Awesome thanks!

I'm sure that I won't know our schedule until we get close to the competition but I'll definitely let you know if I'll be free for that.

The first TOI competitions I saw were last year when I first joined this team and these programs are amazing. It's really a great competition to see.

I hope to get to Troy to see the TOI competition. The first rink where I took lessons was Troy. I taught French at the little town just of south of there (Tipp City). The power classes will be offered at South Metro, just south of Dayton. It's about a 30 min drive from Troy and will be offered on Wed and Fri at 10:15 - 11:15. Let me know if you really are interested when you get in the area and I will get you more info.

Oh that sounds awesome! I wish I did live closer. That would be a great class.

Funny though, I'll be in OH in June for a skating competition. It's the Theater on Ice National Competition in Troy. Maybe I could work heading to Dayton for a class.....

Hi Laurie, Yes, I don't think you see those very often. Our rink offered it, simply because we are getting close to the time the rink closes, so there was some extra ice time available and a couple of our coaches thought it would be a great thing to have. I skate at a municiple rink that is part of a recreational center complex. My coach also managed to talk the manager of where we skate in the summer into offering a power skating class that you can take as a drop in. It will be twice a week in between the morning freestyles (I'm retired, so I get to skate in the morning). As you can tell this was all set up by my coach and another. I live in Dayton, Oh if you are anywhere close.

I have actually been looking around for a "power skating" class. I'm not doing so good for finding one. I emailed one of the skating clubs in my area and they got back to me with a "we don't have a program, but we can set you up with a program with one our coaches". I can't afford that. I'm looking for just a class.
When I first started the program my team is working on now, I was exhausted. But after doing cardio and working and pushing myself hard, I am feeling like i've got more endurance and I'm not panting like a dog when we're done.
When I was skating solo, I would try to just reskate my program when I was done. Twice in a row was killer. I think I had heard that Nancy Kerrigan did that (so I'm really dating myself on when I used to skate regularly) and it would work if I had kept to it.

I have been taking a power stroking/Moves in the field class. The person who has the class, kept us moving most of the hour. We "older" adults, did stop a bit more than the kids but I was beat by the end. In fact, I sat down at my computer after I got home and then had trouble getting back up. LOL

Thanks, You don't know how long I have been looking for a way to add friends. None of the "help" things tell you how to do that.

I think all you have to do is go to their sparkpage and it will say "Add as a friend" in the right hand corner.

Hi Kittiwakes, I started running to build up my legs and endurance. I also do squats to help my sit spin. I didn't realize that this was here. It's strange that I never looked for a figure skating group.
I know this dumb, but I don't know how to add friends unless they have already added me. Feel free to add me though. I would be happy to be your friend.

stroking around the rink once or twice inbetween moves or doing your routine really packs on the stamina too. Sometimes it's good to stroke around after you do your routine. Keeps you moving then you bring your heart rate down alittle then go do it over builds up quickly.

My daughter does dance on the ice to help her stroking and edges. I think anything to improve stamina and flexability would help. Good luck on the skating. i tried it for a year, but kept hurting myself, so i had to quit emoticon

I use to rollerblade in the summers before I went back to skating but one summer I tried to go again and I kept on falling looking for the toe pick myself. It's not easy going from blade to wheels I give you alot of credit Kittiwakes!
I have my rollerblades still maybe you will motivate me to want to give it another try.
It's soooo good for your glutes and legs helps for the stroking i'm sure.
I use the treadmill walking high inclines to help my skating seems to be working.

It's so great to find a skating team! I'm actually on sparkpeople in part to improve my skating. I wish this board was a bit more active.

What's your favorite off-ice workout that you do that you feel helps improve your skating? I'm trying ballet and rollerblading. My first day of rollerblading was kind of scary as I kept "feeling" for a non-existent toepick. I'm actually excited that it should help me break the bad habit of pushing off with my toepick. It should also improve my stroking.

Have you tried yoga? Some people told me that could improve my skating but I'm skeptical. Shouldn't ballet be better than yoga?

Any great workout ideas?

Thanks!,
Kittiwakes

PS I'm new to sparkpeople and could use some friends so feel free to check out my page and add me as a friend and I'll do likewise.
