Hi Everyone!
Do any of you have any good ideas of where I can post my daughters mare for sale. I tried a few sites, but only seem to get scammers. At this point I'd almost give her away to a good home (board on two is rough and my daughter will have nothing to do with her now).
Its been a while since I talked about her, but she's the black QH we bought last fall at the Eastern Auction for my daughter who we now believed had been drugged to mask an old withers injury. We had thought about trying to teach her to pull a cart, but without my DD wanting to go out with me, I'm thinking it would be better to sale her as a broodmare, but all I get is scammers. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Steph

CUTTINABBY, wishing you well with all your upcoming deliveries! Keep us posted on your upcoming arrivals. How miserable to still be getting snow!

Finally got my first ride in on Rose. We (she!) sometimes have mounting issues since her back injury, but she did great with that, too. It was only 20 minutes up and down the road and in the neighboring field, but it's a START. Woo hoo!

I hope everyone has a great day. The weather here is suppose to be rain. We haven't seen any and the sun is out.

Best wishes to you all.

Sorry to hear of your rainy weather HJ.We could trade...we've had about 4 inches of snow!!We checked our momma cows and no new babies today thank goodness. Then I saw my mare close to the fence so I wanted to take a look at her and how she was progressing in the bagging up department .
Holy Cow!!
The mad scurry was on to move her to a pasture away from the geldings. Not only is she bagged up she is waxed up too !We caught a couple of other mares to keep her company and keep the coyotes away when she foals .Now I'm expecting a foal within the next week or ten days.I never dreamed she was THAT close!Good thing I looked !

Morning All,

Today the weather here in Maine is good. This morning we had a few showers, but that was OK. The temperature stayed up a little. It was 53 around 6 am. I think we are suppose to get some more later on.

I hope you all have a wonderful day and hopefully you will be able to ride.

Best wishes to you all.

I'm so sorry for you extra snow - that happened here last week and it wasn't fun for us either - but we did get into the 80's today - no ride tho - had such a busy day already planned so had to stick to the plan - but tomorrow I'm hoping it will stay nice - however, right now we are getting soaking rain! I hope it is only overnight and tomorrow i will be able to get in a ride!

Unfortunately Dot this can be quite nasty. They develope lumps that are full of pus and break open and drain. They are usually located in the throat area but can be located all over the body. The worst is when they develope the lumps inside the body and they break open .They can cause a horse to die.I hope if our horses get strangles it's just mild .They haven't been exposed to this before.

Well you know the gut feeling I was mentioning ...I wish it had told me this horse we brought home to try out had be exposed to strangles!!!!I notice last Friday he seemed to be gaunt but I figured it was due to the change in water .Tuesday I noticed he had a gummy nostril, yesterday he had yellow gobs of snot leaking from it .Called the owner and she already had three horses sick.We took him back home so if he breaks out he can do it there. Now I guess we watch and wait and disinfect the trailer, the stall, the waterer, and scrape out the corral he was in .Sure glad we kept him isolated as long as we did .I hate bringing new horses home .
On the brighter side my mare is starting to bag up so a little baby should show up by the end of May!

my 2 are funny the mare likes to lead and walks so fast but will stop and wait for him to catch up when she feels he has fallen too far behind. but he rules the yard and will hord the hay until he feels she is deserving of it - haha she runs around and tries to steal it from him - I personally think it is all a game to them both - he is trying to keep it from her and she is happy to try to steal it from him - if I move the hay so they each have thier own location they still do it at each pile. . .they are funny.

Ha, ha, I feel so LUCKY that my horse seems to dislike every other horse she's ever met. When I first got her they were just weaning off her foal and she was even glad to see the end of her own baby girl!

So for all of Pick's problems, I don't think this'll be one of them, as she's more than happy to leave them all behind (I'm pretty sure she's got a superiority complex of some sort).

At the new boarding place they're going to make it a great point to get Pick some horse friends, which she's never had before.

