A nutrionist helped me to see that I eat when I am:
* hungry
* thirsty
* angry
* scared
* lonely
* sleepy

I have 1 response to 6 different situations! So now I am trying to learn the difference, so my response can make more sense. For example, when I am sleepy, I should go to bed! Yes, for me a walk takes care of stress better than eating, and I agree, you don't really enjoy food eaten as food-instead-of-feeling. But I only notice that after the cookies are eaten!

Emotional eating always ends up making me feel worse--every time. I try to recognize the anxious feeling in my gut and take a walk, play with my son, etc...anything that is active and positive. When dealing with a difficult or demanding parishioner, I follow that experience by visiting an uplifting and encouraging church member--it may be a little selfish, but it helps too! After all, I believe we are all priests to one another...

Peace, Todd

I am with you all on this. When my application for health insurance was denied because of my height/weight proportion, all I wanted to do was eat. A few days later when I calmed down I joined Spark People. I am feeling pretty good about things now, but I have to call the insurance company tomorrow. I might have to put together a veggie tray. Maybe the crunch will fight the frustration instead of a bag of chips.

The worst part about eating when I'm mad is that don't actually enjoy the food!

I eat when I am mad, stressed, frustrated, over whelmed, or tired. I'm trying to work on this and to find alternative activities.

I eat when I'm mad. I walk and exercise which helps. Popcorn is a good thing to eat. Its my go to food this time of the year.

This thread made me think about the reason underneath my feelings / eating when I'm mad. I wonder if it's really that I don't feel heard, or if I'm feeling exhausted by my needs not being met ( church/ others take precedence or whatever). So maybe it's "same song, second verse" as to why I overeat in the first place- stress, overwork and not prioritizing self-care.

Yes, when I'm angry or upset - emotionally turbulent, I guess. Funny, while I think I've always realized this, I don't know that I've ever put it in words.

Not when I'm angry so much as when I'm BORED or feeling anxious. Crocheting or getting involved in a good book (brain candy) helps.

Yes, I do eat when I am mad. Then I get mad that I'm eating because I'm mad. And then...well...you know the rest.

Sometimes I heed the voice in my head telling me to step away. Sometimes I don't.

I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made!

I find myself doing the same thing. I do eat when angry. I'm going to have to find something else to calm me down.

I eat when I get mad - I have tried making sure I exercise, or at least get some place where food is not available. I used to go hang out at Barnes and Noble to get away from my husband when I got mad at him, but then I would eat a slice of cheesecake. Now I go read at the library (if it's open) if I can't go for a walk.

In an effort to examine exactly when it is that I eat A LOT, I am discovering that I am prone to eat when I'm mad. Huh. Anyone else do the same? I tried walking as an alternative today - it worked! At least until I got home and was still mad - now my popcorn popper is calling my name...
