Hi Mikey,

Your blood glucose control will not have any harmful effects on your wife's pregnancy. If your wife were diabetic then her control would have a great influence on the fetus.

There is a small chance that the child could develop diabetes. IMHO that is not that big of a deal as I am T1 daughter of a T1.

TRICKYYY -

I noticed SP likes to break links up into multiple lines. If you want to see something linked from here, make sure you get the whole link. Just copy/paste it line by line.

Copy 1st line, paste in address bar. Copy second line, CLICK TWICE (not same as double click) in address bar, Paste, then repeat as necessary until you have the whole link. Then hit enter and enjoy.

[EDIT]
Oh yeah - when you click the second time to paste, of course, be sure to click at the end of what's in the address bar. That way, you don't paste in the middle of the rest of the link.

It does mention that, and this alone should be motivation enough to start tracking those numbers and earn your pump, Mikey!

i couldn't get the link to work, but hopefully it mentioned erectile dysfunction! one of the many terrible side-effects of continuos high blood glucose levels. which, i have to say, for a guy has to be a total bummer (for your wives, too)

Keep on keepin' on!

Good link... that's something that I'll have to follow regularly as they find out more. Kinda scary! This is #2 in a series of wake-up calls for me this week. SparkPeople might be having another success story on their hands...

:D

Here's a link I found related to your question...it deals with fertility issues for diabetics, but it also talks about other aspects the reproduction issue.

I've been avoiding facing some of these diabetes fall-out issues...the people on this board just won't let me! Thanks for that.

I'm new to SparkPeople and don't usually participate in forums/message boards so this is relatively new to me. Please forgive me (in advance) for rambling but I have to explain everything... :)

I have been married for a short while now (approaching 2 months) and we are taking measures to prevent a baby from coming along any time soon. However, of course and as we all know, it's always a possibility if something goes wrong with the prevention.

That said, I am a Type 1, age 24, and have had diabetes for 13 years. I've never, ever been in "good control" of my blood sugars. For most of my life, I've been completely "out of control" of my blood sugars. No drug/smoking/alcohol history, just out of control with sugars. (dKa 4x in 10 years) Since I got married and moved from the parents' house, I've gotten better but my A1C is still skyrocketed and my sugars stay outrageously high.

If she were to conceive, and my sugar or A1C was high (10-13) at conception, does that cause a potential problem for the baby? If so, what can happen?
