My partner tells me that Don't Ask, Don't Tell is an executive order, and Obama could take it down with the stroke of a pen. If this is the case, he could have made a good start already!

i agree with the article that 6 months in office is not a long enough time to give his agenda full development. i can only hope, however, that he DOES repeal don't ask don't tell, especially since the congress is in favor of this repeal, and that he DOES back overturning DOMA and comes out (pun IS intended) more firmly for states' rights for pro-gay-marriage and equality. i hope against hope that this administration is NOT politics as usual. i will be sad and very disappointed if, in 3-1/2 years, that turns out to be the case.

Obama. As far as I am concerned there isn't another choice. McCain is toeing the Republican party line.

So... on to another subject.

How are people planning to vote in the fall, now that it appears to be McCain vs. Obama (vs. Bob Barr for the Libertarians)?

Food is a large part of our social lives. I'm sure it goes back to the days when we were living in caves. The offering of food is one of the oldest ways of extending hospitality and friendship.

In modern American society, where food (especially junk food) is plentiful, perhaps it is time to come up with a new oil for social wheels.

Maybe it is because everything, including sex seems to start with food. I wonder how much weight gain is because eating is is such a large part of our social lives. It seems that every celebration has loads of fat filled foods. From the small events like dates and dinner parties to the big holidays, the occasion must be marked with lots of food.

In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.

I'm with you on the looks. They only go so far until boredom sets in because the person does not have a personality or sense of humor.

I do believe it is normal in relationships to put on weight in the beginning - it is usually after the sex slows down!!

Humm...could be. Great food and great company can lead to over eating. I know we both gained weight after we got together. Of course it could also be that I like to cook and you enjoy sharing in my vice. Perhaps other couples have the same pleasure in dining together.

I think the article is right about the fact there is less pressure to be thin in lesbian couples. Not that I don't enjoy a great pair of legs, but to hold my attention more than a moment takes a lot more. I cannot speak for everyone else, but I really don't care as much about the package as the contents. A woman with brains, personality, character, and sense of humor will wow me every time.

More grist for the Lesbian=Fat debate:

lifewise.canoe.ca/SexRomance/Lovewis
e/
2007/06/14/4260406.html
Boston University took a 2002 national survey of almost 6,000 women and found that lesbians are 2.69 times more likely to be overweight and 2.47 times more likely to be obese.

Is this due to physical or psychological reasons? One interviewee for a related op-ed:
www.fridae.com/newsfeatures/printer.
ph
p?articleid=1942

“When I wanted to be boyish, I gained weight on purpose to be... bigger,” she says. “A lot of the boi dykes do it here. They get heavy on purpose. To be more mannish. I think you're allowed to be fat in the lesbian world. You don't get judged for it the same way. And the married lesbians --well they are at home, eating. I don't think they do it on purpose, but they are happy.”

She makes it sound like happiness = fat, too. Interesting. Maybe the question should be: Are lesbians happier?

Yes, control is the key. That Ben and Jerry's stop was only one scoop. The Strawberry Cheesecake Ice Cream was a yummy anniversary indulgence. emoticon
Overall though, we behaved pretty well on vacation. There were a couple of days when my calorie count went above the Sparkpeople guideline but never into the range where it would undo the weight loss.

Exercise was more difficult on a driving trip. Lots of sitting in the car. We tended to have a lot of exercise one day and none the next. Also, some places did not have good internet access to do the bootcamp workouts. emoticon This week we are working extra hard.

Oh, is THAT why we went to the Ben & Jerry's factory on our anniversary? emoticon

The being less attractive is mentioned in the book, I believe. I know that most husbands don't like their wives 'tarting themselves up', no matter how much they liked it before marriage. They don't want other men looking at 'their' women. Perhaps men who want trophy wives don't have this problem (they're competing with men in another way).

Do lesbians sabotage each others' diets? Or do we simply reinforce each other's vices?