I've never had one that was really "buddy sour", but my mom had a little Arabian that you swear would work herself into a heart attack if she just couldn't SEE her barn buddy. It was terrible -- pacing or weaving in her stall, bellowing, and general hysteria. We thought she'd never survive when her pasture mate died, but she immediately latched onto another horse when we moved her to my sister's place and is the same way with that one. She is the worst I've ever seen with it...

I got my horse's together so that bad habbit was already in place and one rides fast and one very slow - he does the check it out while I ride thing - and can sometimes be quite a ways behind then will trott to catch up - but I have jerks for neighbors so when I do try to ride one the other screams and then the one I'm riding doesn't want to leave - it saves me much aggrivation to just have a buddy and take them together - yes a huge pain in the butt now with my oldest dd all moved out and on her own - we rode alot together. I'll work it out tho - always do

thanks for the ideas tho.

I make sure my horses can be ridden without buddies anywhere . When they are young I'll ride with DH or family always separating and then coming back to who ever I'm riding with. After they develope confidence to go alone then we do.If they are attached like our two geldings, because they are hauled together a lot, they are split up at home.My pet peeve is a horse that you can't ride out of the yard alone .
Believe me I am grateful that I can just step out the backdoor and be riding .As for traffic,If I 'm riding beside a road and drivers don't slow down I get their plate number .Up here horses still have the right-of-way.

It's the reason I don't have my horse at home - no place to ride. I live on a highway and have only 5 acres (and that's swampy!) So my mare's at a boarding facility. Currently she's just a couple of minutes away, but I'm moving her further because we need to take some lessons (we both need training!)

Some car drivers are so inconsiderate. I was once on a horse and a car blew the horn right beside me. My horse reared, I fell off, and the car braked briefly and then took off. Fortunately, I hung on to the reins and the horse didn't get away on me and I wasn't hurt. But was I ever ticked.

It has been so long since I've ridden my horse alone that I'm not sure if I'd have a problem trying to take her out and leave the other one home or not! I'll have to try it. At home I only have "road riding", which I don't like. We lived on a rarely-traveled road until they put a subdivision in at the end of the road closest to town and now all the "yuppies" think it's a shortcut to go flying past our place! There's a brief period before the crops come up in the neighboring fields when I can ride off-road, but otherwise we have to trailer the horses somewhere. Does anyone else have a problem with places to ride? --Julie

My horses have gotten attached to each other also. While I am still able to leave without buddies, if I am just going down the road or whatever instead of hauling somewhere; I might end up working through their anxiety, before we settle in for a nice ride. If I end up ponying the other one for exercise, we skip all that; and it ends up being a win win situation for them and for me!
I do make 1 loop around the saddle horn for leverage in case the 2nd one lags, that way I don’t get my arm ‘yanked’ off.

HJ How frustrating - hope you can get out there with your horses soon! They would probably like to get out for a while too.

It stopped raining here today and the sun came out YEAH! Lots of water everywhere and still a NE wind. But the sky was so blue like it had been washed clean.
I love it when it gets like that. Today DD and I took out the girls and rode round the exercise pen bareback. Nothing else just in the pen. Probably nothing special to you seasoned riders but this lady fell off last summer riding bareback and hurt for weeks. So I was a little apprehensive but wow what a workout for the legs and back muscles. I really want to learn better balance (I have an inner ear issue) and I think this will be the best way to work on it. I can get sick on a swing at the park so this is a real problem for me. Any suggestions?

Oh, something I learned today I just want to share. While riding Zahra I realized how responsive she was to where I looked and how I held my upper body. I knew she responded to leg signal very well but I had no idea how well she could feel my body movements.
She is so cool!

HJ is there a possibility of ponying one horse while you ride the other?Maybe two is more than you want to handle and it is nice to ride with someone but jeepers it must get frustrating being ready to ride and no one to go with you.

