I'm still formulating my resolutions. Historically, I have not made a list of things to do, but I think that this may be something that will help me to make some progress while I am so busy with life's details. At the top of my list is to be more kind to myself!

success! i stopped at the health food store on my way home yesterday and they did have quinoa.

i cooked it tonight, following the soaking and rinsing instructions from the page i posted. it's really quite good!

i sliced some firm tofu and fried until browned, added fresh basil, baby spinach and mushrooms and stir fried them a bit. put some feta onto the quinoa to get all melty and mixed the whole thing together when the veggies were done. yummy!

i did try it plain, and i think it'd even be tasty with just some butter and salt & pepper. this will definitely be a staple.

Thanks Nora and Alicia - these look interesting. Nora I had no idea there was special preparation required. Maybe that's why we weren't impressed when we tried it before.

We've bought it in bulk from Whole Foods and I think we still have some. I tend to eat a variety of beans and rice for lunch ... seems like mixing it up with Quinoa would be a nice change.

Thanks

I don't do resolutions either. However my goal is to get back into my goal weight range and stay there this year. I would also like to improve my core strength---since I currently don't have any!

apparently (i say apparently because i haven't tried it yet), the trick to making good quinoa is to properly prepare it before the actual cooking...the rinsing/soaking.

a trip to trader joe's might be in my future today. i really want to try it!

I don't really do resolutions either, I'm kind of a work in progress emoticon

But like many of you I have intentions for this year!
- get off the antidepressants once and for all - I have a plan!
- eat more humanely - I'm opposed to corporate farming and plan to eat locally grown foods
- make working out in the morning a habit again

Now about Quinoa ... how do you cook it to make it good? We tried it, but it was really bland ... although the texture is kind of fun!

thanks, alicia. it really comes down to me being lazy. my grocery carries bob's red mill items, and i keep searching, thinking i'm just missing it.

i do have a trader joe's within a short detour on my commute home, as well as a decent health food store close to work.

i just have to get to one of them. but i'll be sure to look for it when i finally do!

Hey, Nora! I love Quinoa! Trader Joe's carries it, if there's a store near you. Also, I just got a big bag (4 lbs., I think) of Bob's Red Mill Quinoa at Costco. Some natural food stores also carry it in bulk.

i don't tend to do new year's resolutions. i figure i need to improve myself every day, not just one day of the year (especially since resolutions usually fall by the wayside by week 2). however, i do like having goals. what i have been working on for the last several months:

-floss daily (i'm right there with ya, twist)
-body-for-life 12-week challenge (i'm about half way through my first go-round with this, and actually doing reasonably well. it pushes for weight training as well as cardio, which i like. i plan to follow this up with a "rest" week or two, then start up the 12-week challenge again)
-working on incorporating more vegetarian/vegan foods/meals (i love tofu, i love tofu...now if i could just find me some quinoa somewhere).
-log food. was doing well until the holidays hit and i just didn't have the computer access i needed.

a similar goal to twist as well is this...i'm considering doing a gym tri-athalon (my gym has a pool, bikes and treadmills). i got a swim suit for christmas, so i've added swimming to my routine already, but i'm not up to running quite yet. but i would like to start the c25k program later on this year (assuming i can shed some weight. i really don't think my knees would be very happy with me if i tried it now).

My last New Year's Resolution was to give up making New Year's Resolutions. LOL !!!

However, my "goal" for this year (or sooner) is to be able to do 100 good military style push ups in two minutes. That's an officers as well as Navy Seal challenge. So far, I can do 42 in 60 seconds. It's going to take a while, but that's what I'm going for. We'll see how far I get. I've been practicing for a couple of weeks. Although, I had to take this week off because I was fighting a slight cold. ugh...

Haven't decided what else I'm going to try. I'll pick up more challenges during the rest of the year. I can't get over that it's 2010 ! YIKES !!

Happy New Year !

PS - Coach Nancy posted this great New Year's Resolution quote.

"New Year's Resolutions... In one year and out the next." I thought that was hilarious !!!

My intentions are set!

- complete my first marathon in March (and not finish last!)
- continue with my running/training even post-race (so cross-training, strength training and running) by entering another endurance event for fall (either triathlon or half or marathon again)
- walk the dogs D A I L Y
- floss daily (what, dental hygiene is important!)
- log food daily

No excuses, just full steam ahead. I know what to do, and I know how to do it. I have no reason to not get to where I want to be.

1) complete the SP bootcamp in Jan to get back in gear with consistent strength training
2) train for a Century bike ride in June.
3) Ride as far as I can in June.
4) Get back to consistent logging and staying in range at least 4/7 days per week.

I have no weigh loss goals, but if I do all of this I can expect the scale and my clothes to show it come 2011.
Happy New Year everyone.

Don't think of it as this time, think of it as lifetime.

I Intend:
to gear up my weight/cardio workouts

early to bed early to rise
be a goal oriented

Just wondering, is anyone making New Year's resolutions this year? If so, what are they?

I'm participating in PCRM's 21-day Vegan Kickstart again, starting tomorrow. Here's a link, if anyone is interested:

We had a really amazing yoga class this morning on "setting intentions". I am so excited about 2010!