I agree. I have also noticed that some of my female family members have husbands who actively sabotage their diets. I am not sure they are aware of what they are doing, but when you know your spouse is watching her weight and you load up on junk food on a shopping trip that is what happens.

Could it be that instead of trophy wives some men prefer their wives be less attractive to other men?

There is quite a bit of truth in what you shared. I also believe your theory would also apply to straight heavy women as well. Straight women also hide behind their weight and use it as a defense to keep men and their sexuality at arm's length. What are your thoughts?l

I think being heavy might have a little correlation with not wanting men to be interested in us. Some of us have had rather unpleasant experiences with men and there is a perception of safety in feeling unattractive.

I read that book way back in college! I believe that the image of lesbians has been changing over the past several years and yet the stereotype of the large bull-dyke still lingers. I really don't believe it has to do with not being interested in men.

Back to the weight loss thing: did anyone else read _Fat is a Femnist Issue_ by Susie Orbach? I read it when I was young because my mother bought it and it looked interesting. It questioned the notion of women dieting to be attractive to men, and the way other women treat a woman who starts losing weight and becoming more attractive. Naturally, it also suggested that fat women sometimes use it as armor to deflect male advances, or to refuse to come to terms with their femininity.

I've been reading that we're fatter than straight women. Do lesbians use fat as 'armor'? Are we trying to hide our womanly curves? Or do we 'let ourselves go' because we aren't interested in men and we don't feel obligated to feel thin?

I told her a lesbian trophy wife should be able to wear anything she wants. After all, what's the point of being a prize if you can't enjoy the perks? Then again...a lesbian trophy wife would also look good in nothing at all.

Hmm. I really hadn't given it much thought yet.

Should I go for 'lipstick lesbian'? What if I can't apply lipstick correctly? Could I be a 'lipgloss lesbian' instead?

Should I go for the tennis look? Never mind that I've never played tennis...

Maybe the leather look?

Don't you just hate it when all your joints creak when you bend over to pick something up off the floor. I found yoga helped me a lot with that.

So what do lesbian trophy wives wear any ways? Do I need new outfits?? Wait til I tell my partner that I need new outfits to be her trophy wife, she'll flip cause I already take up too much of the closet! emoticon

Have a great day, thanks for making me smile!

My primary reason for joining SP was because my wife had joined. However, I have had increasing pain in my joints over the last few years and I hope a lower weight and exercise will improve the situation.

As for looks: I told HypatiaX that we could be each other's 'trophy wives'. I told her, though, that I wouldn't do heels or pants I couldn't breathe in, and she said, "But you'll be a LESBIAN trophy wife. You won't have to dress like a straight trophy wife."

Still, I'm working hard on getting those blasted numbers down.

I think that as I get older it is more important for my health to lose weight. My doctor is very firm about insisting I drop 50 pounds after developing a heal spur and having to increase blood pressure meds.

For me, personally, I'm losing weight for a lot of reasons -- not the least of which is that my partner has lost weight and gotten totally buff on me! I've got to keep up! Kidding aside (sort of) the main reason for me is that I want to stay healthy - there are so many increased health risks associated with obesity. Sure I want to look good too, who doesn't? But health is the number one factor with me.

Good question!

Here's a question I have: a preponderance of the people on this site are female. Are these women actually fatter than their husbands (since most of them are straight), or do they simply feel worse about being fat/less attractive to men?

Next question: since we are all ostensibly lesbians here, are we losing weight because we feel unattractive, too, or do we have different reasons to lose weight than straight women?

How about with the election? My wife and I are in Kentucky and have a primary coming up. I have been avoiding working on the presidential contest, but we did distribute lit for one of the local races. Anyone else working for candidates? There are a couple of states with marriage issues on the ballot. Anyone involved in those campaigns?