Well I wish you the best either way. I don't like when people say that kinda thing if they don't really have someone else - huge turn off for me and I'm like you and won't be pressured into a buy. in fact it usually makes me not buy just because of it all. but that isn't always the best thing for the animal either in this case. all I can say is do what is right for your case and I know you are doing just that.

no ride for me this weekend. it just didn't work out. the weather was great - the horses were ready - the problem was that my dh didn't get home in time on saturday then sunday it was planned and he is a firefighter and they had a huge structure fire that lasted all day long - so no ride again. I'm hoping to get him home early one night this week - I'm just dying for that first ride of the year!

my horses are older and just won't ride alone anymore - they have to go together - that is why I need him home. I need a second rider to get off the property. stinks but what can you do - don't want to stress out either horse at this point - or me either for that matter. lol

I think part of the problem that I see with the narrow chest is that this horses front legs seem to be so close together. We have raised quarter horses and we leaned more toward the wider chest and heavier bone.He is built so different from that.To me he looks a little unbalanced without the wider stance.I'm concerned over the feet since he looks like he's testing the water temp with his toes when he moves.Like he is stretching his legs way out before he sets them down.(He is a registered QH) I hope it's only because he has been trimmed so short, until they grow a bit it's going to be tough to tell if that's his natural movement .If so I don't want him!
When we brought him home the owner told us she had another buyer on the line. (maybe she does, maybe she doesn't)We won't be pushed into a purchase because someone else might be looking unless we're sure this is the right match.

I have seen horses with a narrower chest that can go ALL day, so I don't think you should worry so much about that.
My Palomino that died of old age, also had a narrower chest and he never got tired.
The feet will get better once they grow and properly trimmed....
Maybe something else will end up helping you make your decision?

I LOVE that your situation worked out, HJ!
CUTTINABBY, the feet will resolve over time, and most likely the narrow chest once the horse is working. To have a good level of training as a 4-year-old is quite the advantage -- you've got more time to use the horse since it's a youngster, plus the price is right. I wonder if there something else that's giving you the hesitation on this horse? Sometimes there's something else underlying our hesitation that isn't really obvious at first...

well here is my 2 cents - I always do say go with the gut too, however - if the price is right and you see potential - meaning - with care and proper handling will this horse turn out to be the best thing? You say another horse as trained and at a sale will be double the price? well this one needs some care and then the feet will be properly trimmed and with some care it will gain some weight and build some much needed muscle - after all a 4 year old is still very young. so just talk to your gut and ask those questions before it really decides.

here is why I make that comment. I had been with out a horse for 14 years complaining each spring that I missed having a horse - well my dh went and bought me a mare (the one I have now) and he never thought to check if she had issues at all. well she does - stringhault and she had been abused - this wasn't the horse for me - my gut told me no way - get out of this deal - but I also knew that she would be better in my hands - I had a chat with my gut and decided to keep her - even the vet wasn't sure if we could deal with it all - but you know what - she is an amazing animal - she has a tremendous spirit and we have been able to deal quite easily really. now we aren't a working ranch at all - don't get me wrong - if this were for a situation like that she wouldn't have worked out - but it was a good decision for me. so just look it over and talk to your gut - if it still says no - go with that but if it has questions - explore a bit more.

hope that helps at all. and good luck!

Dh needs a new horse so we brought one home to try last weekend .Unfortunately between weather and other committments he has only ridden him once.He was pretty good except for kicking the dog trailing at his heels .I have a gut feeling that even though the price of this horse is right and he is very quiet and reasonably broke for a 4 yr old, that he may not be what we are looking for.He is very narrow chested and his feet have been trimmed way too short.I want to listen to my gut. It's always been right before but I just don't know how to sensitively tell DH .He so desperately needs another ranch horse as he is now down to one .I know if we go to a sale and try to buy one at the same level of training the price will be double. We just can't afford that right now .
You horse people always have a different way of looking at things...should I go with my gut?

ohh that just isn't nice at all to be so snide when you give a good notice like that - perhaps they should rethink and ask why you are leaving instead of making up stories about where you are going? you are lucky to be going!

I'm also still waiting as patiently as I can for my first ride of the year. we have had 2 good days in a row and it rained some today - but I did manage to stay dry during my 5K tonight - it was fun. and they did a good job with the bbq too. I have to work in the morning but am hoping the weather will hold out and I can ride in the afternoon! my fingers are crossed!

