Too,too many. I do unabridged audio books as I drive. I am always finding a new one. I love James Lee Burke, Micheal Connelly, James Patterson, but recently found 3 new ones.

When I was a young girl, Judy Blume was my favorite.

However, years later, my favorite author is now Joyce Meyer.

Neil Gaiman. Hands down. Everything from short stories to graphic novels to children's lit to TV shows. He is amazing in everything. (And I have had the personal experience of making a complete fool of myself in front of my idol, who was immensely gracious and lovely.)

I like humour, fantasy, mystery, bizarre or powerful. My brain's mush at the moment, but some excellent writers are::
Jane Austen (humour)
Henry Miller (powerful)
Terry Pratchett (fantasy)
Steinbeck (powerful)
PG Wodehouse (humour)
Romance is okay too, but only if it's secondary to a good humour (e.g.Jane Austen), fantasy, mystery or gut-punch-powerful story.

I remember reading William Golding's Lord of the Flies in high school. I both hated and loved that book. It was powerful, but the story made me sick.
Oh, they're all dead, those authors.

Okay, two living authors who blew my socks off:
Ann-Marie MacDonald (Fall On Your Knees) - power
Miriam Toews (A Complicated Kindness) - humour AND power, the perfect writer

Oh my gosh, Soft Val I love you! Steinbeck is my very favorite author too. I just read East of Eden over the summer, and oh my gosh, it was fantastic!

I just love the way he builds the characters, makes you feel for them. They're just ordinary people, but they face extraordinary odds, and so they become extraordinary in themselves.

Also, his books always make me cry.

Since my favorite book of all time is The Grapes of Wrath, I will say John Steinbeck. I often tell people that they should not allow another day pass in their life without reading TGOW. Especially in the world we are living in today.
Other favorites include, Stephen King.
Another fantastic writer, that some of you may have heard of, is Jason Isbell.
Not an author of books, but of music.
If you have not heard of this young man, I recommend him highly, his songs are stories of his own life, and overcoming adversity. Read the lyrics of his songs. Great storytelling.

There are so many great writers. Hemingway, Dickens, Sherwood Anderson, Raymond Carver, Sembene Ousman...the list goes on and on. If I add poets to the list it would include so many more, such as Frost, Sylvia Plath, and Joni Mitchell. I cheated on that one, but I can't help but any classify many of her song lyrics as poetry.