Hi I am sueann, and I joined your group because I wanted to connect with other lesbians who wanted to bring their "Sexy Back" My goal is to lose 110 lbs in approx 1 year and my wife' is to lose 30 - 40 lbs but slowly so she can work with me. Based on the comments I have read, let me put my two pence in. I look straight I guess because I don't know how to look lesbian. I had a husband and I have 4 wonderful children an 1 grandchild that I don't regret. My wife and I are contemplating adopting since my Utero is shot and I can't carry anymore babies. I love a soft butch woman and do swoon over them but I do admire a good looking femme. I don't care about race even though it's an issue in the lesbian community based on where you are socializing but I try not to let it phase me. Having said all of this. I hope you will let me join your team and be there for you as I hope you will be there for me.

Peace Out!!

Hi again

I found a very cool website -- threadless.com - very cool t-shirts. I can't wait until I can fit into a "girly tee."

Hey there!

Would strongly like to recommend a book to y'all who struggle with anxiety/depression problems. I worked through this book and I feel much better.

The book is called "Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life" by Steven Hayes, Ph.D. It can be a little "heady" at times, but stick to it. Mindfulness techniques abound.

Hi

It's been a year since I posted. Gave up last year, but now my partner and I are renewing our pledge to lose weight.

Wish me luck.

I will try to post more. Is anybody having problems with wanting to vote for Hillary but just can't because of her platform?

Why isn't this forum more active? I feel it's been a waste of my time to keep checking here.

Brand new to SP and I think I've found a fantastic forum here!

I'd attempt to get my partner involved in this group but she doesn't even know what the term "liberal" means! She HATES any politics!

Anyway, HI EVERYONE!

Hi, Sahara... I know what you mean. My GF and I overheard a conversation recently where they identified her as 'the dyke' and concluded that I must be 'the girlfriend'. LOL But either way, I am pretty proud about who I am and as long as I get respect, it doesn't bother me too much.
I think it is cool that this team is on SP. I am originally from Germany and still find life in the US more restrictive.

Gal...I don't make ANYONE's gaydar go beep! When I first came out, I tried the 'sporty androgenous' look....really, really NOT me. I just looked...straight with short hair, lol. Being that I was married for 14 years (took me awhile to figure myself out, *blush*) and have 4 kids, I suppose it is a natural enough mistake...but there are days I really want a purple "lesbian" tattoo written across my forehead...just so it's OBVIOUS, lol. Especially, when I was single...I hated being so UNobviously queer.

Then again, it's who you are inside that counts, aye? :)

thanks for the invite to tattooed ladies, i've joined. I have two tattoos, and have designed 2 (3?) more that I plan to get at intervals. i of course have one planned for the first 10 pounds, and then I'll probably use the other ones as rewards as well. I am a graphic designer, and hope to do a lot of tattoo design, for others as well as myself. so far i have a kanji symbol for "to dream" on my upper right chest area (you can see it in my icon) and one i designed myself on my lower back, which is symbolic of air, creation, and celestial bodies (symbolic to me, that is)- there's a pic of it in my photo gallery - lots of people thing it's supposed to be a woman's flowing hair, which I guess is okay too, but not exactly what I had in mind.

Another topic could be, yay to the amendment being shot down, although I guess that's old news by now.

Also, a personal dilemma - anyone else here who has same-sex attractions but thinks they come off as straight? I never thought that people pigeon-holed that much, but ever since I stopped cutting my hair really short, people keep assuming I'm straight. My college mentor, who happens to be gay, jokingly said I'd given her the wrong impression with my blue buzz cut, judging from the fact that I now have long hair and at the time was wearing a skirt! I was like, er, that assumption wasn't entirely wrong! It kinda rubbed me the wrong way.

Actually, there are a lot of subjects we could cover. Such as, do you have any tattoos or piercings? If you do or are thinking of getting one, maybe you'd like to join Tattooed Women. We talk tattoos over there and piercings and share pics.