How frustrating, Leeleepoo! It was so great of you to give that much notice -- too bad they have to be nasty about it. Hope you get your ride in. I'm still waiting for my first ride of the season, and now there's rain rolling in here for the weekend. Ah, well... I have LOTS of indoor work I should be focusing on instead! --Julie

Hey, all

It's supposed to be a decent day tomorrow so I'm hoping to get out on my mare for a ride tomorrow afternoon. Tomorrow morning I am going to go watch a dressage clinic at another boarding stable, the one I'm going to be moving to the first of June. I feel as if I should bring my horse and make her watch too, as in "did you SEE that transition? That's what you're supposed to do! Not that freaking hop thing you do!"

I'm moving my horse in 5 weeks to another boarding stable, and have given notice in my current place. And boy oh boy, has it ever got FROSTY in there! And I was a good boarder - never in the 18 months was my board late, and I sometimes brought my own wood shavings and hay and water (in the winter) and I always fed my own grain and mucked my own stall. They've been making snide remarks (untruthful it turns out) about the place I am going to. Anyway, it'll make for an unpleasant 5 weeks I am imagining. I just hope it doesn't mean they are going to neglect my horse even more. I wish I could afford to move now, but I've paid up until the end of May and am not rich enough to pay board twice for her for the same month.

Sheesh, I hate it when it gets unpleasant. I was hoping not to have to burn any bridges, but these people are being so nasty. At first they said that I could come back anytime, but I think I'll keep my horse in the woodshed first!

Hope everybody has a good weekend and gets out for a ride!

Pat

Its supposed to be a beautiful weekend here. Could Spring have finally arrived to stay? Sure hope so!

I'm really hoping to ride my horse today or sometime over the weekend. I have this fantasy that he'll be great for me because he's so thankful to be back home. Ha! That's probably not going to happen but I can wish, right?

As for the little TB mare - she still hasn't gotten her feet done. Supposedly the farrier is coming out tomorrow morning. I'll believe it when I see it. I'm trying to not get upset about that whole situation. Reminding myself that if its meant to be, it will work out in the end.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Hello All,

I hope everyone is enjoying their day. The weather here is a little bit cloudy and we are getting a few rain sprinkles. It isn't suppose to rain all day. I hope it turns out to be sunny and warm.

Best wishes to all!

This just reminds me of issues that could be caused by an ill-fitting saddle that's pinching the horse or a different bridle or SOMETHING that was different with this particular person on her....

CAHORSEYGIRL, I don't have any horses, but have to agree with rest, that a trainer would not give up after one ride. That isn't even giving the horse a chance to see if it will work with her. I am sorry that it didn't work out for you and your horse.

I am also sorry to hear that you might have to get ride of her. She sounds like a beautiful horse. I wish I could have one.

I wish you all the BEST!

CAHORSEYGIRL - I have to agree with the others - a good trainer would never give up after 1 ride - can't really be much of a trainer. my sister trained horses and my first horse just hated her and I mean hated her. My sister is the one who saddle broke her and she was less than gentle so every time my sister would get on her she would rear up and even go right over trying to squish my sister - she actually would land on her own back trying to squish her. she also would try to throw her every chance she got - my sister eventually gave up - but my horse never ever did anything to me - never even tried to do any of that to anyone else who ever rode her - she just hated my sister. so they really can tell a jerk when they find one. lol - yes, my sister can be a jerk. so perhaps your horse just had better sense than your friend. you probably got really lucky there before your horse got injured by that trainer.

CAHORSEYGIRL- He sounds like a wonderful horse. That is strange that the trainer would give up after one try. So sorry that didn't work out for you... very disappointing.

Just a thought about the mare that you were hoping to get... while DD and I were looking for OUR perfect horse we saw a lot of horses that we would like to call our own but they didn't work out. It turned out to be for the best because we eventually found the two that we have now and they are perfect matches for us. So maybe there is an even better horse out there for you that you haven't met yet.
