last year but cancelled my trip to Italy. I bought a motorcycle instead. I used to ride and had the itch again. I had to decide one or the other because I only had so much money saved up. The motorcycle won in my heart so I went that direction.

This year I am going to Cozumel, Mexico and to South Africa. Should be an exciting travel year!

I canít wait to read about all of your adventures!!!

I had a good travel year in 2018. We took two Rick Steves tours. The first was in late February to Sicily. The scenery, the history and the food were all spectacular. In late September we did the Villages of Southern England tour. It started in Canterbury and went out to Cornwall then ended in Bath. Had a great time traveling with friends we made on prior trips.
Now in 2019, we are in Charleston, SC for a couple of months to escape New England winter. Great walking city.
Happy New Year and happy travels to all!

Happy New Year! I am learning Spanish on Duolingo, on day 65 or so. My plan is to travel to Peru in Feb. Any suggestions for learning more Spanish or travel in South America?

BTW I am doing Duolingo for free. The first week there was a lot of advertising about getting a paid membership. I ignored and continued to come back daily, now all I get is a little advertising from a local bank.
