I am new here and wanted to introduce myself. I am actually relatively new to SparkPeople and have just been diagnosed with PCOS. I haven't even had the follow up visit with my doctor yet to discuss a treatment plan - I just got the lab results confirming what the doctor suspected. The same tests also revealed Hypothyroidism, so it looks like I got the double whammy! I was happy to find this forum. It's always less scary if you can talk to others going through the same things.

I was on clomid when trying to have my last baby. It didn't work for me. What worked was my chiropractor. She did my regular adjustments and added a cranial adjustment. Told me to call her in 3 weeks to tell her I was pregnant. I called her in 2 weeks. That baby will be 21 in January!

Hello everyone. I am new to this particular group.

I am in my mid 20s. PCOS was discovered when I was in my late teens, and was stated as being the main reason for whatever cycle disorders I have been having. It's frustrating, but learning to live with it is something I am coping with.

Just want to say hello and it is refreshing to find others who are in somewhat the same bracket as me.

Loving me, so that I could be better at loving you.

Hello everyone! I'm new to this team, didn't realize until today that there was a PCOS team. I was diagnosed back in '97 after gaining LOTS of weight in just a couple of months and having lots of painful, irregular periods. After my first laprascope, I conceived my daughter, Kayley (now 6) exactly 6 months later. I'm on Metformin and attempting to control the PCOS without the birth control because of the negative side effects I've experienced. Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Hi! I'm new to this forum, but not to Spark People. I was diagnosed with PCOS yesterday and I'm trying to sort it all out. We figured it out because my husband and I have been trying for almost two and half year to conceive with no luck.

My doctor told me I'm not a normal case. I get regular, albeit, short TOMs, I'm not pre-diabetic, I have good cholesterol and good blood pressure, and though it's been slow going, I've been losing weight at a good rate. She told me I was going to be a tough nut to crack.

I've been on 4 rounds of clomid and next month we're doubling the dose, but it hasn't been doing anything. We haven't tried metformin yet, but I'm a little apprehensive about it. I was also encouraged to try acupuncture, so I'll be setting up an appointment for it this week.

I'm glad to know what the problem is even if it's going to take some time to work through. I'm also glad that there are support systems out there. Looking forward to meeting all of you. Good luck on your respective journies.

Hello - just wanted to introduce myself. I have recently been diadnosed with PCOS after a long road of trying t figure out what is wrong. I have not had the fertillity issues that many people endure, but I have many other symptoms, most pretty TMI, that went undiagnosed. I have just started Met and so far so good. I am eager to read about everyones experience in dealing with PCOS. Looking forward to getting to know you all!

We love ourselves.

I just started working out last w3eek, took me a little while to get mentally to the place I needed to be to be totally back in the sparkpeople thing. Then I got sick.

After trying for 8 years to get some real help for my PCOS I finally stopped waiting on my PCP and my OBGYN to wake up and called a reproductive endocrinologist. The lady on the phone was trying to refer me back to my OBGYN since I am not trying to get pregenant and I almost broke out into tears. She asked me if I was on met and I told her what my PCP said...I'm not diabetic I don't need to be on it. She began explaining why it is used for PCOS and I told her I know...and she then proceeded to make me an appt. The dr is supposedly one of the best PCOS specialists out there, just lucked up he is in my hometown. Anyway I feel better, although I cant get in til January, but I thought I was gonna have to go redneck to get some help!!

ABout the fish oil,my husbands therapist has reccomended it for his mood disorders(Major depressive disorder and anxiety) and I thought I might take it with him but raising testosterone scares me!!! Still taking the cinnamon but it gives me heartburn from Hades!!

Mamapete, i will say that all the dieting in the world has only produced minimal results. I only lose when I exercise, cardio and strength training. I eliminated the strength training a couple years ago when I was given some bad advice, and that's when I plateaued. So I am starting to incorporate some resistance bands into my workout routine, I ties some to the bars on my treadmill and work the arms while I walk, and I have a body ball for the core.

Hey everybody! I'm new to the board and recently diagnosed. Just think, I've been dealing with symptoms for years and nobody put it together until last week that it's PCOS.

Not just a hormone imbalance, not just pre-diabetes.

I am excited that there's hope - I have been diving into research and looking for support online, I've belonged to Sparkpeople for a while but haven't really participated 100%. I am so grateful there's a PCOS team here.

I've been on Metformin for the prediabetes since August, but I think I need to up my doseage, which I will not do until I go back to my primary doctor next week (after doing a follow up fasting blood test).

I look forward to fighting this pain-in-the-butt syndrome with you all.