What I mean by being "unversed" in partners and children is that I don't have a lot to say on either subject, I have neither - there just seems to be a lot of conversation about those two things! I'm sure there's plenty of things that will come up in conversation that I'll have comments on. so far, all I have to say is everything I've read on this board has been so friendly and supportive, I hope I can add to that!

Was your husband's open adoption? Or did he ever know his biological parents? Our son is currently living in the house with us as well as his biological siblings and mother (they moved in with us so she could get her life on track), so he'll know them but not likely he'll ever know his father. The other kids obviously do, and unfortunately they don't see what a deadbeat he is, they just miss him.

Anyway, my partner is a very gentle spirit the even keel that keeps us all together, and my rock.

Have a great day!

Amy

Of course, there's an "invisible umbilical cord"!! My hubby Fred is adopted and he grew up just fine. I liked your pics too. Your partner seems a gentle spirit. It's nice getting to know you!

We tried having one, but just short of making through the first trimester my partner miscarried. Subsequently her sister got pregnant with her 3rd by a the same deadbeat dad that the other two had (don't get me started on that one) and they offered to allow us to adopt. We packed up and moved to WA within 6 months of finding out. 3 months after that we were parents. It was easy, but I think mostly because it was an open adoption. We had a kick ass lawyer too which didn't hurt. So biologically he's my partner's nephew, but I swear they have an invisible umbilical cord.

Thanks for the welcome, looking forward to talking tats with you guys. You're puppy is sooo cute!

Thank you for joining tattooed women and adding me to your friends. Sometimes it's hard to get the significant others to join up. Mine just recently joined and then the computer wouldn't let him in!! I have it fixed now. Your son is soooo cute and such a big man! Did you say he was adopted? Was it an easy adoption?

I will, and I'll add you to my spark friends (I haven't been able to convince my partner to get into SP yet)! I've lost another 3lbs so I've only got 12 more to go. And I have to get the tattoo soon because my son is so big his footprint is almost too big to fit on my forearm. He's 2.5 years old, 36" tall and I'm 33 years old and 60" tall. I almost can't carry him anymore. emoticon

Hi Sharyn-

Sorry I misspelled your name in that last message. My partner is totally into tats also. One of my rewards for a short term goal is my next tat at 20lbs. 15 more to go. I'm going to get my son's 2.5 year old foot print on my forearm. My partner and I had Celtic friendship rings tattooed on our ring fingers this year for out 6th anniversary. We're addicted to ink! emoticon

My dream is just to be able to keep up with my kid and hopefully have another. Seems small in comparison to Kilimanjaro. emoticon

Howdo -
I've been on and off the spark pages but think I finally am here to stay. My 62 year old body needs to lose a few pounds( like about 20. I love keeping track of what I eat by counting calories - reminds me of the 50's. The nutritional breakdown reminds me to take my calcium and vitamins- very helpful. I am a few years away from retirement and need to get in shape because I want to fulfill one of my dreams - when I retire i want to climb Kilaminjaro. Any want to join me? What are your dreams?

I think it's all about the age. FGT came out in movie theatres when I turned 17 or 18 and was just "coming out" myself. It was a revelation!

Kathy Bates is my hero in that movie, as well as Idgy of course.

Just joined your group and can't wait to get started with the transformation. Hello to all and hope that SparkPeople seems just as amazing to all of you than it does to me. What a great website!

That is great that you train together. My partner hasn't gotten on the bandwagon yet, but she's supportive. I haven't lost much weight because of some meds I'm on, but am definitely firmer and have more energy, which is a good place to start. emoticon

My partner and I do our training together -- it has helped a lot with feeling less tired but not much for the weight loss -- we need to do a lot more cardio on our own and, of course, count calories!

Don't you know it. You would think they had something better to do! My consolation is that they must be awfully insecure about marriage tho think that we threaten it so. Sigh. Baby steps... we've come a long way.

They are dragging out the ol' constitutional amendment thing again! Luckily, it doesn't seem to have much steam this time. Thank you Harry Reid!
