I felt SGU got better in the second season but it still didn't feel like Stargate - that only happened when Jack, Daniel, Sam or Rodney appeared! It was too dark in many ways and the humour was sorely lacking. Having said that, I was sad it ended, especially as they are all still stuck out there. SG1 needs to go rescue them! in a film!

I guess I wasn't as disappointed because I didn't go in comparing it to the other two shows (which I had only just started watching right before SGU premiered).

It did take me a little to get into it. The first half of the first season was too slow and it was lacking in the humor. I know they were trying to make it more serious but it was way too heavy. By the middle of season two I was hooked and things lightened up.

I found myself caring way more for the supporting cast over the main characters. My favorite two characters are Dale Volker and Varro (who was greatly underused if you ask me). With Lisa Park coming in 3rd. Volker, Park and Brody got a lot more screen time in the end and they were the comedy of the show. Volker and Brody bickering was reminiscent of Jack and Daniel going at it or Rodney and Sheppard.

Was it Stargate? In as much as they used the Stargate which was a whole lot towards the end of season 2 (my favorite episodes were all in the 2nd half of season, two--most of them right at the end).

But, then again, the other two shows moved away from the Stargate, too. Atlantis had them going through the gate but they were in the jumpers and flying all over more than anything. SG-1 got ships and transporters and the focus wasn't just on the gates, it was on space exploration and aliens.

SGU fits into the Stargate franchise I think (more so with the 2nd season). I think it would have gotten better with a 3rd season and people wouldn't be asking these questions any more.

I loved the Rodney/Eli interaction too. I think Rodney noticed right away how sharp Eli was, and I loved the fact that Eli stood up to him and was more than willing to debate. I was looking forward to seeing more of that.

I've been writing a fanfic off and on for years centered on Rodney, and with the end of all the series for now, my story and what can happen is wide open! I never liked Young on SGU, so I'm playing around with writing a way to send Sheppard to take over Destiny after some kind of accident kills Young. John is a really manipulative person (though his ways are mostly positive) and Rush is very manipulative as well (though his ways are mostly negative). I think it would be fun to see how that dynamic works.

I would have loved to see more Rodney/Eli interaction. SOOO cool to see Rodney actually like someone right off who isn't, hmm...blonde or stacked or both? emoticon
I will miss new episodes of any of the shows. I guess that means I even consider SGU Stargate.

Rodney totally made Atlantis great. Was happy they pulled him in for Universe - wish they would have done that sooner and more often.

I had to watch when I heard McKay was going to be on it! I jumped in mid season 2 to have some idea what was going on by the time the episode with him in it aired. Ahh, Rodney. The things I'll do for him.

I took issue with how smug the producers were about it. They thought Stargate fans would watch it because it had the franchise name on it. I take issue with anyone telling me what I will or will not do, so this just rubbed me the wrong way.

I tried watching the first two episodes, but I just couldn't stand it for all the reasons you mentioned LAYDHAWK. I heard good things about the final episodes, but again I just couldn't go back.

I agree definitely lacking in the humor dept. And I did feel like they were trying to be BSG. It was a shame. Was disappointed they wrapped the show like they did.

Not controversial, and you made some good points, but it was definitely Stargate. Still gating to strange planets; still saw some of our old friends. LOVED ELI!!!! The humor wasn't as prevalent, which I think is one of the reasons that SGU didn't last...most of us SG geeks want that humor!

So, I love SG-1 and Atlantis. When SGU started, I watched the first 3 or 4 eps and was apalled. At the time, I was terribly disappointed that it was such a dark, angsty, BSG-style show. I believe that one of the hallmarks of SG-1 and Atlantis is the humor, the lightness of it. They can be very serious and dark, but there's always that look between two characters, or a quip somewhere. Having only seen those few episodes of SGU, I was saddened that they had seemingly abandoned humor, save for Eli's little inserts. (LOVE Eli, btw)

I have now gone through and watched all of SGU, and I like the show, but it still doesn't feel to me like Stargate. I wasn't a fan of BSG, and I really dislike the shooting style of that show. SGU adopted the same hand-held looking, shaky camera, whip pan style. Later episodes attempted to recover some of the humor, but they never really got to that lightness I loved about SG-1 and Atlantis.
What do you think: Is SGU really Stargate?