Just an FYI, I too have struggled with the weight and use to take Metformin. What I have found to work for me is a healthy diet, whole grains or wheat instead of white. I only drink ice water and use soy milk on my cereal or to cook when I need milk and I exercise CARDIO 1-3 hours a day. Even when I do everything but the cardio, I only lose a pound or so but when I add in that cardio, it really tones my body and the weight starts to come off. Need to be consistant though. Good luck to everyone!

I am new to sparkpeople and I also have PCOS, have had it for 2 years now, and have been having trouble managing it as well. Probably because I am so horrible about remember to take my metformin, and develop a healthy diet plan.

Being a newbie can anyone offer help on how to set up my nutrition section on here to provide me with the best results for this disorder?

Just want to post a intro. I was diagnosed with PCOS 10 yrs ago. I have sporadically tried to overcome it with diet and metformin but to no avail. My weight has balooned to the highest it has ever been and at 38, I feel that I have to get on top of it now. My goal is to get to normal and I am defining normal as the middle of the normal weight range for my height (115 pounds). I am looking for education, support and inspiration in this group

Question-I have read fish oil can help us with PCOS. Recently I read fish oil raises testosterone, which is already usually high in women with PCOS. Anyone have feedback on this?
Also, has anyone been checked for a Vit B-12 deficiency while on metformin?

Hey everyone. I've been on sparkpeople for awhile now but have just started taking my metformin. After having IUI 3 times and getting pregnant I lost the baby after ten weeks. I am now seeing my RE again and he prescribed it metformin to me. I only take clomid to ovulate and ovidrel to release the egg but all this is new to me. I havent't really talked to any doctor about the pcos except being diagnosed by my RE. So I'm not even sure how serious my case is.
I have been successful with weightloss but can't get under 235. I've been here and over since I was 12 years old. This drives me crazy. Everyone have a great weekend.

hello everyone hope you had a good weekend. I'm stressed by being sick, have a huge school assignment and trying to get ready for halloween. All i really want to do is lay on the couch and veg til I can stop freaking coughing!! I fell victim to some cake this weekend but Im determined not to lose momentum this time. I got some acidophoplus supplement to take along with my antibiotic and they had them buy one get one free, so Im trying sme cinnamon capsules to see if that helps with the IR.

Hey Everyone I just joined this wonderful group.
I had some terrible pain with the TOM visits every month, and then last year at one point I stopped having my period for 5 months...I went to the doctor and sure enough she said, you have many cysts on ur right ovary.... I got an ultrasound just to make sure and it came back positive.... this explained all the pain i was having every month. So even though i didn't take any meds my natural path gave me some herbal remedies and my periods came back....
i still experience crazy amount of pain, and I hope that when i do decide to get pregnant I will be able to.

Hi Angmadill

Are you taking the extended release Metformin? It can help relieve side effects. Also, if you are like me, they want you on 2000mg per day. Don't start that high. Work your way up to it, and split your doses into 2 a day, even if it's extended release.

It also helps to eat right. The more poor eating choices I make, the worse my Metformin side effects.

Hope this helps!

Also, PCOS causes insulin resistance. Normally your body's cells pull insulin out of your blood stream. We are insulin resistant, so our cells don't do a great job pulling that insulin back out. This can actually lead to low blood sugar and weight gain because the insulin is allowed to store too much sugar from your blood, and you don't have enough left for right now. The metformin acts to help with this.

I have an AWESOME Endocrinologist! She is so busy, but she always takes the time to talk, explain, draw diagrams, etc. If you don't like yours, shop around. There are great doctors out there!

Hello, I am new to SP and am very happy to find a PCOS group. I was diagnosed in August, and have been having a hard time knowing what do to. My Endocrinologist is 2 hrs away and gave the info over the phone. “You have PCOS, you have to much insulin and need to take Metformin”, and that was it. So I really have no idea what to do. I haven’t been good about taking the metformin cause of the side effects. But I know that if I don’t do something to get the weight off that I will not be around for my children (3boys, 11, 9, and 5). So I am excited about having a place where I can find people that are going through the same issues as me.

Hi Audrey Jo,

My story is very similar to McDowe's. I, too, had/have the irregular periods, hair loss, facial hair, extra weight around the middle, and I'm also hypothyroid. We're now trying to conceive and even though Clomid and Femara didn't work for me(we also tried Clomid & Femara with Menopur shots...separately, of course, but that also did nothing). Now I'm on Gonal-F and at my u/s yesterday, it showed I have TWO dominant follicles on my right ovary!

