Oil of Oregano can be a great tool in battling "cooties" - I'd suggest you follow up with some kefir (or other probiotic) to help restore the balance. Too much "OoO" can create digestive distress.

...and one of the tastiest cures of all:
Roasted Green Chile w/ fresh garlic! (you can purchase the mild stuff if you're sensitive to the spice) It packs an amazing nutritional punch and the capsacin is a great metabolism booster. Oh - and it's yummy too.

Thanks. In MO they are plentiful, but most people are more interested in elderberry wine yhan elderberry juice.

I have not been able to find elderberries in many may years, so I buy the juice ready made.
However, my mom used to boil the berries and strain them, then bottle them while still warm.

The quantity is as needed. During whooping cough, my kids both practically lived off of it for a couple of days. Warm up in a hot water bath, add a teaspoon of honey to 8 oz of juice (wild honey is best in my opinion), and enjoy as hot as possible.

The honey is what causes the lose stools, I'd bet, and the heat helps with breaking up the congestion, but the elderberry juice has a lot to do with the rapid success. :)

On the subject of elder flower tea for congestion:

I was always given hot elderberry juice with honey. It is effective enough that I and my children got through whooping cough without any major ills. it breaks down a fever and clears congestion. It also tastes very very good and kids love it generally. One draw back - or not - is that it will give you lose stools.

THE WATER CURE

8oz water every 15 minutes for one hour
8oz water every 30 minutes for one hour
8oz water every 45 minutes for one hour
8oz water every hour until you can't hold any more water

It works.
Been doing it for nearly 30 years.
Theory behind it is that it increases blood volume.
Increase in blood volume causes homostasis to kick in --- increasing red blood cells, white blood cells, and killer-T cells.

Doesn't really matter to me WHY.....it really does work!

I looked this over again, and now I'm wondering... How do you use the Oil of Oregano, HiCalGal? DH and bought some last year and used some in our garden to fight pests (it worked okay), but we've never used it to fight colds.

Thanks for all the wonderful information. I agree with everything you posted and some! The only thing I want to comment on is the vitamin A thing. I have read some stuff lately that says we need to balance A and D. Here's a quote from by Sally Fallon, president of Weston A. Price Foundation 7-22-2008

"It is important to AVOID cod liver oil that contains low levels of vitamin D in relationship to vitamin A; the ratio of A to D in cod liver oil should be at least 10 to 1 - unfortunately, in some commercial brands of cod liver oil the ratio is as low as 100 to 1."

Also, H1N1 proliferates in the throat. Gargling with a salt water solution twice a day can REALLY help.

Good post. I would like to add cherries -- they are greatly under publicized for their preventaive abilities and ginger tea which helps the immune system by strengthening the digestive process. And there is much to be said about an apple a day. It really does build the immune system.

warning: long post.

for every vitamin, mineral or herbal supplement i take, i have a reason for it. when it comes to colds, i used to up my Vit-C powder w/bioflavinoids, take raw garlic and supplemental garlic, suck on zinc gluconate lozenges, take echinacea, drink tons of green tea, up my Vit-A, but never have i had the kind of results with the following 2 products.

i still take vit c powder w/bioflavinoids for my immune system and tea because i enjoy it, but the following are my main tried and true "staples" for preventing and stopping a cold/flu in it's tracks...based on my experience. my home is never without it.


- grapefruit seed extract (GSE w/citricidal)..i take this if i feel a sign of a cold (itchy throat) to stop it in it's tracks. best thing i ever discovered.

- oil of oregano (origanum vulgare)...i take this for prevention, especially if i just came from a doc's appt, in the mall, or been exposed to someone who's sick.

little tidbits of info for treating and preventing colds/flu the natural way.

-Vit.C w/bioflavinoids (of which quercetin has been shown to be effective against many viruses including viruses that cause the flu and is also the most effective nutritional antihistamine).

- zinc posesses direct anti viral activity against several viruses than can cause the common cold. in a double blind clinical trial, zinc gluconate lozenges significantly reduced the average duration of common colds by 7 days.

-tea w/elder flowers helps clear congestion in the respiratory tract. also effective for sinus, throat an inner-ear infections.

[elder flowers contain rutin, a bioflavinoid also found in buckwheat that helps the body assimilate Vit-C]

- Vit-A works against colds by strengthening and restoring the mucouse membranes of the throat, nose and sinus cavities. Vit-A prevents colds and infections by making sure the membranes within are strong enough to push germs and mucous out and alleviates the symptoms by keeping membranes moist.

- garlic is a natural antibiotic and a powerful and effective detoxifier and immune system booster.

(i've seen the garlic thread but haven't had time to read the posts there. hope you don't mind that i posted some things about garlic here and i hope i'm not repeating what's already there)

Allicin is the most powerful medicinal compound derived from garlic and provides the greatest reputed health benefits.

Allicin does not occur in "ordinary" garlic, it is produced when garlic is finely chopped or crushed. The finer the chopping and the more intensive the crushing, the more allicin is generated and the stronger the medicinal effect.


As well as having antibiotic properties, allicin is an excellent anti-fungal and garlic preparations have been used in folk medicine to treat skin infections such as athlete's foot. Be cautious: too much contact with crushed garlic can result in skin blistering. You should also be aware that a few people are allergic to garlic. Garlic is powerful and needs to be treated with respect.

Allicin starts to degrade immediately after it is produced, so its medical effectiveness decreases over time. Cooking speeds up this degradation and microwaving appears to destroy allicin totally and eliminate any health benefits.

So for the most powerful medicinal effect, crush a little raw garlic and combine with the cooked food shortly before serving. Don't overdo it - too much can produce irritation of and possibly even damage to the digestive tract. Remember too that raw, crushed garlic also has the most powerful flavour!



If you or a loved one are preparing for surgery you need to know that garlic is a blood thinner, so it should not be used by anyone two weeks before surgery to reduce the risk of postoperative bleeding. In addition, check with your physician if you use garlic supplements because it can affect medications, like blood thinners warfarin or coumadin.

my two cents:

i've also been told to get off Vit-E for the same reasons..blood thinner. often wondered why the medical community doesn't suggest vit-E and garlic which are natural blood thinners instead of dishing out dangerous prescriptions for coumadin and warfarin which can cause fatal side effects.
