Traveling resthome helper and finishing extra education to work with very extreme dement elderly whom live in own homes.. I also work at a alcohol center for people whom have damaged their selfs beyond repair and frozen out by family, network and don't fit ito regular resthomes because of they way they are they are 50 plus and up..
Some are extreme people in that they have never taken a bath in years-they can't see they need help and we have to win their confidence to get anywhere. Sometimes local authorities call us in to try to make them understand they may loss their home because of the conditions and neighbours complaining about the smell... As for hospital, doctors and nurses- alot of them are scared to death of them.

Hello everyone! I am currently a 3rd year medical student and I am just finishing up my psychiatry clerkship. I love pediatrics with a passion, so that is definitely where I will end up in some form. I am on a journey to lose the last 10-15 lbs to get me down to my goal weight. So far it is going well. This team is so motivational to see that other people in similarly demanding careers can balance that with a healthy lifestyle :) emoticon

I am a 2nd year medical student grinding out the studying. Step 1 of boards to be taken in June! :o

I'm thinking rural family medicine as my specialty but we shall see how that may/may not change once I get into clerkships.

I'm finding it very hard to stay motivated and consistent on my journey especially when I see no changes...grrr

Keep chugging fellow Meds!

Hi everyone! I'm a third year optometry student in the middle of one of my last midterm weeks ever. Luckily only have two exams this week instead of 8 like last semester. :) I've been in this group for awhile, but haven't really been super motivated to really lose my weight until recently. Have a good feeling this time though!

Hi All,
Finished my M.A. externship a couple of weeks ago, and then started my phlebotomy externship. Will finish in a couple of days, and then back to the old school grind. I'm going back for my Bachelor's in Health Care Management.

Hi All!
I'm Jen, a second year dental student.
Although I'm already enjoying the support of other SparkTeams, I'm so glad to have found a group for people like me! Many of us are going through the same things and its hard for others to understand. They think - "oh, I work more hours than you go to school" but they don't realize the hours we put in studying after class or the extra pressure we put on ourselves to learn as much material as possible.
Good luck to everyone in all aspects - academically or health goal oriented!
I'm excited to share this journey :)

Hi all --

I have been a pediatric cardiologist for nearly 15 years now. I am glad to be done with my training - unlike many of you. But the long hours are worth it! Now I am a late-in-life mom, having kids at 39, 40, and 42, so I need to get in better shape to keep up with them and to help stick around for longer. I have had a lifelong antipathy toward exercise, so I am working to change that, and to lose the last stubborn 10-15 pounds of weight I have added after having my kids.

Good luck to everyone in meeting their goals!

Hi all,
I'm a nurse midwife working in northern California, but soon to be (in 4 months) hitting the road with the hubbie and little puppy to journey around the U.S. and Canada for a year in our tiny Toyota van. I plan to work every few months for a couple of weeks to keep up on births.

I really like this forum because I think as healthcare professionals the long hours and crazy shifts can make weight loss even more challenging and it is helpful to know that we're not struggling alone- others face similar obstacles.

Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far they can go.

There is only so much one can compromise .

Hi Everyone,
Just a quick update. Finish *Brick and Mortar* in 7 weeks (but who's counting?), and then externship. I'll be sitting NCCT's for both MA and phlebotomy.

Our phlebotomy teacher is teaching a new program MLA, which is a Medical Lab Assistant. I'm considering taking the class (another certificate and more pay) but I'm not sure.

I'm open to your thoughts.

I'm a post-bacc graduate. My original degree was in graphic design. I worked as an independent designer for 12 years developing websites and corporate identity systems. Between the economy tanking and career burnout I decided to pursue a medical career (something I had always secretly wanted to do). An accumulation of life circumstances allowed for me to do it. I'm currently enrolled at Montana State University fulfilling science requirements for dental school. I love being back in school, the courses I'm taking, and the volunteer work with the local smiles program and very excited to get into dental school. But like many who have been through the trials and tribulations of getting into professional school; studies can be both stressful and taxing. Unlike many of my peers pursuing other types of degrees, I live in the library and study around the clock when I'm not working. That's why I joined this forum...as a reminder I'm not alone. I look forward to this team as a means of support and inspiration from those who are a similar place in their journey as well as those already working in the medical field.

Starting medical school in a week. I have no idea what area I'm headed into, but I'm hoping to go the internal medicine/primary care route...or ob-gyn...or ER....in other words, I have no idea!

Gained a bunch during senior year with application stress, and I'm ready to get into a routine as early as possible.

So 'hello' everyone!

Just joined the team. I started out in the LVN/LPN program in late 2010, but due to personal issues decided to withdraw. That was on a Wednesday, and on Thursday, on another campus much closer to home, I enrolled in the MA program.

I'm due to externship in August of this year. But in the mean time I'm starting a Plebotomy course at an entirely different school, because they don't offer it at Charter College where I'm currently attending.

Forgot to mention, you CAN teach an *old* dog new tricks. I am proud to say that at the advanced age of 66, I am the oldest student on campus. emoticon

Also, I'd like to know what a PGY1 and PGY2 are, thanks.

I'm a 4th year dietetics student slated fr graduation after this summer. I have one more year left in the Army so, I'm not looking at internships until 2013. I'm working on the GRE and some additional certifications, RDT and wellness counselor, so that I can at least work if I don't get matched; there's a lot more students than internships right now. I'm slated as an honor grad but, you never know what's going to happen.

