Lent is a time to work on your relationship with the Lord and those in your life. I am already Vegan, but like others, I work on giving up negative traits. It is also a time of forgiveness. Especially, forgiveness of one's self if there is a slip during these forty days. A good lesson for us all.

My church doesn't celebrate lent but some of my mother's friends does so they are all doing it together. I said i would did it with my mom for support but still wanted to know what lent was, etc. It should be good for me....a time to start fresh and get closer to God, etc.

Thanks for the reminder that lent is coming up! My church doesn't specifically celebrate lent, but I to see it as a good time to refocus and start anew in different areas of my life. I'll probably give up tv...I ought to anyway!

Giving up things for lent was never really part of my religious tradition, but I had friends who always did it. I look at it as another opportunity to start fresh. Like a new year. I've given up different things for many years, but the last few instead of giving things up--I have added something. It really has the same impact for me adding discipline and making me reflect on my issues. I look at my life and see what is absent from it... and find a way to add that back in. Inevitably I give something up--eg. if I am adding something that takes time... tv time is given up. Adding good things makes me "have" to give up or at least cut down other things.

I am not that into the ethical reasons of going veg/an but am open-minded about the whole thing....i don't like the mistreat and think it's sad but don't dwell on it. Thanks for the site....will have to check it out.

Hi Jat welcome! emoticon Glad you're with us!
Were you looking for Christian health books or the ethical side of veganism from a Christian perspective?
Here's a list of books for you: http://www.all-creatures.org/cva/books.htm
I haven't read any of them,so I can't vouch for any. I have also heard good things about: Dominion of man by Matthew Scully.

Anyway, I am already vegan so I'm not giving anything up for lent. (I'm non-denominational anyway, but I think we can learn from our brothers and sisters of all denominations) I think I'm going to try to work on kicking my bad temper to the curb for 40 days. Obviously, it's going to be a process longer than that, but I'm going to focus on it for lent.

Ash Wednesday is February 25th.
I will be interested to see what you find as you read up on it!
I know alot of people do give up meat and dairy for that time, but I think they often still eat fish.

It's ash wed right? Well my mother and some co-workers are doing it for 40 days leading up to easter i suppose. I said i would do it with her for support. Is anyone else doing it? I have to read up on it as i've never done it before. I am also going to be getting some vegan cookbooks, etc to get myself mentally prepared. Any of you know of any books that aren't saying why it's scientifically good to be vegan? I've read enough of them. Christian books would be preferred. Ok...done ranting. Thanks
