Oh, that's so sad! Guess my hosiery will go back to the "textile scrap" pile.

Just as an update, they're not using the hair and hose. The booms made with hair are too heavy; there's an extra-light fiber that works better with less chance of injury to the workers who are hauling them in and out of boats.

The organization that was collecting is still accepting the donations because they want people to be able to feel like they're making a contribution, but they don't really know what they're going to do with all the hair.

I'm always looking for new ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle, so I was thrilled when I found out about Matter of Trust through today's "Your Daily Thread" e-mail.

Through Matter of Trust, you can donate your washed used nylons (even with runs) and hair and fur trimmings to make booms to soak up oil in the Gulf.

I usually donate my hosiery to Goodwill for textile scraps, but this seems like a direct way to reduce waste and help the environment.