I am and have been a lowly RN for 32 years. I specialize in Vascular Access primarly in PICC placements at present. At some point I have worked in almost all critical areas. I enjoy what I do and only hope that I can continue to do it for some time. I am also learning a second language (Spanish) and may consider working in some arena of public health in the future.

Well you certainly seem to have thought your career change through and have some compelling reasons why you want to do it. Good luck!

Hi Nora,

There are a lot of reasons. The first question is why did I study veterinary medicine rather than human medicine in the first place - the answer to that is probably best described as immaturity. In Australia (where I'm from and studied), both medicine and veterinary medicine are direct entry degrees (bachelor's degrees), you apply straight from school. I was only 16 and had to decide what I wanted to do, probably before I was ready to make that choice. I live in New Zealand now, but the system here is quite similar.

I wanted a career that involved helping people and I cared about fighting injustice, I like science and the opportunity to constantly learn new things and improve my knowledge and skills. My family were strongly pushing me to do medicine (my father is a doctor, my grandfather is a doctor, my uncle is a doctor...) In a fit of teenage rebellion, I guess, I decided I didn't want to do what everyone was telling me to do, so I applied for veterinary medicine instead.

I enjoyed veterinary practice, and a lot of it is about working with and helping people, as well as animals - but I am finding that I have to make too many compromises to my personal standards in veterinary practice. It's hard to practice good medicine when the animal's owner doesn't want to/can't afford to bring it to see you in the first place, let alone spend money on diagnostic work up and treatment. So I feel that I'm not using my skills, and I'm not achieving my aim, which is to help people (and animals). And when people can afford diagnosis and treatment, with farm animals the help I provide is to the business and its profits, and it often comes at the expense of the interests of the animals, from my perspective, which doesn't sit well with me. And with companion animals, people treat them as accessories or toys. I am not willing to work in an industry where I can be asked to euthanise a healthy animal because it has become inconvenient to someone, and where a large part of my job is onselling expensive pet foods to boost the bottom line, rather than working towards making a difference to the quality of life of my clients and patients.

I tried moving out of clinical work into veterinary public health (which is like human public health - working at the population level rather than the individual animal level), because I hoped that would allow me to work more towards my aims of helping people and animals, and took some further qualifications in epidemiology. The study and work has been interesting (and has allowed me to spend some time interacting with human public health units), but I really miss clinical work, and being able to work with someone one-on-one to help make a difference to their situation - as well as the challenge of working out an individual diagnostic and treatment plan.

So, I want to do clinical work and I would like to do it with people. I suspect if I'd been able to choose when I was a little more mature, I would have chosen medicine in the first place - but I think my experiences to date would help me be a good doctor. I think if I were accepted to medical school, I would like to study towards becoming an infectious diseases physician (zoonotic diseases would be an obvious area for me), or maybe sexual health, or anaesthetics (which I really enjoy) or even pediatrics (I've discovered from talking with a pediatrician that there are surprising similarities in approach to diagnosis and treatment between pediatric practice and veterinary practice, except pediatric practice you actually have the ability to do diagnostics rather than treating blindly).

At least in this country, human medicine has a reasonably well resourced publicly funded safety net, so if people need diagnostics and treatment, there is a reasonable standard of care available. While there are always ethical dilemmas and budgets to meet and resources to allocate, you can do SOMETHING other than kill the person.

Another reason I didn't initially choose medicine is that my father and grandfather and uncle are all workaholics. Even on their days off, they still didn't do anything much but work, and I didn't want to live like that - and I thought that was how all doctors lived. Having had a pretty intensive on-duty schedule as a veterinarian, and having met and spoken to other doctors, I've realised that my family are not typical. Yes, medicine (like veterinary medicine) requires an extraordinary commitment, and it can be difficult to get work-life balance. But if you want it, it's there to be had (I've done it before), and I don't need to fear living like my dad. And because I've worked in a profession with similar stresses (long hours, little support sometimes, life or death decisions, duty rosters that mean you miss special family occasions, stressed and angry patients/clients, grieving owners and families, having to deliver bad news and/or make the decision to end treatment/euthanise, animals that died when you didn't expect them to, etc) I know that I can deal with all of those things in a compassionate way.

That seems like a very long winded answer, but my reasons are complex, with a lot of nuances and sub-reasons within. I have no idea if the medical school here in New Zealand will find it a convincing set of reasons. There are only 20 places (out of 250) for students making a career change, and I'm worried they might think I'm too old (I'm 30 now). Also, I'm worried that they will be prejudiced against me because I'm a veterinarian. The medical profession here doesn't seem to have a lot of love for veterinarians. You can also only apply once as a career change person - If I don't get selected the first time I apply, that's it for that school. I'd have to apply overseas (in Australia) to a different school, which I'd prefer not to do, as we're settled here - but if that's what it takes, that's what I'll do.

What do you think? Do I have a fighting chance?

WOW PHRASER! That would be a big career change. I had a friend who started vet school the same year I started med school. Our curriculum's were very similar for the first two years, especially the first year. You would at the very least be comfortable with the material. What is prompting you to want to make this change?

I'm a veterinarian. The qual system is different, but I have done my first boards exam (Epidemiology/Public Health) and been graduated 8 years.

However, I'm seriously considering applying for medical school this year. Does anyone know anyone who has done that kind of career change? I have some questions...