The one thing that has helped tremendously with my weight loss is getting my thyroid in check. Although my numbers were borderline, they were still within the normal range. My doctor then had my antibodies checked, which were positive. So I've been on Levothyroxine and my weight loss has been awesome. So if you haven't had your thyroid checked, do it.

I, too, love my Endocrinologist. She, along with my RE, have been awesome! If you can, start seeing a dietitian as well. Between those 3 ladies, I've gained a lot of confidence in myself.

Hi Audrey JO- I have a similar experience to yours. I was diagnosed in my teens, have never had regular periods.

There is hope! My doctors told me I needed to lose weight to increase my chances of conceiving. It took me a year of firm determination, but I lost 85 pounds. I was off most medications, and started having regular periods for the first time in my life. I still used Clomid to conceive, but it worked the second month!

I gained all the weight back during the pregnancy. I had a mild case of gestational diabetes (the guidelines have since changed, I wasn't diagnosed then, but I would have now) that caused the weight gain and my daughter's larger than normal birth weight, but she's here, and healthy.

I lost a small amount of weight over the next year. We wanted to start trying again. Clomid didn't work, so my OB/Gyn sent me to a fertility specialist. He put me on Femara, which worked the first month!

I made it a priority to keep an eye on my blood sugar daily, so I was diagnosed early in pregnancy with Gestational, and had to use insulin and diet to keep it controlled. I LOST 40 pounds during the pregnancy. It freaked me out, but the baby is just fine!

We now have 2 healthy kids, and I am back to focusing on my health for me.

I have every textbook icky symptom of PCOS from irreg periods to hair loss to extra facial hair to carrying an extra 120 pounds of weight. I take 8 different medications daily.

I see an endocrinologist for my PCOS, and I believe she has been worth every penny! She has a better understanding of my symptoms and offers cutting edge treatment options.

I will tell you, every day you are not on birth control is a day that your symptoms will remind you of it. I personally get a bit crazy on fertility drugs, especially Femara.

Keep the faith, I think if things are harder to obtain, it's easier to appreciate them once they are here.

Welcome Audrey JO. Most of us here have kids, so don't let the diagnosis get you down. Sometimes it just takes a little bit if work.

Hello, I'm new to the group. I was diagnosed yesterday with PCOS, although I've thought it was what I had for a while. I have never had a normal period in my life, except when I was on birth control.

My husband and I want o have kids, and want to get pregnant right now. So, I have been put on a medication that should help regulate my periods and ovulation. I'm also working to loose weight. My doctor says that will help regulate my periods, but for me I'm skeptible. I have not always been this big and my periods have always been screwed up.

So I have found a reason/motivation/determination to really lose weight. Its more that just wanting to look good, its about my healthy and my future children.

I'm excited there is a group on here so we all can support each other. I look forward to it!

I've been gone for awhile too, and now it's time to come back and get serious again. I don't recognize most of the names on here, but there are a few old-timers that I'm glad to see! (Hi Stephanie, Cindy & Ally!!).

My life is still completely insane - 2 jobs, school, etc. I'm almost finished with school, and then can hopefully find a job that will replace both of the ones I have with just one job. I've gained back all of the weight that I lost on SP, and am not happy about that at all. emoticon Started tracking my food again this morning, so I'll just have to go from there and see what happens.

Nice to see you back too Cindy. I can imagine that it is hard to work out with those issues. I know that at this weight I have developed arthritis in my hips and am in alot of pain recently, spending lots of time at the chiropractor. Knees too, but I know if I don't lose the weight back it's just going to get worse. Im working on the food right now, then going to work on the exercise. Time is precious too since I've started my Masters degree.

Hi - I'm new here. My name is Dena, and I'm 33 years old. I was just diagnosed with PCOS last week. And I started a "get healthy" program yesterday. I'm tracking my food here on spark and am hoping to make a life change - not just go on a diet.

PCOS related - I found out because I had a very irregular period since August (period lasted 7 weeks - just finally stopping now with BCP). Other symptoms that I have now found out are/could be related that I have: acne, obesity, skin tags, hair loss (within the last year), anxiety, mood swings. I also since July have been having Bruxism (clenching and grinding teeth especially when sleeping). I'm not sure if that's related to the PCOS or not. But I've had migraines and bad head pains from that.

To help my issues, my gyn put me on Loestrin FE to regulate my period and she told me I need to lose weight to help with the other PCOS issues. For the Bruxism I got a custom made night guard from my dentist which seems to be helping although it's uncomfortable. Hopefully I'll get used to it.

So that's my story! I'm hoping to find the motivation here at Spark to get and stay healthy!!
